Saraveza is hands down one of my favorite places to eat in Portland. Not only is their food incredible and their prices fair, but they're just plain awesome people! I had placed a to-go order that was all vegetarian dishes (though we're not veg, it just happened that way!), and chose soup as a side, and they were nice enough to call to make sure it was ok that the soup had meat in it because the order seemed vegetarian. Amazing atmosphere and food - I lived in Milwaukee for years, and the fried cheese curds here rival anything in Milwaukee. They remind me of Lakefront Brewery and every bit as good (if not better). 10/10 would recommend, will be coming back for the cheese curds! read more

Tried out Saraveza for the first time today and I was pleasantly surprised. I had their Buttermilk Fried Chicken Plate w/ mashed potatoes, tarragon gravy, braised chard. The batter was light, crispy and really delicious. The chicken was boneless and super moist it just melted in my mouth. They have an excellent beer selection, mostly from local breweries. What topped the experience off was our waitress Sam. She was super friendly and patient with me as I tend to take my time when ordering beer in a new place. I saw her engaging with all of her customers and she made us feel at home. Give this woman a raise, you are lucky to have her. We sat outside but the inside is clean and well maintained, you'' like it I promise. I'll defiantly be back. read more

True cheers bar in Portland ! I only have good things to say about Saraveza. It's just what every neighborhood anywhere needs! My personal take on a bar is that, it shouldnt really make one feel conscious and intimidated, but make the whole mood to be easy, and able to relax as you would in your living room. Saraveza gets it absolutely right! I have so many good things to say about this place, I visited Saraveza when I was new to Portland and just moved into the area. The place has a vibe that just makes things so much easier on you. They have few TVs to watch games, regular live music to keep you entertained and the bartenders are just so damn friendly! The beer selection at Saraveza is one of the best that I have seen in recent times. The IPAs, sours, stouts, barrel aged ones, german beers everything that they bring over here is gold. Looks like they actually spend time in handpicking the beers to pour. I have heard very good things about the food, but i haven't really tried them as I was good with liquid bread :D. A funky, cool bar for the beer lover a little north of downtown. It's a long shoebox space with booths and highboys scattered through. But the first thing you notice is the rows of coolers, housing bottles you can order and crack for on-site consumption. Some of the bottle selections are damn good stuff, and there's also a fair bit of coverage for what's going on around the Oregon scene in general--so there are a lot of decent everyday beers alongside the fancier stuff. Prices are good and staff is very nice, but these guys are mostly known for the cool vibe the places carries. They have slick-looking bottle cap art under resin on most of the tabletops, and tons of cool taxidermy and signage on the walls. It feels like it could have been here for 50 years or more. They serve great deviled eggs, which are always a wise choice at midnight after an evening of beer. There's a back room where they host special events (beer dinners and the like), and it always feels like people are having plenty of fun here. I'll definitely be back more often when in town. read more

