Wow. Score. I've lived in this area for years now and didn't even know this hole-in-the-wall Thai place existed until I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago. I was looking for parking to go to a different Thai place nearby, but the streets were packed. I took a side street that I don't normally take and immediately saw the sign for Sawaddee Thai. This place is not much larger than my living room. There's a bar in the middle of the room that sits about 10-12 people and a couple wobbly tables scattered about. We were immediately greeted by this little old Thai woman who spoke with the cutest accent. She offered us a table in the only tucked away corner in the restaurant. I knew what I wanted to order immediately. I have a thing for massaman curry. It's so creamy, spicy and warming (coconut milk, thai spice, potatoes, avocado, chicken and cashews) - I order it at every Thai restaurant that I visit. My hubs ordered the basil fried rice and he asked for it spicy. As you know, this is sometimes a dangerous thing to do in a Thai food restaurant because they do not mess around with their spice. As we waited for the food, we noticed that some of the other patrons had brought in their own beverages. I love to BYOB because sometimes restaurants do not have the alcohol selection that I want. The smells coming from the kitchen were intoxicating... I can tell this food is going to knock my freaking socks off. I was not disappointed. In fact, it was one of THEE BEST dinners I've had in ages. The massaman curry was just how I like it - a perfect balance of the creamy coconut milk and the Thai spice. Did I mention that they serve you a heaping bowl full of it too? I mean, there was enough for a small army to share this with me. The basil fried rice was really good too - but I was too afraid to try it because I saw my husband sweating like a pig from all the spice they added. My husband is crazy and will drink Tabasco by the gallons if I let him so I wasn't too worried about him. However, beware. If you ask for spice, they WILL not be shy with it. I cannot tell you how tickled I am that I've finally found a place in the area I live where I can get a 5 star meal. Stumbled upon Sawadee because Katana had a crap load of folks waiting to be seated. What a gem! Hole in the wall family owned Asian restaurants are the best. Everyone in our party of 5 loved what they ordered. The service is excellent, food comes out quickly and by 7:00 PM they had people lined up on the sidewalk waiting to get in. One of the things they do very well is tempura. The batter is light and crispy, not at all oily, just as it should be. The lobster tempura roll is ah-mazing. A single person would have a hard time finishing this dish. You get a large maki roll, delicious hot and crispy sweet potato tempura and a lobster shell filled with chunks of lobster tempura. They drizzle it with a sweet and salty sauce that turns the whole dish into crack. Everyone was oohing and aahing over this dish. The cheesecake tempura was not what I expected. Usually they give you a slice of cheesecake battered and fried, here you get small pieces of cheesecake wrapped in springroll wrappers. This is my new go to Thai spot. I visited for dinner along with my boy and two friends. My bf is a bit of a diva (more than a bit) and was a bit concerned about the aesthetics. Indeed the spot is very 70's paneled basement, I won't deny. But whatev. The smell was amazingly delicious and the place was packed with happy looking folks eating away. Digging the BYOB policy, we brought our beer and bubbly. The lovely server even brought a bucket for my bubbly! I'm the veggie in the crowd. While steamed veggies aren't on the menu, I assumed I can have what I want (as always) and ordered steamed veggies. We also ordered veggie fried rice. My crew ordered a variety of meat dishes. My veggies were fresh and crisp. Rice was flavorful and light on the oil as I requested. My bf isn't one for detail, but reports that his Sweet and Sour Chicken was fresh and super good. This is a very good Thai restaurant. The service is friendly and all the food is spot on, and a good value. The restaurant is a little dingy and cramped (that's MIami Beach for you), but I enjoy this spot. Best part? BYOB. That is so clutch, I can't even describe it. Pretty good value here (especially given the BYOB), so it beats most places price wise. Beware though this restaurant is very popular with locals and gets crowded in a hurry. Put in an order for pickup but once we went in to get the food and saw they had sushi we changed it to stay ;) the place is very small but it's decorated nicely; we went early (around 6) so it wasn't very crowded but I know late night it can be. When you get tired of the high prices and pretentiousness of South Beach, head north to this charming Thai place right off the 79th Street Causeway. I am a vegetarian, and this