Modest exterior but delights wait inside

Were it not for Yelp reviews, we would have whizzed right by Sawtooth Roadhouse yesterday on our trip to Hood River. Just as we had whizzed by it many times before. But after doing Yelp homework in advance of this trip, this time we planned to stop in for lunch at Sawtooth. Now we know what we've been missing all those times before! This is a great little place. A perfect location for a casual lunch or dinner during or after visits to Fruit Loop farms or local wineries. WHY WE'RE FANS: Pride of ownership shines here, from the sparkling clean interior (even in the loo), to the cool outdoor seating but especially in the warm welcome, super friendly and efficient service and the great food. It's important to set your expectations though. This is a Roadhouse with a working sawmill across the parking lot (see photo). The infrastructure is old, but in great repair and fully accessible from paved parking lot (woohoo), through level in entries at bar and dining room, and loo too. MENU / FOOD/ LIBATIONS: As one would expect in a Roadhouse, the menu is casual. While not the case in all Roadhouse establishments, the food here is really delicious and everything is scratch made. We were hoping they'd have the Thai Peanut soup we'd heard about on the daily specials menu. Not available on our visit, so we shared a really good Hitchhiker Pizza. Tender, thin crust, topped with artichoke hearts, big sweet cloves of roasted garlic, fresh spinach, kalamata olives, sun-dried tomatoes and cheese. We recommend it! (Next time we might ask the chef to cook the crust a little crispier for us, but that's simply personal preference.) At $12 for a small pizza that easily fed two for lunch, this was a bargain. There were lots of other good options on the menu to choose from that included soup, salad, sandwiches, a plethora of pizzas and pasta (including lasagna and mac n cheese) in options for omnivores and vegetarians. (And here's a tip - save room for the desserts because we hear they are delectable.) As one would also expect in a Roadhouse, there is a full service bar. A nice surprise here is that the short list of wines by glass and bottle were mostly local wineries and inexpensive too (roughly $7 and $24 respectively). Long beer list. SEATING OPTIONS offered in three areas: the bar / lounge for those 21 and older, an all ages dining room called "family dining" as I recall on the entrance, and outdoors both under a canopy on a deck and on a sunny lawn. For Roadhouse ambiance, we'd recommend the bar. But the family dining area was pretty cute too with wall art that fits the area including antique skis, saw blades, and sleds. If you're looking for a quieter experience, the family dining room or outdoor dining areas will be the ticket. This is an "all people are welcome here", kind of place. LIVE MUSIC with no cover on some nights. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: Just off Highway 35, on the east side of Highway, roughly between Draper Girls Farm (to the south) and the turnoff to Rasmussen Farms (to the north). Only about 10 miles from downton Hood River (north) and about 6 miles from downtown Parkdale (south). It's a little hard to see the white building as you drive up or down Hiway 35, but you can't miss the big red lettered RESTAURANT. If all else fails, look for the sawmill and you'll see Sawtooth Roadhouse across the lot.

The nachos were amazing! Nice little joint we visited while visiting Mr Hood in Oregon.

My husband and I went here on a whim while doing the "fruit loop" drive in Hood River and Parkdale.

Great service, great drinks, and the best pizza I've had in decades!…read more The beers Backwoods makes are all delicious and smooth-drinking. The service staff was all exceptional. But the pizza! Off the charts!, FULL REVIEW of all Services: If anyone who enjoys hiking, river fishing, or just a general outdoor-focused vacation wants a good, simple getaway with their spouse/loved one, check out the Backwoods brand in Carson, Washington (just north-northeast of Bridge of the Gods/Cascades Locks). Backwoods Cabins offers a really great overnight stay option. The 8 cabins there are all basic "two-room" designs (bedroom and attached bathroom, and a living room / mini-kitchen room). The cabins sport king-sized beds, a gas fireplace and outdoor fire, a mini kitchen with refrigerator/freezer and microwave (no stove/range). I think 3 of the 8 cabins welcome dogs. The Backwoods brand also owns Backwoods Brewery, which is just across the road from the cabin property. They have great microbrew beers (from light lagers to GREAT stouts!). The brewery also has a smokehouse, with fantastic smoked brisket, pulled pork, and house-made sausage/brats. But even better, the Backwoods Brewery offers the BEST PIZZA I've had in decades. The pizza dough is a perfect balance of flavor and texture. It's not too thin and not too thick. The crust is chewy in the middle, with a great crusty edge and base. The red sauce (they also have a white sauce we didn't try) is thick and rich, with a few tomato chunks. It's got a slight spicy bite with a sweet finish. They also have some unique house pizzas. We tried the Whistle Punk - Red sauce, bacon, smoked brisket, peppadew peppers, sweet onions, fresh mozzarella rounds - and the Pepperoni Express - Red sauce, pepperoni, mushrooms, tomatoes, banana peppers, smoked mozzarella. Both were outstanding. I'd go so far as to say both Donna and I deemed these the best pizzas we've had in 35+ years (noting that our first date was at a pizza joint in Fife we both thought was the best-ever pizza). If you stay in the Backwoods Cabins, you get two coupons for free drinks at the brewery (beer/wine/cider/cocktails) as well as an assortment of snacks for your hiking adventures, and a full S'mores kit to use over the gas fire pit. And if you are in a dog-friendly cabin, you get complimentary treats, and water/food bowls for your canines.

Gluten free review:…read more Came here after a hike because I believe in balance, climb a hill, eat a pizza. Thrilled they had gluten-free options. Tried the Tree Hugger 10" GF pizza and it was genuinely tasty. The crust? So good. The staff? Kind. The price? About $20, which felt a little "ouch," but the pizza did not, and that's what matters. The place was fun and great ambiance. Take a fun trip and go try this place out.
