I fell in love with SAW's during my time living in Birmingham, so I was super excited to stop by while visiting Bham recently. I went on a Friday afternoon and while SAW's was fairly empty, parking was pretty full because of the other stores on the block. However, I was able to squeeze in a spot a few doors down from SAW's. When I got inside, I ordered the smoked chicken plate with greens and macaroni and cheese as my sides as well as banana pudding for dessert. Alabama white sauce is my FAVE, so I couldn't wait to tear into my smoked chicken. The chicken was perfect - tender and juicy with a smoky flavor. The macaroni and cheese was way too wet, so I didn't eat much of it, but the greens were good! Aside from the chicken, the banana pudding was the star of the show! Omggg, it was absolutely perfect. I should've gotten another to go lol. I love SAW's and will always pay a visit when I'm in town. read more

I was in Alabama for a 48 hour work trip and on the way to Buc-ees I wanted to try some BBQ, so I found the best rated BBQ in town and this place was it! Someone in the reviews said that this place had "fall off the bone ribs" and that it was the best BBQ in BMH "hands down" and that the onion rings were sooo good. Boy was this place OVER HYPED!! I saw that there were 2 locations, but decided to pick the more hole-in-the-wall spot. Usually once a spot gets popular and they open a new "bigger and better" location, the quality of the food drops, so the Homewood location seemed like the best option.  As soon as you walk in, the smell of the BBQ is inviting and the girl at the counter was super nice.My coworker and I ordered the combo with a rack of ribs, 2 sides (mac n cheese, potato salad) and a pound of their pork with white bread and rolls.  The food came out within 5 minutes, which was great but also a bit troubling. It made me feel like everything was just sitting there in some tub waiting to be ordered. This combo was definitely for more than 2 people, but we weren't fazed! I tried the mac n cheese first...and the cheese was too thin...not a good consistency. Flavor was a bit lacking, but with some hot sauce, it was ok. The potato salad was ok, a bit mushy and lacked flavor as well. I did like the pork they gave us, but that bbq sauce was watery and too tart for me. I was hoping for some deep bbq flavor, but alas...twas not to be.  The ribs...NOT fall off the bone. Probably because of the sitting in a tub/heat lamp factor. The flavor was pretty good (this sauce was a bit thicker than the sauce they had bottled and gave with the pulled pork) The rack of ribs was pretty big with about 8 ribs or so. Oh, but they did NOT have any onion rings...they didn't even have a fryer! WTH man?!  Overall it was an OK experience, but Dallas and Memphis still has the best bbq I've had. Looking for a casual dining or takeout spot...this is it. My friend and I was looking for a spot located equal distances from each other and decided to try this place. We wanted to get good Birmingham BBQ and found this place on Yelp. We got the pulled pork, chicken, and ribs with the deviled eggs, baked beans, and turnip greens. The meat was very good. Although I'm not always crazy about chicken, here, it was amazing. I could drink the white sauce. The sides weren't bad, and what you'd expect at a bbq place. The beans were normal, the eggs, not overly tasty, and the greens sweetened - maybe sugar or honey. The cashier was not overly helpful, but polite enough. The atmosphere was quaint with lots of things to look at on the walls. Overall, I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. I'd consider visiting again. read more

Saw's is a charming hole-in-the-wall that makes for a great stop popular with locals. The employees are incredibly nice and the experience is definitely fun! I delved into a hearty sampler plate featuring a highlight of the various meats served up by Saw's. The chicken leg was really good, nice and tender falling off the bone. The grilled chicken skin smothered in spices was truly perfection, but I couldn't properly enjoy it through the Alabama White sauce. Even though that's my favorite sauce on the planet, I recommend getting it on the side so you can really savor that chicken skin! The real highlight was the mac 'n' cheese, with crispy browned cheesy pieces, and a creamy texture resembling the finest mashed potatoes. It's a unique texture and some of the best mac I've ever tried! The ribs were thankfully much larger than competitor Dreamland, whose ribs have now shrunk to a minuscule size, and dry as can be. These ribs were tender, but unfortunately not as good as I've had elsewhere. The third meat was either brisket or pulled pork? That wasn't great, but admittedly I've been spoiled by some of the world's greatest barbecue at legendary spots throughout Texas and North Carolina. So I have lofty standards. The barbecue sauce was also too watery and not nearly thick enough. But our overall experience was good and we love the people here. read more

