While visiting Red Wing, Minnesota, my friend and I stopped for a Starbucks coffee. The barista was incredibly friendly and we told her we were visiting from Chicago. She immediately recommended that we try Scarlet Kitchen & Bar and get the pretzel. Scarlet is located in the historic St. James Hotel in beautiful downtown Red Wing. The restaurant is large and inviting, but it was a lovely night, so we opted to sit on their patio wherever had a view of the town. Our server was attentive and friendly. Of course, we ordered Amy's Famous Pretzel, and with beer cheese and garlic butter dipping sauces, it was absolutely delicious--more like a pretzel bread. I ordered the Mississippi Pot Roast Sandwich, and that hit the spot, too. A simple Panna Cotta with a berry sauce was a light, and tasty finish to our meal. If you want a great meal, in a beautiful restaurant with attentive service, give Scarlet Kitchen & Bar a try. It will not disappoint. read more

Went here on a Sunday night for a fancier dinner with our group. We had a reservation, so we were seated right away out on the patio. It was a little warm in the sun, but otherwise great outdoor weather and provided entertainment for the kids to look at the train when it went past. Our server was pretty quick to come get our drink order and we also puts the kids order and appetizer in right away. Our specialty cocktail and mocktail drinks came out pretty quick and all were quite refreshing. For the appetizer we got the Brussels sprouts with the horseradish mustard dressing and they were a hit. We even saved the dressing to use for the fries and sandwiches we ordered for the main. The kids burgers came out shortly after the appetizer which was useful to keep them entertained. It was pretty much an adult portion size and a well cooked burger. The only issue was that it took a while longer for the adult food to come out, so the kids were all done eating by the time we got our food. We got the Scarlett Salmon, Cubano, wild Mahi, Swedish stew, and pot roast sandwich. The salmon had a nice crust to it, but unfortunately for me, that also meant it was pretty salty. The couscous, watermelon radish, and chimichurri that accompanied were all very tasty though and the chimichurri did have a good kick of spice to it. The Cubano had good flavor and the horseradish mustard was a great accompaniment. The pot roast sandwich had decent flavor but was a little dry. The Mahi was the more successful fish entree and the Swedish stew also got great reviews. For dessert we couldn't make a decision, so we got the dessert trio which was a triple chocolate fudge cake, orange blossom and raspberry cake, and passion fruit panna cotta. The chocolate cake was a little dry for me, the raspberry cake was moist with a nice summer flavor, and the Panna cotta was the standout. A perfect light option to end the meal, and it came in a pretty cup. Overall they did have decent food and portion sizes were pretty good given their higher prices. Brunch review Atmosphere was nice. Service was overall good for a group of 8. Food: we loved the unique menu options. Biscuits and gravy with peperoncini gravy and yuzu blueberry basil pancakes - we were so excited about the delicious twists on the classics. The flavors were really good. The only reason we were a bit disappointed was the textures, the pancakes were overcooked and not our favorite texture and the biscuits were a bit dry/crumbly. Drinks: were awesome. It comes with 3 cuban crostinis topped with mozzerella, capicola, peach salsa, pickled blueberries, and basil olive oil.The peach salsa would lead you to expect a sweet flavor. However, it was NOT sweet. It was refreshing and the combination of the toppings had a delightful flavor profile. We also had the Crab Cakes. It comes with 3 cakes that are truly stuffed with crab, not all breading. They are topped with a generous serving of tzatziki sauce. I loved trying a new sauce, rather than your traditional remoulade sauce. I would definitely get both again. We went to the Scarlet Kitchen and Bar for our anniversary mainly for the atmosphere. Unfortunately after eating here, that was the only thing it had going for it. Upon our arrival the host didn't acknowledge us for about 2.5 minutes and was obviously frustrated by the computer/technical issues. We smiled politely and shared we were here to check in. He sat us in the worst seat in the house between 4 booths and then walked away. There was no acknowledgement of our anniversary. We also had a margarita that unfortunately tasted more like water than lime juice. Very disappointing. Our waiter was even less attentive and we received way below average care. We both ordered the steak medium and were told it came with an aoli garlic sauce. The steak came out and was overcooked--well done, and it was served with a garlic horseradish sauce not aoli. Unfortunately my wife and I had waited over 40 minutes for our food so we didn't even share that the steak was overcooked. That is our fault, but the waitress didn't check in for over 15+ minutes after our food arrived. There was only one mention of our anniversary when the waitress came at the end of the meal to say a dessert is on us so please pick one from the menu. Unfortunately, again the dessert that we had was really dry and disappointing. Again another series of unfortunate events when we got the Bill the dessert was on there we had to ask for it to be removed. I very rarely leave reviews and it's only when very disappointed or extremely elated. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone unfortunately. Very disappointing especially for an anniversary meal. We will be making it up by going somewhere in the cities. read more

