I love the fish and wall decor. Everything looks fresh. The employees were smiling and friendly. I was asked if I needed help and given a menu to take home. I had my eye on the Crab Cakes. I did notice the prices are very high. When I had time to look at the menu I realized there's no prices on it. This review is for the premade food only! I picked up the meatballs, chicken marsala, coleslaw and creamed spinach. 10/10 on both the meatballs and chicken marsala. I didn't enjoy the coleslaw because it had too much pepper. I am going to try the creamed spinach tonight and I'm sure it will be delicious! I can't wait to come back and try other foods! read more

This place is really good, as far as the taste of the lobster roll I ordered. I give 3 stars because it's unnecessarily priced high. I ordered the lobster roll and a crab cake, the total was $39. The crab cake was given to me ice cold, so I couldn't even eat it until I got home and heated it up. The lobster roll had so much celery but the celery actually made sense. This is coming from someone that hates celery. The roll was not toasted or buttered, so halfway into eating the roll, it got soggy and started falling apart. The service was really lousy. The staff was borderline rude, and far from welcoming. While looking around the display, the server told me to just look at the menu and order.... why??? I guess they don't want you to see what youre paying for the food. Either way, I won't be going back, but the lobster was delicious. i wish I lived closer. My Dad lived on the next block so I went there fairly regularly. Mainly for their amazing crab cakes. I also remember the great scallops and trout. Other than homemade these crab cakes are the best. Worth every penny. I hadn't had one in quite some time but on Friday I was with my neice and she asked me if I wanted her to drive me anywhere. Everything I have ever purchased here is top quality. This includes: burger meat, shrimp, fish, sausage and chicken. Perhaps I'm a pauper, but the steaks here are slightly out of my comfort range at an opening price point of $30/lb for a skirt steak which isn't even the best cut... FYI a pound of burger blend is $15/lb. just to give you an idea of prices. That being said, the quality is truly excellent and everyone who works here is professional. read more

Tonite, I was looking forward to a feast on a Angus Sirloin that my wife picked up earlier during the day. Despite the fact that the steak was on sale, the counter person assured her that the steak was top notch and delicious.........Flash forward........this awful cut of meat was fatty, tasteless and tough - everything a steak should not be...............We had tried Leonard's once before with a mediocre result.......there are only two strikes in this ballgame..........My sense is that Leonard's will sell you anything to reduce inventory...........not a repeat...... read more

What you see is not what you get Ordered take-out from the respected and respectable butcher Leonard's last night--the veal chop and sword fish accompanied by sides of cole slaw, steamed carrots and red roasted potatoes. The photos were impressive. The food was not. Definitely not the same quality they sell uncooked and that's in the case. Rather a small piece of meat, clinging to 1/2 a bone doubled as the $29 veal chop--it was more of a left over something cut from something larger--the swordfish had known better days, lots of them, before it arrived soggy and forelorn in its tin-foil pan--the tarter sauce with it was excellent--wonder if they make it or buy it--and the sides--looked like they had carefully measured out a cup of each--were unappetizing and tasteless. Wish I had taken my own photos. I wonder if they go to their local Food Emporium for the fixings for their prepared and delivered food--after all, why affect the profit-margins by serving the real stuff they keep behind the glass? $100+ dollars for a learning experience. read more

Good products, questionable service. Their products are generally very good. However, service is subpar. Not friendly. More importantly, they engage in a very shady practice that no butcher I have ever gone to uses. Typically, when you get a steak, the butcher will cut it, then trim it, and then weigh it so you pay for what you are really getting. The trimmings are just part of their overhead that they take into account when they price their product. Not at Leonard's. First, they cut it. Then they weigh it and you pay for the whole thing. Then they trim it, meaning you pay for the part of the steak that is not even good enough for them to really sell you. Their prices are high enough already to do this. Unacceptable, and for this reason, I can't recommend it. read more

