Called the office in the evening before the wake to get information on their space and equipment but was directed to a call center and was advised to leave a message which I didn't do so. Then tried calling the office the next morning to check on the maximum capacity of their rooms, but the staff was unable to provide proper information. On the evening of my church member's wake we had a huge turnout and the space was definitely not set up to tend to groups larger than 150 people. The MAIN downside was trying to show a DVD on the life of my church member that was deceased. The 30 inch TV was set up in the middle(waiting) room. Imagine your TV is in the living room but you're in the bedroom (this was how I felt). The guests were seated in three different rooms and the microphone system was ineffective even in the main room where the casket was placed. The set up, IMO is not up to standard to other funeral homes that I had visited in Brooklyn and Staten Island. With the cost they are charging it feels like Highway Robbery to someone whose loved one had just died, possibly going through a severe emotional downfall and is vulnerable to being taken advantage of financially. From that experience, I learned to check around for the different costs on funeral services in Brooklyn. I was in the middle of a difficult situation when my 22 year old son died suddenly of heart failure. My ex showed up with 5 family members, ready to bury my son, that I raised alone- with no say of mine. I found out about it, and showed up at the Funeral home. They went out of their way to help me have a fair say- and not be outnumbered. When it became clear that I was being put under attack, the director Joanne had everyone leave the room except my ex husband and I, who then came to an agreement within 10 minutes. They were very sympathetic to my loss as well as the difficulty I was given by my ex, his new wife, and some of his family, yet very professional. During my time of weakness and vulnerability, they made sure they gave input and made compromises themselves in order to lay my son to rest peacefully. If 0 stars were an option, they'd have 0. Would you like a do over? These are the words of Joanne Scamardella today after she disgustingly ruined a funeral. After making inappropriate jokes and waiting until everyone left to inform the family she had no one available to carry the casket to the hurst. The flowers were askew and they charged over 700$ for hand sanitizer and a covid ruled service. Not a single present staff member wore a mask. Joanne made it a point to tell people she had no interest in the mask and was talking to everyone and touching them. The website announced the burial service would be at 1:30, not only did they argue that it was 1:15 and then changed their website mid telephone conversation later on in the evening, they had some one blocking the cemetery entrance and turning family away, informing them that the service was over when in fact everyone was still at the grave site. While 4 family members carried the casket out of the funeral home Joanne continuously made comments about the size of the woman in the casket and thus causing the casket to be heavier than normal. Later in the evening upset family members called the funeral to discuss how upset they were and Joanne along with gentlemen members who run the business started to mock the people on the phone. After quite some time on the phone Joannes response was "what would you like us to do? Would you like a do over?" Completely disgusted by this place. My cousin suffered the loss of her baby boy and when she called to recieve the remains after the cremation she was told that they had not picked the baby up from the crematory, it had been 9 days. when she questioned why it was taking so long she was told " we have not been to the facilty to collect the remains because there have not been too many deaths warranting a trip to the cremation facility". REALLY? Are you F@#$ing kidding me...this place is a disgrace. Our family suffered the loss of our baby and all we wanted was to have him home with us...they should be ashamed of themselves. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Yeah, after a bunch of calls and yelling the lazy employee took the 10 minute trip over the bridge to bring our baby home. I just helped a friend make funeral arrangements. Everyone was very kind and professional. Plenty of parking across the street in their lot. While funerals are expensive, I would say that Scamardella charged probably 35 percent less than another neighborhood facility. Joann, the owner was hands on and very patient. read more
