Very hard to find a German restaurant in Brooklyn, let alone a good one! This place is amazing! The food is authentic and wonderfully delicious. Hubby and I love going there. Took my husband there for his birthday last Friday and we had a wonderful meal. Started off with our favorite soup (a must have) the Goulash Soup. I could drink the broth by itself. We had potato pancakes for our appetizer and for dinner we tried something different, we had the fish and chips. The "chips" were excellent and the fish was perfect. It was lightly bier battered which was a pleasant change from the overly battered fish we've had at other places. It was definitely more fish than batter. This summer they have a refreshing change of pace, a summer sangria! The summer sangria is wonderful, the only problem is that it's so delicious, you need at least two! It is a nice German pub and they have a nice roof garden as well. Good selection of German beer and food is hearty and decent. I order lunch from here and they only have it on Thus-Sat and no delivery so pick up. The beef was done right and salad was with some blue cheese crumble so overall good. Go on Thursday for prime rib night. Simply the best I have ever had. And at 17.99 a dinner, you just can't go wrong. Top it off with a nice cold Kolsch beer and you are in heaven. So I normally am not a potato person but I have to tell you two of my favorite items on there menu is the potato dumplings and the cold potato salad. They pair perfect with any of the meats on the menu. The pork shank is delicious, tender inside and crispy skin on the out! If you order that be prepared to wait a bit as it's made to order and takes a bit. All the "wursts" and variety of game meat sausages they have are excellent! I had my bridal shower here yesterday 08.18.18 from 12pm - 3 pm that my Bridal Team had planned out for me. Our bridal shower took place on their second floor. As we walked in this afternoon, it was clean, well air conditioned and was greeted upon entering by a man (possibly owner?). We were informed to go upstairs where it took place. My husband and I were both surprised of how it looked inside with their dark woody feel of the restaurant and some unique decors. Because my husband is British, it was a perfect place to bring in some of the feel of a pub back in England which is similar in ways. The room was nicely decorated by my bridal team. A plus is that you were able to bring your own decorations and flowers.It was definitly more than spacious enough for us 21 guest in total. We had 2 long rectangle tables to fit us all with clean white table cloths. The restaurants lady and her daughter (I'm assuming) took care of our party generously for those 3 hours. They made sure we had our drinks, food and additional things that was needed or asked for. Throughout this whole 3 hours spend there, everyone lefted having a good time. Overall from my guest's opinion, they loved the salmon, sausage and pork bested. Definilty recommend trying it out and will be back for more. read more

4 and a half stars easy. I want to start off by saying it probably does deserve 5 stars. But I am waiting for a second visit to award 5 stars. When I give 5 stars it means it's the best of it's kind. We have tried many German restaurants in NYC and they are all similar. But this one is the exception! If it is a common cuisine like Chinese it would be hard to do 5 stars because it is so common. If it is for example I have 5 stars for an Indian Chinese restaurant. There are only a handful in NY so it is the best of a handful. That isn't as hard to pull off. I am not comparing all restaurants to each other. I gave Gramercy Tavern 5 stars. I dont compare them all to Gramercy. I only compare the same cuisine to each other. Hot dogs against hot dogs and so on. The German restaurants we have been to in NY are all very common with the menu and ambiance. This restaurant has the most unique menu with a larger variety than any other German restaurant and what they did have was unique. But I am reserving 5 stars for a second visit. I found this on Phil's page and also see that a very reliable Yelp friend gave it 5 stars Liana L and Phil H both rated it 5 stars. Then I saw a bunch of other friends gave it 4 and 5 stars. Sanrdra B on my friends list also gave it 5 stars. The 5 star rating system is always what throws me off! ratings can't be accurate with a 5 star rating system! Worst German food EVER. Worst service EVER. Shall I go on? I have had German food in Germany and in California. I KNOW what schnitzel is supposed to taste like. I know what good service is supposed to entail. I also know when I'm having a VERY bad time at a restaurant. First of all, find out when their STUPID KARAOKE is being held. I visited on a Saturday night and it seemed like this musical debacle completely screwed everything up at the restaurant. I don't know if the cooks are also setting up for the band OR WHAT. We were seated BEFORE this garbage started (I had no idea how bad it was going to be until it began). I figured that it would be a pleasant experience to have some accompaniment to our dining. Boy was I wrong. This is a version of karaoke where a live band plays behind terrible singers. It's NOT conducive to your digestion--maybe drinking copious amounts of alcohol, but I digress. I wanted to take my gracious hosts out for