My friends and I just got home from the most fantastic time at the Sausalito cruising club watching a wonderful band, dancing and meeting new people! What a gem this place is ~everybody's friendly. There's a great vibe and it's a must visit destination. I don't remember having so much fun ever. The band that was playing was so fantastic. They were reimagining certain original songs and putting their special touch on it and it was simply fantastic.! read more

The Club greeter is less than friendly. Doorman was threatening. Almost hostile. As a member of Yacht and boating clubs around the world, this was the least friendly greeting given to my husband and I. This occurred here last night. It was definitely a turn off. Any other club has a daily volunteer greeting MEMBER who welcomes guests. The visitor is at least invited to stay for one drink to socialize with other members. Maybe ya'll are just too exclusive to want anyone to visit and apply for membership. read more

Rude!! Doorman/Bouncer is a real piece of work. I don't think he gets the concept of guest service. Or does he realize that members pay his salary. Take a breath and use your head not your muscle. The worst bands ever! Loud obnoxious and out of key most of the time. They had ONE good band and then went back to either house bands with no talent or flat caterwalling people that made karaoke singers look good! A 600 dollar yearly fee to even get inside. Save your money and hearing! read more

It is actually way worse than what this previous review has described. Someone please take the served food to be tested by the board of health and you will be surprised at what you will find. My first time hanging out in Sausalito or "the sauce" as my friend calls it. We decided to get some dinner before heading to dugout bar for some boozing. When I heard the name of the place, I envisioned a snooty yacht club vibe serving sauerkraut and boiled goose. I was assured by my friend that the food was good and the environment was very casual. One of my friends is a member of the cruising club, so we just had to pay 15 bucks for the buffet dinner. They had a bunch of different dishes, fish tacos, seafood linguine, roasted vegetables, and amazing bbq/hoisin sauce chicken. There was also a good band that played some mellow funky music. read more

I finally had the chance to experience the famous/infamous Cruising Club. This place has been a Sausalito fixture for years, and now I understand why. I came here recently for a friend's birthday bash. She rented out the entire space on a Saturday night, so I didn't really have a chance to meet/interact with any of the "salty" resident bar flies (which this place is known for). In any case, it's a great spot for hosting a private event. It's def off the beaten path (on Napa St.; just off Bridgeway; near Dunphy Park; right on the water). You might want to leave a trail of bread crumbs so that you can find your way back. The Cruising Club has a fascinating history. After World War Two, local servicemen decided that they needed a place to have fun and decompress. And so they founded the Sausalito Cruising Club. The Cruising Club clubhouse is actually a surplus World War Two munitions barge. So you're essentially drinking/chilling out on an old docked boat/dive bar. I won't lie - the interior could probably use a cosmetic make-over. This place ain't fancy, nor is it pretending to be. Though to be honest, that's part of the charm. It's a cool, secluded spot for bday parties, happy hours, Speakeasy-style parties. They boast a full bar and plenty of room for live music/dancing. If you're hosting an event, you're allowed to bring in outside catering (probably a wise choice). Long story short... I had a fun time here. Although the two bartenders were a bit junior, they more than made up for their lack of experience with friendly vibes. And let's face it, it can't be easy slinging drinks for a group of 100+ thirsty locals (especially when there's an open tab). I'll def be back! read more

Yikes. I get it. I really do. I get the allure and the romanticism of yachting around the world on a boat. What I don't get?? The guys who are REALLY REALLY in to it. The guys that look like Thurston Howell and Captain Ron and use EVERY nautical term while trolling around in boats smaller than a Toyota Prius. I was on my (now sunken, long story) boat in Tahoe last summer getting gas. A guy introduced himself as Captain Jack. And he asked for "permission to come aboard." Mind you, my boat was 29 feet long and designed to haul my fat ass out of the water on a hyperlite board. My boat, much like his, was NOT the Love Boat. I really felt like beating Captain Jack with an oar. What brought me to the Sausalito Crusing Club? We had a company event here and let's just say that giving a presentation while the building is sinking into the mud while the tide was going out was fairly interesting. The food was decent, the place was damn near arctic and the men's bathroom, sorry, head, was across the recently swabbed decks on the aft side of the bow, or was it stern? The staff was, well, salty. It was nearly 1am on a weekday, and I had moved into Sausalito, maybe a night or two before. I am on my way back from a walk with a good friend of mine (Yes, I know that is late) and we hear some music across the street from my house. We walk over to a big floating....boat? House boat? Floating thing on the water? Okay, so I am not sure quiet what it is at this point, so we walk up to it, and try to walk aboard. I notice a Members Only sign, but disregard it. While walking up I see some colorful characters dancing, and laughing next to the bar, and clearly having a good time. "Hey!" We got spotted. "What are you guys doing?" "I just moved across the..." before I could finish he said come on in. He introduced me to the Commodore, a nice lady who had a few drinks this evening so every politely talking two inches from my face showed us around, gave me a guest pass, and told us to make ourselves at home. We stay a few, and decide it's a good time to take off, and go back home. We get back home, and I can't but think how cool that place is. "Whacko's, yuppies, salties, all in one place having a great time. Cheers to the Cruising Club, with a membership being cheap as dirt, and knowing from that one night that you can have a couple of fun nights a month there, it is certainly a place I will find myself frequenting so long as it stays afloat :) If you have never been, go on and check it out. If you are open to culture, and meeting some good people, this is the place. read more

