They had been open only a few days, and this was the first Friday. There was a line. I suspect they didn't quite expect that much pent-up demand for them. The bartender was good but in the weeds. Beer was great. (Try the double bock on tap--rich beers, served from very clean lines, in a half-liter glass. Take that pint ;) This made the wait run smooth. I had a farmer's plate, which was well over a pound of pork in various guises. As the waitress said, "It's good for more meals". Wife's schnitzel under a mildly spicy tomato sauce is good. Glad we didn't get appetizers, as the portions are generous. And very delicious. The bartender worked very hard to keep up. Another bartender to run the service bar and another waitron on the floor, and things would have run more like they used to when they were on Fifth Avenue. Even as they were running around, everyone was friendly. Still, wife and I had a very good time, and do not pass up the smoked beer. (Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen, I'm fairly sure: aka liquid bacon.) Several beers on tap, and the bottled selection can't be beat around here. Went on a Saturday night, and the dining room was half empty. The knackwurst I ordered was good but overcooked. Someone at our table got the sausage platter, and the weisswurst on it was inedible. I tasted it to make sure it wasn't just him, and it wasn't. We told the server. She offered nothing. I wasn't asking for it to come off the bill. I finally got to visit here, and it only took a trip to a foreign country to do it. Coming off the heels of a trip to Switzerland, I decided to stop here because in case for those that do not know, Switzerland and Germany share important and similar cuisines and cultures. After all, Switzerland and Germany share a border, and a language. Most Swiss speak German, so I figure this would be a great spot to try after spending six days in one of Europe's underrated gems. I am here to break it all down for you to tell you what I got, the rating, and then conclude whether or not you should spend your cash (yes, this is a cash only restaurant) here. For this restaurant to have a create your own Schnitzel option is one that I took seriously, and I am happy that I have the opportunity to do it. I got three cutlets of each variety, pork, chicken, and veal, then smothered it with mushroom gravy (rahmschnitzel style), then topping it with an egg. Since it comes with two sides, I chose the pretzel and the spaetzle, but those will be discussed separately. For dessert, I got their apple strudel because no true German dinner would be complete without be ordering one of them. ---- Schnitzel: The Schnitzel here is as delicious as I had it many times over in Switzerland. Lean cut, lots of flavor, good breading, and a character reminiscent of its European brethren, I was happy to eat it and I told my server that this was delicious. The veal one is probably the best, then the chicken, followed by the pork, but either of the three work well in a pinch. The mushroom gravy is spot on with plenty of mushrooms and the gravy is deep, and rich. Getting the fried egg on top gave it all a nice texture and though it costs extra, definitely get the add on. Eating all three had for a moment wanting me to turn around, and get back on a plane to Geneva or Zurich. Star rating: 4.5/5 Spaetzle: Spaeztle is German pasta, like a soggy noddle, but can be made either with meat, cheese or left on its own. It very much is like its cousin, gnocchi, as it is a potato pasta, with starchy flavor and needs to soak up its contents or the whole thing tastes lousy. Fortunately, the cheese here makes it like a European Mac n cheese. The cheese to the pasta make it quite the salty dish, but I enjoyed this a lot and really felt that this was a surefire side that I must get if I were to return. Star rating: 4/5 Pretzel: A Brezel, as it is called here, works well on its own. The cheeses they provide you give absolutely no character. I would also like it if the pretzel were saltless. The pretzels in Europe contain very little, to any salt, they let the butteriness and the bread do the talking. I had to scrape most of it off to save the taste, but it was still tough. To make this work you need at least to try the mustards once, but it only made it work just slightly. This is where they drop the ball, at least to me, on some authenticity to concede to American tastes. Star rating: 3.5/5 Strudel: The strudel here comes in apple form, which is not a surprise considering that was something I noticed as well while in Switzerland. The cream it comes with is delicious (because why else?), however everything else sends it downhill. It is tough, chewy, and was borderline burnt for about 80% of the pastry. I tried to cut it with a fork and knife but it only made the matter worse. Not the ideal way to end things. It is also quite expensive. Star rating: 2/5 ---- The food on the whole is absolutely delicious, but they also offer entertainment. Because the restaurant is small, it creates an issue hard to hear anything but the instruments and an uncomfortable environment to enjoy a meal. As the band that night was continuing to set up and prepare, the meal became less enjoyable because the acoustics in the restaurant are poor and made it harder to think straight. Once able, I paid my bill as quickly as possible got out of there before the band was able to really start performing. There was ringing in my ears for a time after I left as well. Lousy acoustics and dessert aside, this is a great way to try some authentic Alsace cuisine without having to fly to the region. read more

