I was passing by this salon when I was just starting out embracing my natural hair. I was following the curly girl method and my hair was just frizzy and soft. I walked in and this woman was standing there with natural kinky hair brushed and healthy down to her waist. I thought she is the woman to talk to! She intrriduced herself as Sydney, a hairdresser there and did a consultation. She told me that my hair needed more protein and recommended an aveda conditioning treatment After the first wash my curls were defined and shIny. I was sold on her. She knew all about product and curly hair and she clearly had personal experience. I just let my hair grow but I it got to a point where it was super uneven. I wanted a trim and I went back over to IZEK and Sydney was able to fIt me in. She gavE me the best baby trim. She left my length which is so important when you're growing curly hair out and she gave me this great shape so I have a lot of volume. It's really fun and cool looking I really like the ladies here. First things first, the lady that was doing my hair smelled like she had been drinking for the last few days nonstop. That probably should have been my cue to leave but since the reviews on yelp were so great, I decided to stay. I decided I was going to get my hair dyed along with a hair cut. She did a decent job dying my hair although the streaks I wanted did not show up, but when she finished doing my hair it was nothing but a disaster. I wanted an A-line bob with angled bangs. She gave me an uneven bob from the back and really short straight bangs. I did not notice how bad the hair was until the next morning which is when I rushed to find another salon that would fix her sloppy work before my birthday. Long story short, Maria, the hair stylist, is definitely not a person you want to cut your hair. PS..the owner was very apologetic and did try to correct the situation by offering to return some of the money. Like a girl that chops off all her hair and dyes it a crazy color to cope with a gnarly break up, I was ready for some change in my look-a look I was rockin' for the last two or so years. I wanted to do something a little different, so after settling on the OMBRE look, I did a search for people who could do it. Then I came across The Establishment, and more specifically, Eric Gutierrez. Um, sold. I booked a consultation with him ASAP. The consultation went easy breezy. He even gave me a price estimate and broke down each line item. My long, violet/red hair (that was haphazardly cut at a different salon...SIGH) was going to be changed to a darker, ombre color with some weight taken off from my shorter layers. Fast forward a few days later and it was my big day! Eric was super friendly, conversational and discussed every step of the process to me so that I felt involved and didn't feel like I was in the dark. He understood that I wanted a noticeable change, but not a crazy one (if that makes sense). And when it came to fixing my haircut, he did an amazing job while knowing how attached I am to having long hair. I've never left a salon so happy and excited about my hair. This was my first time coming here to get my hair done as I am fairly new to the Lakeshore area. Originally I had plans on getting my hair done at a particular place in the city, but for some reason the place was out of business and I was in serious need of a perm with no where to go! Using Yelp! as my guide I decided this would be a good time to find a shop that was located closer to home rather than the city and Izek had plenty of good reviews and allowed walk-ins. I was able to get an appointment with Saeed at 3pm and was out by 5, which is really good timing compared to what I was use to back at home. Saeed was very nice and gentle - not too rough, no burning scalp from the perm or hot iron, and the wash was good too. My hair feels so nice and clean! I greatly appreciate that the receptionist and Saeed were able to schedule me in last minute. Normally I like to schedule ahead of time, but today was different due to changing of plans. It's a bit pricey in terms of the cost especially since I am a student (an art student no less), but other than that it was a great experience and hopefully I can set aside some funds for my next perm in 6 or so weeks time :) read more

This is the worst haircut I have ever received. I asked for my hair to be layered and for some of the weight to be taken out of the top. The stylist literally took what looked like pinking shears clipped my hair and pulled down on it...and clumps of my hair came out. She destroyed the weight line of my hair. These are pictures of what my hair looked like the day after the cut...ragged and so thin on the bottom (but not the top) that I had to go to another salon to have this fixed so my headshots weren't ruined. The stylist looked at my hair and said, "You must not have had a haircut for quite awhile." I said, "Actually I had a cut yesterday." She was horrified and couldn't figure out what the stylist had done. Don't go to this salon unless you want your hair ruined. By the time this disaster was fixed I'd lost over 8 inches of hair I'd spent years growing and taking care of. read more

