I don't know how I missed writing a review over the years; I see I've posted pictures, but never the review! Savage's is a Birmingham/Homewood staple. Many people have fond memories of going to get new shoes next door before getting to select a favorite cookie or petit four afterwards. This is something I did with my own children as they grew up. I also remember leaving early for visting family out of town in order to get a coconut cake to bring. Imagine how lucky I felt upon finding one on the 'day-old' rack at 8 in the morning! It was still just as fresh and delicious, though I would have happily paid full price. They also had fantastic gingerbread men at a fraction of the price other bakeries were charging. The gingerbread was the right amount of spice and chewiness. My kids' favorite was perhaps the petit fours; felt very special and fancy to have their own individually decorated cakes. Sadly, Savage's announced they would be closing mind-February, and that date has now been moved up to February 6th. I went by yesterday to hopefully buy one last item. I had time, but apprently not enough. I stood in line a little more than an hour and 15 minutes when I had to step out of line for another appointment; I was *third* in line at the time. So I was surely disappointed, as they had just restocked the petit fors and still had the cheese pockets and sand tarts I was seeking. I visited Savage's for the first time today after reading rave reviews about their king cake. Upon entering I saw the king cakes on a table towards the back. I walked over and they looked great. I didn't see a price but kinda decided I'd likely get it whatever the price because the reviews seemed That Good. None the less, I waited for one of the two ladies working to finish helping others to ask about the price. Several other customers were in the shop. Me: What's the price of the king cakes? Lady (1): LOOK!! LOOK!! At the top of the COOLER! All the prices ARE RIGHT UP THERE! You JUST HAVE TO LOOK!! Lady (2): On the THAT white bar on the cooler. Just Look. Another customer showed me the bar she referenced but there's no price for king cakes. And why would there be?? The king cakes aren't in the cooler. Me: I don't see the price for king cakes? Lady(1): (no longer screaming) ... Oh. I don't know. She'll have to get that for you. (Referencing the lady standing beside her) Lady(2): (no longer screaming - hopefully, realizing the initial response was WILD) ... $22 for the small, $29 for the large. The price was not posted. The way she spoke was embarrassing. It was rude. I picked up a small one .. but put it back down and left. I doubt I'll ever step foot in this bakery again. Terrible customer service read more

Savages was open for over 85 years... was a great memory for me as a child, visiting our family in alabama and my aunt.or my grandmother taking the grands to Savages. I'll never forget them and now I got to go on their very last day open which was this past Saturday. They will be missed! read more

Savage's reminds me of the consummate bakeru where the aroma is intoxicating and the designs sre beautiful. Throw in some superior service, affordable prices, and a killer variety and it easily becomes a five star establishment. To no surprise, many of the designs cater to the local flavor for all things Alabama and Auburn. Whether it's cookies, coffee cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, there is no shortage of variety. I really am impressed with their customized cakes, which look perfect for just about any occasion. The real winner is the service. The girls behind the counter are enthusiastic to provide recommendations and are professional as well. After picking up a big order, one even asked if they could help me gift wrap the item and even brought my items to the car. That's service! So my husband brought me here while on vacation visiting his family. He stated that they had good desserts so I wanted to try it. I walked in and if you know me, I don't like chocolate. The place had about 10 people and I think there was a kid's birthday party concluding. I saw people buying cakes, pies and cookies from the display. There were plenty of cookies and iyer desserts for sale. The employees were nice and friendly. When I asked one if the young ladies if their icing was buttercream she said, "it's white icing." I'm thinking I can see that lol. So I asked another female employee and she stated that yes it was buttercream on the cupcakes. Everything I had was ok. Nothing was great. The chocolate chip cookies that had pecan in them must have had small pieces of pecans because I barely tasted them. If you want a dessert this placa had a variety but im not sure if I would return. I have been a Savages customer for decades. Their baked goods are very good. For years I have placed orders for all the major holidays in order to get all my families favorites and had them packed to travel. Even doing so this Thanksgiving. Just went in to place my Christmas order only to be told that if it wasn't on their Holiday order sheet it wasn't available to order. Not much of what I wanted was on their sheet. First time here - Bad service. Not super kid friendly. Small space and a little overpriced. Only giving 2 stars because the food/pastries had a great taste. I came here for the first time today to meet a friend for lunch. Knowing that this place is loved by locals, I have been excited to try it. I told someone I was coming here and they said "Get ready for terrible service!" When I came in, I immediately noticed how crammed it was inside because they had so many Christmas decorations/food out. A family came in and a female worker kept telling the children to not touch things. The kids weren't being bad and I felt like that was out of line for her to say that considering how much stuff they had out. After my friend arrived, we got in line to order food and one of the workers told me they weren't serving lunch during the holidays. I told her I was confused by this because I just saw someone order food. They ended up changing their mind and taking out order. The food took a long time, and none of the workers were very nice. I ended up getting a Rueben sandwich (very small portions) a snowman cookie, and a cinnamon roll. All had a great taste. In total it was $15. Probably wouldn't come back here. read more

