Schlander is an excellent jeweler. I went here to try and find a platinum setting for a ring. They have a beautiful platinum and white gold selection, including antique/vintage inspired settings as well as gorgeous modern sleek ones. I had a good idea of what I wanted going in, but after seeing their selection I couldn't decide! I still can't! If you know me, you would know that I do not wear anything remotely similar to business suits. I pretty much look like some kid in Converse sneaks and a pencil skirt with holes in it hiding a bottle of lush in my purse. (Not the case!) However, when you walk in this place, they do not judge you and give you the best service. I always take notice of this because I work in customer service and am very critical of it. They do custom settings here and do it at the cost of the materials, not for labor. I get the idea that they are very honest. They also do not work on commission, so you can pop in anytime. I would love to deal with them more in the future. read more

I called Schlanderer and Sons to ask if they could remove a couple of links from a watch. The woman was polite and courteous (I am a professor at the large public university next door, and I speak with an American accent) and said that they provided that service and they do it for $5. I told her that I'll try to be there before 5 30 (when they close). I dropped my mother 5 minutes later and went to look for parking. My mother is a Pakistani woman who wears the Muslim headscarf. She is a professor in Pakistan and speaks perfect English. When she went in, she was made to feel unwelcome and was asked who'd told her that they provided this service. She said that her son had spoken to someone on the phone just now. The gentleman behind the counter said that he could remove the links for her. The gentleman fixed the watch immediately (removed two links), and professionally. My mom was charged $10, and not given a receipt (she paid cash). It's not about the money (the reason I post these figures is because I want to mention how minuscule the amount was). I generally don't post reviews on yelp (positive or negative). But the reason why I feel compelled to post a poor review is because my mother (a visitor to the city from Pakistan) was made to feel unwelcome and overcharged, and my guess is it is because of the way she dresses/looks/speaks. There were other people in the store at the time who were being treated very respectfully and diligently. It is unfortunate that certain people are more welcome than others at Shlanderer and Sons in 2019 (most likely because of the way they look, dress and speak). read more

There I go again, trying to support Michigan's economy by directing all my big purchases to my home state. I sent Schlanderer & Sons a lengthy and detailed e-mail about a watch I wanted to order from them: the new Rolex Sky-Dweller. I included my specifications, and a couple of questions. I used the e-mail address on their webpage. Three weeks later and no response. Alrighty then...I'll call. They did answer the phone, but were short with me and had no answers for any of my questions. (It would've been equally as helpful if they hadn't answered the phone at all.) After listening to a bunch of "We don't knows," I asked her if "We" were the owner and, if not, try running my questions past him/her. Finally, I learned they would be receiving the model I wanted. They did not, however, know which metal, color, price, nor arrival date. They didn't offer to find the answers. They didn't ask for my name, number, or e-mail address. They just said "Ok...well, thanks for calling!" Fascinating! For a watch that costs almost $50,000, I guess I expected a wee bit higher level of service, and a relatively knowledgeable staff. Then again, maybe I'm just grumpy tonight. I'll get my watch this year. But I'm uncertain whether it'll be during my next visit to A2, as I originally planned. read more

I went in to get a battery for my watch and everyone was very friendly. The battery cost $10 and took about 5 minutes. I also wanted to look at their watch selection while I was in there. They have the standard selection of men's and women's Rolex watches (Daytona, Submariner, explorer, milgauss, etc.). The only other brand I saw was Tissot but they stocked both quartz and automatic with a pretty good selection. read more

When I visited Schlanderer, Gordon very kindly disassembled the watch to get model and serial numbers and authenticate it. He probably spent about 15-20 minutes total on this. Schlanderer and Sons jewelers is a true example of why it is so worth spending the time to work with a small, locally owned business. I have taken several rings in to be sized and recently needed to have a stone replaced on my vintage wedding ring. This is not an easy thing to do and they did it so well. The staff- especially Junea'- are genuinely friendly and knowledgeable and willing to work with their customers to achieve the best possible results. I love the atmosphere- even though it is a throwback to an earlier kind of store experience the jewelry they offer is contemporary yet timeless. So much fun to walk past and even more fun to stop in to see all the beautiful jewelry and watches. Wish I had a reason to go there more often! read more

Best selection of engagement/diamond rings I've seen, bar none. Local bench jeweler can customize rings from scratch for a reasonable price, including in PALLADIUM metal, which is hard to find. I had been to 5 or 6 other independent jewelry stores searching for an engagement ring, but none of them had quite the look I had in mind. Schlanderer & Sons' selection is HUGE, such that I not only was able to find a setting very close to my vision, but another setting that was also my favorite of all the ones I'd seen. I ended up taking advantage of their customization option to combine my two favorite settings into one! They also had several stones shipped in and helped me pick one out for the center. I think the prices are no higher than average for independent jewelry stores, and the prices for customized pieces are also reasonable or even lower. Only minor nitpicks are that they don't disclose and explain the stones and pieces in as much detail as I tend to like (e.g., you have to explicitly ask them to show you the stones under a scope). You really have to know something about stones and ask them to get the specifics. Plus the bench jeweler is local, but not in-house--which means you have to allow some extra days for pickup and drop-off when you want them to do a job (e.g., resizing). They are very courteous and patient in answering questions, though, so I thought the customer service was reasonable. To summarize, I highly recommend Schlanderer & Sons for initial selection and custom work. If there are other places you trust, you may want to consider those places for detailed appraisals or for small, run-of-the-mill jobs like resizing. read more

I have an antique ring that I wanted to get refitted so that I could wear it. I specifically told the sales representative, at the time, that I was not interested in the value of the stones, but that I wanted the artists signature to remain. I was assured that this was not a problem. I came in to pick up the ring a week later and was notified of the value of the stones. The artists' signature was wiped and the sizing was wrong. Adding to this the sales representative, this time, tried to argue that the reason the ring was not fitting properly was because I had had "Chinese food and salty potato chips" all week and that my hands were bloated. I have never met sales clerks so rude as the ones in this store, or so unwilling to listen to what the customer is asking for. This is definitely not a jewelry shop that I will not be returning to, and would recommend that anyone going there in the future should be wary of. read more

I took a necklace in to have the chain replaced with a shorter one. I provided them with the replacement chain and when I went back to pick it up the charge was $37. I thought this was absolutely outrageous. They said the chain had been soldered and that was the reason for the price (which is outrageous anyway.) Upon closer inspection, the chain had not been soldered. The woman behind the counter told me that this type of chain cannot be soldered. OK - "If you knew this why did u charge me for soldering," I asked. The saleswoman had no reply and returned to the back room to huddle with her people. They ended up refunding me half and when I requested a detailed receipt, things went from bad to worse. The saleswoman very snidely asked, "If I needed it for tax purposes." She again went in the back and said, "Now, she wants a receipt!" I can't believe how disrespectfully I was treated at this store and how they attempted to overcharge me. I cannot even imagine purchasing an expensive item and having any faith that I was getting what I paid for. A very unpleasant experience. read more