This place really can't get much better. It is a hole in the wall Packer bar in Portland. They are sitting on a gold mine of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula memorabilia. This place is cooler than a lot of Wisconsin Packer bars. Somehow they've snuck in hard-to-get beers in Wisconsin to Portland! New Glarus was offered as well as some wonderful local Oregon/Washinton beers. I was highly impressed by the decorations, atmosphere, crowd, beer, and ambience. This place is really amazing. The food was delicious. True, authentic pasties that taste like you're in the UP. The biscuits and gravy was also quite good. I ordered the baked mac and cheese and it was spectacular. We came here to watch the Packers vs. the Bears game and couldn't have had more fun. The bar had local Wisconsin songs like, "the Bears Still suck" and everyone in the bar knew the lyrics. We had such a fun time with other Packer fans. Almost everyone in here had Wisconsin/UP ties. Everyone was very friendly and the service was good. Boyfriend: "This bottle shop and bar has pasties!" Me, stupidly: "Pasties? You're making me get drunk and wear pasties? You ass." Little did I know.. Saraveza hands down has the best bottled beer selection in Portland. This bar and bottle shop does not appear to be a hidden beer gem because the decor comes off with this lumberjack and fisherman theme. But damn past the large deer head mounted on the wall, there are some pretty damn good hard to find microbrews on tap and rare bottled beers nestled in the 1950s mint green refrigerators. We sat at the bar and were pleasantly served by Mickey, the damn coolest bartender ever. On tap, we drank the North Coast Saison, Rumble Oak Aged IPA, MateVeza Black Lager, and Oakshire Collaorative Evil. All were hands down delicious and different. We nibbled on the creme cheese and bacon stuffed jalepenos, holy mother of God freaking good. Jalepenos and Bacon, you two are meant to be paired. Then we ordered a pasty (no not one to wear, stupid me) with shredded beef and potatoes. So delicious, a must try. They also had other menu items that looked and smelled delicious: curried lamb, the nater, sausages, pickles, cheese plates, etc. My boyfriend was able to purchase a couples bottles of Cascade Cuvée du Jongleur, which he was elated about. Apparently it is nowhere to be found, but what do I know. Totally recommend this place for some delicious whole hearty food and to try their delicious hard to find taps. Great NE pub with a UK/Wisconsin feel to it. Lots of old Midwest brewery "art" up on the walls with a slight lodge-y feel as well. I wasn't hungry when I came here, but I wish I would've been. All sorts of hearty stuff like stews and MULTIPLE different kinds of pastie (which you don't really see much in the states, but the English side of my family used to make all the time...both sides of my family hail from Wisconsin too, FYI). Pastie is kind of a potato/meat pie concoction, by the way. Beer selection was...excellent. About 12 taps but they make 'em count. The beers they had on tap were almost exclusively winter seasonals, which was great. I got to try a lot of stuff I missed at the Holiday Ale Festival such as Upright Brewing's "Holy Herb", a beer brewed with Eucalyptus. A big negative though is....the closing time. Midnight? Really? Past due for an update. Saraveza continues to be one of Portland's best beer bars. Change in ownership hasn't caused any significant changes for customers. I have visited a lot of times over the past almost 10 years. Consistently good service from knowledgeable bartenders, good and varied taplist, nice wide selection of bottles, solid food to soak up the beer. We were exploring Portland and found this place that served Pasties. Growing up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and being Finnish we often ate pasties both from my Mom's magical cooking abilities and from the several Pasty shops in our beautiful U.P. Town. We were all excited to try a Portland pasty. This very cool establishment was fun with great service and a lot of Green Bay Packer memorabilia. Go Pack Go! This is my kind of bar! Located in a quiet neighborhood with street parking. Inside, couple of commercial retro refrigerators filled with bottles of love, I mean stocked with a vast variety of crafted beers! The ambiance has that edgy hipster feel. Retro coffee shop/bar set up. Upon entering the front of the bar, there are a few wood table tops that seats about 2-4 comfortably. And past the bar, in the back are a few wooden booths that could seat about 4. The table tops are inlayed with repurposed beer bottle caps. A very cozy place. I don't recommend this place for large groups. We attended with 6 in our party, and we were uncomfortably squished in a booth. An inter-changable chalk board menu list the menu on draft at the back of the bar. There are so many selections to choose from! I wanted to try them all! I ended up ordering the (Nor Valley) "VIP" Vanilla Infused Porter. Dark in color, nice body and the flavor was amazing! The vanilla tasted like a carmel. Easy to drink. Mmmm....! A beer we shared was the Vintage 2009 Deschutes "The Abyss" ($32/ 22oz). Dark in color. Heavy in fluidity. Flavors of cherry and oak greeted your taste buds. Delicious! The service was fast and friendly. And knowledgable in beer! We didn't order any food. But we got a container of Chex mix. They have souvenirs to purchase of hoodies, earrings, t-shirts and other things. If I lived in Portland, this would be my stomping ground. Whoa, I haven't yelped in how long?! Ok, well I'll jump back in the game with a Saraveza review. We're going to "Cerveza?", my man asks? No, "Sarah VAYZ UH, not cerveza", I corrected. But beer it is, and lots of beer bottles of all imaginative labels and from farflung (and local, of course) places. I friggin love the massively gargantuan antique green fridge monsters, with all the condensation on the glass doors so you have to wipe them with your sleeve or open them up to see all the goodies inside. Hint - you have to SLAM the big door to make the latch close. M-m-m, what have we here? Shall we have a Fat Boy IPA? No wait, I like Belgians...here is a De Ranke XX Bitter Belgian Golden...but stop and check the menu price first, cause this bottle would have set me back $18! Fantastic gastropub. Good food, great beers, casual atmosphere and great friendly service despite how busy it was on a weds night (still managed to sit at a booth though!). The only downer was the quantity to $$ ratio, but it wasn't so bad as to bring the rating down to 4 stars for me. They bill their food as "midwestern style" (didn't know they had a style) - lots of pickled vegetables (celeries, onions and beets were particularly tasty), sausages, etc but there were definitely options for vegetarians (potato pasties, mac and cheese, etc). I wouldn't come here with a big group of people or to come to gorge on massive amounts of food. I'd probably keep this place in mind if I'm just with one, two or at the absolute most 3 other people to grab some food and eat some tasty pasties. read more

