Attended a workshop/conference at Columbia-Teachers College. The students recommended this Deli. I've now had lunch there three days in a row, and got dinner there twice. Everything I've eaten has been excellent. They are very friendly and fast and efficient with getting your order and getting you the right food. Their memories are pretty amazing. But also the portions are humongous, I have a big appetite, but I can only eat about half of whatever they've given me. I highly recommend. read more

This place is located near Columbia University on Amsterdam and 120th Street. There is a supermarket but this is for the deli. There are many options. I took a picture of some of the menus (see photos). We did not get one but look at the photo of the crab cakes. Those things are huge and $5.99. If you look closely at the photo, you can see how the breading is peeling in one location and it is not heavily breaded! We got the grilled cheese, spicy nacho grilled cheese, and All American sandwich (see photos). The food is all really good and freshly prepared. Coffee was good also. During the summers, this is my go to place. I always get the breakfast platter, because it's one of the best breakfast deals I've found in this area! Two eggs, bacon, and homefries with bread and jelly. It's $5 and quite filling. I also grab a hot tea(they carry my favorite!) and that's 1.75 extra. I don't eat out for breakfast often but I always come to apple tree to get my early morning fill. Apple Tree is a decent enough place if you need to pick up simple things. Honestly, I probably would not do any heavy grocery shopping at Apple Tree. The supermarket sells hot and cold for your lunch and early dinner needs. The food is not super amazing, but it is good enough to get you through the rest of the day. Also, Apple Tree has prepackaged sushi rolls that are not too sketchy. Tip: try to go before or after the lunchtime rush because the line can get pretty long and intense. Also, double-check the prices of your items before purchasing. A couple of times, I've picked up a 2-liter bottle of soda and another bottle would have a different price. read more

I always order Greek salad when I come in for a quick lunch during my break and the amount of food I get is always different (I got half the usual amount this time) while paying the same each time. I know this might sound stupid to some people but when you're a hungry grad student worrying about money, these things really piss you off. This place is a great resource to have by campus! It's great for a speedy lunch for in between classes as well as great stop in the evening before hitting the library for what is sure to be a long night. Their salad bar is wonderful, always lots of options that are fresh and yummy. Their wraps are great as well, and customizable which us great! They work quickly which is appreciated when you are in a time crunch! Yes, technically it's just a corner bodega but in actuality, it's so much more than that they have a grocery section, snacks section, baked goods, salad bar, sandwich and wrap bar, lots of interesting beverage options, and an entire array of prepared foods. About the prepared foods, it's slightly a hit or miss; some options are wonderful and tasty while others not so much, but that's what you get with prepared foods, I guess. Re: their pricing, yes, they are definitely more expensive than other "delis" but for me, it's well worth it for numerous factors, including the convenience and options. Overall, when I went to student orientation last year right before starting Columbia, I had a bunch of people recommend grabbing a lunch there, including professors and students alike, and it has not disappointed. They say they're open 24/7 and they truly are. Through countless blizzards, hurricanes, and anything else that caused all the other establishments to close down, Apple Tree has always been open. With that being said, how can I really give this establishment any less than 4 stars?! They have a great variety of grocery items, wines, beers, a deli, and much more. The prices are definitely much higher than other stores but in the end I'm willing to cough up more for the convenience of it all. I will state though that the deli food alone would get two stars at most for me as the salads are ridiculously pricey and the sandwiches have been very dry and bland. If you live nearby, it's 2am in the middle of a blizzard, and are need garbage bags or ground beef or cat food or anything else, chances are Apple Tree will carry it and is open. read more

Appletree is your run of the mill grocery store/corner store minus the bodega cats. The prepared food is decent and there is a good variety and they're usually pretty speedy. It's a bit pricey but that's a given when you take into consideration the real estate. In addition to prepared foods, they also have groceries, which is a plus. Please don't visit this establishment. They were so rude. If you have a choice, please visit Sub Conscious across the street! I was on a long run today and went in early for an Orange Gatorade to refuel. The man at the register was talking to his friend but, when asked, pointed me to the Gatorade and when I wanted to pay I opened my small pocket on my running belt and took out my credit card. He just shook his head. I was perplexed but he said, "Do you have cash?" I said, "No, I'm on a run and trust me, you wouldn't want to touch the (sweaty, sopping) cash if I had it." He took my card and said, "$5 minimum." I took back the card, said, "No. That's not right and that is illegal." He didn't care at all. He went back to talking to his friend, hanging out at the register. There are some good things to say about the sandwiches. Some are quite tasty (breakfast sandwich) others less so (pastrami, philly cheesesteak). This is not the problem. But there are a few issues that are hard to excuse: (1) More than once the guys behind the deli counter put a wrong price on the items. Oddly it was never too little. Always more than it should have been. (2) Some guys behind the deli counter are so unfriendly that it hurts. (3) The checkout is often extremely slow. Many times I have been in the checkout line for more than 10 mins while holding my food. One person handling the checkout, moving like a sloth. Hot food is cold at this point and basically inedible by the time one gets to eat it. Even the sandwiches that are good when hot, are bad. If you are selling hot food, checkout needs to be faster, no excuses. Therefore 1 star. read more