What a weird, off putting experience I had at this place. First of all, I had a 3pm with Eric. When I came in, he was out front with the receptionist, and when I said I was here for my 3pm with Eric, he turned to the receptionist and said, "SORRY GIRL!" and rolled his eyes. Umm, talk about unprofessional? I'm sorry but I didn't feel bad that the receptionist couldn't get her hair cut during my appt time. Eric was just rude and made the whole experience really uncomfortable for me. He talked in this really harsh way that was just really unprofessional. Questions were spit out at me like, "WHERE YOU FROM" and the likes. I just felt uncomfortable and honestly I was getting angrier and angrier but didn't want to say anything about it in fear that he would ruin my hair. The only time that Eric was somewhat more affable was when I bought some Aveda product at the end. And when I told him I did like the cut. Talk about insecure. I actually did like my hair cut, and the $ was really cheap, but honestly I'd rather pay more to get good service and being treated in a decent way, with a mature and professional staff. Do yourself a favor and stay away. Had the worst hair experience of my life with TINA. Got my hair done by her (and paid over $600 for it), and she screwed it up. I went back to get it fixed and she charged me $200 to fix her own mistake. Seems like I'm not the only one who has had a bad experience here. Let me see, where to start...this may sound like a broken record, but I had an appointment scheduled for 9a, and guess what? My stylist was almost 15 minutes late. When I arrived, the receptionist, whose customer service skill I can only liken to drinking poison, did not ask me what my name was, who I was here to see---seems she was expecting the stylist to be late, and I just had to "deal with it." When the stylist did arrive, she was nice and came up to me to say hello and introduce herself--rather than the receptionist doing this, so the stylist gets ONE STAR for being respectful. However, I can tell you that this is the LONGEST I have spent in a hair salon to receive a service that should take no more than 2-3 hours. I was there to get extensions taken out and a light relaxer put in, shampoo/blow dry/style. The only lengthy part, the extension removal, should have taken about an 1 to 1.5 hours...HOWEVER, the stylist told me that she "works slow to do good work" and proceeded to unbraid my hair and clip out my extensions at the pace of a drunk turtle! Every flick of the wrist, every turn of the hand, every finger motion seems like they were keeping pace with someone lost at sea--drifting along with no sense of time or reason...She yammers on about zodiac signs (though I told her I don't believe in astrology), and when she asks what my birthday month is, she says, "A-HA, you're a Cancer...my husband is a Cancer, you guys are a special kind of crazy...not the bad crazy, but the good crazy." I told her I'm not lumped in that category and hope her Aquarius moon and good crazy husband are blessed...after I said that, she sensed I "went to church" and backed off that wacky space crap...she obviously exists on another mental plane that I don't aspire to get to...EVER...I just wanted my damn hair done! When she is FINALLY done with taking everything down and unbraiding my hair, I show her the type of relaxer I want her to use---which the application is pretty universal, but she spends several minutes reading about the product. One of her colleagues, who had done about 2 people between 9a-11a, knew about the product I had, and that should have been enough...but oh no! Not for Susie "Aquarius" Turtle! Anywhoo, sometime between 12p-1p, she has slowly, slowly, slowly, applied a relaxer to my hair...slowly, slowly, slowly, took me to the shampoo/condition....slowly, slowly, slowly, led me upstairs to sit under the dryer....and then slowly, slowly, slowly--all the while cooing her version of customer conversation---the moon, signs, finding a good church, dog breeds, Obama, and parking meters------SLOWLY, my hair is blow dried out, and the best part for me was to see the long, healthy hair I'd grown over the past 3 months...that was the BEST PART of my visit! I had wanted to get new extensions put in...yet when she was up to the blow dry, it was already 1p. I asked her how much longer it would take to get my hair rebraided and some extensions put in--she told me it would take about 5 hours..."I work slow but do good work" is what she told me...I looked at her like she was high! Ain't no dang way I'm going to sit here all day like I'm at work, frustrated, and letting you do the two step in my hair for another 5 hours....NO! After she flat irons my hair...slowly, slowly, slowly...I get this Claire Huxtable in the 9th grade hairdo that I ask her to make a bit more....oh let me see---contemporary, current, something at the top...she tried, but, I just said, "oh hmmm, thanks so much." I