Had an incredible dinner at Savona's. Came in around 8 p.m. on a Saturday, and it was not busy, so we sat at the bar. Service was great; Benjamin, the bartender, was nice, and the food came out pretty fast. We started with the burrata caprese and the hot honey pepperoni pizza. And for the main course, I had the zuppa pescatore, medium spicy; this was scrumptious. The pasta was cooked al dente, and the sauce was to die for! BF had the lamb specials and enjoyed it. We stopped in for lunch before exploring the Kingston area. Our server was attentive, but his recommendations were off. He proclaimed the salmon BLT to be one of the best items on the menu and it was dry and bland. Very disappointing. The chicken pear sandwich with fig jam and gorgonzola was also nearly flavorless. The chicken didn't seem to be seasoned and there was precious little gorgonzola. The featured bean soup was tasty. And the fries were good. Best part of the meal were the garlic breadsticks that were served to the table. They were fantastic. The cocktail I ordered also wasn't great. stopped in tonight and sat at the bar where there was 2 others sitting. I was ignored for 5 minutes and finally a woman bartender??? said very sorry but they had some large groups but at least she acknowledged me. 5 minutes later she apologizes again and asks if she can get me a drink. all good. then she took my food order...place got quiet and she spent a lot of time at end of the bar talking. meanwhile I had to request a napkin after my food was half eaten and never was asked if I would like another drink even though my glass was empty I was planning on another drink and dessert but at that point decided to cut my losses. Stopped for a Sunday lunch. The place wasn't too busy so they accommodated our party of 8. They have a good brunch menu that we ordered from and others in our party got the main menu. The cocktail was good, they had old fashioned premade in barrels for flavor that I didn't try. The food was definitely good Italian although some of us wanted more flavor to our food. Not far from the Roundout Creek, Savona's Trattoria is definitely not your mom & pop, quaint place down by the dockside. Although it looks cozy on the outside, not long after you come in, Savona's feels more modernish without having that old school, homey feel. In some ways, our visit on a Friday night, reminded me when my husband and I went to Monroe College's Culinary School+Rest't, The Dining Lab where students serve you. Oh wait... that service at that culinary school, was actually a lot better than here. We're not even sure if we came during high school night(no offense) because the majority of the floor people.... I mean kids, were uninterested. One busboy doubled as a waiter, was so out of touch with proper handling of knives, that I had to teach him how to properly hand over a knife to someone with the handle facing the patron. Our server Aisha(?) was MIA the majority of the time and it was upsetting. Our salad starters were fabulous- especially mine with grilled Bosch pears and fresh figs. My limoncello+basil+prosecco drink was a major loss and was basically lemon water. But, our main plates of shrimp scampi and hubs' chicken franchese, were each tasty with a sublime butter+ lemon sauce. We could drink the sauce just like that. Interesting night for sure. The original 'Volare' played (I only know because I heard the first few beats)- but with all the talking here and LOUD- it was just too much to bear. We're not sure if this happens every time- but we probably picked the loudest night because we couldn't hear ourselves talk. While Savona's isn't within earshot, the less than 25 minute drive to get to this side of Kingston, isn't bad at all. The last several times we've dined at restaurants nearby, Savona's seems to be buzzing. The atmosphere is certainly lively, Kudos to Savona's for offering fresh and delicious food- but someone needs to seriously help these waiters. We just came off the boat without reservations but they were able to accommodate our merry little group. To start, the breadsticks are amazing covered in a pesto type oil and our drinks were great. We tried the pineapple upside down martini and it was well balanced. We purposely didn't order appetizers because we wanted to have dessert! I got the spicy vodka chicken Parmesan and it was out of this world. It had thin layers of cherry peppers between the chicken and the sauce/cheese and it just set that vodka sauce above all sauces. Two large pieces of chicken (not too thin thank God) covered in yummy cherry peppers and yummy vodka sauce. LOVED IT SO MUCH!!!! The rigatoni was cooked perfectly al dente. This meal was such a pleasure to eat. Everyone loved their meals