What made the experience more worthwhile was Jordans(our waitress) friendly demeanor and contagious smile. Saw's BBQ is a MUST VISIT when in Birmingham. It's crazy good food in a casual neighborhood bar. The smoked wings are INSANE: smoky, sweet, crispy, sticky, tender. I crave this dish on a weekly basis. Also, you can't miss the sweet tea fried chicken sandwich. It's like a Chick-fil-A sandwich... but much better. The chicken's perfectly crispy, and the white sauce really sets the whole thing off. Let's not forget dessert: BANANA PUDDING. I was surprised by the location in the middle of a neighborhood--very cool. My guest and I came here on a Friday night, parking lot was pretty full, thought we'd have to wait. We were able to get seated promptly. Menu had a variety selection to my liking. Not a typical bbq selection. The pork n greens were a wonderful combination. I hesitated to order since I've never been a grits person. I'm glad I chose to be adventurous. Yum yum! The fried green tomatoes were good. The mustard based sauce was good but it didn't seem to work with the tomatoes, at least not for my taste. This place is definitely a go-to for the future. read more

This place was packed to the brim with people. This is one of my friend's favorite BBQ place in Birmingham. And I love BBQ. So I was down. This place has such a college vibe to it. Or country vibe. Either way, you don't have to wear your Sunday best. We were seated fairly quickly. We didn't have to wait too long for them to take our order and get our drinks. It did, however, take just a little bit, for the food to come in. But as I said before, it was very busy. I ordered the pulled pork BBQ baked potato. And I was SO happy. I am from Alabama, and I still haven't tried the white bbq. I am not ready for it yet. haha. I recall only one person not liking her food, but it was because she doesn't like BBQ. My other two friend got the sweet tea fried chicken, and the name itself almost made me pick that one out. But I was so filled after eating the baked potato, I had it for left overs. We took some out of town family members to Saw's Juke Joint for dinner on Saturday. We arrived about 5 pm and didn't have any trouble getting a table, though the place filled up quickly. There was some confusion about the table since she took our party of 5 to a table for 4. We scooted a small table over to us but when the server came she said that wasn't her table and had us rearrange. None of us wanted to sit in the doorway at the end but we made it work. Service was a little slow but the food was great. We shared some fried pickles and smoked chicken thighs and had a variety of entries. Everyone was happy with what they got. I enjoyed the catfish and greens and ended up taking most of it home. It was a bit loud for conversation but still worked out as a good place to take guests. read more

Excellent little no fills eatery. Beer selection is average.... above average if you like IPA's. The food was awesome. The smoked chicken wings are an absolute must. We ended up getting 2 orders of 10 as the first order was so good. For dinner, I was all set to get a combo of pork and beef brisket but then.... NIRVANA went by... a stuffed baked potato headed to another table. So, I ordered the fully loaded BP with a side of brisket. (They had run out of brisket however. The loaded BP had smoked pork, chicken and bacon with cheese, butter, sour cream and chives. It could have fed a small family. I couldn't take the whole thing down but got through 70%. I went to Saw's Juke Joint on a Saturday night with a group of 8. A friend got there an hour early to ensure we were seated not long after everyone arrived. We ended up waiting two hours for a table and watched several parties be seated before us. Once we were finally seated, our waitress was quick to get our orders and the food came out fast. She did seem annoyed by our large party but at that point her attitude was the least of our worries. I got the BBQ Pork potato and onion rings. Saw's has the reputation of being "the best bbq in town" so we made the trip over for lunch on a Saturday. At almost 1pm, the place was hoppin' with just a few open tables, but they were able to seat us right away. We sat down, ordered, and food was brought over to us really quickly. I was surprised at how fast food came out despite how busy it was... but a great surprise indeed! We got fried pickles to share. What's not to love about fried pickles? For $3.99 it is a steal.... a huge portion with a side of ranch. Nice cornmeal batter.. just a bit on the salty side, but I suppose that is the nature of pickles to begin with. They were crispy and not oily or soggy at all- a risk that can come with fried pickles done wrong. These were done right! Husband got the sweet tea fried chicken sandwich with fries. The sandwich has pickles, white BBQ sauce, the fried chicken and a bun. Good combo and crispy fried chicken. The white BBQ sauce was a nice touch. The French fries were your standard fries. Good and crispy. I got the "Pork n Greens" platter for $10.99. If you have never been here before, it is a layered platter of grits, BBQ pork, BBQ sauce, greens, then finally topped withfried onion string rings. A delicious combo and SO much food! We had some left overs to bring home... can't wait to eat it again :) One thing I knocked off a star for is their use of styrofoam and plastic ware. Everything comes on disposable means. For a sit down BBQ restaurant, it would be nice to eat on a real plate, drink out of a real cup... you get the idea. It's not so much an "ambiance" issue for me than it is an environmental issue. Our landfills and future generations would benefit from reusable dinnerware. End rant. read more

