Really nice to see an upscale Black-owned restaurant in Lexington. The vibe and presentation definitely stand out in a smaller, slower-paced city. Customer service started off strong but slowed down a bit as the night went on. I ordered the fried chicken with mac and cheese, greens, and cabbage. I was told beforehand that slower food times are pretty normal here, so I expected a bit of a wait. Luckily I wasn't starving when I arrived. So, I have mixed feelings about this business. I love supporting black owned businesses. Also, I will admit that my first visit was with a very large group. There were about 20 of us. We did make reservations so they were expecting us. This was on a Monday night. For the size of our party as well as other patrons that were in the restaurant (and it was full) they only had two hostesses working. And they were also serving. Well, really one lady was taking orders. The other young lady was helping her bring the food out. There was a bartender who took our drink orders, but she was also managing DoorDash orders. We arrived at 6 PM and it took about 90 minutes to 2 hours for our food to come out after ordering it. First of all, it took a very long time for them to even come around and take our order, then the bartender had to come and take our drink orders. It took her 90 minutes to even start to make the drinks. And when I asked her what was taking so long, she said that there were only two people working. By the way, there was also another large party in the back room celebrating a birthday. I just don't understand why the owners, who knew about these two large parties in advance, would only have 2 to 3 staff working. I will say that the food was amazing! I guess it was worth the wait. I ordered the catfish with macaroni and cheese and the sweet potato casserole. Everything was delicious. Other people in my group ordered the chicken and waffles, salmon and lamb chops, etc. Everyone enjoyed their food. Because I wanted to try the chicken and waffles, I decided to place a to go order the following Wednesday evening. I placed it through DoorDash. I placed my order at around 6:30 PM, the app told me it wouldn't be ready until 7:01 PM. I kept checking in the app and I noticed that the order had never been updated so I called the restaurant to make sure that they had received the order. The young lady who took my call, said that she made a mistake and never confirmed the order. But that it would be ready in 7 minutes. I waited another 10 minutes before going inside. Upon letting them know that I was there for my DoorDash order. I was told that it would be another 5 minutes. It turned out to be another 15 minutes. Another long wait. I have to say, however, the chicken and waffles weren't that great. The chicken was just OK, the waffles tasted like wet paper. I don't know what it was. They weren't buttermilk. I can't place my finger on what they tasted like. They were just very plain and soggy and not good. So overall, most of the food is good; the staff is nice, but you can tell they are stressed out and overworked. If you're not in any hurry, then you won't mind waiting an hour or more for your food. Just keep ordering drinks or eat a small snack in advance. I don't know if I'd ever return. Definitely I wouldn't return on an empty stomach. read more

Visited this restaurant for an outing with my siblings. Our server was new and was trying her best. However, the wait time for appetizers was around 45 minutes. I had garlic parmesan chicken wings and they were too salty and overly seasoned to enjoy. I ate one and passed the rest to my party and even took the rest to-go with other family and friends reporting back their displeasure. The highlight of my dining experience was the vegetable sides entree. It had cabbage, collard greens, sweet potato casserole and macaroni and cheese. My favorite was the sweet potato casserole. The food here is easily 5-star quality--nothing on my plate needed a thing. It was absolute perfection, and that cornbread? Yum! When we saw a tour bus pull up, we got nervous about the crowd, but the layout is surprisingly spacious and handled the rush well. The crowd was diverse and friendly. There were several larger parties and events that night. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful with our order. The music was a bit loud when we first arrived, but it was lowered as the night went on, making for a much better vibe. My only real complaint was the bathroom; the ladies restroom was out of order so the mens became unisex and lacked paper towels. I would also ride share there. We didn't find parking to be great. I was in the mood for Soul Food and decided to go to Sassy Bleu. Sassy Bleu is more upscale than other souls food places in the area. I was one impressed by the knowledgeable staff. The hours on the door read they close at 10:30 but when we got there we were told they close at 9 pm. The menu was limited since we got there at 8:45. The only minus was the food was not hot and they only had fried food available. This was disappointing, but the food had great flavor. I will definitely be back. read more

Five stars for the food! If you love soul food, add Sassy Bleu to your list. We arrived around 2:15 for a late lunch, and we had to wait a while for our food-- probably because we came at an odd time. However, my husband took one bite of his bleu cheese burger and said, "OH MY GOSH! This is worth the wait!" I had the three vegetable plate with fantastic collard greens, yummy corn pudding, and THE BEST macaroni and cheese in Lex (sorry, Jeff Ruby's--gotta be honest). We will definitely be back! The interior is brighter, less crowded, and more pleasant than previous restaurants in this location. I would like to start this off with saying what a huge disappointment this place is. Not because the service is non-existent, or because the prices are way too high for what is being served $17 for a lunch salad, but because the food (when it finally comes) is really good, so it sucks that I won't be back because I know what I'm missing but it's just not worth the wait and rudeness of the staff. On my first visit we ordered a couple of cocktails and an appetizer. The drinks came out in a reasonable time (we were sitting at the bar, so that is to be expected) but it took 45 minutes for our appetizer to be dropped off. The bar tender never asked if we wanted another round or checked on us once during this time BUT she definitely had her fair share of cigarette breaks. We ordered the Philly Cheese Steak Eggrolls, and they are to die for... if you have an hour to kill waiting on a fried app. Decided to give them a second chance for lunch today. Sat down at 12:00 noon and were the only customers in the building. It took our waitress almost 20 minutes to take our order and we had to flag her down (still the only customers in the building). At 1:00 we reminded her that it was our lunch 'hour', and her response was "I KNOW, I am going to bring YOUR food out soon." We all four had empty drinks and never received any refills. Our food did come out shortly after and it was as good as a lunch salad can be. When the food came, I handed my credit card to be ran because I had to get back to the office, she didn't bring my card back until after I finished eating. 1.5 hours for 3 salads and 1 fried chicken meal is way too long to spend, especially during lunch when most people have 30 - 60 minutes available to them. To top it off the stfu and wait attitude from the one person assigned to front of house was completely unacceptable. Reading these reviews, I can see many people have had the same experience. If you are interested in the food, I'd say door dash it and be prepared for a wait but do it now before it goes out of business. So the good stuff: Soul Food Spring Rolls are HUGE & DELICIOUS! They're more than an appetizer. Please share with others. Fried cabbage was good but needed to be drained. My to go container was full of juice. Macaroni & cheese was delicious & creamy. Shrimp was small & not very seasoned. I'll come back for dine-in. I always struggle to think of a definitive place to recommend to out-of-towners or friends when they ask for something new or where to eat. This is now that place for me. Catfish, fried chicken, collard greens, Mac n cheese, fried cabbage, and the cornbread are all legitimately top 3 or the top of each I've ever had. I'm not just saying that. The burger was excellent, and the seasoned fries were outstanding (I judge restaurants by their ability to deliver hot crispy fries to the table). The waitress was nice and attentive. Yes, it was a little slow given it was not crowded, but it's a sit down restaurant, not Chipotle! Loved everything about it. Great space. Super friendly service. Well stocked bar and superb food. I'm a soul food fan from way back. As in it is what my great- grandparents and grandparents cooked. Hard to say anything good. The service was terrible, took an hour and we were the only table in the place. We had to ask were our food was only to be told the ticket didn't make it to the kitchen. The food was awful. The Mac n cheese had separated and was not edible. The cornbread was burnt. The fried chicken was over cooked and dry.
