The bartender who was also our server was very rude and seemingly inebriated. I can brush off rude staff, peeling paint, and even the decrepit interior, but this place is a has-been type of joint that serves the type of food that the older generation enjoys - 20 versions of bland. The food was so dated, like a retirement home version of german dishes. Potato pancakes were the worst - unbalanced starch levels, undercooked, and with a strange, dishwater under-taste. I didn't even ask for a refund, I just could not eat them after taking a few bites as they were going to make me sick and the barman-waiter took it as personal offense. Red-faced and tipsy he snatched up the plate and mumbled, "i'm not dealing with this shit!" as he walked off. That was the rudest most ridiculous thing I ever saw. We laughed in befuddlement.. I mean it was too ridiculous to even get upset over. Anyway, we tried the schnitzel and the pork knuckle - pork was not aromatic and very bland while the schnitzel with paprika sauce was a horrible combo. My GOD did this bartender come up with this garbage? The sauce was disgusting and it drenched the breading of the schnitzel ruining the whole thing. It's a retirement community trap. I can't believe I had to venture out to Brooklyn to get my first taste of German hookers! In fact, I had a bunch of hookers this evening! They all tasted like sweet honey, and I still smelled like them the following morning! I love smelling like hookers! Yeah, I know, I could score hookers anywhere, but these hookers were strong and worth every penny. Some of them were even free! Our waitress kept bringing these hookers over to us and who were we to decline the hospitality? Hell no, I slurped up every one of them! Came here the other night for Mike B's UYE and had a great time. Wonderful atmosphere in a German restaurant adorned by rich woods, beer maiden garb, and terrific beers. Our waitress was attentive and funny. In fact, the whole staff was. She brought us over so many free German Hooker shots it became quite aware to us that we were getting sloshed this evening. On top of that, that bartender started sending over German Chocolate Cake shots. Amazing thing with this is that you have to eat a slice of lime with sugar on it before doing the shot to bring out the chocolate flavor. Sounds crazy, and I still think this is a screwed up joke, but it did taste like chocolate cake! I think we ended up getting more free shots than the shots we actually paid for. Bonus! Oh yes, there was some pretty good food eaten in between all the shots. Sausage platter with bratwurst, knackwurst, weisswurst, keilbasa, bauernwurst, sauerkraut, potatoes, and red cabbage. All washed down with large glasses of Spaten and Warsteiner. All the while we noticed the staff was nipping at the shots themselves, so you know this is a fun type of place. Good food, good drinks, and drunk staff! Our waitress was a blast and kept goofing on us the whole night. Had a great evening here with Mike, Leslie, Simon, Ming, and Stacey. Have been here a few times before and the food is good! Inconvenient that the place is cash only, but something we deal with when we want to go. But today had a disappointing experience. I was out with my husband, kids and in-laws to participate in Small Business Saturday. I love supporting the local stores. We were deciding on a place to stop for lunch and I saw in the "5th Ave BID" pamphlet we received at a local bank that Schnitzel Haus was having a good discount in celebration for Small Business Saturday that included 15 percent off the total bill. So we decided to go there. Upon sitting down we asked the waiter if the 15 percent discount was in effect. He didn't seem to know what we were talking about so he called his manager (a female but I don't know her name). She told him to tell us that the discount started TOMORROW. Our waiter was very nice and helpful the whole time and, of course, we could have easily walked out as soon as we heard there was, in fact, no discount, but we decided to stay. Seemed like the waiter knew he had a long night ahead of him, having to clarify that the "Small Business Saturday" discount actually didn't take place on Small Business Saturday, but instead on Sunday. Reminds me of those signs in Irish bars: "Free beers tomorrow." Could it have been a misprint on the part of the pamphlet? I don't know. But if the discount wasn't applicable the restaurant shouldn't have even been included in the pamphlet at all. And there were only nine shops included to start with. Wasn't a giant list with lots of room for error. And it was implied in the pamphlet thAt the deals for the restaurants and stores were ONLY for today. Just seemed super shady. OMG, I enjoyed the House salad with Dijon vinagrette (and so did my friends). That house salad is homemade: big chunks of carrot and cucumbers. One of my friends selected the Bacon Vinagrette (omg, that is AMAZING and light too). Then my entrée of veal schnitzel arrived. I didn't care much for it. Just returned from dining al fresco at Schnitzel Haus in the mist of this pandemic. Social distancing and face mask were maintained and followed. Hand sanitizer station were at the ready. The Bavarian food and experience did not disappoint. I had the pork jaeger schnitzel and my bf the pork paprika schnitzel. Both were very good and nicely seasoned with a side of bacon potatoes and salad. My drink was a refreshing white summer sangria. Our server was very nice, courteous and a genuine workhorse. Sometimes, I like to play a game in Bay Ridge called " if i find a parking spot, we eat at whatever is closest" Schnitzel House was the winner of this game, this rainy Saturday night. We ordered the potato dumpling for an app and the waitress offered to bring out gravy with it (apparently the menu deems it served plain) Gravy was a great idea, you could tell it was a nice homemade style with real mushrooms and it was quite tasty. I had a hard time deciding for my entree. I wasn't Too hungry. I almost got the sausage appetizer, I variety of sausages. I still want that. Instead I okayed the special: Pork belly. How could I say no to pork belly? Honestly I imagined a nice size slab of fatty crispy pork and some side accompaniment....but what I got was a huge tower of food served on a thick wooden cutting board type thingy ....my eyes were like oh no! Too. Much. Food. Again, how could I resist pork belly? I dove in and demolished as much as I could in one sitting. As I was eating, some guy across from us was served a food that crunched as he cut into it and I was infinitely curious and couldn't stop staring. I asked the waitress and she said it was a pork item from the menu I forget which maybe a shank? Any how, my friend had a chicken paprika dish served as cutlets although menu says chunks? So we stumbled on the Schnitzel Haus while on a foray to Bay Ridge to get supplies for Greek Easter. We went at lunchtime thinking we could check out one of the many Middle Eastern restaurants, not realizing they all would be closed for Ramadan. We had an excellent lunch for a reasonable price given the portion size. The schnitzel was crispy and not at all oily. Went here during restaurant week and got the prefix menu. I got the chicken schnitzel and it came with some unseasoned potato pasta. the chicken was like eating a fried slipper. the dessert was just as bad it was store bought chocolate cake with ok whipped cream. the manager had the audacity to bad mouth my sister who complained about the gravy they tried charging us we didn't even touch it. we used to like coming to this place but now I wouldn't consider it as a option read more

