One of the last of the old New York meat shops! They've got fresh meats, a great selection, and prices that won't break the bank. The meats and poultry are absolutely delicious. The butcher is super helpful and will tailor your order just how you want it. The owner is friendly and always ready to crack a joke. It's a cozy little shop that makes it feel special. I am sad to post this extremely negative review about a shop I have patronized for many years. Quite simply I was sent and charged for more than double the amount of brisket I needed. After the meat was delivered, I called to ask the proprietor if they had made a mistake sending me two large briskets. He was rude and dismissive, insisting he had sent the right amount and he knew how much I needed (20lbs of meat for 12 people)! Of course he was incorrect, I had an entire brisket left over. The whole experience was extraordinarily unpleasant and expensive. The proprietor told me (at quite a high decibel level) he did not care if I ever shopped there again. He doesn't need to worry -- there are lots of other options. read more

Just picked up my "supposedly fresh" turkey on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I ordered it from this high end ( supposedly!) meat market instead of buying a frozen turkey at the grocery store... and I pay a lot of more money for it... I got it home and it is semi-frozen... I called the store and the owner insisted it was just cold from sitting on a refrigerated truck. Not likely.... Very badddd service and I think they are just buying frozen turkeys and slapping their label on generic stuff you can buy in the grocery.... They can easily be your go-to spot to pick up some prime cuts of beef or other meats, and at the same time you can grab yourself a bite to eat! They offer a menu including stuff like burgers, fries, beer, and milkshakes. I've tried a few things cooked up there with a group I was with including their ribeye steak and I can say that it was all absolutely delicious! I know people who have ordered from Schatzie's for years and are incredibly loyal to his meat services. When I came to pick up my turkey Richard could not locate the earlier order so we started from scratch on a turkey that cost $61.42, for which I was billed. I never received anything for the $94 that was billed earlier. When I discussed this with Richard he said he would credit my credit card for $94 but he failed to do so. He later told me that he had tried several times to credit my credit card without success. He then said I should challenge the $94 charge and he would not dispute it, but when asked by the credit card company about this he did not agree to the disputed amount, and the credit card company is holding me responsible. I then warned Richard that if he did not send me a check for the amount of $94 in one month's time I would proceed with an action at small claims court. Since he did not send me a check I am filing with the court on line. read more

No, this review is mainly about Schatzie himself and his butcher pals. They are top notch. He can get you any cut of any animal within 24hr, if not immediately -- duck, venison, and boar are in stock more often than not -- and is happy to talk shop while his partners prep your special cut. Will deliver large orders. Kind of expensive, but not moreso than his downtown competitors (Ottomanelli's, Fleishers), and equally high quality. There is no comparison to Harlem Shambles -- I dig their style, but they focus exclusively on the Big 3 meats from a handful of small vendors. When you need variety & speed more than hipster vibe, you need to come down to Schatzie instead. read more

This review is of the BUTCHER SHOP and NOT the restaurant attached. I can make no assessment of the restaurant because I haven't tried it yet. Schatzie's is an excellent source for an always fresh variety of meats. I have had excellent whole chickens, stew beef, filet mignon, brisket, pork tenderloin, pork roasts, bacon, and both sweet and hot Italian sausages. All ranking among the best I have ever tried in New York in terms of freshness, quality and value. Schatzie and his staff always greet me with friendliness and efficiency. Before major holidays I do reserve my requests in advance of at least a couple of days. I am so happy to have this place right in my own neighborhood! Okay, so why not 5 stars? Certain related items, such as chicken stock, beef stock, veal stock, etc. are not the very best I have ever had. For me, that praise goes to Citarella, whose stocks (again, just my opinion) are much superior. If I liked Schatzie's stocks more I would give them 5 stars. As a bonus, however, there are a few non-meat related items at Schatzie's, such as a very fine grade of imported pearled barley and farro that I have found nowhere else in the city, and (in limited supply) canned tomatoes imported from Italy with the D.O.P. marking. These are not as easy to find as you might think. Most high-end groceries have them, but not all, and not all the time. Schatzie's is a neighborhood gem! This review is specifically for the butcher side. I wanted to make the perfect burger for dinner so I decided to head here after reading some reviews and news about Schatzies. I walked into an empty butcher which threw me off but I accepted it was a strange time of day. I explained to the man behind the counter that I wanted to make the perfect burger with an 80/20 combo of short rib and brisket. He obliged and got to grinding my 1.5lbs of meat in addition to cutting me some slices of their bacon. I was excited to cook this up when I got home. I started my beer cheese sauce, there in the fries, cut up our heirloom tomatoes, some pickles and pickled tomatoes as well. My patties were chilling in the fridge literally. I heated up my pan, threw on a small slice of unsalted butter to slightly grease the pan. I placed two patties down and they sizzled away. I threw on a dash of salt and pepper and let those babies sizzle away. I didn't have a thermometer to measure the internal temp so this was a guessing game. Once I flipped the patties, I put on some slices of gruyère cheese, sizzle a little more, covered the pan to let that cheese melt and cook a little more. Put those babies on some fresh toasted brioche buns from Eli's.... We kept it simple. We wanted to taste the meat instead of dressings and everything else. Bottom line, BEST burger Ive ever made and I'm chalking it up to the meat from Schatzies. We inhaled them. And we will be back for more meat soon!!! read more

