I'm amazed with the historic surroundings of Savannah, Georgia. I'm also amazed by some of the food you find here in the area. I spoke to one of the owners on getting a cake ready for pickup ahead of time for my wife's birthday. My wife loves chocolate, but not too sweet. I specifically asked the owner of it was possible to make a chocolate lovers cake that wasn't too sweet, and her response was, "we will make something special for her." Then I asked if they could create a Hufflepuff theme for the deco as well, and they said no problem. She was absolutely correct. The cake was chocolate through and through, and very delicious. And NOT TOO SWEET! The cake's deco was spectacular! One of my wife's favorite cakes so far. Thank you again for such a treat. As fans of the Tortuga Rum Cakes, we were intrigued and purchased 2 (4) Rum Cake Samplers...flavors Vanilla, Chocolate, Key Lime and Coconut. Each was more disappointing than the previous...the texture was too dry in most and the Key Lime was overly tart...all that could have been overlooked if we could taste any rum. Where was it? Glad we stuck to the samplers as any larger size would have been discarded after the taste test. Hope the recipes improve...willing to give it another try on our next visit. read more

Meggan was so great to work with! She did our wedding cake for our wedding at Old Fort Jackson on 11/10/18 and it was absolutely delicious!! She was flexible with our schedule (my husband and I couldn't come in together to taste cakes, so she made a to-go box with cupcake samples and frosting for me to take home). The butter cake with buttercream frosting was a unanimous choice. I was pleasantly surprised by how affordable the cake and delivery was. So I read the reviews and decided to try it. I had the vegetarian sandwich with chips and a pickle for $7.25 and my mom had the balsmich salad ($4.50) and added chicken ($3.25). Not really impressed with the Rum French toast, however the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich was packed with flavor in every bite. I read a ton of good reviews, so I decided to give it a try. Did not go there in person, but I stayed in the nearby Westin, and was celebrating my wife's birthday. A group of us were going, and wanted to give her a surprise cake and birthday celebration. So I decided to order a cake and get it delivered to the hotel concierge. Paid by credit card, and also paid the hefty delivery fee of $15 for a $25 cake. But I did tell the person who took the order (Megan I think), that there is no rush, you can deliver it after you close shop in the evening. Unfortunately, the cake arrived the day after. And obviously, we did not have any use for it. So I told the hotel concierge to not send it to the room. I called Rum Runners the following week and asked for a refund. The lady said they would consider refunding, and gave a handful of lame excuses. Till date, I have not received the refund, after about 25 days. I have to assume that I won't get it back, not that I cannot live without it, but left a bad taste. I trust Yelp reviews 100% and write critical feedback so small businesses can get better. Hope to get a response from the owners. I have the receipt number and order dates if you need to trace it back. I am sure it is a great business, and is highly rated. But for now I would like to keep my rating at a 1 star. read more

