I picked out a quart of oil off the shelf because it had a yellow sticker on it saying sale price 349 marked down from 699 When I got to the counter, they would not sell it to me for 349. They say that that sales sign is expired. I tried to explain to them that that is called bait and you can't leave a sign up telling you one prize and then when you get to the register, you changed the price on the customer All three of the women that were working behind the counter were unbelievably rude not willing to listen. So now you lose a customer, I will never go back. There's lots of alternatives so that's the end of that story. read more

I've been living in Scotts Valley for over 2 1/2 years now. I always love coming here because the moment you come through the door there is always someone asking if they can help you find something. They either direct you to the item you are looking for or tell you what isle to find it in. They have saved me so much time and frustration by offering to help with the item or project I went in there for. I also love the new-ish layout of their registers. There always used to be so much confusion and frustration about where the line starts. Now they have a TJ Max approach where they have a clear check out entrance LOADED with lots of goodies to add to your list of items as you wait in the line. So well laid out. The paint department is the worst. Teenagers working who can't get the paint right then when you come back they act like complete jerks. I love this store for everything else but won't ever get my paint there again. I spoke with the manager and she was great so I will still continue to shop at this cool hardware store. read more

I don't usually leave reviews but this morning we received a telephone call at 8:30 am, from Lisa (a manager of some sort), accusing us of returning a flex pipe that had been cut. We never cut the item, it was never used. It did spend a few weeks rolling around the back seat waiting to be returned. It might have gotten bent. I returned the item the night before with no issues. The item was only $17.99. She used our phone number given as a loyalty member to accuse and berate us for cutting the item. I was then asked to come back to the store where she forced me to pay for the flex pipe. She never apologized for the early morning call (on a holiday) or accusing us of cutting the item. This is really poor customer service. The entire experience was very embarrassing and degrading. I am left feeling hurt and quite shaken. read more

Oof I used to love this place. I am a long time customer. I was accused of stealing today because I carried my own soil to my car instead of asking one of your staff to help me and tying up your resources. I showed the worker that came up to my car window to accost me the receipt and he still couldn't see plain as day that I had paid for two bags of their Ace brand of soil. Here's the receipt- I guess I will take my business to Plantworks and Home Depot from now on because even if someone was watching the security cameras they would have seen me inside paying PRIOR TO TAKING THE SOIL TO MY CAR MYSELF. I just tried dropping into the Scotts Valley, Scarborough a couple of minutes before closing. Even though the open sign was still on, they already had the entry door locked. As I peered through the windows, the employees just stared at me. I only needed one thing and knew exactly where it was. I would've been in and out in less than 90 seconds. I would like to give this store a better rating because the employees are nice, but my experience buying key caps was absolutely unacceptable. They have a big binder where they keep all the different sku numbers to scan- I get it, it's for inventory purposes. However, to keep a customer waiting for 15 minutes while three people try to figure out the sku number for a 79 cent key cap is ridiculous! Finally I said skip those two- I have other errands to run! There was no- I am so sorry, I will charge you for them and we can figure out the inventory info later. It was more important to make sure they properly recorded the sale of two 79 cent key caps than it was to keep a customer! And for those of you who are thinking- why didn't you ask for the manager? She was already involved! Sad, but true. I will be spending my money elsewhere. read more

Best Hardware Store I Have Seen! I live in Campbell but always try to use this store as a primary as I am in the area weekly. The staff has always been pleasant, attentive, knowledgeable and polite. The store carries things that other ACE stores do not carry, such as lighted magnifying glass, specialty silicone paste, and unusual fans (very reasonable). I am sure this is due to the large size of the store. I get many unusual chrome hardware for my custom motorcycle, I can't get at other stores, specifically different styles and sizes. I read a couple of the bad reviews (which effects this store from being a 5 Star instead of 4) and honestly, I think the review is not objective. ACE management does reply with apologies and effort to make it right. Every review I do (at least I believe) is fair and objective. If I give a business 5 Stars, they deserve it. Went to this Ace Hardware Store to buy a couple of things with my husband. As I entered this store there were selling plants & flowers near the front entrance. There were a bunch of burgundy/purple coleus plants that grab my attention since there was a yellow sign that said $3.49 & elsewhere sold at $3.99 so I grabbed one. At the register the young girl charged me 4.99 for it & I told her about the price I saw outside. She said it's 4.99 so I went outside to grab the sign & showed her. She called another young girl that I guess was in charge of gardening. She looked at the sign that I had in my hand & she said "Oh that's not our sign, I can't honor it." And I told her "That's the sign that was stuck on front of these plants. And as a consumer, we call that false advertisement". Neither of the girls cared or asked management what could be done for the customer. I won't be coming to this Ace again! They brag they are superior in Customer Service, well experience that here. They obviously don't see what they are placing as the selling price: FALSE ADVERTISING!! That's for sure. I bought a propane tank and found out it wasn't working. Came back and politely said I had a problem with the tank and a guy, a short ginger with a beard, took the tank from me, brought it to the back for 5 minutes, and curtly returned it to me and said "Nothing wrong with it!" I took it home and fiddled most of my evening with it. I finally contacted the propane distributor and they said, after testing it, that it was clogged, apologized, and replaced it. After wasting all that time?!?! In my opinion this store doesn't stand by its merchandise. Better to go someplace else where they are polite and realize that you are the customer! read more