I tried stopping in here on a Friday afternoon at 2PM ( so not a prime dining time), and the wait for a table was over an hour. So my advice is to come here with a reservation. I was disappointed, because I really wanted to give this place a try since I was in town. I'll have to plan ahead next time. The food must be good here; the place was packed. TIP: there was construction going on, and it was hard to find how to navigate and find the restaurant. We ended up walking around two or three sides of the hotel, and then were able to enter through the parking garage, and then had to walk up a level, and then walk around the lobby and to the back to find it. Having the front of the hotel roped off from construction made finding the restaurant quite the scavenger hunt! read more

As I arrived at the Saint James Hotel I found my way going up some stairs from the parking garage and ended up at Scarlet. The outdoor area is beautiful as it overlooks the river and train depot. I made my way to the bar and was taken care of first by Elliot who was a fabulous bartender making sure my cut never ran dry. I later arrived and the hostess Aubree was fantastic. After a long day, it was great to have someone lighten the mood. She assisted me and made my time at Scarlet memorable. Gabby the bartender was fantastic later that evening she went over the menu and recommendations and I was in the mood for local wine. So she assisted me in picking something enjoyable. Kate who was also behind the bar from time to time made the evening enjoyable with her kindness and knowledge. I had a fabulous evening at Scarlet thanks to all the amazing staff. The next day I stopped for breakfast and Kelsey was my server. I ordered the benedict and and glass of orange juice and a Prosecco. The serving size was very large and I could only eat half. Great patio. That's about all I can say. It took way too long to get our food and drinks. My husband and I split a jerk chicken sandwich and when we bit into it, it was refrigerator cold on the inside and we both spit out our bites. We told our server who offered a replacement, but we didn't have time for that. To be fair my husband said "you don't have to take it off our bill" but we didn't eat any of it. After speaking with her manager, she offered dessert. We didn't want dessert. I feel they should have taken off the charge regardless of what my husband said. We didn't eat it - it was their mistake - and our meal cost $75 with 2 drinks and an app, so when the bill arrived it was surprising to see they left the charge on. I won't go back. I equate this to poor service and worse management. It wasn't even busy. read more

