I'm very disappointed in the service lately. I've lived in temple for 15 years now and loved shells always but the elderly lady with purple hair is the rudest lady I've ever met. Rolled her eyes when I asked for my food well done. I'm sorry you're old and make just as much as me. Very unfortunate. And for the middle aged lady with the outrageous bob in the front maybe ur kids are little demons but you should change ur mood when dealing with customers. Ur grumpy and should put a smile on ur face and lose the attitude. And don't get me started on the raw dough in the cheese cubes. The last like 8 times they have not Been fully cooked through. My family ordered Schell's for dinner and was very happy with the food. We tried the spicy chicken sandwich, onion rings, fried chicken with fries and a ranch burger. I like how the French fries come in the cute little paper instead of a carton. The service was very quick and it was not crowded on a Wednesday night. There is indoor seating and outdoor seating as well as a golf course. The food tastes better than your average fast food restaurant, maybe it's because I don't think the recipes don't change from much. Sometimes when we've come here it's as busy as having a line out the door (that just goes to show how much people like Schells)! Even though it's not pictured and we didn't order it, we've gotten the Barbecue sandwich which is ground beef marinated in their unique Barbecue sauce between two burger buns and it's really good! They are on the small side compared to a ranch burger so if you get a Barbecue sandwich get more than one Also the Schells Dairy Swirl next door is really great and has been around for many years. Their ice cream is good. The food is okay. The food lowers the rating because portions are smaller and prices are growing. My BBQ sandwich was cold. I've been coming here for over 40 years. This place is pretty great. The mini golf is the classic style, but also challenging. The course is 27 holes with water features, a lighthouse and lots of bridges. Service was very friendly. I wish we had gone a little earlier in the day as they were busy, so we needed to wait at each hole for a little while. It wasn't bad, but it was a hot day so my son pooped out after 21 holes. He did enjoy it though and wants to go back when it is cooler out. There is also a restaurant with classic things like chicken and burgers, although we haven't tried that yet. There is plenty of parking. Even though it was hot and there was a wait, people were great and enjoying themselves. They are open during COVID. Masks are required in the restaurant and suggested during mini golf. Most golfers were not wearing masks, but were social distancing. read more

Having German by this location the number of times, I've always wanted to have the opportunity to stop and check out the ice cream shop. The shop could be so much more than it is, it's uninspired decor is only matched with the uninspired ice cream offerings The three youth full employees that were working when I was there, we're as disinterested in creating a sundae of excellence as they were at appearing to be in teenage misery. A fun little local place. The mini golf, food and ice cream are cheap. People are happy here too, it seems to be a family business and has been around a long time. The golf course here is 27 holes long and a decent challenge. It's kind of impressive that they fit so much in such a small place. The make good use of water and every hole is different enough that the 27 holes don't get repetitive. Hole 26 was my favorite, it's rare that you get to hit a mini golf ball that hard anywhere. The course features no windmills or clowns but is set up more like a real golf course, there are water, sand, and rock hazards, doglegs, and undulations. The best part is they have a few ball washers on the course, I love mini golf courses with ball washers. They feature specials on hot dogs, hamburgers, and fries. The ice cream is decent and cones are cheap. Don't expect anything too healthy here, when you are playing the mini golf you can smell the fries and burgers in the air. From what I was told the ranch burger is the best thing on the menu, but I did not get a chance to try it. Very well kept and clean. Lots of parking but it does get busy summer evenings. Overall how can you go wrong with Mini golf, Soft serve ice cream, and a small grille. A great place to stop for some fun with family. This place could be so much more! Schell's has been a staple in the Reading area for generations, but it's falling behind the times. Can we start with the basics? Maybe just make sure the grounds are clean and the water is clear. I'm all about water hazards in the mini golf course, but when there are mosquito larvae just chillin' in there? Not so much. Clean that ish. There was that opening scene in the 1995 hit film Outbreak starring Dustin Hoffman where the government literally firebombed a whole village to eradicate a biological threat. I'm not saying go that far, but it needs to be addressed. Just tell intern Bobby to get in there and dump 10 lbs. of chlorine in there. Problem solved. And Bobby gets his moment of glory. The food is on par with what you'd find at 7-11. So if you like hot dogs that turn 'round and 'round on those metal rollers for days at at time, this place is a "must visit". The toilet will also be a "must visit" a few hours after consuming said food. In a nutshell, come for minigolf. The course is solid .Just apply liberal amounts of mosquito repellent. Always like supporting family