At first when you open the door you're confused where you are, as the post office is operating a large counter in the business as well. Also the signage on the door is overwhelming for the post office and not "bakery". I did like the openness of the work side of the bakery and being able to watch all the bakers frosting and mixing. But I'm not sure this business is used to walk in customers. I went with my friend and ordered a couple of slices to go. I was surprised to see the red velvet had only the faintest schmear of frosting on it and the cake itself had no flavor. Its possible the red velvet just isn't their forte. Well, do not associate any of those words with this place. FIRST, I must give credit to the ladies working within the place. They were welcoming and very friendly and I appreciated their excellent customer service because that is a novelty that is rare, but noticeable in this day and age. The items I ordered were less than desirable, unfortunately. I ordered the canasta cake which I was thinking of my childhood when mom would stop by the Gottlieb's bakery (now defunct) where the rich, pecan infused chocolatey goodness of the stiff ganache that overlaid a pillow soft chocolate cake with the surprise of some delicious and decadent Bavarian cream filling made your eyes roll back into your head---that was the sensation I was hoping for, but we'll get to that later. Also, I added a cheese danish, and an apple turnover to my order. Sadly, none of items left a semblance of noteworthy praise. I should have known when I held the 8 pound bread baking pan size of canasta cake that it was already not the same as the petit fors size Gottlieb's cakes, but I held the faith that perhaps the taste would bring me back. It brought me somewhere far from my childhood and a little more closer to the toilet. In fact, the dry bitterness of the cheap chocolate used to make the canasta cake is one that still lingers on my tongue while the greasy pits of soft batter - like pastry dough is rotting in my bile ducts. I'm a bit baffled by the poor reviews for Rum Runners Bakery...I had a fantastic experience with them at my wedding! I originally booked a different well-known bakery in Savannah to make the cakes for our wedding; a few months before the wedding, my fiance and I went to taste their cakes. Not only were they horrible and so dry, but they didn't even know what lemon curd was. I have a hard time trusting a bakery that doesn't even know what it is. So, as a last resort my mom and I happened to stop by Rum Runners and speak with them. They were so helpful and completely understood my vision of having multiple rustic-inspired cakes. All the women that work in there are so organized and knowledgeable! We ended up ordering 3 12 inch cakes, and even had them custom make flavors for us, no problem! One was strawberry with a cream cheese buttercream frosting, a chocolate irish cream cake, and a vanilla cake with lemon curd filling and buttercream frosting. They coordinated the delivery and setup beautifully...so smoothly, in fact, that I didn't even know they came and went! Everything was beautiful, the cakes were perfect (they were so delicious and looked so homemade, our guests thought my grandma made them!) The strawberry cake is hands down my favorite cake in the whole world. We had cupcakes from the bakery and they were moist and delicious and had just the perfect amount of sweetness! I ended up getting a loaf of their rosemary sea salt focaccia bread and it was some of the best bread I've had. I also tried their vegan sandwich and I really enjoyed it. I am confused by the negative reviews I've read about Rum Runners. I walked into their bakery about four weeks prior to my wedding, in need of a wedding cake. I was sure I would be told to make an appointment, but to my surprise, Megan sat right down next to my husband and I and began to brainstorm with us. She brought out a plate of samples, and every flavor was moist and delicious! The buttercream icing is phenomenal. I showed her a picture if what I envisioned, and on my wedding day, the cake showed up and was absolutely perfect. It was just as I described, and oh was it delicious! The UPS store may not be able to make me a custom cake, but they don't look at me like i pissed in a mixing bowl when I ask for a strip of tape of the package that I am sending. Really, tape? My fiance' and I drove down from Atlanta to check out vendors for our future wedding and Savannah RR was recommended to us. Immediately on arrival we were a bit confused as it doubles as a post office. The owner's mom was nice enough to see us and allow us to taste samples of wedding cake flavors and icing (we did call first) and for that they get the 2 star review but unfortunately the samples were dry or stale not sure which one. This place was really confusing from the outside bc of all the referrals to the US Postal Service in the window displays. The reason for that is bc it's part bakery/part post office?!? Weird but made sense after I tried their baked goods bc they sure as heck couldn't survive on that alone. I can't imagine they get much repeat business. The service was mediocre at best and the place had no design, decor or ambiance at ALL. I bought three servings of desserts to take home. Hummingbird cake, Red Velvet cake and Mississippi Mud. The MIssissippi Mud was passable, the cakes were thrown out after one bite. The Red Velvet was incredibly dense and had no discernible flavor, the Hummingbird was dry and crumbly. The cafe & bakery moved to a new, larger location at 324 West Bolton Street. It's decorated cute, like a shabby chic bakery. It has seating for maybe 10 people? I hear they will have outdoor seating in a backyard garden this summer. My office orders lunch from here once a month and everyone has enjoyed their meals. Its a short drive from downtown off of Jefferson St. Free street parking. They have delicious soups (selection changes daily), and it's a good deal as a combo with a sandwich or salad. The grilled cheese (super cheesy and greasy like any all-American grilled sandwich should be) and roasted tomato soup is my favorite. Caesar salad with grilled chicken is standard- lots of chicken, diced and large, homemade croutons. The rum cakes, original and chocolate, are great! Moist and strong flavor. Unlike the other reviewers, I find it quaint, friendly and pretty wonderful to have a U.S. Post Office in my neighborhood bakery. I do all my postal business here and then often pick up cupcakes for the kids. I go to Rum Runners a few times a week and never found the employees/bakers/postal workers anything but friendly and warm. This is definitely a family bakery as opposed to the popular and high-priced cupcake boutiques. But my children love these cupcakes, which cost $1.50. We enjoy the cookies as well. I haven't purchased a cake here but have watched the bakers put together some cute kids' birthday cakes and a killer Gator bachelor party cake. read more

Then after a fabulous ceremony my mom forewarned me and she was right... The cake looked nothing like the picture I had provided. They have a lot of breakfast/lunch offerings however I picked out a lemon bar and a butterscotch bar out of the many little desserts/pastries that were available. They were both AMAZING! And as far as service goes...nicest young ladies ever. You can just tell they put their heart and souls into their food and business in general. I ordered a custom praline cake for a birthday from this bakery. I had a surprisingly difficult time finding a bakery that would make a praline cake in Savannah! The cake was unbelievably beautiful and delicious and the service was even better. I had to pick up the cake in the middle of a torrential downpour. Unfortunately, the welcome I received upon visiting Savannah RumRunners Bakery was lukewarm and indicative of other things to come. The server managed to say hello but her tone as well as the suspicious looks I received from the baking team was less than welcoming. I was offered the menu pinned to the wall, but the server seemed to change her reception when she realized I was actually interested in partaking of what I walked in for. She was knowledgeable of the products they offered. The food - french onion soup, the small amount served, was oily and tasteless. It was filled with onions and croutons which made the lack of flavor surprising. The chicken salad sandwich was tasty -- a hint of turmeric or tarragon, I think. The rum cakes were dry but I guess that was to complement the coffee you can order to go with the cakes -- coffee actually goes very well with the cakes. The cakes being made behind the counter were incredible, but the lack of warmth of bakers/owners at an establishment relying on customers as well as the less than tasty food has squashed any desire to return or to recommend this establishment. read more

I have eaten lunch, stopped in for sweets, and even ordered cake from Rum Runner's. The atmosphere is quiet and the new location is bright and inviting. I found the bakers busy and readily available for all my requests.One visit they even went to the back and gave me fresh desserts I saw in the window. I recently ordered a 6 inch cake for my mother's birthday. I have only heard about the delicious cakes from coworkers and clients, and was ready to try one for myself. Megan made the cake the next day, with buttercream icing and with white cake inside. The design was clean, simple and pretty and my mother really enjoyed the cake. It was fresh and delicious, even after waiting overnight to eat it. The four of us almost ate the whole thing in 24 hours!!! I will not be going back to Publix for birthday cake!