Never had a chance to try this restaurant when they were on 5th Ave, so wanted to give their new location a try. The moment I walked in, it smelled great and comforting. Spacious seating and comfortable, casual ambiance. The chicken schnitzel was flavorful and well made. We were happy with all dishes ordered. The Schhnitzel Haus is good but better than good, it's a work in progress. This was our first visit to the new location so they're entitled to a little easing into the site. The staff is busy, warm, and happy; the room needing a little more "Zither" feel. The actual veal schnitzels were almost at the old Yorkville standards, the Spätzle was the best we've had this side of Bavaria, a decent little salad came with it, and the wine is reasonable and good. I came here with my brother and sister on a night that Chain Reaction was playing. The music was great and the food and drinks were even better. For apps we ordered the mussels and potato pancakes. The mussels were fresh, tender, and cooked in a saffron garlic wine sauce that was phenomenal. 100% recommend the mussels. We all got schnitzels, which were so tender and delicious, and shared sides of red cabbage and creamed spinach. Both of which were excellent. Although it was very busy, we were well taken care of. Have come here multiple times since we moved to bay ridge even when it was dining outdoors only. Their food is delicious and it's always popping. Also they have live bands which is great. Brooklyn Bards was playing tonight. They have a good variety of draft German beers. Also, have had the fresh fruit summer sangria multiple times and it's delicious. I decided to come here for restaurant week 2022. They were super busy so I will give them some leeway so it was pretty hard to get any service for a drink or more water but wow, we also waited more than an hour for appetizers. Also, they were out of a lot of items. The sausage teller was very good and apple strudel was absolutely delicious. The dessert was hot and flakey and I don't even usually like desserts, yum! This visit started out slow but ended great. Service was great at the end. Only took 20 minutes to get our entrees and no time for our dessert. We visited this restaurant the day after, as we were forgetful, and left our backpack. Olivia, the bartender and waitress, from the night before, was nice enough to safely store our bag. We were overjoyed as the restaurant had a live band playing oldie songs at 7pm. We had the pleasure of having , Amber and a young lad, served us with smiles and such politeness. Looking at the menu, there was a variety of things to try. We started our dinner with PILZE FÖRSTERIN ART. This was a mushroom appetizer to die for. It was absolutely amazing! Mouthwatering, and so flavorful with every bite. Making sure we had room to try a dessert, we decided to order a light dinner, and shared the LEBERKÄS MIT SPIEGELEI as our entree. This is a pork and veal loaf with two fried eggs on top. It came with mash potatoes, but the waitress so graciously allowed us to substitute with the German Potato salad. The eggs were perfect to our liking, but the loaf was a bit salty, but still good. The potato salad was also good. The entree was a nice size portion. We ordered the Black Forest cake, and thought it was okay. For us, it was not moist enough. We're looking forward to returning as our two consecutive visits were very nice. read more

Last week we went for our annual Kris Kringle gathering. A group of 15-20 of us have been doing this for many years- with the last 10 or so being at Schnitzel Haus- but this is the first time I am putting in a review. Let me start with my summary- the food was great and portions plentiful, the service was great with our glasses always filled, and the restaurant was the perfect place - plenty of room - for our gathering! We had a pre selected menu that included Bavarian pretzels to start , an appetizer of either salad or soup, a main meal choice from 6 items and desert. The selection of dinners were more than 1 meal- I had leftovers to take home and enjoy the next day. The food was delicious and the selection of German beers were great! Easily one of the most underrated places in Bay Ridge. The food here is unique and delicious. The beer selection is out of this world. I always get the escargot, and one of the soups. My friends and I wanted to try something new and came upon this restaurant on Yelp. We came on a Tuesday night and there wasn't a wait for a table. We started with the complimentary bread which was warm and fluffy. My friend had order the wurst sampler and he really liked it. I personally didn't try it since the meat was too game for my taste. We also ordered the potato pancakes (reibekuchen) which came with a side of sour cream and apple sauce and that was delicious! My friends ordered the pork shank (schweinshaxe) which came in 3 different sizes. This also takes a while to cook so make sure you order this as soon as you get seated if you know you're getting this. I had the rahm schnitzel which was SO good. It came with 2 pieces of fried pork cutlets topped with this mushroom gravy that was to die for. It also came with a side of home fries and a side salad. The home fries were so good! It was cooked perfectly and there were pieces of bacon in it. I definitely can't wait to come back for this dish! I had the warm bacon dressing everyone was raving about on my side salad and it tasted alright to me. Didn't have much of a bacon taste to it. Had a good experience and definitely will be coming back. The kitchen closes early during the weekdays so keep this in mind if you plan to come late. Also bring cash! We've been to this restaurant before and loved it. This time, however, was an entirely different experience. The food lacked flavor and authenticity. The Spätzle were literally tasteless. The sauerbraten also lacked flavor. The best thing about the night was the beer! Our server was new to the restaurant and was the only person on duty, so he was swamped. Service was as good as it could be with at least 7 tables and one inexperienced server. All in all, it was a GREAT disappointment, and we will likely not be going back again any time soon. read more