If you've been to any of the Saw's locations around town then you probably already know that they're the standard in Bham when it comes to the pulled pork. This location is no different. The selection of sides vary between locations, so you can get the mac and cheese here..which they don't serve in Avondale, but they don't have the fries. But who cares about that? It's the pork. That's why you go. Decent amount of seating, parking can be a bit of a pain, but hey...you do what you gotta do to get that pork. Stop in and have some. You won't regret it. read more

Hell yes - BBQ at its finest in the south. The half a slab of ribs was more than enough to fill me up. I couldn't imagine getting a full slab. They are saucy - but literally fantastic. In terms of the sides - Mac n Cheese and Potato Salad (as recommended by staff) us what I rolled with. One of the better Mac n cheese I've had at restaurants like this. Potato salad is unique. A bar/restaurant with great BBQ or a BBQ joint with a bar? Whichever came first, it doesn't matter because the food (BBQ) is awesome and the adjoining restaurant/bar just as awesome. Based on reviews, I seeked SAW's for its food - I parked as it opened and thought that only a "take out" option was available. To the right of the main entrance is where people can pick up their take out or order...as I was ordering, it was mentioned that the dining area (and bar) was open for dining...BBQ and beer? Why not? They follow COVID protocols with limited seating. I ordered the "pork and greens" and "chicken and greens" - both entrée start on a bed of grits, then greens, pulled pork/chicken, and topped off with fried onions - oh boy, they were tasty. A vinegary flavor contrasted the full flavor of the pulled port (and chicken). Of the two, I recommend the pulled pork. To wash down the great food, I had an Avondale IPA (from a local brewery) in a can. They have the usual national brand of beer on tap and local breweries in cans. Many mentioned that the sweet tea chicken and hamburgers are good...if they are as good as the "pork and greens" or "chicken and greens" I definitely will be back to try them. Located in Crestwood, it seemed that I was driving through a residential area before finally reaching the place. Saw's was as advertised. I got a full slab of their wet ribs with baked beans and potato salad. Everything was good. Be warned though. A full slab could easily feed 3 grown men. I wish that not so cheerful employee wouldn't have pointed that out or told me it's a lot food. I was also surprised there wasn't any wait when we visited. I always struggle to give 5 starts because I think of that as perfect, but this place is definitely better than 4 stars. I ate hear what feels like a decade ago and remember it being good, so naturally when my path took me through the area again I had to try it again. I may be older, but my memory did not deceive me. This place has a great southern bbq joint feel when you walk in. I got a sampler because you must if you love bbq. The ribs, chicken and pulled pork were all smoked perfectly with flavor that popped and the meat was complimented well by their vinegar based bbq sauce which had just the right amount of kick. They also had white bbq for the chicken also great! The baked beans were delicious. The Mac n cheese was a bit over cooked making the noodles mushy. Service was speedy and welcoming. This is hands down the best tasting bbq in Birmingham by far. The smoked chicken with white bbq sauce will rock your palette wild. It is so tender and moist (chicken is lean so very tough to accomplish). Do not try to be healthy and skip eating the skin as the skin is the best part. It is seasoned with a myriad of spices and has such great texture. The white bbq sauce, poured generously over the chicken, brings the whole thing together. It tastes like a better version of ranch dressing, which when paired with the seasoning on the chicken is sooo good. As far as sides go, the mac and cheese is perfection. It is cheesy and has just the right hints of pepper and paprika. I'm not a fan of the turnip greens. It has a weird molasses like aftertaste. I paid $15 for a massive plate of food with two massive quarters of chicken. Definitely hit the gym and wear stretchy pants when planning an outing to Saw's! read more

The chicken sandwich with white sauce is my fam's favorite and it's pretty solid too, if chicken is more your thing. It's hard to go wrong with any of the sides but my two faves are the baked beans and mac n cheese. *chef's kiss* This location doesn't have anything fried, so you can't get any fried pickles (check out the downtown location especiallllly for those), but don't shy away because of that. It gets pretty packed during lunch and it's a pretty tiny location but I like that there are a few tables outside when the weather is nice. Plus, they have local beer! Where has white bbq sauce been all my life? Wow, loved it. The pulled pork was good and didn't not come with sauce on it. The ribs seemed very fatty to me but the sauce was good. The chicken was quite charred but the sauce made the chicken amazing. The turnip greens were better than most. The Cole slaw didn't have mayo which is how I like it but I am in the south.