I wanted to love this place but was disappointed. Fish & chips were super disappointing -- fish was sort of withered (definitely came from a frozen package) and the fried coating was burned. We also go the farmer's feast platter. The roasted pork was tasty, but the rest of the meat was really unexceptional & pretty bland. It was also such a massive amount of meat that it felt really wasteful. The red cabbage was way too sweet --it tasted like they added a ton of sugar. I usually love cabbage but could hardly make myself eat more than a couple mouthfuls. Beer was good. If they refreshed the menu and maybe pared it down to a dozen items that are really exceptional, they might do better in attracting new customers. read more

Rustic decor, friendly staff/owners, nice location, great food, and gigantic cold beers. Yeah...we love the Schnitzel Haus. My wife and I were in Berlin last year and fell in love with this little unassuming, old-world bar/restaurant on our corner called "Metzer Eck." The Schnitzel Haus in Bay Ridge is the closest we have come in the States to experiencing that magic place again. Schnitzel Haus is not frilly, or fancy; and it doesn't have any pomp or pretense. It's just a homey, down-to-earth spot to get authentic German food and drink in Bay Ridge. We have dined in several times, tried many items on the menu, drank to our heart's content, and we have never been disappointed here. We particularly like the Jaeger Schnitzel, Paprika Schnitzel, the Brats, and the Kielbasa. The food has always been good, the drinks have always been cold (and huge!) and the owners/staff have always been very friendly to us. My wife and I love the Schnitzel Haus and it's a regular date spot for us. Can't wait to be back again! read more

