Mouse feces found on pillow in Star Gap cabin

MICE INFESTATION Our experience with Scenic Cabin Rentals was far from ideal. Where to begin... I'll start with the biggest issue. We were worried when reading the pest disclaimer while attempting to get settled. We figured at worst it was warning to be mindful of closing doors and keeping food sealed and stored. Unfortunately, we were so incredibly wrong. We stayed for two nights and quickly realized the motivation behind putting a pest disclaimer, removing liability from the rental agency when they are well aware of the severity of the pest issue (multiple sonic pest traps/deterrents in each room indicated this). To paint a chilling picture of our experience, we could hardly go 5 minutes without seeing a mouse each night after dark. There were multiple mice spotted in the bedroom and kitchen area, which makes me think the STAR GAP cabin (and likely others) had a mouse population greater than 10. It was so bad that we witnessed a mouse crawl out from behind the control panel on the stove. We likely only got a collective 8 hours of sleep out of fear that mice would make their way into the sleeping quarters (see photo). TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE: We informed the rental agency of the nightmare of a situation and our concerns for other paying customers being exposed to this unsanitary environment. And we were told, in an uncaring/unkind fashion, "It's a cabin in the woods, we expect there to be mice." Attached is a photo of mouse feces we found ON OUR PILLOW... To no concern of the rental office worker with whom we spoke. Please do yourself a favor and go with another rental agency.

We had three families staying at the same time and there at least two beds to spare in every room. Not to mention the three couches down stairs. The place had some of its own board games so the kids got to learn a few new games like pool, mancula, and apples to apples. There was a fire pit,hot tub, and a pretty nice grill out side. The whole place was built on a ledge that overlooked the tree filled hills of the red river gorge region . There was also a huge wrap around porch. It was cool but be careful leaning on the edge there might be a few places it's weak. Draw backs... there really weren't many. The first draw back was the place is set up a long steep stairway. It looks small until you are trying to bring your groceries and suit cases up it. Still it's not a big deal if you aren't elderly. The other draw back was the shower, it had a little mold in the corners but over all it was a spacious bathroom with towels and working facilities. We have decided we will be returning to this place and we hope it will be as great as this weekend!

I noticed they use a tennis ball with Lavender Oil for fabric softener. Lavender Oil is used to keep bed bugs away! I also noticed mattress covers wrapped in plastic. This was a red flag and unfortunately I ignored being so excited to have this opportunity. I still accepted the position not knowing how bad the bed bugs were! I moved there in August 2020 where I AGAIN picked up bed bugs. They were even in my car and the rental trailer I leased. I purchased pesticide and worked very hard to get rid of the bed bugs. I am highly sensitive and allergic to bed bugs. I was bitten inside the cabins when cleaning. I tried to come to some kind of agreement for preventative measures with Johnathon Hicks. He had my internet connection turned off then pretended he didn't. Even telling me to unplug and reboot KNOWING it was disconnected. I was 16 miles off the grind all alone with no connection. I had to drive in town to make a call to him. He told me to call their advocate Sharon Keefe to talk the issue over regarding the bed bugs. He told me to call her that day bc she was leaving for vacation the next day. He told me to go back home and unplug to see if I would have a connection. Again, while he ALREADY knew he had it turned off. So I went back to town to call Sharon when he sent a text saying he knew Sharon already left for vacation and they hired someone else! I have NEVER known any employer who would be this cunning and DECEITFUL. Why not just tell me instead of lying and having me run around. He did it on purpose! What immaturity! I was devastated! I had to move again after uprooting my life for this job! I moved back and ever since been fighting bed bugs since August 2020! I have now lost 3 beds and couches and so much more. Jonathon Hicks has denied any issues with bed bugs and completely ignores me. I now have a visible manifestation of the bed bugs. They have spread from the basement (where my br is) to the upstairs. BEWARE of bed bugs and take preventative measures. They do not effect everyone the same. But with people like me who are very allergic are tormented by bites.

The cabin was clean and had lots of things we didn't expect (plenty of cooking utensils, dinnerware, dehumidifier, A/C, etc). The water pressure and hot water were excellent. There's a firepit close to the cabins. Unfortunately, we're city folk and weren't able to get the fire going. Maybe we should have YouTubed it! But it was nice that they had a storage tub full of chairs and a picnic bench. The entrance to the property can be easy to miss because it is at a steep grade, but Wendy and Craig emailed us very specific directions that we printed out and had no problems. Everything was great about our stay. Except for that wasp that wouldn't leave. We also booked a climbing tour through RRO. Dan was our guide and did an awesome job. Highly recommended if you are into climbing but don't have all the gear and/or experience to lead and set.