I just moved back to Manhattan after 10 years in LA and was amazed to find Schatzie, this wonderful old fashioned butcher shop with really excellent meats and poultry within walking distance of my new apartment. The Berkshire pork is outstanding, the steak tender and tasty and the chicken as well. In addition, Schatzie stocks an interesting array of sausages that changes from time time, to get the best of what's current, whether your looking for weisswurst or andouille or Italian. And if you want something they don't have, they will order it for you. I dont buy meat anywhere else now. read more

On thanksgiving we ordered two fully cooked turkeys as well as a tray for 30 people of sweet potatoes and stuffing And gravy. Picked up on Wednesday . We never got the stuffing or sweet potatoes and label on the turkeys said "fully cooked "called two hours later and Schatzie said he knew they forgot to give us the the of sweet potatoes and sufffing and gravy and we would be credited on Monday on my charge. On thanksgiving we heated the turkeys at 375 degrees for one hour Guests arrived and turkeys after being carved were bloody raw. I had enough food to serve my 30 people lots of sides 10 pound salmon and lasagne. We were so upset not to have thanksgiving without turkeys and did not have an additional 3 hours to cook them since our guests arrived at 5 to eat dinner. I called that day when the items were left out and they told me to call on Monday to remind them to credit me which I did. Hey said not problem and proceeded to tell them about the uncooked turkeys and they said they would credit me for the whole amount. Well it is not 4 weeks later and my bank is in a dispute with them since they haven't given us our credit and I have called 7 times and they still have not taken care of this. If I could give 0 stars I would, the second I walked in with my service dog, the old guy in chair at the back of the store began YELLING at me for my dog, demanding papers and saying "yeah they are all now, I have one at home". My dog has done an internship at Disney when she was 5 months old and I have trained service dogs that have gone in to the C.I.A. And have never been so disrespected nor yelled at by a man like that. Bottom line is I ordered things and never went back to pick it up because he does not deserve my business after the blatant discrimination against my service dog. No one should be yelled at, none the less a women with no ill intent other than to purchase YOUR product. I agree with the review down a few that says he has no respect for women. I calmly replied to all his remarks and even said I have my doctors script for my dog yet that it is illegal to ask for that. We are SO lucky to have Schatzie's in the neighborhood... there are precious few butchers left in NYC. I've known about Schatzie's for years, back to the time he was on the UES. Then I moved out of NY so missed the move to Amsterdam Ave. Now I'm back in NY and the new place is a couple of blocks away and I'm delighted. I recently had a houseful of guests coming for a long weekend out on Long Island and so went to Schatzie to stock up. I got veal chops, butterflied leg of lamb, tri-tips (sp?) and free-range chickens. It was all cut to order and then vacuum packed to save space. Everything was absolutely fabulous and got rave reviews from my guests. The quality is outstanding. The burger joint is great... simple, uncomplicated and fabulous burgers as well as a good pulled pork sandwich. I don't understand the comments from Charles R.... I am a frequent customer and Metro Diner and like it a lot but you can't compare the two burgers... as the Brits would say, it's comparing "chalk and cheese". I agree with Kate B. about the casualness. Everyone, staff and guests, are friendly and relaxed. It's a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. read more