Do not get the California Dreams sandwich, that was definitely not a good dream...Ordered the sandwich today and the bread tasted and smelt super weird. The hero they used in that sandwich is not the same as the ones you get at other delis. I was not a fan. Also, it was my fault for thinking salsa might be good in a sandwich...it is not. The salsa made the bread soggy and worst! They should take this sandwich off their menu, it is gross! Save your money, go elsewhere. As a supermarket their selection is awful and their prices are insanely high. It's small inside, the isles are narrow, you have to be anorexic to make it through one of them. The line to the cashier is always a disaster and during busy hours, you're stuck sucking in your tummy waiting on a line that weaves in and out of the isles to the back of the store. Oh, and the cashiers are nasty and usually forget to give you the plastic utensils you need for your food. The deli where you can get sandwiches and salads is decent, but Subsconscious a block away is way cheaper and better. They never put enough veggies/protein in the salads, but somehow people still pay $12 for one when at Subs it's $8. read more

I work next door and it is very convenient to be able to pop in whenever and grab the basics. sandwiches and subs are pretty delicious, salad bar is pretty bomb and they have a decent selection of natural and organic products. their produce section seems to be somewhat hit or miss and they're not your go-to for organic fresh foods. it's a normal deli but nicer because it's in columbia's hood, and also very crowded at lunch time. moderately priced for this area and I can count on them for lunch once in a blue moon. lentil soup--very bland, couldn't finish. and yet, the split pea they make isn't horrible. but try a jack jack if you feel like a sandwich, iced coffee is total crap, but it's cheap and..next door. the prepared foods section is pretty good. you can grab a bland penne vodka or a caprese or quinoa salad...there's definitely some variety in this small store. check it out if you're in the area and need a snack read more

I would say this place is good for simple things. Yogurt, rice to cook, coffee, etc. And the sándwiches at the deli for a quick meal are pretty good! I wouldn't buy produce here, I've tried a couple times and it wasn't good, some raspberries even had fur on them at the bottom. I've also noticed some of their items can be expiring very soon, or recently expired, so the shelf life has been very long - so do check! Additionally, atleast in one case pricing was inconsistent. I purchased a small swifter cleaner solution for about 7 dollars one week. Another week, a jumbo version of the same thing was priced the same. Be very aware of what you're buying but super convenient place for household staples or if you need something in a pinch. read more

EXQUISITE DELI! They prepare the best bagels here! I brought my girlfriends from Los Angeles to this deli to have them try the bagels...I think my girlfriends thought this sold the BEST bagels. Anyway, I love their deli because they have new items everyday...although I wish the people behind the counter didn't talk about me as if I didn't understand their Spanish (RUDE and probably why they didn't get a 4 star). The store is TINY and the aisles are not very spacious. Apple Tree is close to campus and a great place to stop if you need a few things. Not sure if I'd actually recommend buying a full week's of groceries here because it is a little pricey. They do sell a good amount of fresh produce, basic food necessities for the home and their CHEESE/HUMMUS section is pretty impressive. A good number of organic items as well. Open late and I love that their lines go by pretty quickly. Yes, be mindful of their $10 credit card minimum before entering. read more

Right across the street from Teachers College, Columbia University I rush out to this shop when I am in dire need of onions or whatever other produce ingredient that I lack (ie. lemons, apples, potatoes). Prices are fair, but you can do better if you go up a few blocks at The Met. However, with harsh winters and frequent storms, this store keeps me relatively dry. Pretty small by "supermarket" sizing, but well stocked with lots of foods of all types. Also a decent deli and other food-to-order selection (a bit limited because of covid restrictions). This place is the bomb! 24/7 full service deli and grocery store. Wow! Had the veggie burger with LTO, mayo & ketchup and it was super dank. Ordered two beef empanadas to go with it. Guy misheard me the first time so I got two chicken wings as well. The empanadas were not great. Tasty crumb cake and black and white cookies. It is really frustrating to see how little the store does to address those who walk into the store without a mask during this period of the pandemic. Rather than enforcing policy, and addressing the situation when it arises, they expect customers to defend themselves and address situations that are rather uncomfortable (for example being accosted by a inebriated mask-less customer). This place uses deceptive pricing with the goal of ripping off Columbia students and locals. For example, they charged me $5.09 for a two pack of bounty paper towels, and in the same transaction $2.09 for one bounty paper towel. When I pointed it out to them they refused to refund me, saying that the "manager was out." Overall, their pricing is very high across the board and service lacking. Would only go here based on convenience (open 24/7), but even then, recommend other places nearby. This is one of the worst grocery/corner store experiences in my entire life. If you like being ripped off and treated rudely this is the place for you! Too many times I have bought ice cream from Apple Tree only to discover when I got home that it had been melted and refrozen. After the sixth or seventh time of this happening, I decided never to buy ice cream from there again. My partner, however, did. When we brought it back looking for a refund they told us they never have any problems with their freezer and then went on to accuse us of trying to pass off another store's melted ice cream on them. The sandwiches are pretty good as previously stated by other Yelpers. My favorite is the American sandwich with provolone instead of Swiss -- always good. I prefer the salad bar at Westside, imo it's way better because they have a bigger selection. I also think it's cheaper at Westside because they weigh by the lb and not by individual choices like at Appletree. They have a lot of food and other goods. I try to do all of my big shopping at Trader Joe's, but I come here when I need something small or just craving a snack since I live so close by. The prices are typical for the delis and other markets around the area (west side/Morton williams) - which are kind of high. Last note: fried mozzarella sticks are delish :) read more

Being a college student, I prefer the sandwiches at this place over any other place's sandwiches in the area (even Subsconcious!). Apple Tree offers a fantastic variety of tasty sandwiches that will no doubt fill you up for 1-2 meals (depending on how hungry you are). I typically go with the Jack Jack sandwich (Chicken cutlet, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and cheese) but you pretty much can't go too wrong with any of the choices on the sandwich menu. This is the perfect place to go during lunch time, especially if you're in a rush. You'll be in and out within about 5 minutes. :) As far as everything else there, it's probably best to skip it because it's pretty overpriced. read more