I really want to give Leonard's 5 stars because everything that I've had there (primarily pork) is so amazing I can't eat pork from anywhere else now! It is SO good. They get 4 stars because they are pricey, but hey it's Heritage breed pork so... you get what you pay for! Delicious, everyone in there is nice, I love the butchers. Totally worth the trek! I was looking for a boneless turkey breast for Thanksgiving and was having a hell of a time finding a decent one. I live in this area and I walked by Leonards Market (now on 2nd and 74th?). I knew this was going to be the place to get my turkey breast. Immediately I was offered help when I entered and as I explained my situation to one of the butchers, he knew exactly what I needed. About 5 minutes later I had half a breast (perfect for 2), he de-boned it, and he was explaining how I should cook it as well. He was super nice in a very grand-fatherish way. The only reason I took one star off is because it's a bit pricey. I think the quality is on par for the price, but $13 for a half a breast later I felt a little milked. BUT, for Thanksgiving I didn't mind. read more

I too had an experience similar to that of Andrew, who posted in October of 2018. I ordered lamb chops for Easter, and they were delicious. HOWEVER, the two chops I received totalled 1.4 pounds in weight, yet I was charged for 3 pounds. When I enquired as to the discrepancy, I was told that I was charged for their weight prior to their being trimmed; so over half of what I paid for, I did not receive. read more

Leonard's may have the best meat in the world, but I'll never know because they weren't open on Sunday as advertised here and on their website. When you say you'll be open at 11 am, you should certainly be open by 11:25 am. Instead, the store was dark. There was no sign of humans and no sign on the door indicating that they were closed. I had checked the website and even signed up for their newsletter and printed out their coupon before trekking up from the flatiron. Now, maybe they believe that no one needs meat on mothers' day. But if so, why not indicate that on your website - "open 7 days a week except the sunday when you probably want to cook at home because restaurants are all booked up". The only saving grace is that there is a Citarella a block away, and they were happy to sell me a lovely prime steak. read more

Pre-ordered a 16 lb. turkey for Thanksgiving without getting any clarity regarding the price (my mistake). The cashier who took my order also sold me on gravy, stuffing and cranberry relish. It was all assembled and ready when I went to pick it up. The turkey was a basic fresh Bell & Evans no-hormones model. It was good, but not meaningfully better than the turkeys that live in supermarkets. The gravy was a quart of average brown goo. The "stuffing" was a bag of Pepperidge Farm seasoned breadcrumbs -- period. (On reflection, I am not quite sure what I was expecting.) And then there was the "cranberry relish" -- a jar of Sarabeth's cranberry preserve, which necessitated a separate scramble to get some proper cranberry sauce on the table. The punchline to all of this was a credit card charge that plucked me for over $140.00. Not a bad meal, but not a good value either. read more

The grand-fatherish butcher mentioned below brought me the meat with a smile- it was tightly packed in a neat package wrapped in a plastic bag. The bill - pricey. Later when I went to cook the meat I unopened the package and saw what looked like great meat...that is until I sliced into it. The butcher had wrapped a thin layer of fresh red sirloin meat around nearly a pound of brown meat. It was disgusting. He cheated me. Run don't walk away from this place. I noticed the "lobster rolls" sign on Leonard's door and decided to give it a try, very excited about the possibility of a good, to-go lobster roll on the UES. (I never cook meat, poultry, or fish, so I would never have thought to walk into this shop had the sign not caught my eye.) The lobster was super fresh, with just the right amount of seasoning, mayo, and chives on a basic bun. The guys who work here are very nice. For $16, the price is comparable to that of other take out/away lobster rolls (including Lukes's, Red Hook Lobster Pound, and Homarus), but Leonard's wins on flavor. The quantity is not enough to make this a meal by itself (nor is the quantity at any of the other vendors listed), but that's easily solved by purchasing two or pairing it with sides. The only downside at Leonard's is that there are no sides to pair with the lobster roll, but a quick trip to Citarella to pick up their delish potato salad and crunchy string beans sautéed with garlic, and you've got a winner! read more

wow, is the only word to describe this place, its like walking into a butcher/seafood store that is specifically designed for you alone, the staff are very friendly and thoroughly knowledgeable about leonards meats and fish, they even give you receipes for any of the stuff your buying. i bought a whole filet mignon, and it really was the best beef ive ever had, it practically melted in my mouth when it was cooked, and my friends are very keen for me to have another dinner party soon. i have since bought the grey sole filets, and followed a receipe given to me buy an older gentleman, it turned out awesome. i have tried other places in the neighborhood, and honestly none of them come near leonards, for their food & service, if you enjoy having the best, this is the place to go!!! read more