establishments over the chain Mc"foods". Food is decent...hot dog with bbq was better than the bbq beef alone. Beef bbq was 1.85, dog with bbq was 2.65, fries are 159 for small, and flat clburger was 1.65. Cons: Cheap prices equate to smaller serving sizes. The bbq could use 2 scoops instead of one, and the regular hamburger looked like it had been flattened by a steamroller. Go for the 1/4 pound burger! Great little place with average picnic style food. Delicious milkshakes are so refreshing after a round of mini golf. (My daughter LOVES the raspberry shake.) The golf course is clean and you get a decent length of game for the cost. Fun and laid back atmosphere that has an old fashioned ambiance that makes it such a refreshing and family friendly place to visit. A local landmark and easily one of the best places to visit for some cheap eats and fun. The menu is simple, mostly serving burgers, hot dogs, BBQ, fries and soda. The prices are low too, cheaper than most diner food in the area. Be sure to fry the fried cheese balls. They have a mini golf course out in back, so be sure to take the kids mini-golfing before or after eating. Part 1: The Food I can't speak about the food at Schell's because I've never had it. I've been coming to play mini-golf there for over thirty years and my family has told me horror stories about long waits, disenchanted servers, and bad diner style slop being passed off as edibles so I have never tempted fate and I feel OK with that choice because I rarely see anyone inside eating when I've been there. Part 2: The Ice Cream Now the Dairy Swirl is a whole different animal in that they do decent business year round. A lot of times in the summer between people playing golf and people trying to get into have ice cream you might run into a serious lack of parking. There are not a whole lot of flavors and nothing that they serve is gourmet or very different but it's usually always solid. Part 3: The Mini-Golf Yes there is actually a place in Berks County that has more holes than Schell's but this course is still the best. The holes are unchanged in forever but the carpets are still well maintained and other than the occasional issue with yellow jackets and bees over by #6 & #7 the course is challenging but still very doable for people of all ages. While I doubt that I'll ever eat at Schell's, their mini golf is good enough to make a trip out to Berks County once a summer to have a great time and to play a great course that is still as fun today as it was when I was a kid. read more

I ordered for 4 people...the only thing that was edible was the French fries. The hotdogs are not beef dogs, they are the cheapest most processed dogs ever. They have no taste and were not cooked, just warmed. The fried chicken is the worst fried chicken ever! Wal-Mart has better fried Chicken! I have no idea how this place has customers. You just don't find places like this anymore. A family-run fast food joint. I got a cheeseburger and my fiancee got the barbecue sandwich. We split an order of (crinkle cut!) fries. My burger was thin (which I love) with a decent amount of cheese; made fresh when I ordered it. The barbecue sandwich was sloppy joe-esque but I know it was very much enjoyed. The fries are right out of the frozen food aisle but add a little salt and they were more than okay. Fries have to be REALLY bad to get a negative review from me ... After dinner we made our way to the ice cream shop side of the parking lot. They do a very brisk business. Nothing out of the ordinary but it's ice cream, it's always good. Like fries, ice cream would have to be dropped on the floor and then presented to me with dirt stuck to it to get a negative review. The atmosphere is rustic and there are no frills but it's a great little spot. If we go back I'd love to check out the miniature golf course after dinner. Schell's was the scene of many of my high school first dates. I still go here for lunch when I'm home. I always get a hot dog with ketchup, mustard, and onions with cheese cubes. The ranch burger is also pretty great. It's amazing to me that Schell's cheddar cheese cubes have never been copied by major fast food chains. They are delicious, especially when super hot and gooey. I would never call this place a fast food restaurant because you will wait a while for your food - especially at lunch time. Things seem to move in slow motion at Schell's. The food is good and appears to have some home made touches. With that said, I think the prices are expensive. Today, we had lunch and ordered 4 hot dogs, two medium drinks and two large orders of fries. The bill was a little over $12.00. This place is certainly a throw back to a much simpler time. Amazing mini-golf course (watch the mosquitos on the middle 9 holes though!) and really tasty food after. I recently tried the hot dog that's stuffed with jalapeno cheese and omg it's amazing! It's called something like "hot dog special" and is listed under the "hot dog with bbq" on the menu. The hot dog with bbq (note: bbq=sloppy joe mix) is also good, but I'm still craving another one of the jalapeno cheese dogs. Schell's has always been an excellent place to pick up a quick meal. This is the only "fast food" that really tastes delicious. Excellent service, cleanliness, and food. Extremely cautious in regard to COVID-19 precautions. Schell's really cares about their customers and employees. Every experience I've ever had at Schell's (50 years and counting) has been a positive one. I highly recommend this spot fir lunch or a quick bite to eat anytime.
