At Tai Kai you leave with so much more. Not only do you get top level training from the original BJJ school in CNY who has the most black belts around, but you also gain a new family, community, a home away from home where everybody knows your name (like Cheers, but without the alcohol). I couldn't be more sincere when I say you earn a new family. And this was evident when my 5 year old son (who also trained at Tai Kai) was diagnosed with brain cancer. Ken, the owner and my friend the past 10 years, put together a fund raiser at the gym to help raise money for my son and the upcoming medical costs. The turnout was huge and was more than I would've ever expected. Ken and everyone else at the gym checks on My son all the time, asking how he's doing and I wish I can bring him into the gym so he could get to see everyone who cares about him. Others had dropped of food for us, donated toys, clothes...etc to help relieve our burden. The 10 years I've spent training Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing, and mma at Tai Kai; the blood and sweat, the physical rigors and soreness from a great workout....it's all been worth it to be able to be part of a family and community that had my back in the most difficult time of me and my family's life. Thank you Ken and Tai Kai for being the best around.

I've learned to recognize great instruction and great instructors. Most recently I've had the pleasure of spending the summer training at Warcloud BJJ in Manlius. The owner, Professor Scott Schultz, is one of the most experienced BJJ black belts I've come across. He's learned from, and competed against, top names in BJJ and MMA. This includes several big names in UFC history. His instruction is top notch. He's an encyclopaedia of techniques. He points out all of the subtle details of each move and the way he 'flows' when demonstrating is so smooth. The academy itself is conveniently located, clean, and well equipped. The people that train there are all 'down to earth', good-natured, family-oriented, 'everyday' people. Several of the adult students also have their kids train in the kids classes. The academy has the perfect atmosphere to cater to both the everyday person looking to casually train or the competitor eager to up their game. On a personal note, I've found Professor Schultz to be an accommodating, understanding, humorous, caring, and all around good guy. He cares about each of his students, even the ones who walked through the door for the first time. If you're looking for a place to train in Fayetteville, Manlius or the neighboring towns, this is it.

There is an excellent learning environment and everyone who is more experienced than I am regularly takes the time to help me when I need it. I came in, dropped my ego at the door and was ready to learn Mauy Thai. Now I have never officially trained or done a martial art. I've kicked my punching bag at home for about 1.5 years, and got obsessed with working form and trying to learn new kicks. I was expecting my friend and I, who came along with me, to be learning basics. Such as proper form with low kicks, on a bag or something. Instead on day 1, we did a few drills with pairs and then free sparred for nearly the remainder. I asked the rules of the gym and they said no elbows, and can only knee in clinch to the chest. Okay I thought, and I had a few good partners. We were flowing, and they were supportive. Not striking with any steam whatsoever. Letting us both learn and be technical. Then had a dude who was making it a point he could punch me in the face. Multiple times. No head gear or mouthguards were handed out. This guy clearly could tell I wasn't ready to take face shots. He delivered them anyways. Himself having Mouthguard in, headgear on. I could feel the ego war about to happen, I removed myself from the mat and only worked with a few others I felt I could trust. As I had removed myself for a moment I was watching how my buddy was doing. He was sparring someone who easily had a better decade of training under him. I could see my friend trying to learn and take things slow at first. He threw a very slow, no-steam spinning side kick to his opponent, 10% power and 10% speed. I thought to myself "oh they are gonna tell him no spins." Instead the guy side steps a newbie. And launches one himself doing a jump spinning back kick, hitting my friend under his guard. At quadruple the power my friend threw it at. My friend winces and keeps his guard up, throwing back jabs, but not hard jabs. I could tell he was pulling his punches, not wantimg to even attempt to hurt his opponent. His opponent started to escalate the situation. The guy stayed working his body. No sorry, no ankowlegment of him hurting him. As i watched it play out more, I could tell he was trying to get him to drop his guard, to lead him into what you may ask? A spinning wheel kick thrown at about 50% power. Mind you we are untrained. No head or mouth gear. I know this was a messed up envoirmemt immediately after seeing that. As we were leaving they were gloating about how people canceled their memberships and how they were quitters. I contacted them and gave my concerns. My saftey was completely disregarded. These guys only want punching bags that are willing to pay 50$ to be there. Stay away! it's sad too because I bet the BJJ is quality!

As a 45 year Professional Martial Arts Instructor, writer, speaker and 24 year Veteran Teacher at…read morean Ivy League University, I give Syracuse Martial Arts Academy a Five Star rating. Martial Arts isn't about violence, power, and control over others. Rather, it is about using violence as a very last response, having the Personal Power to better ourselves and learning how to control our body and our mind! I have been affiliated with SMAA for nearly 20 years and I can attest first hand that I have witnessed the highest levels of courtesy, respect for others and a sincere interest in their students, clients and visitors rare in our society today. Regardless of the day, each and every time I enter the doors at Syracuse Martial Arts, I am greeted with smiles and warmth. The program at SMAA reflects this demeanor at the highest level as well. I have taught well over 20 Workshops at the school and the skills, attitude and energy is always consistently solid! For anyone that may say negative things about SMAA, I can only shake my head and think of what my teacher, the Top Student Of Bruce Lee and the Leading Authority on Martial Arts in the World today once said to me..."They only tackle the MAN with the ball. If you weren't worthy of criticism or threatening, you would be ignored."

My husband and I were genuinely disappointed by our experience with this dojo before we ever had…read morethe chance to step through the door. We were visiting Syracuse for one week, and my husband--a seasoned black belt in two different karate styles--called ahead simply to ask if he could attend a few drop-in classes during our stay. His goal wasn't to "shop around" for a new school. Like many dedicated martial artists, he wanted to continue his training while traveling, train respectfully, and perhaps learn something new from another instructor. The owner's response was shocking. He told us that it would not be okay because he was only interested in committed students and that someone coming in for a week would just be "fooling around" in class and taking time away from his regular students. He said it wasn't something he wanted to get involved with. That response goes against everything we believe the martial arts are supposed to represent. Respect, humility, camaraderie, and the willingness to share knowledge with fellow martial artists are foundational values within the martial arts. Experienced practitioners visiting other dojos has long been a respected tradition when done with courtesy and permission. Instead of welcoming a fellow black belt who reached out respectfully beforehand, my husband was treated as though he would be a burden. If this is how prospective visitors and fellow martial artists are treated, it's worth considering what kind of culture exists within this dojo. A dojo should be a place where respect is freely given to those who show it. Unfortunately, we found the attitude to be exclusionary, dismissive, and contrary to the spirit of martial arts. We left with the impression that this dojo values exclusivity over community. If you're looking for an instructor who embodies the traditional values of honor, respect, and mutual learning, our experience suggests you may want to look elsewhere.