If I could post zero stars I would. It's my understanding that this is a family owned and ran business. Moreover, that most of the stores are now ran by female Scarborough, ( the next generation), well all I can say for sure is the experiences I have had not once not twice but three times... which is more than enough for me, to be treated like crap. Finding someone to assist is easy, however, the air... attitude if you will is like your doing them a favor. I' like to consider myself seasoned rather than elderly... either way, I have spent a few cart full of cash there. NOT ONCE was help out offered. The last time I decided to give this trap another chance I came face to face with a manager.. I believe " the top dog" brown curly haired young female. She was so rude, walked around with a scowl on her face, not approachable and yelled at me and another customer from across the check stand about merchandise we were looking at.. I guess they weren't prepared to put it out on the floor. And that's my fault. It's is not an enjoyable experience shopping at this store... at all. For that reason, my family nor I will never spend another dime in your store. Here is some unsolicited advice... go to Ben Lomond store and take your entire staff and keep your mouths closed and just observe how customer service is offered in that store, watch how receptive there customers are, it's really an enjoyable experience. This is the closest ace near my home. Twice I have tried to take something back to this store and the result has been the same--sour grapes employees. One was a young woman on the weekend in charge and today was a middle age woman--both need a lesson in customer service. In this day of COVID -19 keeping my tags is not an option for me. The middle aged woman wearing here mask below her nose was unbelievable as was the previous young girl--at least this one took back the items in a scowling sort of way. Although she had a cough don't know the circumstances but definitely should not be around the public, wearing her mask below her nose. After she finally credited me and I purchased other items. I was putting them into my bag as she stood there--I apologized to the man standing behind me for taking so long and she finally said I will be right with you sir. The men who have waited on me in the store are lovely--it is very sad my gender whom I've encountered are not. Yet the Scarborough Lumber and Garden on the other side of town can't do enough to help you. Possibly there is a lesson to be learned. read more

So I go in to look for some outdoor green waste bags and I have my hands full from my previous shopping adventures in King's Village. A customer service man leads me to the correct aisle (instead of having me wander aimlessly through the store) and then a customer service lady, who was drinking a cup of coffee and on her break, actually carries the bags to the check out counter for me - that made such a huge impression on me. What a great help since I was struggling to carry my purse, my kid and other bags of stuff. Awesome customer service! It's amazing how this store is so well organized and always has someone asking if you could use any help. This last week I've worked a lot with Thomas who has been extremely helpful and kind in explaining how and what to use to properly do the small projects I've been avoiding while encouraging me at the same time. He is like a family member I wish I had. It looks like other people feel the same way as I've noticed other regular customers who are also are there to work with him. I went in today to buy epoxy. I'm a local contractor, and I use a lot of this stuff. It's the Devcon two-part epoxy that has a tip that mixes the stuff as you apply it. It's a great product! Anyway, I bought three packages at around $7.50 each. At the job I discovered that one of the tubes had gone bad. One chamber was perfectly clear, while the other was milky white. It was obviously bad. I took it back to the store to exchange it, and immediately started getting grief from the cashier. She wanted PROOF that it was bad, so I showed her the tube. The thing is, she doesn't know what it is supposed to look like... so she called for back-up. I imagine it was a manager. She actually didn't know any more about the glue than the cashier did. What she (the manager) finally ended up saying was "there is nothing wrong with it, but if he wants to return it, let him." Now, it is one thing to make a snide comment about a customer behind his back after he has left the store, but another thing to say it right in front of me! I buy a lot of materials every month, and I try to buy from local stores... This one is definitely off my list! If returning a bad tube of glue is such a big problem, what is the place good for. They have lost my business. read more

I love this store. It's a good balance of everything- the hardcore tools and whatnot that I find out I need and struggle to use, as well as cute paints and even decor! Every time I have been there, someone from the staff has helped me to get what I need, and they have always had just what I needed. I have had paints matched to perfection, bought hoses, spigots, screwdrivers- it seems like they have everything and I am sure that if they didn't they would tell you where to find it. read more

Staff and store are great. The products are more 'meh'. I tend to find that most Ace labeled products are of inferior quality and don't last. To deal with that I pick non plastic components whenever possible and make sure I keep the receipt for a quick and painless exchange or return. They do carry pellets (+1 star) and the staff ALWAYS carry's them out and helps load them. read more