This is a very popular bakery in Downtown Homewood. It's been around since I was a kid, or...actually even before that honestly! I just remember coming here ever since I was little. Most recently, they catered to the UAB Department of Medicine with personalized cookies for 2020! Not only were they super cute, they were super delicious too! I honestly wasn't expecting much thinking this cookie was only meant to be decorative. Wow was I wrong!! The cookie and the icing were both so tasty! My wife and I was in my home town for the Christmas holidays and while showing her around she noticed Savages Bakery. I told her that I been there since I was a younger man but they had great cakes. She wanted to stop in for a second and look around. She was very excited about what she saw and ordered some cookies and cupcakes and said that it was delicious. The staff was very nice, patience and attentive to her needs. This moment reminded me of my childhood and it her an instant fan. We'll definitely be back for another taste! read more

Completely hit or miss in terms of the quality. I've had things that are amazing and some just so-so. Unfortunately, no matter what you choose, the price is going to be high. The reason it's getting two stars is based on the service (also hit or miss). They mostly employee high-school kids and I know because I actually worked here for a few weeks in high school. I couldn't stand it longer than that... On my recent visit, I waited about 10 minutes to be helped because the one worker was taking a cake order. After getting my cookies, another 5-10 minutes spent waiting to pay because again, only 1 employee. I bought 8 iced sugar cookies that were decorated for the Bama national championships and it came to over $20. I was shocked at the price and said so, at which point a high school worker told me it was due to the extreme intricacy of the frosting design and how much time it took to do. Please. Like I said, I worked here in high school. I know exactly how much time it took for someone to drop a tub of white icing on the cookies and for a different person to make three strokes with a red, thin frosting tip. These decorators are like machines. The cookies might have taken all of 20 seconds each. I am just done with the rude attitude of the kids who work here and won't be coming back on my next trip to Birmingham. read more

Meh. I stumbled upon this place while on a road trip of the south. I have a huge sweet tooth, so I could not resist. What I ordered: -1 Petit Four (vanilla almond flavoring) -2 iced sugar cookies What put me off most about this place was not the so-so desserts (the petit four was pretty tasty), but the staff working here. No one said hello when we walked in even though there was no one in the bakery occupying them. I interacted with two staff members, and I don't think either one said one word to me. I'm not expecting a parade when I go into a business, but some warmth is nice especially in a bakery. (read other reviews... seems like this is the norm for them - sad!) Two of my favorite items at this bakery are the cheese straws and the chocolate drops. The chocolate drops taste very similar to brownies, but are hardened into a more candy like texture. The cheese straws are buttery and flaky with just the right amount of spice. The iced cookies are a local favorite. The icing is melted into a hard and glaze on top of the cookies. Different characters or shapes are available throughout the year. Right now it is summertime and they are offering crabs, seahorses and flowers. The best thing about savages bakery is the price! Most of their items are very reasonably priced. You can walk out with a box of goodies for less than $10, some of which only cost $.60 each. This place is a local institution. Man, this place is good! I've heard about this place since college and always wanted to stop in whenever I'm in Birmingham. Now I have it a whopping 10 minutes away from me which is going to be dangerous. We ordered some of their cupcakes which were really really good. Great homemade icing and cake. The chocolate isn't too overpowering, it just makes you reach for a cold glass of milk to go with it. I loved the strawberry cupcake since it had bits of real strawberry in it and a small dollop of filling in the center. We ordered a whole bunch of different cookies as well and the prices were super reasonable starting at .60. The chocolate drops were rich and very good with pecan chips in them. Their iconic smiley face cookie was great for a sugar cookie. Just be sure to get the regular size because that is much cheaper than the baggie filled with 6 small smiley cookies which they charged me $5.70 for. Hence, only 4 stars. I loved the almond macarons and the cheese straws were good with a little kick of heat. Be sure to try their grilled cheese sandwich on Saturdays that has turkey and tomato. Really, really good sandwich! So stop in and grab some bread to go and a few cookies to munch on. Worth the visit! read more