There is a small grill outside, but you need to bring your own charcoal. And bring all your own cooking supplies like oil, salt + pepper. I expected the bed to be bleh, but it was genuinely extremely comfy - and I'm high maintenance about mattresses. There's extra bedding in the closets too! Pros: * Great location--close to shops, restaurants and hiking trails, but tucked away enough that it feels private and secluded. * Customer service was very responsive whenever we reached out. * The property is beautifully decorated. The lighting and the cargo nets on the front of the captain's ship were especially fun and a big hit with my son. Cons: Captain's Quarters The Captain's Quarters, which includes the kitchenette and bathroom, is much smaller than it appears in the photos. I would estimate the actual living space to be only about 8-10 feet wide, excluding the bathroom and sleeping loft. While the listing photos accurately show there isn't a couch, it's worth noting that the only seating is a dining table with benches. If the weather keeps you indoors, there really isn't a comfortable place to relax other than sitting on a hard bench or lying on the bed. Ant Problem There appears to be an ongoing ant problem. We noticed ant traps under the sink, which suggests the owners are aware of the issue. Unfortunately, there were ants in the sleeping loft of the Captain's Quarters, and both nights we woke up with ants crawling on us. Safety Concerns Our primary reason for booking this property was the cliffside room, but this is where we encountered our biggest concerns. On our first night, my son noticed that the bedroom door to the cliffside room did not have a lock (see attached photos). I contacted the property the following morning, and they responded quickly, offering us the other cliffside room since it was unoccupied that night. While I appreciated their prompt response, it only partially resolved the issue. The replacement room did have a lock, but it could only be locked from the inside because of the sliding glass door design. As a single woman traveling with a child, I did not feel secure knowing the room could not be locked when we left or adequately secured from outside access. Additionally, access to the cliffside rooms is not truly restricted. The "gate" is essentially just a screen door on a dirt path, with no fencing on either side. Anyone could simply step around it and continue directly to the cliffside cabins. Another serious safety concern was the ladder leading to the Grey Dancer cliffside room. The second-to-last rung on the upper left side appeared to have been completely cut through. It was a clean break that looked as though it had been cut with a saw, making the ladder feel unsafe to use. Because of these issues, we decided to end our vacation a day early. At 11:14 a.m., I notified the property that we were checking out one day ahead of schedule and asked whether a refund for the unused night would be possible. They responded within about 15 minutes, stating they could not issue a refund because their cleaning team had already left. Since standard checkout was at 11:00 a.m. and my request came only 14 minutes later, I was disappointed that there was no flexibility given the circumstances. Overall, while the property is beautiful and the location is excellent, the unresolved safety issues and ant problem outweighed the positives for us. We would not stay here again. If you're considering this property, one of the larger cabins without a cliffside room may be a better option. However, if secure accommodations are important to you, especially when traveling alone or with children, these issues are worth considering before booking.

BEWARE! In my…read moreopinion, the property managers are trying to take advantage of us. We moved an old weber charcoal grill from the yard to the porch so we could grill while it was raining. Now they are claiming we dug the grill out of the yard and that the grill is broken (complete b.s.) and that we are going to be charged $150 to replace a leg on it. An absolute money-grab, in my opinion. We left that grill exactly as we found it. EDIT: Here are two Instagram posts that clearly show the exact grill and cabin in question from February 2017 (Over five months prior to our visit). As you can plainly see, the grill is out of the ground! https://www.instagram.com/p/BQ8KQNMAIpk/?taken-at=378655077 https://www.instagram.com/p/BQ8J9X7A6o9/?taken-at=378655077 Also, the hot tub on the back deck shorted out (real safe) after the first night. We informed management and they seemingly made no effort to have it repaired for the remainder of our stay. The main road on the property has also collapsed on the side of a steep hill. It made me nervous about driving up the hill to our cabin. EDIT: You can see the sketchy, crumbling road in Google Maps, here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Cabins+of+Birch+Hollow/@37.8062502,-83.7497773,127m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x8843780ee189657f:0xab8ce7380a1f866f!8m2!3d37.805754!4d-83.749193 Zoom in on the Northern portion of the road that rings the property. The aerial view doesn't quite do it justice. An entire section of the road collapsed down the hill. Good luck to you if there are any issues that come up during your stay... I'd never consider renting from them again in my life.

It was through this search that we found the Birdsong cabin, managed by StayOver, in Slade, Ky. All in all, we were very happy with this cabin. It was clean, well stocked and generally as advertised. It ticked off all the boxes. I particularly loved the view from the patio. The management was also quick to respond when we had questions, such as what cooking utensils would be available in the kitchen. We had a couple of small hiccups, but each were quickly remedied. The entry code wasn't the code that given to us or the last four digits of my phone number, which I was also told it would be. But a quick call to the office fixed all of this. Also, we did not know ahead of time that there would be a one-room cabin in the backyard of this cabin. From the glass doors in front, we could see there was a bunkbed inside. We had wanted to get in the hot tub, which was not too far from this tiny house, but when we saw that the lights were on inside, we chose not to, lest a stranger come up and scare us. The only thing I would change would be including a mention of this house on the cabin listing. Again, these hiccups were small, and we would gladly stay at this cabin again or rent again from StayOver.

On the day of the reservation, 4 hours before our check-in time, I got a message stating that our reservation was being cancelled due to a leaking pipe at the cabin and they don't have anything else available to offer us. I called the company and spoke with Darah from StayOver. I explained to her that we are on the road already with family visiting from Canada (who drove to the US to spent the holiday with us) and asked her to help us find a some kind of solution or help us book another cabin in the area. The response was "sorry, we can't do anything for you, you figure it out yourselves." While we understand that issues can arise, the absence of accountability or any effort to resolve the situation made our experience with StayOver Cabin Rental extremely disappointing. We won't be booking with them again.
