I have been going to this store for several years. For a hardware store in Ben Lomond, they carry quite a few items to do small projects. However, I won't be returning after yet another issue with personnel. For quite some time, I learned that trying to buy paint there is difficult, because the lady in the paint department was very rude and seemingly disliked her job. There are a few employees who are very helpful. Yesterday, I was waiting with a cart to pay, there was one person being helped by the only cashier. I was the only person waiting behind that transaction. As several people came through their strangely laid out checkout area, a cashier came over and she saw me and then said She can help the next person in line. This guy behind me steps ahead of me and put his item on the counter. I said, "really?" Then she acted like she didn't know. The line, and I started getting into somewhat of a verbal altercation. Then the guy acted like he didn't see me there. He finally said, oh well you can go ahead, I told him to just go ahead, that I'm used to this "me first" society. I went to the back of the store and asked if I could check out there. I was told no. So I left the cart with the items that took me a bit of time to shop for, telling him I'll just go to Home Depot. Then while leaving the parking lot, another person from "the line," started say things to me. We had words and then I left. Much of the staff is not very helpful at all, and they are rude, making it an uncomfortable place. Their prices reflect the convenience for trying to support local business. read more

The first part (Part I) of this review is intended for fellow consumers. Be aware of your rights as a consumer and know when a business is committing fraudulent consumer practices, and I encourage you to utilize the law only as a last resort. Unfortunately, Scarborough was provided that opportunity and forwent it in favor of a measly $350 item. To me, the value of a business's reputation is worth substantially more. My reputation in this community is worth more, at least. This brings me to Part II, which is intended for the owners of the business. Part I On Saturday, August 28, 2021, I purchased one chainsaw, STIHL MS 251, retail price $349.99 from the Scarborough Home Lumber Center located in Ben Lomond, California. The retailer provided me with a tutorial of how to use the saw, including safety, for approximately 30 minutes. I also obtained documentation from them as evidence that they showed me exactly how to use the machine and signed said documentation on the date of purchase. I also purchased safety equipment, oil, and gas for the saw, which was recommended by the salesperson. I indicated to the salesperson I wished to cut through a fallen tree on my property and that I would be using it for that purpose specifically. The saw worked for about 20 minutes before stalling upon taking it to the worksite. At this point I was unable to restart it, and returned it back for troubleshooting. After disassembling the item with a screwdriver, the salesperson was able to restart it. Upon taking it home, it stalled again after about 20 or 30 seconds and would not restart. Thinking the unit may have overheated, I waited until the next day, August 29, 2021, to return the item a second time. This time, the salesperson ran a pressure diagnostic and determined it was not functioning properly and would need repair. I was told to come back in about a week. Approximately a week later, on Monday, September 6, 2021, I attempted to obtain a refund for the saw, since it was still not functioning and I was given no ETA on when it would be ready. The event that is described that follows was captured on my iPhone, which was discreetly in my shirt pocket the entire time. Upon asking for a refund, I was denied it by the salesperson. I then asked for the company's information for the purpose of legal correspondence to initiate a Small Claims dispute. I was denied this information by the salesperson and told aggressively to wait outside the store, which I did. At the store entrance I was then provided with my defective chainsaw in several pieces in a box. I am asked for a refund of the purchase price of this item, $349.99. I was not provided with the information I requested at any point during the exchange, which consisted of several questions. 1. Address of the business for legal correspondence and exact name of the business to address the claim. 2. Ownership structure of the business. 3. Store manager's full name. 4. Date 5. Signature of store representative 6. Serial number of the item that was sold to me. Rather, I was told to leave and I was followed outside the store with an angry man yelling at me close behind (which can be heard on the video). After waiting outside the store a few minutes, the representative came to the front door with a box that had the chainsaw in it, in several pieces, and the notebook with the questions I asked them politely to fill out, which were left blank and ignored. At this point I then left the store parking lot without the information I requested and with my defective chainsaw in several pieces in a box. I was told I would not be allowed back in the store for attempting to obtain a refund for the defective item. During the exchange it was clear that they would not permit me due process of the law. Subsequently, I filed complaints with the following regulatory bodies: 1. Better Business Bureau, 2. Department of Consumer Affairs, 3. Federal Trade Commission, and 4. Santa Cruz County District Attorney. In addition to these complaints I sent a Demand Letter to the business. You can find templates for Demand Letters online easily. This is used as evidence in a Small Claims case to demonstrate you attempted to obtain the stolen funds prior to initiating a Small Claims case. I paid $568 to your store on 8/28/21 in total, yet I was treated like I was total scum by your staff, who used foul language and, to quote one staff member as he followed me out of the store, "I don't want to see your face again!" I wanted to get my son a Husqvarna Chain Saw and decided to give the business to local Ace in Ben Lomond. Gordon, the cranky old saw guy has wasted 3 round trips from Los Gatos to Ben Lomond. He hasn't fixed the saw even though the Husqvarna website is clear on the fix. He is treating me and my son as though we are clueless idiots. Now, after he upsold me on the saw, I am looking for another dealer to work on the saw. What a bummer. read more