was DONE at 230p. Don't get me wrong, she was a nice person, but slow and wacky as all heck! How do you tell a customer they are "good crazy like my husband" and expect a tip? When I went to the front counter to pay, she wanted to book a followup appointment for the following Saturday for the extensions between 9a-3p...I told her that shouldn't take her that long to do, and what did she say in return---wait for it--- "I work slow but do good work..." LOL The receptionist gave me a "are you sure you want her" look, and then tried to cover by saying, "Oh, we set time aside for lunch." What the heck am I signing up for, a shift on an assembly line? Ri-DAMN-diculous! Big shocker--I never came back! A few weeks after this appointment---THANKFULLY, I found a new stylist and new shop I love, who arrives on time, who works fast, and the entire shop is customer friendly. Woo-Hoo! ONE STAR--because the stylist knew my name and introduced herself, but whose work and the overall atmosphere at the salon was like "I don't care, give me a Zanax, I don't want to be here." I have natural hair and told her that I just wanted it shaped. She parted my hair and scissor cut my hair, with the end result looking as if someone took a weed whacker to my head. She talked a good game while doing it...but when I looked in the mirror and almost started to cry while complaining, she gave me a very unsympathetic apology. She gave her ticket to the receptionist, and gave me a "discount" on my hair cut. Starting price for hair cuts per the website $30 Charged $50 (which is some bullshit) Discount -$15 Total charged $35 for having hair that I could pull back in a ponytail , cut down to a fade (which was fixed by someone else) On a more positive note: when I left a message for the owner, she called me back and offered a full refund and a very sincere apology. When I came in to get my money back I showed her the before and after pictures of my hair and she seemed to really feel sorry. I tried to make an appointment to get my hair done at this place and it was a total frustration. I thought I had the day and time correct, I showed up only to find the place locked up. When I got home there was a message on my home phone saying she was leaving for the evening because she wasn't sure we were still on. I thought it was a cop-out and she just didn't want to wait around for my evening appointment. I gave this place 4 stars because it completely redeemed itself when I scheduled a manicure/pedicure there instead. This review is for Eric, the hair magician. I went in on a whim, because I can never get it together to actually schedule a hair appointment ahead of time. My hair is always a mess (crispy, crunchy, frizzy, you name it) and I can never seem to find a stylist I like enough to go to more than once. Eric worked some major magic. He took my nonsensical babble about what I wanted and gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had. He is also a master with a blow dryer. Seriously, my hair has never looked so good. I'm just sad I can't afford to hire him to style my hair daily. People seem to have a lot of complaints about the staff at this salon not being friendly. I liked them. Since I have relatives who do hair, I was able to tell Saeed what I wanted, he understood it, and made it happen. After moving to the East Bay about 9 months ago, I had struggled to find a decent place for a Mani/Pedi. I really was not having much luck. I don't like the cheap places, and after going to Tip Toes in San Francisco for YEARS, I was a bit spoiled. I happend to walk by IZEK last night. I like Aveeda products, and that caught my eye, then I noticed they also offered nail service. SO SO happy with my mani/pedi! Le was gentle and meticulous, but really thorough. It had been a while since my last pedi, but she got my heels soft and smooth. She does both the mani/pedi, so it takes more time than service at the clip/scrape/paint/pay places, but oh so worth it. This review is for the "Nails by Wendy" part of the "Spa Izek (formerly known as We are hair)" salon. I went here as a "walk-in" on Saturday the 19th. It was my birthday and I wanted to treat myself to a pedicure. Wendy took me right away (she was fully booked, but one of her clients had just flaked on her) and she was so sweet!! She is a gentle, lovely little Asian lady and was so friendly. She also gave me an AMAZING leg and arm massage. My feet looked gorgeous after wards and I was totally relaxed. I have decided to make this my "go to" nail salon and have an appointment this coming Saturday for a full set. EDIT: Went back here for my full set. I'm taking back the thing I said about my go to place. They looked horrible. I had to go home and refile, buff and paint them. I told her they weren't fab (I don't keep my mouth shut very often) but she was all rushed and flustered so I don't think she cared a great deal. Oh well. Back to Tranquility nails. read more