We have been here a few times but I just realized I never did a review. We first went years ago for a ground beef special. They don't have ground beef laying out, it is fresh ground for you. It was unbelievable! So flavorful and no gristle. But we live in NJ and didn't go in the city much so didn't get back for awhile. Flash forward a few years and we are in NYC much more so decided to look them up. Meat is still amazing but then we started to eat there too. They have a little restaurant and had a burger special. For $9.95 you get their excellent quality meat and fresh cut fries (a huge serving). But sitting there staring at the amazing meats made us try something new last night. We were able to pick out the exact steaks we wanted. They charge a few dollars to cook it and then we chose our sides. First of all it is cooked to perfection, exactly how you request it. Then you realize how tender and flavorful the meat is and you are in heaven. The spinach side was very plentiful and much enjoyed. All total our bill was about half of what it would have been at a "fancy" steakhouse but tasted much better and we could see what we were getting. We also bought food to take home. We bought a chuck filet roast and some of their beef stock. We watched them cutting the roast while we had dinner so we knew it was fresh! So now we just enjoyed the most amazing meal with absolutely perfect gravy using their stock. Of course there is fat on it but just the right amount to add flavor, not to be a huge waste. We both ate a good amount because it was really just so fork tender and again, truly flavorful. All in all we can't wait to return to eat at the restaurant but also to bring another roast home. Just had lunch at Richie's Burger Joint - the eat-in section of Schatzie's. When I heard they were moving uptown from their former location I was pretty excited as I'd heard a good deal about it but had never been. I have to honestly say it was all-that and more. We both ordered the Hudson Valley Grass Fed Burgers. Perfectly prepared - a REAL medium rare and perfect medium - and the fixings were also laid on in just the right amount. But the meat was SUPERB and wasn't overpowered at all by the typical trimmings. Even the onion was part of the flavor and not THE flavor. At $13 it's comparable to what you'd pay almost anywhere else in the neighborhood, although in a less "atmospheric" environment - but I wanted the meat, not the dim lighting. Haven't had a better burger anywhere east of Boulder CO. Forget Shake this or Mel's that - - - this has it ALL OVER the competition! We also decided to try the Brussels Sprouts w Pancetta app since, well, since we really LOVE Brussels Sprouts. Moist, swimming in a marvelous garlicky broth and cooked to a turn. AWESOME! I've gotta figure out how to make it like this at home - - - but, hey, why bother when they'll make it for me? I have a "what's my tummy saying?" evaluation process about meals, and when I left my tummy was singing a happy little tune. In fact, it was so happy it made me stop at the butcher section to take home some slab bacon. Can't wait to try it for breakfast tomorrow. Also really impressed with their line of prepared foods at reasonable prices. They are next on my "must try" list - - - and don't forget their revolving selection of seasonal beers on tap. OK - I've died and gone to heaven. AND (as if that wasn't enough) they carry a line of Italian specialities, including products from Raffettos' on Houston Street. I recently ate at the burger restaurant run by an angry man who is grossly obese. The burger was on special so it was small. The staff is poorly trained so when we asked for a substitute we were told non allowed. Richie came to our table and said he would allow substitution this one time. When we got the bill we were charged for the substitution although this was never mentioned. when we questioned the charge the huge man came at us with anger. If we had been informed of the charge we could have made an informed decision. His anger was uncalled for. Who knows how he would react to a more difficult problem. Beware of this restaurant eating here could be dangerous considering his immense size. read more

One of the last "old school" Butchers in the city. Shatzie is a native New Yorker and a third generation butcher. His meats are high in quality and his prices are very fair. We have been buying from him for the past few years and will continue to patronize his shop. I have gotten just about every meat he offers from the butcher shop and have never been disappointed. My husband and I will usually go on Sunday afternoon after church and the last time we went we decided to eat lunch in the restaurant side. The burger we had was made from the same ground chuck he sells in the butcher side and was perfectly cooked medium-rare. The fries from freshly cut potatoes were delicious. We were sitting near Shatzie's work area and we got to talking to him about NYC and how he has managed to keep his business going for so long. He is quite the character and he is a great butcher. We have recommended his butcher shop to people several times and will now recommended the restaurant part as well. He takes cash only on that side so be ready. My husband and I have been loyal customers of Schatzie's for years, and have recommended their meats to anybody who will listen. That all changes now, as Schatzie's lazy son has ruined our Christmas dinner. My husband, always good-natured, swung by Schatzie's the other morning to pick up short ribs for our Christmas dinner. Turns out, the son, who was waiting on him (unlike the actual butcher, who is awesome), never bothered to cut the ribs in half, which means that when my husband unwrapped them just now, he discovered 18-inch swaths of thick-boned ribs that we certainly couldn't cut with any of our standard kitchen tools. It would have been easy for this guy to cut it right there at the shop (and normally this is something you'd expect from a neighborhood butcher; he knew they were for a home-cooked meal and not some industrial kitchen). There's no excuse for this other than laziness. My husband arrived so early that there were no other customers there making the store busy, and my husband is always very friendly to the people helping him, but nope, this guy couldn't be bothered to make a very easy cut (for him), and now we have $60 worth of ribs that we are trying to scrape meat from while they are raw in order to get them to fit into our pans. So much for browning them on the bone. I suggested improvising another meal and bringing these ribs back tomorrow, but it's Christmas Day and nothing is open. From now on it's the Whole Foods meat counter for us. No more money for this place. Schatzie, you need to fire your son before he drives away even more of your customer base. read more