It's pretty easy to rest on your laurels. Seems to me that's what's happening here. I've misplaced my laurels. If I relocate them, I'll plop down on them and rest a long, long time. Then I'll try this joint on a night other than Saturday. As a once-every-two-years patron at Saraveza my perspective is skewed a bit I suppose. The place is kind of dumpy and scroungy and I don't mind that. I grew up in this part of town and the scroungy/dumpy is long standing. But there's also a bit of the, "There's a sucker born every minute" here. 'We are cool, so you'll need to be prepared for how cool we are by paying a little premium for your beer and suffering a little smugness .' Lots of $6 and $7 pints. Hmmm. Maybe it's as simple as avoiding Saturday nights and reevaluating the situation. Or maybe they oughta lose those restful laurels. read more

Little things. It's the little things that make a place special. One of these things would be removing the tap handles of beers you don't have. When I order beer A because you're advertising it's availability, I don't wanna hear "How about beer B?" Especially when this happens twice, each incident separated by months. Is unscrewing a piece of wood that hard? Then you leave me with the beer tome while you screw around with your regulars. Oh, the list hasn't been updated for the season, so I should look at the coolers. This is way too hard. I just want a beer that won't cost me $10 and doesn't choke me with hop piss. I had good feelings about this place, now it feels clubby and exclusive. In a secret handshake way, not a velvet rope way, although it IS nightclub loud inside. Oh, the food. I will admit that maybe I'm spoiled by Whiffies but the pastie I had was made of bone dry crust. The top was cut open and the space created filled with burnt bits of I dunno what. Aren't pasties supposed to be eaten from the hand? Aren't you defeating the purpose of the things? It came with some bits of carrot, pomegranate seeds (WTF?) and some apple slices that were soaked in fucking vinegar. What the hell is that about? Anyway I finished it so I wasn't gonna pitch a fit but when my plate was collected I heard "Glad you enjoyed that." At least they're presumptuous! And options are limited, you've got the pasties, some salads and a few overpriced munchies (bowl of chex mix $3, IIRC? Seriously? I can get a handful of peanuts for a quarter in a lot of bars.) I had some good vibes when this place opened and when I closed out I was bade farewell with a warm handshake. But I don't think I'll be back. read more

Having been back recently, I really do need to up this place to 4-stars. They have done a great job of hiring (Jonathan is da MAN!) and a really quality job of stocking out those bottle shelves. I am starting to find more and more bottles that tickle my fancy (and are less available elsewhere). The taps are hit/miss, with always a couple of quality niche beers on. I tried another pasty to make sure that the one I had on the first night wasn't an anomaly. It was good, but again, dry. Are pasties supposed to be dry? I have no idea. I know as much about the midwest as I do about outer Mongoloa. It's just as foreign and distant to me. So I am no expert. Fortunately this time I was provided with 3 hot sauces - a house made chili sauce, a chipotle sauce, and some mango habañero sauce - which when applied voluminously, made all the difference in the world. I almost feel like it needs some gravy or something to overcome the arid crust. And of course, everything in life is better with gravy. I still agree that I won't be driving all the way across town just to hang out here, but any time I am in the area, well, it will be my pub of choice. read more

Incredible pub and bottle shop with a lovely selection of uncommon drafts and several cold cases of exceptional beer. My favorite case the one proffering unique & rare beer, including some ancient sours. Couple this with great food, friendly & proficient service (Tyler, you ROCK) alongside a delightfully eclectic ambience (and the occasional FREE BACON NIGHT) and you've got yourself a good time, my friend! Even though I strongly suggest you visit Saraveza for their brilliant beer selection, the menu is nice (albeit on the smaller side) and it won't damage your wallet too much to grab a little something to have with your brew. The ruben pasties are fabulous and I often indulge in one, but the beet-pickled Deviled eggs always have my heart ($5). I can't resist ordering them every time, often alongside whatever comprises the evening special. They've got great house made sausages, brats, and a sensational Smoked Trout Board for just $10. Their Charcuterie Board ($11) boasts a selection of their own house cured & smoked meats along with salami from Olympic Provisions, a personal favorite of mine. And if you're in the mood for something sweet, they always have an incredibly unusual and delicious offering from Sugar Pimps Cupcake available for just $2.75 (I enjoyed a lemon poppyseed with lavender frosting last time; it was outstanding.) We always seem to be fortunate enough to get a seat at the bar but do be aware that this establishment is on the smaller side and might be a touch crowded on the pub's more popular evenings (ie: if a Packers Game is on). But even if it's busy, my advice is to grab a beer to enjoy - and you will enjoy it - and patiently wait just a little bit, and you'll probably get a seat within a very reasonable amount of time. read more