I happened here on Sunday night, to see a friend who was singing with the band. I don't spend much time in Sausalito, and had no idea what to expect. When we arrived, we were cheerfully greeted by the house dog at the pier. The staff was friendly and the place was completely charming and seafaring funky... The buffet had a huge variety: lasagna, pesto penne, chicken, two kinds of salad, mac and cheese, sausage...more that I can't remember; and I'll admit that I went back three times to stuff my face. The place was packed, and the musicians were wonderful...playing mostly jazz and blues standards. After endless requests, my friend sang a lovely rendition of Patsy Cline...pretty much a perfect Sunday night. read more

My husband and I had to join this club to accomodate our boat loan people in Marin. We live in the East Bay and had not much affiliation with Marin County so the boat loan people fixed that...and, now we are members of the Sausalito Cruising Club. After moving for weeks we decided to check it out. We found a going concern (as it were) that seemed like a neighborhood gathering spot sporting that joie de vie that we travel far and wide to discover. We danced (hadn't done that in years) and had a simple meal that was fresh, healthy, generous and delicious (I am jonesing for that balsamic-pear-spinach salad right now!)...basically how I cook at home although I cannot get the groceries for $15! The ambiance was comfortable and friendly (I thought Jack London was going to walk in and ask for a game of cards any minute)-I guess it was the other revelers or the old, floating building or how refreshingly intelligent the hosts/staff were. It's a bit of an anachronism that's hard to explain because I've passed the little street that it's on about a hundred times without noticing it. Okay, now my favorite aspect: Quito and Gina(sp?) are fun, professional, friendly, quick-witted and the perfect hosts. Thanks for the wild time!! read more

I went to enjoy a show there on Sunday it was gross because of ALL THE DOGS THAT WHERE RUNNING AROUND the place.This is a place that service food,disgustingly gross.and when one of the arts gets off the sage has to complain about the issue with all of these DOGS AROUND that is just disrespectful and disgusting toward the customers and the arts. If the owner does not see the problem with this issue you as a customer should take that into consideration when going there where there is food.Yuck I use to work in a restaurant and sanitation is sanitation is sanitation in regards when you in a place that services food.Period! This place is pretty unique and funky (in a good way). It's a bar and restaurant on a boat/barge. Need to be a member or know a member to get in. Has a fireplace to give it that cozy feel. Has a stage for bands and dancing if your into that kind of stuff. read more

Hey. This place is fun. Good live music, quality buffet and bar snacks, and Kito (the commodore) is a true master of ceremonies. Get some tequila, grab some home made grub (and BOMB pastries from the Italian chef) and kick it on the ol' deck. This little gem gets five stars, but those five stars are in comparison to other 'locals only, dive/casual bar with scratch-made food, and a small stage for local artists overlooking the San Francisco Bay.' OK, that pretty much narrows it down to this place and this place alone. Yes, members only, so get on the guest list. If you know a band or soloist playing a gig, be sure to be there. It will be a lot of fun. Food: tonight's fare was vegetarian and meat pizzas, salad, cole slaw, olives, fresh fruits & vegetables, and house made dressers ( cookies and banana cake). All served family buffet style. Let's just say, I got my cover value. Barkeep was great, prices are reasonable, selection is pretty good. Hostess was awesome! So, it's a bit run down, they need a new roof, when the tide is out it lists to the bow, and the men's head is walk outside. Who the $&@# cares! You are on an old barge, eating good food, drinking with friends, have a million dollar view, and are listening to live music. You can't get much better than that in my book. read more

This is great little place known to the locals and has been mentioned as the replacement for the Sweet water. I am not so sure about that as the Sweet water is a landmark in Marin this is a great alternative. My friend is a member and I went back in February for the first time and have been back several times since. Monday evenings they have a band and dancing with plenty of room to shake your money maker. There is a buffet all you can eat dinner for $15.00 which is pretty decent and filling, the full bar is great with good prices on the drinks and a very friendly barkeep. This is on a floating type barge and the trick is to go on a night that the tide is in not out or you get the low tide smell. There are great characters in "Saucy" and you can pick up some great conversations and dance partners at the Cruising Club. They are also open on Saturdays for the same type of evening. read more

