    Poke Don, Cucumber Salad

So glad I finally got to try this place. I was super impressed with everything. Everything was so fresh and well seasoned. I got a beef bowl dish and it was fantastic. The cucumber salad was fresh as well. They don't have an hard liquor but they have sake, beer and wine. They have a few tables outside and it's cozy inside. Service was super friendly. Overall I will be back to try more dishes, cause they all looked great!

An exceptional little gem on the Portland food scene! We were drawn in by the menu - Japanese street food, fun items like Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki, things that are hard to find in this neck of the woods. The space is small and modern, but they seem to make great use of the square footage. Business was quiet when we arrived on a Wednesday afternoon. I tried the hot tea - it was the one that wasn't jasmine (can't remember the name) and it was delightful. We also tried the Katsu Sando (fried chicken sandwich) and Gyudon (shaved ribeye rice bowl.) Both were large and absolutely delicious. The Katsu Sando is a beast (see photos) but the dredge is on point and seasoning so tasty and just so satisfying to dig in to. The rice bowl was equally satisfying - super thinly shaved ribeye, marinated and grilled to perfection, beautifully runny egg, pickled veg with tons of flavor, wonderfully toothsome rice. I don't think I could find a negative if I tried. As with most Portland hot spots, the service is nice but not warm. It's just something we have been getting used to. But the food alone is worth a return visit. The items that we ordered were $16 ea and I thought that was a great value for what we received. Can't wait to return to Mami for more delicious authentic Japanese noms!

Great food and service. Highly recommended visiting next time you are in downtown Portland.

Got a salmon don (rice bowl? poke bowl) for takeout and thought it was delicious--the ingredients were high quality and delish. However, compared to something you could get at Crunchy Poke, it was more expensive and smaller portions. I've heard the burger is great too. Can't wait to try in person!

i can not stress enough how disappointed in myself i am. for not stopping in this cutie place sooner. i didn't know i was missing out on something big until i stepped into this teeny den of japanese inspired deliciousness. the service was what you would expect from a new englander slogging away in a tourist town, tepid but warmed up after the order went in. and the details of the space is just something you have to come in and experience yourself. very cute with a tiny nudge towards edgy. if you're up for some authentic asian eats, have at it!!

The food is authentic, the servers are knowledgeable and prompt, and the place is quaint and charming. A delightful spot with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.

I really wanted to keep liking Mami -- and don't get me wrong the atmosphere and servers are great, but I was re-thinking my experiences and just felt it wasn't up to my expectations. This last time we ordered the turkey ramen and I ordered the mami burger. We accidentally ordered a few of the same things, including the chicken karaage. I think that Mami is primarily focused on fusion foods amongst some Japanese street foods. I don't think their okonomiyaki is better than what I can make at home, and for the most part, everything is just okay. The ramen this time was pretty sub par. I was excited for the burger and wanted to like it but it was lacking any substantial flavor. I felt like I was eating ground beef and soft bread. It just felt like it was missing the mark. I think the one thing Mami does really, really well is the Chicken Karaage -- perfectly juicy and tender and slightly crispy on the outside. Everything else however, misses the target on taste and I always worry when there is too much sauce -- it feels like a compensation tactic to mask the flavors.

Ding dang ding....wowza, this place was amazing!!!! My friends and I shared a bunch of different plates and everything was delicious!! My favorites were the Okonomiyaki and the nikuman. Literally could eat that every day. But everything was amazing. Service was decent too. And I enjoyed the sake. Atmosphere was nice as well.