Cool pub/bottle shop. The place was recommended by a co-worker. I dropped in to get a unique brewski on the way home from work. Too bad GF had dinner waiting for me because the food cooking at Saraveza smelled fantastic. I really, really, really wanted to stick around and sample some of whatever they had on the stove. The two large cold cases are filled with tasty local brews, Belgians and other respectable craft beers. I selected a bomber of something with a ridiculously high ABV and headed back out the door. Everyone in the place seemed friendly, in spite of the nasty weather outside. I will definitely go back and hang out for a while. read more

I don't know my pasties either - yesterday may have been my first one. It didn't knock my socks off, but it was indeed tasty. My guess is that it should have been a bit moister, but what do I know? Loved the garnish of pickled vegetables and fruit (who'd a thunk pickled pears and cherries would work so well?). The soup of the day gazpacho was very good. Service was friendly. Food seemed to take longer than I would have thought with a nearly empty pub, but we were in no hurry. The atmosphere would be hard to beat - especially loved the music they were playing. The selection of bottled beers is somewhat mind boggling. I (boringly?) chose a local micro brew on tap. Saraveza is about a 5 minute drive from my house, but I try to avoid driving as much as possible. The lack of pedestrian accommodation on the Fremont Bridge would make it a long hike. There is the Yellow Line and buses. Anyway, I agree with Don that this will be my pub of choice when I find myself in the neighborhood. read more

We headed to Saraveza to while away the Memorial Day afternoon, and we had a fine time! As a midwestern native, I was eager to try the food, and it did not disappoint. We shared the pickle plate, which had pickled beets, pickled carrots, and well, sliced pickles, as well as pickled onion (which I'm not a fan of, so hubby ate those.) We also shared the pickled deviled eggs, which arrived pink from beet juice in the brine, and rather hard-boiled/pickled in the whites, which was a little odd, but not enough to ruin the flavor. I had the half-pasty and cup of soup, which was a beef brisket pasty and Hungarian mushroom soup. Both were outstanding. My mom makes awesome pie/pastry crust, but this pasty's crust exceeded hers by a long shot. The soup was velvety and delicious, but topped with a red (paprika?) oil that was at bit alarming at first. This oil would not mix into the soup, either, but it was so delicious that I didn't mind. The extra bit of pickled veggies that came with it were nice to finish up the plate, to cut through the fattiness. He had the large sausage plate, which in this case was a 'chorizo', which was tasty but seemed a bit too dry/lean to earn the name chorizo. The mustards that came with it had some good zing, though. I had a Ft George Vortex IPA, husband had a SOB(Southern Oregon Brewing) CDA. We both loved our beers. I also grabbed a 12oz of Terminal Gravity IPA from the cooler and drank it there. We also met some friendly locals while ordering at the bar. While there I also took a handful of photos to upload to FB to share with some Wisconsinite friends back in the Bay Area, because we are SO taking them to Saraveza when they visit. I love this place. I've been here twice, both on Sunday afternoons. The heart of Saraveza, for me, is found in the staff -namely Jonathan, the front man (with movie star good looks), and Justin, in the kitchen (who quite possibly is the nicest guy in the world), both from Green Dragon fame. The place is small and cozy. As you walk in, there are large, old-school refrigerators lining the walls, housing hundreds of bottles of reputable and superb beer (Pliny, Ninkasi, Blind Pig, etc.). There are several different seating options: booths, high tables, low tables and a great bar for those who, like me, prefer to "assume the position" belly up. The atmosphere is comfortable. Some have called it a "friend's basement" feel, but I think it's more of a Wisconsin bar feel. There are lots of collector's quality Blatz memorabilia and an amazing bar table constructed with different beer bottle caps arranged in geometric patterns. It's quite a work of art. The food is also excellent. What I mean by excellent is that the menu items are well thought out and compliment the wide range of beer options. One example is the pickled deviled eggs. These were presented simply - about four arranged on a small plate - but they packed a punch. They had been pickled, I believe, in beet juice and had this amazing raspberry color. It was the perfect accompaniment to the Blind Pig IPA and/or Ninkasi Total Domination. The "Steve's Cheese Plate" is a must as well. Several types of delicious cheese are served with pickled fruits, vegetables and meats. The menu also offers daily pasties and other "novelties" that are good with beer. In short, the menu is not "fancy" but executed very well. The flavors are interesting and appetizing. In fact, I have not had as much fun discovering unusual flavor and texture pairings in food since eating at Beast. I have heard that this place gets mobbed in the evenings. This is not hard to imagine. I base my rating on my Sunday visits alone. I will certainly return again and again and enjoy myself - especially to the funky grooves of Hall & Oats playing in the background! read more
