Came here with coworker for lunch. I ordered the Pulled Pork Plate. It was delicious. One of the best pulled pork place ever, considering I come from NYC. Also the food price in here is way cheaper than in NYC. In here it was $15.5 per plate whereas it would cost around $30 in NYC. If I lived in here I would come here every day for lunch. Saw's Juke Joint has been one of my favorite joints in Birmingham. This time I brought some of my buddies from Dothan in to give it a try. The location is in the middle of a suberb. There is a bar area but the atmosphere feeling is of a dive. The seating area is larger than the other Saw's locations. There are chalkboards in the main room that have the menu on the wall. The menu is diverse and has lots of things I love: BBQ pulled pork, burgers, wings, and the famous Sweet Tea Chicken Sandwich. Everything is a la carte. My order today included the Sweet Tea Chicken sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and potato salad. The Sweet Tea Chicken sandwich has its batter made from brining sweet tea. I think it is a better Chick-fil-a sandwich and comes with white BBQ sauce and pickles. If you have never had white Alabama BBQ sauce, it has a tangy taste to it. Most white Alabama BBQ sauce is made from mayo, lemon juice, black pepper, and horseradish. The pulled pork was amazingly tender and juicy. It came with a vinegar style BBQ sauce but I would recommend adding the sweeter, thicker BBQ sauce that you have to ask for. I did love the potato salad at one time from here because it was very creamy and tangy like it was made from the Alabama white sauce. But the last 2 times, it hasn't been as good. It seems the salad doesn't congeal together. My buddy got fried pickles and they were satisfactory. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! Met some gentlemen there for a midday get together and introduced them to Saw's. We all had something different and everyone enjoyed their dishes. Jordan was our waitress and she did a great job. First time visiting tonight off of a recommendation from someone who lives in Birmingham. Wait was not bad at all for a party of 7, however, that was the best part of the night. BBQ joint that was out of pork, no oysters, out of the only flavor of beer I wanted and then the wait to get the food was extremely long. Our server Maddie was great! She was very polite and knowledgeable about the menu. My mom and I had the patty melt, which happened to be the special that day. It was delicious. My only complaint is that it was a little greasy. The sweet potato fries were perfect for the side and perfectly cooked. The overall appearance of the place gives off an eclectic southern style. I had the Fried Green Tomato BLT and it was incredible! The greens were also really good and the pulled pork plate was really big. Every time we came in, my mom and shared the plate since the portions were big! I also got the fried okra which was really good but some of the pieces were hard to get through. This is my favorite location and it's a great spot to meet friends for dinner and drinks and listen to some music. The staff was very friendly and the was amazing as always. This is one of those places where everything is good. I got the smoked dog, boudin, sweet potato fries, and turnip greens - all good. I really enjoyed the boudin because it was dressed in a highly vinegar-based sauce. Sweet potato fries were also on point. One point of improvement might be to offer to dress up the smoked dog with some additional ingredients. This restaurant is a Birmingham classic, and it is not hard to see why. read more

I might as well review Saw's juke joint because it's an easy review to write. The food is awesome. They've got the same BBQ as the other Saw's locations which is in my opinion, (which is shared by many), the best BBQ in town hands down. This location has the most seating out of all of them. So if you find yourself in a bus full of people who all want Saw's, please go to the Juke Joint so that you'll all have a place to sit. A bar area in this location separates it from the others. You can get drunk here if you want, so that's a plus....and the parking is better than both the Avondale and Homewood locations. So if you and your friends are thinking of getting drunk and ordering BBQ, and you're fed up with the madness that is parking in Avondale and the area in Homewood near that location, and you might need a little more space to stretch out then the Juke Joint should be calling your name. read more

Excellent food as always! My favorite BBQ I've had in the Birmingham area. Our server was great, but the inside of the restaurant could use a little sprucing up to make it look a little nicer. I'm sure they are trying to to for the "hole in the wall BBQ joint" look though, and at the end of the day, the food is so good, who cares what the restaurant looks like. One thing they are doing during the pandemic is having you scan a QR code to pull up the menu, rather than distributing out actual menus. The problem with this though, is there is poor cell phone service there, so this isn't very efficient. They are checking temps at the door and enforcing masks for though, so A+ for effort to keep us safe! read more

When my mom came to visit me in Birmingham this past weekend, I had to make sure we went to Saw's BBQ for dinner one night, as it is one of my favorite restaurants. My mom and I both really love BBQ, so she definitely was pleased with this choice. It was quite crowded when we went, but we were sat at a table and waited on very quickly. All of the staff was super friendly and helpful as well. They had live music during the time we were there, which we enjoyed! Granted, during this unique time, all places are offering a different experience. But after a text from a close friend, I had no idea of the possibilities of this gem in a small shopping center near my house. To-go bushwhackers. Don't know what a bushwhacker is? It is a frostee, chocolatey and boozy concoction not built for the weak. It came in a milk container you would buy at the convenience store. And they can only do two per person. But I promise you that if you do this with lunch, that is the maximum you will want. Pair this with their already amazing burger (it is REALLY good), and call it a Covid19 win of a pick up meal. This is a casual place with great food and a fun atmosphere. If you are looking for a locals favorite, you won't be disappointed.