I just happened upon Izek as I am new to the Lakeshore neighborhood, and am a big fan of Aveda products. I have extreeemely thick Latina hair and am often nervous when trying a new hairdresser -- which is why I hadn't had my hair cut in about a year and a half! I was seen by Myra, who was extremely nice, appropriately conversational and did a fabulous and very thorough job. I paid what I am used to paying for a shampoo, cut and round-brush blowdry, and it took her just under two hours, which, considering the fact that she needed to totally reshape my hair since it's been so long, was just about how long I expected it to take for a mane like mine. I will most definitely be back to see Myra at Izek, and would recommend her highly to anyone with the basic understanding that faster does not necessarily mean better, which I believe is most people. read more

I am sorry to hear about the experiences from others because I've been treated like a star from the beginning. I go and they are on time, unlike other salons which I had given up on long ago. They are always friendly and helpful and I can usually get a last minute appointment or switch with no problem when I'm the one running behind. The masseuse is outstanding, every time my aching body get touched by her I'm in heaven afterwards. I have very long locs and my guy who has locs himself takes special care of me even though they are a pain in the ass to work with. The haircare products smell and work divinely and I leave feeling like I was the only customer there. It's close by and centrally located, I'll always return. It's a bit on the expensive side but you get what you pay for and I've always been happy. My hubby even remembered who they were (and men can't remember anything) and got me and my sister gift certificates for our birthday there and I'm headed there today for my much needed massage after a brutal week with my personal trainer. LOVE this place! The morning of my engagement party I had an appointment at the salon across the street for a non-lye relaxer, color and cut. I showed up at 9am for my appointment only to find that I had been stood up! The place was dark and closed and after waiting around for an hour and leaving 3 messages, I gave up and walked across the street to Izek's to ask if they could SOMETHING, ANYTHING to make my hair look presentable for the party that afternoon. The receptionists at Izek's were super sweet and sympathetic and introduced me to Try. Try asked all the right questions and although she didnt' have the relaxer product that I needed at the moment, we came up with a plan to at least make my hair look fabulous for the party. Try applied a gorgeous shade of dark brown semi permanent color to my multicolored locks and hydrated them to luscious juicy perfection. She styled my hair curly and bouncy for the day and everyone at the salon made me feel absolutely beautiful and ready for the big party. A few days later I came back for my ISO Mane Tamer relaxer and haircut with Try and I was impressed yet again! Try is a hair genius! Now my hair project is complete and I'm so happy to have found a talented new stylist and amazing new salon. I'll definitely be back and have already referred a bunch of friends to Izek's. read more

Came to IZEK salon for the very first time and had a very pleasant experience with stylist named Samira. I could tell from the start that Samira is one of those hair stylists who gets to know her customers and actually takes the time to ask what look YOU prefer. She took the time to listen to what my longer term vision was regarding the look I wanted. I wasn't too familiar with parking in the area so I parked in a spot that would have landed me a ticket. I appreciated that Samira asked me where I parked and advised me on where to park safely while waiting patiently for me to return in a few minutes - nice touch! I asked about highlights and she was very honest in telling me that a partial highlight would be enough instead of trying to gouge me; needless to say, I appreciate the honesty! The salon is very clean, nicely decorated and provides a nice ambiance. Left very pleased with the cut/style and overall experience. I'm not familiar with the other services offered at this salon but for a cut/style, I would definitely recommend IZEK and specifically, Samira. read more