is NOT a vegetarian restaurant; however, Sawadee is very veg-friendly. Any meat item can be replaced with tofu. I had the veggie fried rice with tofu (it had egg in it, so if you don't eat eggs, make sure to leave that out). It was delicious and the tofu was prepared perfectly. My friend had the sweet and sour veggie dish with tofu, and it was also delicious - I loved the pineapple in this dish. The service was fantastic and the prices are unbelievably cheap (at lunchtime). For around $7, you get a main dish, vegetarian spring rolls, and a vegetable soup - that was REALLY good; you also get white rice (brown rice is a little extra). The nighttime prices are higher; with the average dish being between $12 - $15. They are open for lunch, then close around 3:30, then open again for dinner. Street parking is all over - as well as meters. I never found parking to be a problem. There is a metered lot to the left of the restaurant. This is a hole in the wall. I went to this place last Friday with my boyfriend, and ever since I've been wanting to go back. It's a cute hole in the wall that's BYOB, and space definitely is tight. Luckily we were able to sit down upon walking in but all the other tables (and the small dining counter) were occupied. I ordered the pad thai and requested that they add shrimp (it's only $3 more!), and oh my was I impressed. The shrimp was cooked just enough to be done on the outside, and the fresh shrimpy flavor to remain on the inside. The noodles were out of this world delicious, and were generously garnished with green onions, and fresh bean sprouts. On the side there was a lime wedge and peanut bits. It was teh nomz! My significant other ordered the green curry to which he delightfully ate, and vocally expressed that it was equally spicy as it was delicious. Post main course we ordered the Thai doughnuts and Thai tea. The doughnuts were the best I've ever had! I seriously need to go back here soon. The food is consistent, the service attentive and if you go often enough she will start your order the minute you walk in. Now that's something you don't get often! At about 9:50pm, the car took us to 79th street causeway, and as we drove nothing caught our attention, until we drove right past Swaddee and decided to turn around and give it a try. The places is super small. Three two-person tables, and two four-person tables, plus two bistro tables outside. Very quaint, and the service was quick and attentive. We both settled on the green curry - me medium spicy w/tofu, Em's mild with chicken; and a JB roll for an appetizer. The roll was good, but Emilio commented it wasn't fresh, I usually can't tell, so I'll defer to his opinion. My curry was very spicy, so I'd definitely get the mild next time so I can enjoy the taste better. The portions were very large, and though Em ate most of his plate, I probably took more than half home with me - It kept well, and made for a great re-heated dinner last night! I loved how quaint this little cafe/restaurant was, but I wouldn't say it's become my fave thai/sushi destination. On my way to another restaurant (Katana), I walked by Sawaddee Thai. It was empty with few people but the atmosphere seemed intimate and the food looked good. When I got to Katana there was at least a 15min wait so my friend and I stopped by this place, and it was a great decision. The sushi was delicious the only downside is that all of the sushi rolls that we got had cooked fish. I'm not sure if we just happened to order the cooked fish ones or this is the way they prepare all the rolls but I was in the mood for raw sushi. Either way the spider maki and dragon roll were both delicious. The prices were reasonable around $6 for a simple salmon roll and $12 for the fancier sushi rolls. The servers were attentive to our needs. It also helps that it's such a small restaurant that there's no way they can't see you. The decor was a bit disorganized but I appreciate the bamboo and buddha statues. I'll definitely have to make a return trip. read more

I've been to this place twice now. The first time the food was just ok, but I wanted to give it another shot and and I'm glad I did. The food was good. Not great, but good and I dig the close quarters; remincent of something in San Francisco or NYC with a capacity of about 20 , tops. It's warm and cozy and the staff is plenty friendly. They don't have an alcohol license, so you have to bring your own bottle or two. I prefer white w/spicy thai. Sawadee is more than happy to chill it for you while you're waiting for your entrees. Love/Hate relationship with this place. It's a hole in the wall Thai/Sushi spot that's in the North Shore neighborhood. What sets this place apart, and keeps me along with many other friends coming back is the quality food. Their sushi tastes fresh and made very well. I'll admit, I'm a boring sushi orderer (California, spicy tuna, and Boston roll usually