I am a big fan of Saw's Juke Joint. I've been here several times and every visit has been fantastic. From the moment i walked in, I noticed that the staff was friendly and helpful. The menu is fairly simple, but everything I've tried has been amazing. It's hard to pick a favorite, but if I was forced to I'd choose their wings. They are awesome. It's too much, but get the 10 count as you don't want to stop at 5. You can share the wings you can't eat with your friends or take them home for a snack. This last time I ordered the sweet tea fried chicken sandwich. It was huge and oh so good. It had a white BBQ sauce on top that was a very nice touch. I will order extra sauce on the side next time for dipping purposes; however, their red BBQ sauce is heavenly, too. It's hard to pick the better sauce. The fries are good, but I really like their onion rings and fried pickles. Can't go wrong with any of these. Two thumbs up for Saw's JJ. It's great for lunch or dinner. I'll definitely be back. Saw's Juke Joint has the best cheeseburger in Birmingham, in my opinion. The smoked wings, sweet tea chicken sandwich, pork & greens, stuffed baker and basically everything else on the menu is great too, but the burger stands out to me. It's a standard beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, special sauce cheeseburger, but it is anything but average. As a self proclaimed burger connoisseur, I've tried every cheeseburger in town that's been hyped. The Saws Juke Joint Cheeseburger is the gold standard I compare the rest to. If you want to scratch the burger itch but aren't starving, order the kids burger with the big cheeseburger set up. The staff is very helpful with stuff like this. They also have different specials daily. The Friday special is usually Fish and that's a real treat regardless of the type of fish or how it's prepared. Sunday special is the patty melt - a favorite hangover cure for me. Tuesday special is usually the "tomato stack" - a tower of fried green tomatoes - that unfortunately is a summer only special I'm afraid. They switch up the specials a lot aside from the above mentioned regulars. They aren't "BBQ" dishes - we end up ordering the special most of the time since eating cheeseburgers daily is apparently unhealthy. Or so I'm told. We've become friends with nearly everyone on staff which keeps us coming back again and again. They're incredibly friendly, play good music, have good conversation, and remember your name if you frequent the place. You'll actually notice a lot of the same folks around the bar every time you're there. It's a very family friendly place. My kids love it and the staff love them too actually. There's a park ("Crestline Park") not far away if you want to bring your family for a lunch, short walk, and play time. It's a great way to spend a couple hours before nap time. The only "issue" is the parking. Which is a good problem for them since the lot isn't small. It's just a popular place. There's rarely a long wait if you're willing to eat at the bar. Believe the hype! I've lived in Bham nearly two years and have tried most of the popular BBQ spots; Saws is my favorite...hands down. I've visited both the Juke Joint and the Avondale location. The food is equally fabulous at both, but, if you are looking for more space and/or a bar, check out the Juke Joint. It has a laid back, chill vibe which makes it an easy place to unwind and relax. I've been to this location twice. Both times the service from both the host and the server was prompt. It was not over the top friendly, but it was attentive and just what I needed. The food is the reason to come and I do not believe it could disappoint. I have had the sweet tea chicken sandwich, pork and greens (served over grits and topped with thinly sliced onion rings), and Saw's Burger, all of which were incredibly satisfying and tasty. I've also tried the fried pickles, fried green tomatoes, and sweet potato fries, again all delicious. The sweet potato fries were some of the best I have ever had (amazing taste and texture...not too crispy, not too "soggy"...they were just right). Regarding sweets, it's unlikely you will have room for dessert, but I recommend getting an order of the banana pudding to go. read more