Even though I moved out of Bay Ridge, I've made it a point to pay a visit here whenever possible. As with most other restaurants, their business has been hit really hard by the pandemic & they're struggling. If you've never eaten here give them a try. Some may consider the entrees pricey, but the portions are enormous, believe me, and you'll likely be taking leftovers home for your following day's lunch. Yes, I had the Schweinebraten. Yes, I know that crispy pork skin is laden with artery-clogging fat. No, I don't regret ordering the Schweinebraten. Who knew such a simple meal could be so good? I mean really there are only three components: a large chunk of roasted pork, mashed potatos, and gravy. It was delectable. The raspberry beer ($10) was also a high note here. The service is top-notch as well; my waiter was very polite and attentive. All of these factors aside, though, I'm giving four stars instead of five because I had high hopes for the apple strudel and it was a huge let-down. As a lover of sweets, it pains me to say that. First, they did not have vanilla ice cream... my waiter didn't tell me about this, he just assumed that chocolate ice cream would be ok instead... but I don't like chocolate ice cream and I would not have ordered the strudel had I known that vanilla ice cream was not available. In addition, the strudel itself was nothing to rave about. It wasn't sweet, and it also wasn't savory. I wouldn't recommend. Just a heads up: they accept cards. This is my second time eating food from here. The first time was a long time ago (def a few years) and I remember having the Sauerbraten with Spätzle which was alright. So today we ordered from here and ordered: -Käsespätzle -Hähnchenschnitzel - Side of Jäger gravy - Side of red cabbage - Kartoffelpuffer - Brezel (Sadly I forgot to take pictures) I am a german native so I would love to fix the menu mistakes when it comes to the spelling because it's driving me nuts. As much as i appreciate them wanting to make the menu authentic - please have someone check your spelling before using it officially. It simply adds to your authenticity. Also be consistent with it and don't switch to English halfway through the menu (at least on Seamless where we ordered). Service: The Service was excellent and the food actually came before the given time frame even started. It was quick and the food was warm! Food: I had the Käsespätzle which cost $15. I asked for warm bacon as an add on - which was missing. The Spätzle covered with cheese were really good, the flavor of the cheese was delicious! The Spätzle that had nothing on them tasted watery. The whole dish had way too many onions underneath it which weren't that great either. Still enjoyable but not great tasting. Also compared to the Schnitzel for $16 the amount of Spätzle was really not a lot. The Schnitzel which my husband ordered was good. Good texture, flavor and amount of food! The Jäger gravy oder Jägersoße as I would say in German was good. Only the texture was more liquidy than expected. The red cabbage was definitely better than the last time we ate at "Zum Stammtisch" another German restaurant. It was a good texture and flavor. The Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes) were delicious- especially with the apple sauce it came with! Mmmh ! My favorite of the order! The Brezel was also super delicious and a perfect size! I definitely don't think that this place has the best German food but it's good enough for being close to it and you have a hankering for German Cuisine. Three stars for this place. I haven't found a German restaurant that i would give five stars yet. And "Zum Stammtisch" (which I would give four stars) has better food than this place so it gets the next best thing. read more

This place offered some of the best hospitality I've felt in awhile. We came in last week for my friend's birthday and the staff here was making sure everything was going well with us. Upon arrival they helped me figure out what I wanted out of a very wide selection of beers. I let them know exactly what I was looking for. My beer was cold, frothy, and delicious. As more friends arrived we began to order some appetizers. We had wurst samples, potato salad, escargot, and pretzels. All were delicious. During this time the staff came around and made sure my glass was filled with whatever I was in the mood for next. For mains, I had some of the best pork schnitzel I've ever had. Top of the line. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the spatzle. Not as good as some of the I've had in my life. Still the was only one minor issue in an over fabulous experience. Wurst sampler was so awesome. The pork shank was so juicy and flavorful. The potion of it was huge piece of meat cause we ordered the large for 2. What was on our mind? The sauage sampler was good but if u order the wurst sampler was better. We love the potatoe salad. Our desert was the apple strudel which was my husband's choice and he loved it. It wasnt overly sweet and on the side of a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream which we both loved. Staffs were so helpful and friendly made our night so enjoyable. Dear Owner Alfred, In response to you refuting my statement about the beer expiration date, please do not insult my intelligence. It was not a production date, best by date or born on date, the bottle said "EXP 05/2018" when it was served to us in November. An expiration date is an expiration date. Is it poison to drink if it's expired? No. Does it lose it's quality and flavor? Yes. Does it make your restaurant look suspect to serve expired beers? Yes. Instead of trying to make a customer seem like they don't know what an expiration date is perhaps you should increase the quality of your food, beers and service. read more

I ordered from here for the first time and was super excited since I typically love a good schnitzel. I unfortunately was very very disappointed. The chicken schnitzel was thick and rubbery with absolutely no taste. And then there was the spaetzel which tasted like plain boiled pasta. It was strange I'm not sure if this is their usual but there was no seasoning on anything!! The one thing I did enjoy was the potato pancakes which is why I gave two stars. This place is not cheap and yet provides food with 0 flavor or texture. Unfortunately right now I'm cooking a meal since I'm hungry because the food was that bad. The service is extremely friendly and quick, though they never ever rush you out. The food is exquisite . I used to have the veal, but for personal reasons only, switched to the salmon. Both are as tasty as anything in Bay Ridge... Mashed potatoes, French fries, and spinach are equally tasty. Prices are reasonable, maybe even on the inexpensive side considering the rise in prices of restaurants the last couple of years There's an upstairs which hosts local rock bands on weekends. It has the loft atmosphere of the 60s and 70s that is impossible to find anymore. You young people need to experience it to know what I mean. (The only thing missing is a room full of smoke from cigarettes and what have you LOL). The only cautionary tale I have to tell us that there have been 2 periods where they didn't take credit cards.