Ive stopped in from time to time over the last 30 years.Its alway provided a fun atmosphere and seemed to be disorganized with too many different people running it. RECENTLY..things are changing.The place is cleanner still crazy,but you can tell improvement is on its way.I hoped for a slightly more kid friendly version..so Daddy could relax with a coctail or two before rowing back to my boat,maybe a seperate room ..ping pong..pool..tv for kids.My first thought was why not pull a small houseboat in for an official office and playroom.? I also hoped maybe to help put together a small sailing program for adults and kids..but i Guess the city will be doing that next door at the old Casses. Soooooo the emphasis is still the music..foods improved immensly..and LANCE is not only a great guy but a good bartender! OHHH one more thing..How about a neon sign in script that sez..SAUSALITO crusing club on the roof.....Passing boats will stop asking..What is that place! I really enjoy The Cruising Club. I don't even mind that at low tide the dance floor lists to the side opposite the bar. Some of the very best bands in the bay area (Medicine Ball Band, Rumors, Electric Avenue and other notable bands) play there often. The food is basic but good and even healthy, the drinks are reasonably priced and the accompanying creative deserts are the best. The food and beverage servers are as pleasant and accommodating as at any more expensive establishments. Keeto the head bartender, hostess and desert server (who sometimes gives seconds) is one of the hardest working folks I know. He always acknowledges my presence and goes out of his way to please everyone. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place - unpretentious and cool. We were throwing a party for 70 friends to watch college football and eat BBQ. A coworker suggested the Cruising Club. It is a converted barge floating right off of Dunphy Park. Killer views from the deck, great bands on weekends, lots of TV's for sports, and the employees are really fun and hilarious people. Chef Quito is a great cook and sports encyclopedia. They were very easy to work with as we worked out details of the party. Everyone had a blast, this place is super funky, cool, and the members have all been very nice. We signed up for a membership and can't wait to go back. They have kayaks and a Laser sailboat for the members' use. It is the next best thing to owning waterfront property, and the membership is very reasonable (not to mention reciprocal privileges at most SF Yacht clubs). read more

Went there in January with friends and had some fun, music was good, food nothing to write home about, unique atmosphere, interesting mix of people, friendly, laid back place. It is not your typical "yacht club" type of experience, which makes it unique. ONE BIG PROBLEM- PARKING!!!. Parking is plentiful in front of the club, but after 2 am the whole parking lot becomes a no parking zone. This means, with the entire parking lot becoming a no parking zone, you are being forced to move your car away without regards to whether you are intoxicated or not. So it is either move your car and get a possible DUI or worst (accident) or get a parking citation and have your car towed since the sign also reads; Tow Away Zone. This happened to me and I wonder how many more over the years. I guess I was lucky I only received a ticket and was not towed. After realizing that I had probably drank more than one should when operating a motor vehicle and having arranged other transportation for me and my party, it dawned on me that I can't leave my car there. I then went back inside the Cruising Club and asked about the situation. I was given a placemat which read Sausalito Cruising Club on it, was told to put it on my dash board and "there should be no problem". The next day when I returned to retrieve my vehicle I was surprised with a big fat parking ticket. After I calmed down, I realized how bad the situation is. An establishment where people come to drink and party and has plenty of parking in front when one arrives, in the form of a parking lot, all of a sudden like magic becomes a no parking zone at a time in the morning when most patrons are already way past being able to operate a vehicle legally. A perfectly good parking lot becomes a non-parking zone? Why, I asked myself. There has to be a reason. Entrapment? Some grudge? After further investigation and talking to a few people I was given two explanations. #1. The city has a problem with the so called anchor outs ( people living on mostly dilapidated old boats on Richardson bay). In order to discourage them (they are legal) parking is prohibited so they have don't have a place to park their cars. #2. It turns out that the whole property which the Cruising Club is situated on was to be developed into a new marina. The Cruising Club started a petition to stop the development, gathered more than a thousand signatures and won. It seems that they are not on , ,best terms with the city and the "city's" "good ole boys", and thus the no parking problem. It seems to me that the latter is the most probable. Why does the Sausalito Police not honor the Cruising club placemat on the dash board. Why does the Cruising club not come up with a little more serious way for it's patrons to inform the police, such as a official placard to put on the dash board Probably they don't bother since the police would not honor it anyway. It seems that with making this parking lot a no parking zone in the middle of the night that the city of Sausalito is encouraging drunk drivers and causing a very dangerous situation. After all, the signs threaten that your car will be towed not just ticketed. Many intoxicated individuals will not make the right decision and decide to drive away. I do not see any legitimate reason that this parking lot should become no parking in the middle of the night, especially not because of some grudge. Something should be done about this. read more

Love it, Love it, Love it. This place is unpretentious, full of friendly and polite people. The staff is unbelievably nice and the $15 buffet is pretty darned good. Can't think of a better place for an evening, not even those posh clubs where you will drop $100 bucks a night. read more

To be a member cost's $300 or is it $350 a year, well worth it, you can have dinner for $10 (for members) $l5.00 for non members, please sign in if not a member......and that entitles you to go visit any Yacht Club in the world, except the St Francisc Yacht Club in S.F. (we don't care to) I love taking friends from out of town, they can't believe the place.