I came here with a big group of friends (9) on a Saturday evening! The atmosphere is great here - there is live music going on in the bar area and it flows well with the restaurant setup. However, we experienced a long wait due to parties watching the Auburn game. So we did have a little frustration with that and also our wait time not being true to what we were told initially. What made up for that was the server that kept checking on us while we waited outside and also a table that was seated outside. He asked if we wanted any drinks while we waited and that helped to somewhat offset the long wait time for our party. My wife and I ordered Bushwhackers as our drink - I did it as a bet and I had never had one before. The drink was good, however not one I would consider as a go-to because of how strong the alcohol was in it compared to the chocolate/creamy flavor that is in one. Also, it packs a punch and will have you feeling good afterwards so be aware if you try one! Again, well-made drink but not my personal preference. When we finally got seated at our table, it did not take long for our food to arrive, which given the large crowd and how hungry our group had become, it was impressive! I ordered the classic pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato fries. My wife and I split an order of fried pickles as an appetizer- all of which where splendid. I would've preferred having thicker BBQ sauce, but the taste of sufficed for me. I tried a bit of my wife's side with her order - fried green beans - and thought that they were mediocre at best but by that time, I had became full which is a good thing because the food I had ordered myself was quite filling. Our server took well care of us and made sure we had our needs met. Overall, it was a great experience! You may come for the BBQ, but the side orders will have you wanting more. The only downsides was the wait being longer then what we were told and the fried okra being out of season (can't control that, but that's okay). We were in Birmingham last month and wanted to try some Alabama bbq, heard all about this white sauce. After looking up reviews on yelp, we decided to head to Saw's Juke Joint. We ordered fried pickles, wings, chicken with the white sauce sandwich, and pulled pork sandwich. Well the wings were the highlight of the night - only reason why this place even gets a 2nd star, they were great! All the other stuff - pickles were just okay, the chicken was not good - it's really all about the white sauce all over it and if you aren't a fan of the white sauce, it is just not good. Lastly, the pulled pork, tasted like crock pot bbq rather than good smoked bbq. I feel really bad for Alabama if this is what you call the best bbq in town or great bbq. Saws is one of my favorite spots. I'm in town from Nashville a lot and always try to stop by. Today was my first visit back since the Spring. Really upset to see they've decreased their wing portion to 5 wings and gone up to $2 a wing. That's right. $10 for 5 wings. The best wings I've ever had from Martins BBQ in Nashville (which is a very expensive town) are $1.29 per wing. You get 6 for $7.79, same as their Birmingham location. Saws wings are awesome. But $10 for 5 wings is robbery and very disappointing. Not worth the extra time to get over here. Just 6 months ago the wings were 8 for $12.50, which is still high but reasonable. Sad this will be my last stop here. Update: an employee says the wings were almost discontinued due to supplier cost. Must not be buying from Martin's supplier. read more

Came across this joint while road tripping in the south. I was searching for the best pulled pork sandwich in Birmingham and here i am! I had heard, seen, and read a lot of reviews before making a final choice. Location: I head down from vulcan park and let me tell is the best scenery in town. You will drive through beautiful mix of architecture with english and southern american style. It will be chilling and just preparing you for the joint. They share a shopping mall with other restaurants/bars so i suggest to be patient and pray for a quick spot. Ambient: I arrived by Friday 6 pm and it was busy, as i walked in i was greeted with a friendly smile and kindness which is always nice to experience. I decided to order to go since i been driving on the road a long time but if the food holds on the flavor until you make it home or hotel (then you know how good the place is). The establishment has two sides one that family dinner oriented and another bar/lounge with a live band. The bar lounge had a more adult scene, perfect for couples and single people and friends to hang out. The bartender is the one that took my order and offered several recommendations (such a great quality to have in all your employees) Food quality: I took the food to the hotel and 2 hours later, i was surprised the sandwich held up pretty nice. I do this on purpose because it says a lot about the quality of the food. The bread had good texture and it didn't get saggy after i pour the sauce. When you take that bite the heavens go down to earth. When you feel that smoky flavors over the ting of the sauce thats how you know they hit a home run! Recommendations: I got the banana pudding which is a must when in Alabama. I also saw on instagram they offer a catfish sandwich that i heard is divine so add it to your list. All of the Saw's locations are amazing, but in my opinion they all specialize in the "best" for example, the one in Homewood has amazing chicken, bbq pork, and potato salad. This location has an amazing sweet tea chicken sandwich, pulled bbq chicken, and the Onion Rings are my absolute favorite ever!! The best part about the onion rings is they are super thin and skinny Amd they give you like an entire onion! I will say, they are a little greasy, but they are fried. What do you expect?
