Breakfast on the way out of town after a last minute trip north. Quiet and dated place but the food was fresh, huge helpings and super tasty. The two gals working were both friendly and attentive! I don't typically write reviews, but this café warrants special consideration. Ambience is cozy, wood ceilings and walls quite the noise level. Our server was polite and friendly, easy-going. The food is what floored me. I ordered hashed browns with scrambled eggs with a sausage gravy. In most other establishments the hashed browns and gravy have that "fresh off the back of a truck" flavor. But this place must make it all from scratch. Most other places wear out my pallette, but I could have their food eaten all day if my digestive system could handle it. My wife ordered sweet rye toast with her meal, it was fantastic. Again, it tasted like it was made from scratch. Both our meals came with a little cup of plum bread pudding with a nice whipped cream topping. Once again, tasted like it was made in the kitchen by a skilled chef. We'll be back. read more

We were on our way to Grand Rapids on a frigid day when we decided to stop here for coffee. Amazing little place. We saw the huge caramel rolls and had to have one. They were fresh and warm and they scooped more caramel on our roll. They do all of their cooking and baking right there. We were also treated to a sample slice of sweet rye bread, warm from the oven. We ate part of the roll on the road and enjoyed the rest at breakfast the next morning. It must have been a two pound pastry. Can't wait for the next time that we can stop by again. read more

shhh...I don't want the ENTIRE world to know what a slice of heaven this spot is! I don't want them to know how unique/idiosyncratic SHC is...and for sure I don't want them to know how delicious their food is! Everything is made from scratch, cooked and baked by REAL people there. Right now with the Covid-precautions, it was not crowded at all in the cafe...our server not only gave us the best Northern Minnesota hospitality but we were able to try a piece of fresh-outta-the-oven sweet rye bread! It was the BEST sweet rye bread I have ever eaten (and bread is my weakness)...only to be blown away by their caramel roll (was worth it, if only by the portion size). Ultra soft, golden brown, sticky caramel rolls. We bought one for us to split-which was enough for both of us for TWO days! We can't wait to stop in again & pick up some homemade food to go! read more

Authenticity is a fetish of mine, I both love and critique it, and this place used to be a real old timey school house. It has kitsch and memorabilia hanging all over the walls and ceiling - good for entertainment value. Pancakes are extremely large, but my wife was not impressed with the quality; me, all pancakes taste the same, it's just a bunch of flour that you drown in sugar. The other food was good. A neat part about it though is that it's part of a whole kitsch complex or quaint little shops for tourists, and as quaint tourist traps go, it isn't all bad. Very disappointed! Service was beyond slow even with 4 people working. Everyone was nice and my 3 yr olds pancake was delicious! But my philly cheese steak was greasy and lacking in flavor and meat! My wife's hamburger was bland and the wait was horrible. 2 hours from the time we got there to when I paid the ticket. Only coffee place open for miles around... no eye contact... shady attitude shady comments that boarder racist. when I asked for sugar for my coffee I was told use the sugar from the dining tables. Decided to use a dirty table, to be courteous and not use a clean table. Damn waitress came in underneath me and said "I'll take that" as if I was going to steal her $1 tip. I was reading some of the other reviews, and, apparenty, John C. thinks this place actyually was a schoolhouse at one time. It was not. It is a "model" of an old, one-room schoolhouse, but never actually was one. Nonetheless, it still exudes all the same, country charm. The place is very tiny, (only three or four tables), and it can get bit cramped, but they make it work, and there is certainly enough room for any large party that gets there first. The menu has a good variety, and enough offerings to suit almost any appetite. They serve breakfast all day long. My wife had the stuffed hash browns, and I had the grilled veggie sandwhich. Everything was tasty, well-prepared, and fairly priced. The service was friendly, and accommodating. This place was nothing but a little love in a tiny, rural Minnesota town off the beaten path. I loved the history of the neighboring buildings, the gift shop, and the entire region. It was a real experience in Americana just to drive out here, and this cafe really sealed the deal. This is a very cute place but have waited almost an hour to get our breakfast. The service hasn't been that great. I have had to ask why it is taking an hour to get food and the response was,"I'm sorry the cook is going slow and the table in the corner has been waiting longer than us." So we sit and wait in the heat air conditioning must not be working because we are sweating now. We stopped for breakfast/lunch on our way to my parents' house. The coffee was delicious, the apple juice was generous and the hot cocoa my daughter ordered was so good she wouldn't share. Hubby and I shared biscuits and gravy and a country skillet. Both were fantastic. The hash browns of the skillet had a perfectly crunchy exterior married with a divinely creamy interior. The homemade sweet rye bread was wonderful. Our son had a burger, which he scarfed down. Our daughter had the "dads turn" breakfast-eggs were cooked perfect and the hash browns were too. Ok, first for those that decide if they are stopping based on reviews, it actually has 9 tables, one eight seat and the rest a variety of sizes. So don't drive by if you see a couple of cars in the lot. We stopped for breakfast. Biscuit and gravy was spot on, tender biscuits, great gravy. Loved the old schoolhouse, family theme, and the food and service were OUTSTANDINGLY AWESOME! We split the veggie stuffed hash browns (sooo flavorful anddelicious... no ketchup needed!) between two of us, and third person in our party had "Dad's Turn to Cook" breakfast. We wanted to also have an iced coffee schooler and cinnamon roll but were too full! The prices were good and the friendly service topped it all. We will definitely be back! read more

Our favorite restaurant for breakfast. It's worth the drive which is 30 minutes from our cabin. The veggie omelette is my favorite. You must try the homemade signature sweet rye toast. We drive through McGregor regularly on our commute from home in Mpls. to home outside of Deer River. We've enjoyed this place every time we've stopped. Clean, neat, good honest food, and served by real people. The menu has good variety and is not just cliches. Try the "Dagwood" sandwich but consider splitting it for two people. read more