It is evident that the chef does not have training in Asian cuisine. The yaki soba was almost inedible. They are so heavy-handed with ingredients that it was a chore to eat each bite. I've never had it so bad, and, there was absolutely no spice but there was an excess of salt....lots of salt! The steamed pork buns were soggy and tasted like bland pork. These were very disappointing. We tried the croquettes and they were passable. The service was excellent and the ambiance is quite nice. There is limited outdoor seating

We were looking for a quick bite for lunch while in Portland. Weren't too hungry, plus have a 3 month old child with us, so casual convenience was key. Mami totally delivered! Small bites, great prices (many under $10, nothing over $20), and delicious food. I'd recommend trying everything, but the takoyaki stole the show (note there were 6, we just ate 2 before I could get a photo). Waitstaff was super friendly and helpful, great spot, highly recommend!

There was some outdoor seating area, which was a great alternative especially for a sunny summer day. My friend got the yaki soba (which is vegan) and I got the katsu sando. The katsu saando was stacked with ingredients, had a great crunch, and the bread was structured enough to hold the heftiness of the katsu inside but soft enough to make for some nice pillowy bites. I'd recommend getting that one, if you are looking for a satisfying sandwich.

Food was pretty tasty but portions are small for what you pay, considering the bowls are mostly white rice.

Sushi obviously isn't inexpensive, but compared to many places in Portland it's quite reasonably priced if you order non-speciality rolls. The eel avocado roll is especially good and I have also enjoyed the fatty tuna and yellowtail/scallion. I think what makes this place special though is that it appears the owner is heavily involved in the day-to-day operations. I believe he works as a sushi chef sometimes and I've also passed by late at night and seen him cleaning the glass on the front door. The waiters seem genuinely happy to be working there and seem to be friends with each other. They also seem to have strong intra-restaurant culture such as greeting people who walk in the door with the same greetings that I heard when I was in Japan and saying "corner" every time they're rounding a corner with food. The patio outside is delightful. There's a waterfall and the space has the feel of a Japanese tea garden. Really special place. It can feel a bit buzzy/sceney on the weekends, for better or worse. Definitely a special restaurant worth going to.

Every sushi roll was fresh and packed with different fish. We loved the option to sit at the traditional Japanese tables on the floor, it reminded me of when in Japan. It took a bit of time for the sushi to come in, but we did order quite a bit (so worth it) They had a painting on the wall featuring the sushi chefs from 2020 and they told us that the same sushi chefs are still working here! It was very heart warming.

Maybe the lights were a little harshly bright, but otherwise a fine place to dine. We didn't get too many things, as we stopped in more for a finisher for the evening than full meal (we'd come from a party with small foods). We ordered a shoyu ramen and a dragon roll. Interesting note on the dragon roll, it has a sweet potato interior. This led to a distinct flavor from other rolls I've had in the past, and a smooshier texture, but a good roll nonetheless. The ramen was mostly a delight. Sumptuous broth, the egg was not too hard nor soft, and almost all the ingredients were perfect. Which I usually avoid that word because it's too subjective, but it seems to fit here. Major exception is the chashu pork. It was overcooked to the extreme. No other word for it, these dried out circles of meat were thick and chewy, and soaking them in the broth couldn't save them. Sad. Otherwise, some of the best ramen I've had since leaving Japan. The only other note I'd have is I just wanted some tea, and had to order a weird tea concoction to get it. Sometimes you'd just like an oolong tea, nothing fancy. I recommend this restaurant, overall, and hope you enjoy it too.

Mr. Tuna is one of three Open Table Exclusive restaurants in Maine, so most every local Chase Reserve card member uses their twice yearly $150 credit here, which explains my visit. The people watching from the outdoor tables on Middle Street must be some of the best in the city. You could easily sip a glass of sake (the dreamy clouds was...dreamy) while eating a toro maki roll and marveling at the tourists waiting in a two hour Eventide line. But we ordered the lemongrass fried tofu salad, salmon toro sashimi and 3 maki rolls, including the green crab special. Everything tasted fresh and excellent with only Yosaku in the same league for Old Port sushi. Of course Yosaku is much more authentic Japanese than Mr. Tuna, though Mr. Tuna is more fun. Like most trendy Portland restaurants, lunch for two with a couple drinks each is $200 all in (get that Chase card!).