A special Thanksgiving buffet brought us down here to celebrate the hotel's 150th anniversary. We had reservations for dinner Wed. night. We both decided on the barbeque pork sandwich. It was on Texas toast which I ended up not eating , good thing. It's also on top of a slaw that I removed. What's left a big clump of pork in the sauce. That's all I needed. She also brought me some ranch for dipping, that was great too. We both got salads for an upcharge with blue cheese. We first started with a large cup of chicken wild rice soup that we shared. One of the best I've had. I'm getting my own next time. We wanted to splurge with the celebrating. They offered a chai cake with marshmallow frosting. That's why I'm glad I didn't eat the toast. A huge to die for piece that we shared. They had a delicious iced tea as well. Day after Fri. for breakfast before the trip home. We were treating our friend for his birthday and he lives in town. I'm glad we ran early and beat the crowd it was filling up when we left at 11. What was ordered, the loaded bowl, big boot, and eggs benedict for me. Everybody dove in and loved what they got. The perfect benny came with potatoes that I couldn't finish. We all got a nice rich coffee and they indulged me with heavy cream. It needed it. Service both days was great. The charcuterie board, which I've ordered at several different restaurants, was excellent. A super nice blend of different cheeses and meats and sweet. $25 seems steep, but it well can serve four people as an appetizer, or more than enough for one person as an entrée. There is some street parking, but as this was a sub-zero January night with snow on the ground, we drove into the attached parking garage. It is not a straightforward parking garage but labyrinthine, requiring low speeds and care; judging by the scrapes on the ceiling, more people should pay attention to their vehicle height, too! We found a spot and had a very short, cold walk to an elevator. Scarlet Kitchen is on the first floor. My husband arranged this dinner date for the two of us on my birthday. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, making a point of saying "happy birthday." Our server was Anna. She took great care of us the whole time. We ordered some drinks and the cheese curds to start. These curds were fantastic with a perfect hot squeak. The Sturdiwheat batter was delicious. The housemade cranberry dip was a nice change from what other restaurants serve with curds. My husband ordered the steak and fries. I snagged one of his fries--wow, was it good! Strip isn't my husband's favorite cut, but the meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned for his preference. I ordered the salmon, which was served on pearl barley with vegetables. Everything was delicious--a meal that felt indulgent yet healthy at the same time. Because it was my birthday, the dessert was included for free. I had my choice of the chocolate cake, creme brulee, and hummingbird cake, and I went for the chocolate. While we were waiting for that, my husband requested a whisky listed in the menu, but he was soon informed that they were out. So, the cake. Let me tell you, as a passionate home baker, this thing was GOOD. I could tell it was made fresh in-house. The chocolate and cherries were vibrant. Great frosting. Sweet but not overkill. Seriously, people should go here just for cake. Just as I was reaching for my coat, our server Anna returned. The whisky had been found to be in stock after all, and she offered us a serving on the house. Wow. We sat and enjoyed that before braving the cold. This ended up being the perfect birthday dinner. Local people don't seem to go there often because of the prices and I for one was totally unimpressed with the offerings you could easily go to liberty's restaurant and get the same food for a third of the price. read more

Were with some friends that wanted to check out the St. James Hotel and we were feeling like an afternoon pick-me-up so we wandered into Scarlet. We were all intrigued by the mimosa list. I ended up having the watermelon one (called Worx). We were all also a little hungry and got cups of the wild rice soup, which was fabulous. The only real disappointment was the amount of time it took to get our bill and pay. We had been done with drinks and food (and had indicated this to the server) for about 20 minutes before we could actually settle up and leave. Called to make a reservation for later this morning for my family... someone answered the phone and told me to wait so I did, then a different lady came on the phone and had a really rude attitude from the start. I explained how many adults and kids and she was so nasty to me and disrespectful. She said she can't accommodate at one table with kids so I asked for two tables and she again was rude, sighed and said she would not split us up. I asked what time was the next available for us to be accommodated and she refused to give me a time. I was trying to problem solve and this lady was not trying to help whatsoever she'd rather lose a returning customer. What a nasty way to speak to people. We were there before a Sheldon Theatre show so I suspect that could have been a reason for a busy crowd. I chose a glass of Malbec wine and the salmon for my entree. Husband had a cup of wild rice soup and the shepard's pie. I loved my meal. The salmon had a slightly charred outer layer but was perfectly cooked inside. It was served with pilaf mixed with veggies. It was light and very tasty. Husband loved the wild rice soup. He gets this often in restaurants so he knows a good one when he tastes it. He thought the Shepard's pie was good but would have liked it better if the lamb was more chunkier in the dish and not just part of the stew. Service was good. The entire staff was helping each other out because it was so busy. I want to come back in the daylight and check out the beautiful river views. read more

They had a table ready when we got there and had us served pretty quick - great wine and beer options and phenomenal drinks. The food menu was bomb, really cool unique dishes. We started with the spinach artichoke dip which was to die for, the naan pieces were delicious and buttery. Their brussel sprouts pack a ton of flavor. I was between the Mediterranean bowl and the shepherds pie, and went with the latter - it was a great take on the dish. I'm obsessed with polenta, and they made it perfect and crispy on the outside with a delicious, soft center. It was packed full of veggies too. I will absolutely be back when I'm in town.