dinner on my last night in New York. This was my best friend from childhood and her husband. We were looking forward to catching up since I had been at meetings every evening during my stay. We didn't visit this restaurant back in 2012 as THEY DON'T ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS and I wanted to expense it. Yes, it's 2014 and they don't accept plastic. What's up? Why do you insist on all cash? Would a cc company actually expect you to server palatable food? We were seated promptly and asked about drink order. Ok, so far so good. We also asked for ice water all the way around. That did not arrive with the other drinks. Hmmm. Our server returned to take our order and it seemed like everything was going smoothly. Time passed. And then more time passed... The band continued to set up their equipment and NO ONE ELSE HAD ANY FOOD. This seemed odd. ONE ENTIRE HOUR WENT BY BEFORE WE GOT OUR TERRIBLE SALADS. Ok, German restaurants aren't known for their side salads, but it would be nice if they didn't use Wishbone Italian as their dressing. Seriously? You know the flavor. It's awful. Then we waited even MORE time for our entrees to come out. Fine. I just wanted to not be hungry anymore. I cut into my Jaeger Schnitzel and it was bone dry. The flavor was terrible. There wasn't any seasoning. It was like they threw the meat into some bread crumbs and fried it. Sauce? What sauce? There was a TINY bit of sauce with three mushrooms. Don't get me started about the spaetzel. ZERO flavor. My friend's husband had never had it and he couldn't get beyond one bite. It was a pile of mushy blandness. I have had school lunches that were more interesting than the garbage they served. Seriously. When I bandied about that analogy, everyone agreed that's what they felt like. That we had been served slop from some grumpy old ladies in a cafeteria. I couldn't finish my schnitzel. It was that bad and flavorless. My friends didn't finish their dinners either. To top it off, we had to hear some of Bayridge's Finest belting out tunes while we waited. Is this some sort of plan to keep you there while they prepare your food for an hour? Pretty huge portions! I was really surprised when I came here because I've passed by it so many times and I finally got to try this place out. While this place is probably known best for their imported beers, I was taken away and sold when I got the potato salad. Mmm. Creamy red potatoes in ranch? I'm not sure, but it was realllly filling. I had a potato leek soup, it got watery as it sat for awhile. Though the complimentary bread is AMAZING. I'd come back mostly for the bread and dishes other than the soups though. The bread was really a bunch of assorted crispy and toasty rolls and one actually had an onion/cheesy(?) filling. I think the lamb is great, but I ended up taking my order to go. Portions were an overkill for me haha. Well I'll definitely be back by the end of the summer. I did recommend my friends to go give this place a go. Have been here three times. Twice last year, once last week. Strike one, two, three, yer out!! Food is hardly authentic. I kept telling myself, maybe text time, maybe its an off night, etc. not so. Consistently lacking, bad bad service, poor food. staff, know your beers! Is that too much to ask? Know what the beers are, know what they taste like. Also when serving the food, which takes forever to arrive by the way, please identity what is being served. If I order a sausage platter please tell me what is what. C'mon. Some of the food tastes like it came from a can or box. Weird metallic tin taste. Spaetzel has been dry and flavorless all three times I've tried it. pretzel not good. cabbage is good but the kraut was strange. Schnitzel is okay. Have had much much better and authentic German and Bavarian food in the countless beer halls in NYC, queens and Brooklyn. This place is a missed opportunity. Big time. So many things are "off." Like the set up for instance should be more welcoming, and this place needs a real good scrub down. I used to love this place! What happened? The food used to be amazing. The staff used to be superb. I ordered a schnitzel and it was dry. My BF got a dry pork roast. The beer selection is still great, if you get a clean glass. The service has gone down since we were last there in December 2013. Our waitress (an owner) was rude and never came back. The bartender was telling everyone how sick he is. Thanks want the guy breathing on my drinks to announce his virus. There were guys cursing and yelling at the bar. Come on we're on a date... Hmm, I could have sworn I had written a review for this place. A while back, fellow yelper Mike B. had set up an UYE to dine at this place. I never had any German food, I decided to try it plus it was close by so why not. I ordered the wurst platter which I shared with 2 other people...yea it was that much food. It came with 5 different brats, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut and 3 kinds of mustards. I came back with a friend and we both ordered a schnitzel, the rahmschnitzel, which came with 2 pieces of schnitzel, salad and fries. Out in the far reaches of Brooklyn, on a block marred by a horrible taco joint run by Chinese people, there's the shining light of the Schnitzel Haus and the boisterous sounds of an oompah band. Well... it wasn't an oompah band. More