I finally took the ultimate photo of their Gulyás, which is a rich slow cooked beef and mushroom paprika stew. I get it with mash as I can't eat gluten, and these guys get the beauty of the potato. I'd imagine there is a smidge of flour in the roux, but as a non-celiac gluten intolerancia I eat it no problem Rindsgulasch mit Nudeln, but mit mash instead. They also make the distinction between the two types of goulash by specifying that the thin one is a soup. They make each schnitzel type different from the other versions, and complement it with a variety of Cental European sauce and big perfect pretzels with multiple mustards. their hashbrowns /rosti is great. Prime Rib Thursdays can be ordered by phone, even though it's not online. Even the steamed veg was cooked to that masterful point. The gluten free fish and chips would have been flawless except that it steamed during delivery, which caused the fish to break apart and the egg-heavy batter to lose all other flavor. Every bite I put in the tartar sauce was incredible because there was a zing in that sauce that kept me coming back for more. I love this place, as does my spouse. Great portions, flavors on point, and sauces like no other. Would love to try a potato pancake here at some point but gluten. Tastes like I'm in Dresden or Prague. My only request would be to get larger portion cups for sauces. I like the 6 őz cups for au jus, mushroom or Jäger sauce. 4 ounce for your mustard as the squirt into it will be less than 3 ounce total but leaves room for that little extra. The lemon wedge has never ever been forgotten no matter how many items we get or how often we order or how busy they are. That is another huge deal: the details. If your food is accompanied by many small side items, the meal is ruined if those sides fail to leave with the delivery order. These guys never fail to include each precious detail. You can feel the passion in their cooking. The packaging is thoroughly and meticulous. The pricing is fair and the delivery charge is reasonable. This business has held on through some devastating crises and came out stronger perhaps because the owner loves his restaurant. The deserve to be successful for decades to come. I was very pleasant with their food. I brought my family to this place couple years ago and they still talk about how good this place is on occasion. Fast forward to this year. I knew that this place has gone through difficult time in COVID and I saw that they starts doing delivery. I had the following - Schweinshaxe Hofbraeuhaus (Pork knuckle), Wurst Teller Mit Allem Drum Und Dran (Wurst platter), Brezeln (Pretzel), Schofferhofer Grapefruit, Bitburger and German Chocolate Cake. Thumbs up to the wurst platter - this platter consists five different wurst and is served with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. Although I had no ideas what meat I was having, they were all exceptionally flavorful. I will definitely go for this again. Pork knucle was huge in size - I think I had a medium size and it can fed two to three people. Pretzel was alright - just a regular pretzel but I found it a bit too small compared to how big the other dishes were. Great selection in beer and my family enjoyed the grapefruit beer and bitburger a lot. I initially ordered the Belgian Chocolate Mousse Cake but they gave me Pumpkin Cheesecake by mistake. I didn't contact them to make a correction as this was really not a big deal. I guess a little surprise in life wouldn't hurt. Overall this is a neighborhood staple and I will be back! read more

A Bay Ridge staple that's been around and I finally had an opportunity to visit the restaurant. Started with the pretzel and Wurst Teller to activate the palate before the main dishes, Sauerbraten and Hahnchen Paprikash arrived to fill us up. The Wrust Teller gave us a taste of different types wursts grilled or boiled. The pretzel was good, but disappointing because I was expecting a humongous pretzel and got a tiny one instead. The Sauerbraten was so tender, there's no need to use a knife. The Hahnchen Paprikash was a surprise...I was expecting dried pieces of chicken slathered in sauce, but as I cut into the chicken, I noticed the tenderness and soon confirmed the perfectly prepared chicken breast was tender and juicy. I had a good experience here and would definitely go back and try the other dishes. read more

I've eaten and ordered at schnitzel haus more times than I can count and it is always delicious and 5 star. The house salad is always fresh and crisp along with the house made dressing that is Sooo delicious. You never get an ugly salad here. The Thursday prime rib is a steal at the price and worth every penny. It's actually one of the best cuts of meat on this side of brooklyn and that's coming from a guy who has eaten at almost every steak house in the city. The smoked sausage is one of my other goto favorites or the Jaeger schnitzel. My wife loves the hahnchen in wein which is chicken in a wine sauce. Recently they added pierogis to the menu and they are hand made balls of deliciousness. Some of the best I've had. The lent fish and chips special was very good. Fresh flakey fish in a perfect seasoned batter breading. The portions are very generous so bring a doggy bag and take lunch home with you after. The service at schnitzel haus is really top notch. Between Dean waiting tables as one of the nicest and most attentive servers out there and charismatic Tommy slinging drinks behind the bar I gaurantee you will enjoy your visit. The owners are friendly caring people whom help run the place and you can tell they care greatly about customer experience and delivering a fine dining experience.
