ayce sushi in one of the coolest and most immersive interiors we came across in montreal…read more manga bistro goes all in on the anime theme, and you know exactly what you're walking into the moment you step inside. the ceiling is lined with rows of glowing red japanese lanterns, while the walls are practically covered from floor to ceiling in manga and anime artwork. shelves are packed with model collectibles and figurines, and a massive canopy of pink cherry blossoms stretches along one side of the dining room. anime characters are everywhere you look, posters, comics, figures and artwork turning the entire restaurant into something that feels part japanese pop culture museum, part sushi spot. even the seating areas are tucked into this colourful, highly themed space. it's busy, energetic, and definitely not your typical ayce restaurant. follow them on instagram for a free yuzu drink, then grab a tablet at the table and start ordering. the tablet ordering system makes it easy to work your way through the extensive ayce menu, and there is no shortage of options. sashimi, nigiri, sushi rolls, hand rolls, tempura, grilled dishes and plenty more, the list just keeps going. the rice to fish ratio was good, and the sashimi was solid. there was enough variety to keep everyone at the table happy, whether you prefer raw, cooked, fried, or rolled. bibs were provided, which i appreciated and fully utilized. with this much food coming to the table, protecting the outfit was absolutely necessary. the atmosphere is casual and lively, with tables filled with groups enjoying the all you can eat experience. between the glowing lanterns, walls of manga, shelves of collectibles and cherry blossom display, there's plenty to look at while you wait for the next round of food. my only wish was for a better dessert selection. i would have loved to see green tea or black sesame ice cream to finish things off. come hungry, because there's a LOT to choose from. come for the ayce sushi, but honestly, stay for the decor, manga bistro turns dinner into a full on anime experience.

Came here with a friend, and we both ordered kaisen don and shared an okonomiyaki pancake appetizer and a hot sake. The okonomiyaki was delicious -- it had been sliced into pieces and then deep fried, which is a nice twist; topped with bonito and served with some kind of spicy mayo sauce. Kaisen don was excellent -- looks smallish but was quite filling in fact, thanks to the nice bed of subtly seasoned rice underneath the mini-mountain of various sashimi, which tasted fresh and was well-presented. There was also a piece of uni on it, which I enjoyed immensely. Sake was pretty good too, a warm alternative for winter. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Love the down-to-earth atmosphere of the place, it really feels like a neighbourhood favourite. We had come early-ish for our reservation, and by the time we left, the resto was full -- a good sign. Only gripe was that the paper menu was a couple of bucks more expensive than what is posted online on the resto's website -- and only for some items, not all of them. But given the issue of inflation recently, it's understandable that restaurants can also barely keep up with rising prices for ingredients too. Overall, a tasty experience -- both my friend and I plan to come back.

I do wish the buns were hot/toasted but hey its still good nonetheless. Then I ordered the chef 5 choices as my main course... Why? I just don't know what to order, the best is to order this set menu so I can try a little bit of everything Hehe. It packed with fried chicken, pita chips with egg plan dip, takoyaki, salade and sashimi rice bowl (aka poke bowl). Everything is good and fresh... Unfortunately the rice was a little too warm for my taste. I thought the space would be bigger. It made it feel like you were on top of others. Nice quaint dark charge just compact. I had reserved the sushi bar. Now we had expected to be able to see what the chefs were doing but due to the height of the wood bar that was impossible. Also, we had expected a more personalized experience as where the chefs interact as had previously at other Japanese restaurants in Jamaica, the U.S. and while living in Japan. Here they just make up the orders. I would suggest a table to anyone since they do not interact, you're just getting a lot of noise. Also, you are in a high traffic spot for the employees coming and going from the back. All this aside the real surprise was the menu. It is unique as previewed online via their website prior to make a reservation. But found to be misleading/poorly formatted. The section for Sushi Rolls be it 6 or 8 pieces, at the top of each respective page states in red with parenthesis (6 pieces) and the other page (8 pieces). Below are the various rolls laid out with next to each one in red with parenthesis either a (6) or (8) depending on which page you are on. Now I assumed this was the price per roll as I found most menus in Montreal have a format of i.e. 00, 00.00, (0), (0$), 00$, and 00.00$. With a few in place of the $ sign using CAD. I did not think that if a page is already labeled at the top that anyone would format redundantly the amount given. And the actual price is 4 times that. Now I am not saying they aren't making a quality product. It was all very delicious. Presentation was impeccable but honestly to us it wasn't over the top or within reason of the price. I would have to say this is the most expensive sushi I have had. I believe mine was 37 CAD ($27 US). In the U.S. typically I'd say rolls range from $6-$20 USD. The cost didn't really matter, just wasn't expecting it. And again, the rolls are unique, normally not found elsewhere and were delicious. I just think the website should reflect the price of and not the amount when itis already stated, it is just misleading. Also note if your look at the drink's menu online, there are no parenthesis but to the right of each beverage item in red is a number indicating the price. So, you really shouldn't have it on one menu then be different on another. Drink wise I started with NIKKA MIYAGIKYO PEATED 2021 SINGLE MALT for 35$ (25 USD). I had never heard of it, but I like smokey drinks. A quick check showed this bottle goes for around $250USD. So, I'd say the price equates properly. But I also based this on a shot (being 1.5oz or 44.4ml). When it came out in the standard 6oz whiskey glass it was barely visible. I'd guess based on having these glasses maybe 1/2 an ounce. So, someone either really mis poured or...... I hadn't even tasted yet when another server (we had 2 it seems) came by and asked if I would like another drink and went to take the glass. I said I hadn't even tried it yet. He apologized and said he thought the glass was empty, so that is saying something. On the note of drinks, under sake you can find 300ml DASSAI 45 JUNMAI DAI GINJO for 85$ ($62 USD), this generally sells for about $35 USD. Literally around the corner @ Gyu-Kaku (Japanese hibachi) they sell it on their menu for (300ml) 55$ ($40 USD). Hidden Fish is a 42% markup over retail. Now dessert, amazing. Not found online. I ordered this cheesecake mouse with coconut cream top and an anglaise base. My wife, who is not big on desserts, took a taste then pretty much ate the whole thing. If for nothing else, we would go back to just have this dessert again. And I am kind of curious about the other options.