Recently I was given the responsibility to find a meeting place for my company on short notice including 10 managers. My first thought was to suggest Saw's, knowing they have a private room to the side which turned out to be to perfect for our group side. I called the restaurant two days prior to the meeting and the manger, Randy, was more than willing to accommodate us with the space. In the end it was a success thanks to the staff and genuine ability to help us. Okay, food is great, as it is at the other Saw's locations. However, the hostess and the waiting list situation is ridiculous. There are 20-30 people in line (hard to count in the Bar section) including young children. Yet THERE ARE FOUR OPEN TABLES RIGHT BEHIND ME!!! You can see three in the attached photo and there is a really big table that would seat at least 8 out of view. Now to be fair, in the time it took me to write this, all four of the tables were filled, we got one of them, and we ordered. But I was standing around for a while trying to figure out what was taking so long for quite some time. I think it's more of the lack of any system than the hostess's fault, and I began to suspect that she was as frustrated as the guests. This is the so-called "system" of this hugely popular (and I'm assuming highly profitable) restaurant consists of: 1. A hostess with an extra order pad. Nope, not even a full-sized sheet of paper. One of those little green pads, and the overworked hostess writes down your name while squinting in the dim light. Have you ever heard of an "overworked hostess" before? Neither have I. 2. The hostess spots a party leaving, consults her tiny and barely legible pad to see who's next and how many in the party to see if she needs to move on to the next scribbled name. 3. The overworked hostess then tries to navigate the crowded bar and likely has to wander outside in search of the party she is trying to seat. This takes forever, as you can imagine. Not the hostess's fault. 4. If the hostess cannot find that party, she must again consult the Pad of Knowledge. Now perhaps she could have carried the pad with her, but really, this is not the right equipment for a hostess at a popular restaurant. This is how there were four tables open within 15 feet of me with 20+ people in line. Perhaps I could be accused of piling on, but the unnecessarily long wait put me in a critical mood. I usually eat at the Avondale location, and the various Saw's locations do have slightly different menus. But I ordered the "Pork & Greens," probably the most popular item on the menu (except in Homewood, which doesn't serve it). The dish has a bed of greens topped with grits, topped with barbecue, and a handful of thin and crispy onion rings on top. Delicious! The problem this time was that there was too little greens and too little grits. I ran out of both greens and grits when I was only 2/3 of the way through the scrumptious pork barbecue. Yes, this is being very petty and picky, but there's a reason it's called a "dining experience." And the barbecue isn't as good without the grits and greens, which is the reason it's served that way in the first place. So, my suggestion is that Saw's spring for a waitlist system that would ring my mobile when my table is ready. It would vastly improve the experience, and free up a lot of hostess time! They'd probably get a free 0.5 FTE. read more

We came across town for the wings and it wasn't even worth it. Service was very rude. When we asked about military discounts the bartender said they accepted it. Then when we told him we were in the military he said only if we were in military uniform which was very strange. . When we had questions about the menu Tucker, our server/bartender at the time, wasn't helpful at all, but to the customers beside us we could hear him answering all questions in regards to all requests they had. We felt very uncomfortable in this place. They were not welcoming to newcomers at all. Do not recommend. read more