I've only been here for hair coloring and it was done terribly! I asked for a brunette balayage and the outcome turned out to be nothing close to what I asked for. My hair was a blank canvas so it should've been easy. It was terribly blended (verryyy uneven), my hair became brassy and very orange even after it was toned, and my hair was extremely damage after this. I had to go somewhere else to get it fixed. i feel a little bad posting this review, but i think its something that should be shared with new and potential customers... mostly because i wish i had heard it before i went in. its a little in depth because i care a lot about hair experiences, so if you want just the dirt you can skip to the bottom. :) izek is local, and an aveda salon, so i was excited to try it out when in need of good hair for a special occasion. they fit me in on short notice, and the stylist (saeed, per another yelper's spelling) was super nice and seemed to understand what i was after. i have long hair, about to mid-back; i didn't need a cut, just a blow out - specifically, a round brush blow out with big waves done by a large barrel curling iron. in layman terms: wash, blow dry, big curling iron, hairspray, and done. i did also ask to do a special aveda moisturizing treatment during wash. when i booked the appointment, i was quoted $35 for the blow out (woo! hell yeah!) and $20 for the treatment (i have paid $15 for elsewhere, but that's fine). saeed said that the extra step of curling would cost more, and while i was surprised, i said that would be ok. i didnt ask how much more, and he didnt say. my bad #1. the wash and aveda treatment were great. saeed took his time and didn't rush, which was ok because i had plenty of time and had brought a book. he did a typical aveda (ie, awesome) head massage during shampoo, and put me under the dryer a few times for the treatment. the blowout was decent, but not amazing. i felt like the sectioning was a little lazy, but it was generally effective, and i was doing a curl after, so i didnt (and dont) think it truly mattered. when it came to the waves, i was surprised that the biggest curling iron he had was only 1". he used a nonstandard iron, which was fine, and set every small curl in pin curls while he was working on the rest of my head. this part was extremely slow going, and wasnt what i asked him to do. i was a little surprised, but i figured - hey, i have time, so whatever works. it ended up being 2.5 hours (!!!) from entry to exit. i havent ever spent so long in a salon chair in my entire life. when i left the salon, saeed accompanied me up front and told the receptionist that i owed $95. if you go back to my original math, that's: $95 - $20 (treatment) - $35 (original blow out fee) = $40 "extra" a 110% markup a for curling my hair after a blowout? are you kidding? i was shocked but basically decided to let it go; he did spend a lot of time and i was feeling generous and wanted to go party, so F it. i tip 20%, and am on my way. --- its two weeks later, and i had a sadly similar experience, and that's why i am posting this review. i booked another appointment with saeed for a round-brush blowout (thats it), and went in this morning. i confirmed that morning on the phone that the price was $35. the blowout was the same, and so was the shady treatment at the register when it was done. before the receptionist could tell me my total ($35, as i confirmed that morning) saeed told me that it was $45. the receptionist looked at him, confused, and pointed at the monitor. i said "$45?" and he said yes. i told him that i had actually been quoted $35 that morning, and he replied that, "well, yes, but thats for, like, a chin-length bob. you have longer hair." the receptionist said nothing, but looked incredibly uncomfortable and then stared at the floor. and no wonder. are you f---ing kidding me? my hair is mid-back. and even so, i had been seen once before, and if i was going to be subjected to a "surcharge" then it should have been mentioned before the appointment was started! there was no offer to make an exception and let me pay what was agreed upon when i booked the appointment, even as a one-time thing. he just made up a new price, and i had to pay it. i was floored, so i did the only thing i could think of: 1. pay what he said i owed, even though the situation was, frankly, bullshit. 2. go home and be pissed that someone fucked me over at the register TWICE. 3. decide to post on yelp in the hopes that no one else encounters this treatment. im bummed because i was hoping to be a super-regular client with a couple of blow outs per month, and honestly, had i been told $45 from the beginning, i would have been fine with it. its still a fair price, and aveda products and proximity to by home would make it worthwhile. but! shady business practices once: shame on you. shady business practices twice? shame on ME. i didnt even stiff him on the tip, which i probably should have but just goes against my nature. all i can do now is withhold my business, and warn other people to CONFIRM THE PRICE both on the phone and as soon as you sit down in the chair. feeling like someone is try to get over on you is a really shitty feeling, especially when all you were hoping to have was awesome hair.. but instead leave with a bad taste about the whole thing. :( read more