like a rock 'n' roll band. But hey, still music!! We came for a later dinner and were promptly seated upstairs at about 8:30pm on a Saturday. Our server was knowledgeable, quick, and affable, and got us started with some beers while we perused the menu. I ended up opting for the Rahm Schnitzel, and others got Schweinebraten and the Sausage Sampler. (I was able to sub the fries that came with the Schnitzel for spaetzle at no extra charge.) All of these dishes are a bit more than $20. Why, you ask? THEY'RE FREAKING ENORMOUS!!! EVERY DISH FEEDS ALMOST 2 PEOPLE!! TOTALLY WORTH IT! Not to mention that most dishes came with a side salad where one of the dressing choices is "bacon dressing." How can you turn that down?? And the bread is hot, crusty and really delicious. We mainly think we got screwed over by eating too much bread to begin with! Either way, this tactic resulted in delicious leftovers, so no regrets. Good beer, but sub par food. When I first heard of this establishment, I was delighted to discover that I can now get schnitzels near my house; cause you know, I love me some schnitzels. Soon enough, I found myself sitting at one of their tables, eagerly waiting for a taste of their veal schnitzel and bratwurst. The bratwurst was relatively good, but the schnitzel was terrible. It was dry, and slightly burnt. Admittedly, I came at a time when they were about to close, and I wouldn't be surprised if they just threw everything together haphazardly due to time constraints. Since I wrote my first review almost 4 years ago, I decided to give you an update. You might be surprised to learn that a German restaurant has delicious chicken, but, it's true! The grilled chicken is tender and moist, but the special taste is due to the paprika that's added to the meat. What a great combination of flavors! I've had the burger (well done) and it was cooked to perfection - just the way I ordered it. I can recommend the fresh vegetables that come with the chicken. Moist, fresh, with a hint of butter. I really like the red cabbage, too. I've found the service to be solid and dependable. Others have mentioned the prices, but I feel that the dishes here are properly priced based on the quality of the food and the value that I get for a meal. I'm not really sure what's better than beer and meat, but since this place has them both and they're great. I went with a group of 4 and we ordered appetizers, soup, and entrees and nothing we had was even average (all above average). The appetizer sausage platter, the potato leak with bacon and chedder soup, egg noodles (spaetzle, which are addicting), basically everything was just awesome (even the vegetarian platter which one of my friends had). Top top it off, they even had my favorite Belgian Beers (Lambics). The desert looked fantastic, but the generous portions prevented all of us from being able to save room for desert. I got the peach lambic and LOVED it- very sweet! Then we got the house pretzel- solid, with multiple types of mustard, and the yummy free bread. (Really, shout out to them for still doing free bread. So good, and warm too!) Mom got the pork schnitzel and I got the house schnitzel (pork schnitzel with fried eggs, capers, and anchovies.) I expected mine to come topped with the capers/anchovies, but they were served to the side, so if those are no-go foods for you, you could definitely still order the dish. They did add a good flavor to the food, though! I got the warm bacon dressing for the salad, and the warm potato salad for my side. Both seemed to be lacking in salt/acid for our tastes. What is there not to love about this place? Huge, inexpensive servings of good beer (and a variety of it to boot) joined by gargantuan, delicious servings of authentic German food. On my second or third visit to this establishment years ago, the owner/chef wanted to come downstairs and ask how I liked the food. Who knew the Germans could be so darn hospitable (cheap shot, I know). The selection across the board is very good, if not outstanding. I can't speak to much of the menu because I'm a sucker for wurst, and the sampler platter is the way I go (that I'm sure they have on the menu as an option for feeding a crowd, not just one hungry fat guy). The kids meals are all solid (particularly the goulash). If you're in the area, definitely a place worth visiting repeatedly. If you're not in the area, it's worth visiting repeatedly. If you're driving though, bring an unsuspecting designated driver to volunteer, unless beer is not your thing (and if that's the case, shame on you). read more