Trivial it seems. I've shopped in this bakery for many years. I ordered 2 dozen Fruit Bars with several petit fours, at the cash register it was discovered the lady didn't prepare my fruit bar order, (the tray in the case was full of perfect sliced bars) a box was delivered to the front a practically shoved into my hands. I took it and drove home out of town when I arrived I discover a box full of pieces. I called the store and was told to bring them back, since it was close to the time they closed , I was told to take a photo and send it to them. I called again on Saturday to be told the manager would review it. I called on Monday and was told their decision was the photo looked like only 6 were broken and they would replace 6 These were for a meeting at the local church. I had to place 3 calls, Savage's never returned a phone call or replied to my email. How the determined it was 6 bars broken from the pile of pieces is beyond me. I am in love with this place and their desserts but, most of all, the petit fours. This bakery is a staple in Homewood and, honestly, all throughout Birmingham as well. Everyone knows about it and everyone has a dessert or pastry that they love from here. My mom has been going for years (thank you, mom) and while home over the holidays this year I got to accompany her. It smells DELICIOUS -- like you won't even want to wait for the box of things you ordered, so you'll probably have to get a little something else to snack on in the meantime. The petit fours (seriously, get them) are my absolute favorite and a dozen is about $15. Worth it, and you'll want them all. They're like tiny white cakes with a thin layer of icing covering them. Over the holidays they have cute Christmas tree and wreaths iced on them so they're even really good gifts as well -- if you can stand to share them (only slightly kidding). NO stars is the rating... awful taste in cake and icing. Owner's daughter said nothing wrong with the taste. I could not even eat a bite and I smelled a bad smell before I even tried it. They would not do anything for us... not even a coupon for $10 off!!! something would have been better than nothing at all !! We feel as though our business wasn't cared for by them. Don't blame your sorry service on COVID. Savages has been my goto bakery for well over 25 years but a few weeks ago I made my last trip there. They made mistakes on my order. When I complained their inept employees got a deer in the headlights look. I called to complain to the manager, again there wasn't even an apology just lame excuses. Savages is entirely hit or miss. When ordering cakes, you never know if you'll get a fresh product. This can be very embarrassing if the cake is for an event or occasion and no one can eat it. Within the past year or so, the cake batter recipe appears to have been changed to some cheap, yellowish, odd tasting concoction. First it was noticed in the cupcakes, after a while, the change moved to the cakes. While service can be slow, I haven't experienced bad service. The three elderly ladies that work the front counter seem to be the only employees they can keep. Any new faces disappear within a couple of months. I still stop in now and then for a couple of treats. But I now get my cakes from another bakery where items are always fresh and everyone loves the homemade taste. Cakes, desserts, sweet treats are big business these days - not the time for mediocrity. There's so much competition and so many choices in the sweet treat industry now. read more

I have had nothing but great experiences with Savage's so far. I first learned about Savage's after trying their petit fours that was served at a party I attended two years ago. They were wonderfully decorated with a Halloween theme and also delicious. After that, I decided to give their storefront in Homewood a visit. I was not disappointed! My favorite is their their day-old baked goods section. I never fail to get their orange rolls and butterflake biscuits - I highly recommend both of these. I often get their fresh white bread by the loaf, which they will slice for you. They also have cake by the slice and strawberry is my favorite. It has layers of jammy strawberry and the cake itself is very moist while not too sweet, which is just my style. I ordered one for my daughter's birthday and they decorated it to match the invitation. My only complaint is that sometimes it gets so busy there that I loathe to wait to be served and to pay. read more

My lady and I dropped in after lunch down the street and wanted to try a few treats. Walking in the door it was surprisingly quiet with 3 folks behind the counter and even fewer dining. We were helped by a less than enthusiastic employee who never made eye contact and grunted more than spoke. Paying for the treats was a similar experience. A quick side note, I am not expecting a whimsical experience when I roll in to a bakery, but a general enthusiasm is needed when I know I am about to throw down an additional 600 cals or so. I have been a fan of Savage's from childhood. I have the sweetest memories of visiting this bakery for the smiley face cookie, the carrot cake squares, and countless birthday cakes. However, I will not be going back. The past three cakes I have had from there were so dry that they were almost hard. They tasted stale to the point that we didn't finish eating them before throwing the rest away. The staff is never friendly, and going in there seems like an imposition. It's sad to think that such a staple in Birmingham has fallen so far from what it once was. I was wanting to order a king cake for Mardi Gras so I did a Google search and Savage's Bakery came up in the list! I called and ordered a small one. I got an option of cinnamon or cream cheese. I wasn't aware of the options so I went with what the south does and got the cream cheese option. I assumed they were going to bake me one so I said I would be in the next day to get it. When I arrived there was a whole bunch of king cakes out on display. I told them I was here to get the one I ordered and they had placed one behind the counter with my name on it. I guess they just picked one off the shelf and saved it for me? Since I was there I decided to get lunch. I got a box lunch or chicken salad sandwich, half deviled egg, chips and cookie. It was around $8.00. Which isn't a bad price. The food was good and seemed to be fresh! My favorite part was the cookie! It was chocolate chip and very soft! After I ate I went to pay for my lunch and king cake. The king cake was $12.00 I think and I got a cute Alabama state cookie for my friend visiting from NY. The cake was good! I have to say that writing this review pains me. I have LOVED Savage's cakes for a long time. I live in NC now, and I still angle for a Savage's cake at every opportunity. It's common knowledge among my friends and family that if there's cake for me, it should be Savage's. But the last two cakes I've had have both been dry. Still beautifully decorated, but poor quality cake. They've been such a disappointment, especially because I live in NC and so much extra effort goes into getting one. The last one was on a visit to Alabama to celebrate with some friends from another country. I was so happy to share my cake obsession with them... and then I was embarrassed that it was dry. I had ordered a large cake so there would be leftovers for me to bring back to NC... and i ended up throwing it away. The friends were polite and ate a bit, but no one was impressed. If I'm going to spend $60 on a cake, I should expect to enjoy it. My visits to Alabama will now have to include visits to new bakeries to find a new cake to love. It's a sad day.