do it for me). I've also tried their Pad Thai on occasion, and it's also very good. I haven't dined here, just pickup. It's kinda tiny, and I get claustrophobic easily in this place, even when I'm just waiting to pickup my order! However, they do have a BYOB policy which is pretty cool and not so common. What I don't love (aside from the tiny space), is bad parking, and they don't have their EAT24 delivery working correctly! The food was good, but nothing to write home about. I got the green curry, which was tasty, but not out of this world. It could have been a little spicier. I've tried all my usual Thai favorites - the Tom Yum Goong was good but the broth wasn't balanced - a little heavy on the lemongrass. The house salad with ginger dressing was a bit lacking in freshness but the Pad Thai Chicken and Red Curry Beef were both satisfying. They let you carry in your own wine, adding to the quaint neighborhood vibe. They also do a lot of takeout -- which can sometimes slow down table service -- but the staff is completely gracious. Sawaddee Thai is a place that had been mentioned to me by a few friends and after seeing the Yelp reviews I was sold. Tucked away on a side street right off of 79th (6968 Bay Drive to be exact) this hole in the wall is amazing! Although Yelp lists the ambience as "casual" I would opt to use words such as funky, bizarre and unique when describing the area. Dimly lit by hanging lantern lights paired with Asian knickknack, including an interesting Buddha figure carrying an electric ball, you certainly don't feel like you are in Kansas anymore. The place is very small and authentic (I mean a 16 seat capacity small and so authentic you can barely understand your waitress). With five years in business Sawaddee remains one of the best kept foodie secrets in Miami. We started our dining experience by ordering a plate of spring rolls to munch on while we thoroughly looked over the menu. Once the spring rolls hit the table I knew I had not been led astray by the recommendations to stop here. Service was quick and before I knew it Vegetable Pad Thai and Ginger Pineapple Duck had quickly landed a spot in my stomach and a permanent spot as my new favorite authentic Thai restaurant. This is my all time favorite restaurant. The food is amazing, always fresh. The Thai dishes are great!! The best thing is the service, you feel like you hired your own personal chef at home. Very welcoming and the owners have even become our friends on a personal level. Very romantic and small. Authentic ingredients such as kaffir lime leaves, fragrant lemongrass and ginger root marry with coconut milk & thai spices to make the best chicken soup I've ever had! I do crave this soup all the time its my new obsession. I went for lunch with my husband. It was our first time there. Several friends had recommended Sawaddee Thai and I'm glad I took their advice. The food was very good, the servings were generous for lunch, and the prices were reasonable. They have sushi on their menu but we went for the Thai food. Thai food is all about the sauces. I ordered tofu with basil and my husband had ginger. I took home a beef with garlic and a pad Thai for my mom. The lunches come with a small spring roll, white rice, and a cup of the soup of the day. Each one of the four dishes, (the two we ate there and the two we brought home), were $6.95 each. The service was friendly and attentive. The couple sitting next to us ordered the Thai donuts. This is a surprisingly awesome Thai restaurant. We came here kind of as an accident, a last resort since everywhere we wanted to go was closed on Sunday. Everything had incredible flavor, even the fried tofu appetizer that was lightly fried it to get a crisp skin going instead of soaking in oil. The panang curry was nuanced and had a decent heat to it. The vegetable pad thai was delicious and had a good assortment of real vegetables instead of filler onions that I usually pick out. The only negatives were the slightly difficult parking and the long wait. It is a very popular restaurant apparently and it only has like 6 tables which aren't seated as promptly as you could because the staff can't keep up. Don't get me wrong, they were incredibly nice and knowledgeable, but between all the phone orders and the eat-in patrons, I think they purposefully slow things down for the kitchen which is TINY. read more