What I didn't mention about the Schnitzel debacle in Philadelphia is that when we eventually returned to our car, it was locked in the parking garage forcing us to take a cab back to our hotel. What a culinary mess that night was. I figured parking in Brooklyn wouldn't be easy and sure enough, there was nary a spot to be found. I told my GPS to direct me to the nearest parking garage which was about 1 mile away from Schnitzelhaus. As I pulled in, the proprietor informed me that the garage was closing in one and one half hours. Great. I'm going to have to hustle tonight to get my Schnitzel. It was about a one mile walk from the parking garage to Schnitzelhaus. It is a decent, ethnically diverse neighborhood so there was plenty to see on the walk. The weather was nice so it was an enjoyable walk. I made my way to the bar and the friendly bartender informed me that they were a bit busier than usual and the food was running slow. Just what I needed - a slow kitchen while I was under a time constraint. But I appreciate the bartenders forthrightness. I'd rather hear that news than be lied to. Without looking at a menu I asked him if they could bring out a Schnitzel in fairly short order and he didn't think it would be a problem. My meal came with a salad - a nice leafy salad with a few vegetables on the sides. It was a nice starter but nothing remarkable. About halfway through my mug of HB Maibock (and 20 minutes after placing my order) a plate with 2 medium sized Wiener Schnitzels was placed in front of me. I immediately noticed that it looked a tad shiny (aka greasy). But I could also immediately tell that this meal was freshly made. After a string of reheated "Schnitzels" that I have been served, I was very happy to finally have a fresh Wiener Schnitzel in front of me. The Schnitzel was very crisp and had a nice flavor to it. It didn't have the nice crunch that I'd like but that is being a bit nitpicky on my part. Unlike the gummy reheated Schnitzels, this one was easy to cut through and despite the shiny appearance it wasn't greasy tasting at all. This was a well crafted Schnitzel - you could tell that there was some care given back in the kitchen, Further proof of a quality Schnitzel is that the breading didn't pull apart from the veal. I had some time to read the full menu. Boy, Schnitzelhaus has some really great sounding food on the menu, some of it bordering on gourmet. If I ever make it here again, I'm absolutely going to dig into some of the really interesting sounding foods found on the menu that I hadn't eaten before. Due to my rush, I didn't order a side of Rotkraut or Spaetzle so I can't comment on the quality of those sides. But based on the food I tasted and the food I saw coming out of the kitchen, I have no doubts that these sides would have tasted great (unlike the reheated sides found at so many other German restaurants). The Wiener Schnitzel was served with the traditional french fries as a side, though these were curly fries akin to the fries served at Arby's. Personally, I would have preferred standard fries to the flavored curly fries but that's a personal preference. On their own, they were good fries just not what I was in the mood for. I made it back to my car in the parking garage with plenty of time to spare. I am very glad I more or less randomly chose to visit Schnitzelhaus (OK with that name, how can I not go there?). I so rarely make it to New York City but if I do make it back at some point, I certainly plan on a return visit to Schnitzelhaus. read more

Authentic German food isn't something you can easily find in NYC, but boy did I find it! Their beer menu is an extensive list of german and belgium beers. For the appetizer i shared Würst- Sampler which had wild boar, duck, spicy lamb, rabbit venison cherry. I couldn't believe how each was so good, after eating one I would decide it was my favorite then move on to the next and now had a new favorite. Also they are served with 3 types of mustards which are all amazing. For my main course I had rouladen. This dish really made me feel like home since the last time I had it my mother made it! My boyfriend had the Würstteller mit allem Drum and Dran, which is really just 5 different types of würst. He loved it! I've also been to the german restaurant in queens and that is good too, but I kind of prefer this place. Just remember to wear your stretchy pants because you will feel THAT full after. Luckily I live more than a mile away so its a good walk home! read more

Went there with my husband for Friday date night. The food was delicious. The grapefruit beer is light and summery. We loved the staff. I would definitely go back there for another date night or even girls night. Their beer selection is awesome. read more

Friendly neighborhood place with hearty german food. To be honest I've probably had some better german food (I might be a bit spoiled, my mom's german and I've been over there many times)- but good german food is kind of hard to find around here, so that said this place rates pretty high. To me it's like the chef has taken all the old time german favorites (think meat fest) and adapted them for the american palette. But the kitchen knows what they're doing so it's all good. Go there hungry as the portions are serious. They also have a great selection of hard to find german beers at the bar. And if you stick around on a Saturday they usually have some live music; you might just have some fun with some of the local characters..I know we did. read more

Ya voll for this cute, kitchy German spot with a waitress that speaks with a German accent. Lots of wood and beers on tap(9) here at the haus. I ordered a hefewiezen(Weihenstepan) on tap to go with my meal. White wheat beer and lots of it for $7 bangers. Delish. For lunch, I ordered a potato leek soup with bacon and cheddar. The soup was satisfying though nothing special. Real cheddar instead of the generic yellow stuff would have been a better accent. Now for the good stuff. Grilled bratwurst with homemade saurerkraut with bacon and yummy spaetzle for $8. Classic German soul food that warms the insides on a chilly day. read more