Great Husqvarna shop, Mark is an amazingly honest, straight-shooting, great guy, who got me into a brushcutter that was kind to my budget and exceedingly mean to my scotch broom problem. There was a model number issue that I wouldn't have caught, but they caught it for me, and called me and owned up and fixed it, and gave me a gift card for my trouble. A less ethical store would've just let things skate. So pleased with that. The paint/primer recommendations I've gotten there really saved my bacon in my bathroom. I consider Scarborough Ace to be my homeowner's best friend. They give solid recommendations, solid prices, and they treat me like their neighbor.. which I am. The other reviewer who's kvetching about people actually BEING THERE TO SERVE YOU strikes me as hilarious. I'm totally good with with this. I know absolutely nothing about plumbing, but with their help I was able to fix a leak in my sink for under $3, and less than 5 minutes in the store. (took quite a bit longer to fix it, but that was my own lack of knowledge :P) Nothing better then that. read more

I've been going to the Ace in Ben Lomond for several years now. I will drive by other hardware stores on my way there because no one beats their customer service. Every single time I've been in the store, within 2-3 min or walking in, someone will approach me and ask if I need help with anything. For a period of about 5 years, I did 99% of the home repairs. Whenever I needed supplies or advice, someone at Ace was there. I have never felt a condescending attitude from any of their employees because I am a woman but have always been treated with the same respect as any of the male customers. Great customer service. Large selection. Employees who have the skills and knowledge to be super helpful in whatever you're doing. You definitely need to stop in and check this place out! read more

You know those tension shower-curtain rods that you twist to install? Mine stopped working, right before Christmas. Wouldn't budge, so I threw it out and went to ACE to replace it. I didn't know how old it was and I didn't have the receipt. Adrian was super helpful. He replaced the rod for free! Even without a receipt. I have an ACE rewards card, so he just used that. This is a great little home town hardeware store. They do a great job stocking merchandise for the DYI or contractor. Full service lumber yard and a little BBQ and garden center too. The owners and employees work hard to keep you coming back and there is always someone on hand with some know how when a question pops up. read more

Amazing shop. The employees know a lot. In a small mountain town, you need a good hardware store, this one is GREAT! Love the plant section. All the tools and odds and ends you would expect. Prices are high, but you save on gas. The owner is a very nice man and they donate to all community functions. read more

One stop shopping. Great store, friendly and helpful staff, not too pricey. As far as the big three go (Ace, Home Depot, Lowes) this store is right up there on top. If you want super high quality and expensive specialized tools or hardware etc, you don't want to be shopping at the big three anyway. You need to go to specialized stores. read more

Generally I love this store, and most people who have worked there a while know me. My father and I over the years bought a lot through this store. Issue is the mask, my last one got messed up. So I wore a tshirt over my nose. The told me no, told them last time I was there they did not have any. They handed me a tiny piece of fabric I could see through and said $3 or $3.50. Told them it was thinner than my t shirt. I asked for the manager. The guy from the paint area came over and started in with an attitude. I saw the manager and turned to him as he walked up. He was talking to me. So I shh'd the other guy, got told me BETTER NOT shh him again. I told one don't ever threaten me again. Told me they will never let me in the store again. I will shh you if I need to I told him. The manager was there so paint kid finally left. I talk to the manager who calmly told it is the law now. HE was good as always. But I think I'll start taking my business else where, which I guess it ok, since I'm not buying as much. But it is a shame they hire and allow punks to work there. First one I notice there. Generally most have been really nice, the new kids are mostly blah it's a job. Sad to see a great store go down hill. read more

Went there this morning to get 2 new chains for my new Husqvarna 445. Good help from Tim. He also explained to me the differences between using regular gasoline and using the premix that Ace provides for the Husqvarna. His advice was very helpful and I will continue to use the premix. He also explained to me the problems that I will have with the saw if I do not use it often whether it is the model 440 or the 445. Very helpful advice. read more

Outstanding customer service. I needed some lumber for a big raised garden bed. Took in a list of all the lengths of boards that I needed, planning to find the most economical combination of boards to buy. These guys virtually did my project for me! They cut all the boards to my required lengths at no extra charge. I was promised delivery at 8:30 Saturday morning and they showed up at 8:20. All I had to do was to assemble it! I moved to "the woods" 10 years ago and didn't know a chainsaw from a circular saw. Mark has been so helpful over the years helping me with my tree cutting needs and recommending products. Also, when you walk in, there is always someone asking you if you need help... Unlike "Home Depot" or "Lowes", the employees of Scarborough are very helpful and can find someone there to answer even the most obscure questions. One time I had a valve break on my gas bbq and I brought it in to see if they had a replacement. They did not, but one of the guys, sorry can't remember his name, but he rebuilt it from parts they sold in the store. Amazing service. read more

My slow cooker cord melted on the toaster, and I had dinner started. My freezer was broken, as well as my dishwasher, so it was one of those "last straw" deals. I took the slow cooker into ACE, and Carlos replaced the cord! It was a rather complicated process, but he saw it through, and everyone was positive and kind. I've never had a bad experience at Ben Lomond ACE, and they've been very friendly and willing to help me with all kinds of hassles like this. read more

A super frustrating experience. They are listed as a distributor for Metacrylics products. I call ahead and asked if they kept it in stock, and they said they did. I drove 45 minutes to their store, and they only had the primer. I was asked to call back on Tuesday to order the color coat. When I called back on Tuesday, I was told that they were discontinuing the product line, and special ordering from them could cost $2000 above the cost of the actual product. This is patently ridiculous, since the Metacrylics facility is located in Gilroy, about 90 minutes away. You could Uber the 20 gallons of product from one place to the other for $200. Most frustrating is they they neglected to mention this when I was physically there, and essentially misled me in order to unload product they were trying to remove from their warehouse. They had no intention of ever providing the color coat. Dishonest. read more