It's definitely a great place for a date: very intimate place talk, no rush to leave and the servers are so friendly. I read about this restaurant on yelp and decided to try it out. The reviews were on point! Everything was delicious! Small restaurant but has a very romantic and chic look inside. We ordered the papaya salad with the hot flavor, Garlic chicken, JB roll and the spider roll. Everything was great! My favorite was the Papaya salad. The prices were also very reasonable. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the server wasn't the most pleasant women. She didn't seem happy to be there and seemed like she just wanted us in and out. If it wasn't for her this restaurant would most definitely be a 5 star. Also make sure that if you are bringing drinks that it's not hard liquor. The Papaya Salad was fresh, health & addictively tasty, the rice noodle chicken soup was too big to eat myself as well as the Pad Thai which could easily feed two hearty eaters. Apparently Sawaddee does not want more patrons... I attempted to order ( pick up) from them 3 times in the past 10 days ( 4 times if you count the night I couldn't get through, always getting a busy signal). - 1st attempt: the person on the phone tells me their computer is down and they can't take orders. Have you ever heard of a business ( and a restaurant at that!) that won't take orders because their computer is on the fritz? I haven't! How about good old pen and paper!?!? If it's a billing issue, then just tell me "the computer is down and we can only take cash payments". - 2nd attempt: "no, sorry, the kitchen is about to close, we don't take new orders". OK, reasonable....Except their official closing time was stated as 2 hours away. So I asked for future reference at what time their kitchen closed. "In one hour" she tells me. Huh!?!? -3rd attempt: I tell the lady I'd like to order for pickup. She sounds like I am bothering her, and tells me "ok, wait", and puts the phone down. So I wait...and wait, and wait....I can hear people speaking near the phone, so I start loudly saying "Hello" to remind them that someone is on the line waiting. To no avail. 15 minutes have gone by, and pissed I finally hang up. I tried calling back, but the line was busy for my next 4 attempts. So I guess they don't like pick up orders, don't like to take new orders when closing time is 2 hours away, don't have a second line or call waiting, and just really don't care to have customers or even bother to be polite. That is really a shame ( for them....although maybe not since they don't seem to want customers), because we just moved in their neighborhood and are ordering food almost every night, and Thai food about 3 times per week. This place is a great spot for quick and easy Thai food. Their menu is not as extensive as Panya Thai (North Miami Beach), but they have the classics that most will associate with Thai cuisine. The noodle dishes (Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, and Rad Na) were solid, the green curry was good, and the soups were delicious. On my first visit, hubby got green curry with chicken. The curry was excellent, but the chicken was rubbery and overcooked. On our second visit, we went for lunch and opted for tofu as the "meat" in all of our dishes. The lunch special is a steal. Ok. We have Thai food at least once a week. And the only thing I can see why this place was rated so high is fake Yelp reviews or a new chef. The food is fairly bland and reminds me of food you make at home with flavor packs and add meat. The upside is the soups were actually very tasty The other dishes though the Drunken was tasty the noodles looked like egg noodles from a grocery store but still good. The volcano chicken was so plain was like over-cooked chicken with sweet & sour sauce drizzle The garlic beef was fair not great The fish dish we returned since it had an acetone smell too it. No oversized drinks, no resort tax, and%20 percent gratuity is not already added to the bill. We visited on Friday and the restaurant was busy with diners on a quiet strip of road in the Normandy area. We were quickly and warmly greeted, seated and brought drinks. I was intrigued by the soft shell crab, which we ordered for appetizer. It didn't taste same day fresh as it was a little fishy so perhaps frozen and defrosted but you can fry anything and make it taste good. We got the spider roll, which also was fairly good! i wish they gave us more wasabi. For our main entrees we ordered beef green curry and chicken pad thai. We asked the server to make those dishes extra spicy and he seemed wary to do so, as we saw the same he was saying to other diners asking for extra extra spicy. He said he would put it into the kitchen for medium heat and bring out extra spice if we needed it. We absolutely needed extra heat. the medium is mild. But the SAUCE wow!!! Hot!!! but flavorful!! the stomach pains and ulcers were almost worth the taste. I'm a huge fan of real hot sauce, and homemade to boot. Get the hot sauce but use it sparingly! i started with a little and quickly realized that was all i needed whereas my boyfriend is crazy and drizzled that sauce on his pad thai like it was ketchup and was in for a world of pain. He at his entire dish though because it was delish! I ate most of my curry, the curry itself was great but the beef did not taste good. It seemed like it was just boiled bits of beef so it didn't have good flavor.