and they all looked delicious and beautifully presented. I tried some of the meatballs and they were great too. Really large and moist. We made it to dessert for the first time in a long time and hubby and I shared the chocolate lava cake. It was my bff's birthday so she chose the tiramisu. Came in early this Saturday and we're immediately seated. Staff were friendly and immediately greeted us. We ordered two glasses of wine which arrived promptly with a basket of bread. Once we ordered meals, the waiter kindly asked if my gf pizza was an allergy, to which I replied yes. Upon this new information, he immediately brought out some gluten free bread, which hardly ever happens! I ordered the fig & Gorgonzola pizza with no bacon and on a gluten free crust. My husband ordered Nona's Famous Sunday Sauce. Everything was delicious! We usually don't order dessert, however, everything was so great I needed to at least try a late and some gelato. We stopped by to have an impromptu lunch (early birthday). Five of us. We are locals and frequent this restaurant and its other locations (as well as hosting parties here). Hostess was not interested in seating us. She asked if we had a reservation and then told us the only table was reserved and if we are seated we will be asked to leave if the reservation shows (so eat quickly). The entrees were just okay. Large portions but a bit lacking in rich flavor and texture. The flour coating on the veal marsala was thick, so some parts of it were a bit chewy. We came here for Sunday brunch last month. I was going to get the pear pizza from the lunch menu. It's really good... However, I looked at the brunch menu and decided to get the Palermo breakfast. They poached the eggs perfectly and the hollandaise was on the side, as requested. The only thing, I would have preferred that the prosciutto was heated up a bit, even crisped up That's just a personal preference. The potatoes were fantastic. My husband ordered the broccoli rabe, sausage risotto. It was so good. It was creamy and seasoned perfectly. I could never order it because I would be filled up after three bites. Quality over quantity, always. But seems like this is far from the motto at Savonas. My husband and I were staying overnight, exploring this cute area, which gave us an appetite. I opened yelp and found this place; you had me at pasta. We waited an hr for stale bread, and my pasta dish coming out in error and then missing the ricotta cheese on the second try. Bolognese was ok at best. The only thing we did enjoy was the baked clams, but even that bread was hard and flavorless. Really cute place with a nice environment. Love Savonas, food is well prepared, authentic and delicious. Service is amazing and I LOVE that they box your leftovers in the kitchen. Since Covid, most restaurants hand you a box to box your own leftovers. I find it really annoying to box my leftovers and I'm so glad they have brought back full service dining in this way. Bravo! The only thing I would say that I don't like at Savonas is that they have 2 beautiful Filet Mignon steaks on the menu and they don't offer mashed potatoes with them. The premium steaks are served with French fries ( nooooo), in the past, a baked potato ( also nooooo). I really want mashed potatoes!! I also want mashed potatoes with my Chicken Marsala! Lovely spot near the river. I didn't have quarters for the parking and the bartender kindly gave me some. My limoncello martini was a bit too tart for me, but I will try something else the next time I visit. The mozzarella sticks were tasty. Somehow they tasted like a plain pizza, it was interesting because I was not expecting that. The meatballs were good but there was a flavor I couldn't place in the meat. The house made lasagna was delicious but I think the meat to pasta ratio was a little too pasta heavy for me. I am a tiramisu lover and I try it everywhere it's in the menu. This tiramisu had a very soggy bottom. The ladyfingers were soaked a little too long and the coffee was watered down a lot. I enjoyed the top portion but could not eat the bottom. Stopped in after our Polar Express train ride last night. I have to say I was pleasantly impressed. The restaurant has a great atmosphere, low lit but nice ambiance. We started with an old fashion special which was made to my liking. We ordered arancini bolognese as an app, they were a bit cold in the middle but overall the texture and taste were good. I chose the mussels and shrimp fra diavolo, it came with linguini pasta. Great flavor and the sauce at the bottom had a nice kick to it. My wife had the salmon and risotto, also a good meal according to her. We finished with an Italian coffee and a special xmas martini with a candy cane rim.