My wife went here for hair styling on our wedding day, and even though they knew it was for a wedding that afternoon, they were super late. They straightened her curly hair, then curled it... Sounds unnecessary, doesn't it? Some of the curls didn't even last a couple hours. We really expected a higher quality hair-do for the price and the long wait. If someone takes a long time with their customer, you would think it was because they were doing a high quality job. Think again. If you need hair styling for an important event, try somewhere else or at the very least call ahead to make sure they know to be ready for you. Nice people, but seriously, nice only goes so far. You couldn't pay me to get my haircut here again! The only reason why I gave them 1 star is because you can't give zero stars. In fact, I had to wait a week just to write this review because my experience was so upsetting. Where do I start. The receptionist was rude, she didn't even listen to my request to have a woman stylist and was completely annoyed when I asked. The guy who cut my hair made me look like a mix between Jim Carey's in Dumb and Dumber & Children of the corn. I told him to trim my bangs to my eyebrows not an inch above my eyebrows. What's even worse is my bangs were flying away and I looked absolutely ridiculously. He flat-ironed them three times and they still wouldn't lie flat, then he said because they were so short there was not enough weight to make them lie flat. Guess what? Maybe you should have thought about that when you were cutting them! When I tried to push them down he sprayed tons of hairspray on my bangs and walked away making my hair sticky and me look like a wet dog. Then, he had the nerve to tell me my hair looked great and that no one would notice expect me! Hello, who the hell is the one who has to look in the mirror every morning? This set me back $50. I was almost in tears. Luckily, I sucked it home until I got home. The lady at the front desk could tell I wasn't happy and told me they would grow back. Yeah, in like 3 weeks! They gave me half my money back, but I still left with a bad haircut! $23 doesn't make up for what he did to my hair. He didn't even trim my ends evenly! Supposedly, he has cut hair for 15 years. Okay, I bet. Honestly, half the five-years walking around in Oakland are sporting better bangs than me. Please don't go here. You'll regret it. read more

I was on vacation but was seriously in need of a drastic transformation from the drab Santa fe cut and highlights and Eric changed my life. Though I haven't gotten a service here, this is where I purchase my Aveda curly hair products. They sell a wide range of Aveda products, and the owner is very knowledgeable about product benefits and differences. It's important to me to support independent neighborhood businesses, and it's a major plus when the owner/staff are kind and helpful like at Izek Spa Salon. The salon is centrally located, and very clean, light, and airy inside. read more

I cannot rave enough about the awesome service I received from Janine who does waxing at this salon. This was literally one of the top five experiences in my life so far for cosmetologists who have performed this service for me. Janine was fast, professional, knowledgeable and just good at her job. Also this is the BEST price out of ANY place on Lakeshore and Grand - believe me I have been polling. I will never go anywhere else. PS - full face = completely painless. I swear. read more

Not sure about any of the other stylists here, but Saed is the best. I've thought about going to hang out with him, even if I'm not needing a haircut. He's always really nice, super patient, and gives great haircuts. He's the first stylist I've had in a long time who actually listens to me and cuts my hair both how I want it but with professional feedback so it looks good. read more

I went to Izek Day Spa and Salon to get my hair done. My stylist is Alicia McCauley she is great. I have been getting hair my hair done by her for about 2 years now and I would follow her to ends of the earth. Anyway the decor of the salon is stylish and inviting. The reception area has a place where you can have coffee and tea. There are six style stations, two shampoo bowls and six hooded dryers. They also do massage and waxing I have had my eyebrows waxed before but that was just okay. I would do it again but only in a pinch. They offer a full service nail salon also Nails by Wendy I have not personally had her services. My grandma loves Wendy she says she gives the best hand massages. I give this salon 4 stars because I haven't tried all the services yet. I highly recommend Alicia she is a great stylist. read more

I just went here and asked for an auburn brown (had a picture, he totally ignored) and left with a tricolored bright red. RED. Fake like old ladies get! Like he wasn't even listening to me. It was terrible. I also paid 110 dollars and wasted the day and my hair. I really want my money back and now I'm trying to dye it out. What a mistake. read more
