    Salmon chowder
    Stephen W.

We stopped here for lunch after visiting Bonneville dam and fish hatchery. The town of Cacade Locks is very small with maybe a dozen or so shops and restaurants, but this is probably one of the best. There is free parking in the back for customers. I started with salmon chowder and it was very good. It was white cream based and similar to New England clam chowder except for the salmon instead of clams. I thought it would be more smoky but it was fine the it was. I then had the smoked salmon po' boy and it was a generous portion of shredded salmon on a roll with lettuce and tomato. It was a very good po' boy although the bread was different than they use in New Orleans po' boys. The wife had smoked salmon salad and liked it. Fresh greens and healthy portion of salmon. The kid had cheese quesadilla and fries. The fries were crunchy and crispy. The restaurant should stick to fish and not venture into Mexican because the kid did not like the quesadilla and I tried a bite and it was not very good compared to what we get in Dallas. The restaurant is small but had a good vibe. The employees were all very friendly and helpful. They appeared to like their jobs. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. The service was good and we did not wait too long for our food. Overall, a very good experience and tasty food!

My son and I saw the reviews online about the Fish Market, which did not disappoint. It was right next to our hotel. The whole town of Cascade Locks is very walkable. Mon and I had their clam chowder and fried pickles for an appetizer. The clam chowder was the best I had while visiting the PNW. My entree was the Alaskan halibut and chips; my son had the Shrimp Po Boy. Both were very good. I overlooked that they had locally sourced sturgeon & chips that I would have loved to try. There is low-top and outdoor seating. A cooler in the dining area provides free water with refills. The prices are higher, but on par with the area. Very friendly staff provided prompt service. Craft beer, wine, cider, soda, and lemonade are available. Fresh fish is for sale, so remember your cooler.

This place is our favorite place to stop on the way back from Mt Hood or the gorge! The halibut and chips are a favorite, but honestly everything is good. Salmon collars are a great snack to bring back as well. It's counter order and then they bring the food to you. Generally pretty fast. Casual spot with a nice patio overlooking the river.

    Halibut po boy

I'm incredibly picky about my fish and chips, and I didn't want to take any chances with being disappointed. So I ordered the halibut po'boy. And oh my gosh. The fish was incredible. The fries were plain. Almost offensively plain-- I wished they had beer battered. But the fish was so good, it didn't really matter. The bread was pretty bomb too. When the cashier described the po'boy as "So much bread, there's no way you could eat it all in one sitting," I knew immediately that I'd likely be doing just that. Well, it was decently sized, but I had no problem finishing the whole thing. It was roughly the size of two Filet o fish sandwiches from the golden Arches. The coleslaw and tartar sauce were both good. Standard. Nothing special. The ketchup tasted like it had mango or peach in it, which was good, but unexpected. I tried topping the fish with red vinegar and with tartar sauce, and both were good, but I liked it best plain, which, I'm actually not sure if that's ever happened to me before in my whole life. Maybe I was just really craving fish. It was so good. I would say $24 for a sandwich is pricey, but considering the current sandwich market, this actually felt like a steal. I mean, it was bomb halibut. The view was beautiful. You can see the river and the mountains from the back patio. Although you are stuck right between the road and the train, that's how the whole town is. Service was phenomenal. The girl at the counter helped me out explaining all the different menu options, and the server brought my food out promptly. I noticed that the people behind me were offered the option to have their halibut breaded Cajun or regular. I think I definitely would have preferred Cajun, but didn't know that was an option. Oh well. Next time. I was thinking this would be a great place to come with a date. But with or without a date, I would definitely want to eat here again.

I wasn't planning on writing a review since we'll probably not return to this area, but after the first few bites, I just had to. This was the best fish and chips I've ever had ever. The halibut was tender inside and had a nice light crunch in the outside. The potato wedges were crispy and piping hot. The coleslaw was good too! We ordered at the counter and helped by a friendly cashier and server. Food came out quickly and was hot which is very important to me. The place had a few tables inside a many tables outside.

Great meal! The huckleberry lemonade was a delicious accompaniment to the fish n chips.

Some of the best fish and chips I have ever had. Great crisp on the fried fish without the greasiness that can often accompany fish and chips. The fish tastes delicious and the seasoning is not overly heavy. The chowder is tasty as well but can be hit or miss on the amount of fish. The last time that I went there was hardly any salmon but other times there is more.

Really enjoyed the grilled Halibut. It had a light butter sauce and moist fish. Very well done in preparation! Friendly service. The smoked salmon was moist and the smoked labor popped.

The seating room is cozy, and I loved the antique typewriters and little wine games on the tables. I was hoping there might be a view of the river given the building location, but apparently the balconies/roof are owned by a hotel in the same building. That said, this was a very cute and cozy spot to sit and taste. The woman pouring was very friendly and she knew a lot about the wines. The pours were pretty light but it's hard to complain when you're paying $15. None of the wines stood out to me, but I liked the Cab Franc best. Both red wines were served colder than I expected, which I didn't mind but I know some people really do. This honestly would have gotten five stars, but there were fruit flies everywhere! They were swarming us the whole time, and several got into our wine :( I think this is largely unavoidable because the entire front wall is open to air, but it did mean we were having to swat flies the whole time we were there.

Every single wine in the flight was good, which is rare. My absolute favorite was the Mourvèdre, a serious red with dark fruit and notes of spice. Complex, yet easily drinkable. Their Mourvèdre blend was also a standout. Upside down Wine is located right on Oak, the main street in Hood River and located right next to the clothing store, Parts and Labour. The name is very subtle over the door so if you aren't intending to go here, you most likely will walk right by. Don't! The very stark, modern interior, which feels a bit sterile, comes alive with warmth from the friendly service and the chatter and laughter of other patrons. You can stand along the long bar, European style, or sit at a high top for two or in comfy chairs in the back. Now that I've had the opportunity to visit the wineries in Hood River and the Gorge multiple times, previous faves no longer hold a candle to some of my new favorites. Could be that my palette has become more refined, who knows? I just know that my top 5 list contains none of my original choices and Upside Down wine is now in the list!

There was plenty of parking, though the road up is very steep, so make sure your E-brake is working! There are two outdoor seating areas, one just outside the main entrance, and one overlooking the river. The area overlooking the river is not open to people just tasting, but it looked like the perfect place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. The interior tasting room (where we sat) is luxurious while still being comfortable. The ambiance of the entire place is lovely, and there is beautiful art and charming knick-knacks everywhere. I was pleased to see all of the pride flags-- it's cool to know you're drinking in a safe place. The woman pouring also let us know that the winery has a literary/witchy theme, which I thought was fun and an excellent conversation-starter. The wine was good. I like German varietals, and this place clearly knows how to do them well! The Gruner was my favorite, and we ended up getting an extra taste of the early harvest to compare to the mid-season, which was lovely. We also got an extra pour of some bubbles because someone else had ordered a glass. The woman pouring was incredibly friendly, very knowledgeable, and even had the winemaker herself come and chat with us for a moment. Tastings were $25 for a decent pour of 5 wines (though we ended up tasting 7) and they come with a little cheese/olive plate to boot! I was very impressed by the experience offered here. It seems this winery also does a number of events, which I am looking forward to attending. This was an amazing find, and I highly recommend you drive the extra 15 minutes out of Hood River/White Salmon if you are visiting to taste.
