I've always enjoyed coming here. The coffee is consistently great, and that's one of the reasons I continue to return. Today's visit was disappointing. I ordered two avocado bowls and requested that two eggs be added to each bowl, for a total of four added eggs, which the cashier repeated back to me to confirm the order. I understood there would be an additional charge for the eggs. Unfortunately, when I got to my destination and opened the containers, each bowl only had one added egg, even though I was charged for a total of four added eggs. The avocado bowls are already on the expensive side, so it's frustrating to pay for something that wasn't provided. I immediately tried calling the café so I could speak with a manager and have the issue corrected, but my call was disconnected, and I wasn't able to reach anyone. I understand that mistakes happen, and I appreciate that the cashier entered the order correctly. My frustration is with the order not being prepared as requested and not being able to reach anyone to resolve the issue. I hope the team can be more attentive to verifying orders before they leave the kitchen and ensure customers have a reliable way to contact someone when there is a problem. It's hard to review this visit because it could very much have been impacted negatively by the holiday weekend. There was a line of customers wrapped around the outside of the building the Friday before Independence Day and the service felt it as we were rushed through our ordering. They ran out of pastries before 10am and seemed a bit flustered by trying to handle the huge crowd. They also gave me Nitro cold brew when I only ordered the regular but it was way too chaotic to try and ask for a redo, I just dealt with the wiry aftereffects. The Nitro quality was honestly solid--nice and fruity but just a bit lukewarm--which was tough considering it was served without ice. My wife's ube matcha was top heavy in its sweetness but then the leftover matcha underneath was too bitter. Overall the experience just felt too disorganized and haphazard. There was little ambience with so many people standing around hovering over the seating but at least the air could flow through the opened doors. Again, though, I'm empathetic to the idea that an unexpected rush of holiday travelers could have strongly impacted the morning staff, so I want to keep an open mind... But the drinks themselves coming in underwhelming was the biggest bummer. It might be more your speed in their normal day-to-day service, though, so I'd still recommend giving them a shot! read more

This is my go to spot when I'm in the Monterey / pacific grove area! The cafe is super aesthetic with ample seating, both inside and outside. Love that parking is usually pretty easy to find. Very late review as they now have a new seasonal menu. One of my favorite stops in the area aside from Revival Ice Cream. I highly recommend this coffee shop. The fallback drink of choice is their vanilla iced latte. I do try to seasonal offering if they look appealing. I noticed the fly situation is getting worse though. Popped in here last Tuesday morning after yoga as it was across the street from the Monterey Gym. We found across the street parking and didn't have to wait too long for a table. I went for their croissant sandwich (forgot the name) but they gave me extra veggie instead of the ham. I love that avocado is everywhere in CA. The croissant was fluffy and buttery and delish! The matcha latte was more of a green tea latte. They use an organic blend by Rishi. So it's not a traditional ceremonial grade matcha. But it was fine. Absolutely love Captain + Stoker! We had stayed in Monterey for a night and needed a pick me up before a long day, and thankfully found this spot. There was a line, but it was well worth the wait! The baristas were friendly and the atmosphere was so good. Stayed in to enjoy our lattes and pastries. The coffee was fine, but I consumed the juice gradually throughout the day. When I reached about one-third of the bottle and attempted to drink the chia seeds at the bottom, I noticed the texture was unusually chunky and felt extremely strange--similar to shards. I immediately spat the contents back into the bottle and inspected it. Upon closer examination, I discovered what appear to be shards of glass inside the drink. This has caused me significant distress and concern for my safety, as I may have unknowingly consumed some of the contaminated product. I love it when specialty drinks do not just taste of sugar. The coffee had a toffee-ish caramelized note to it but was also slightlly acidic. They ran out of their famed almond croissant by the time I got there at 10 AM, so I guess it's an excuse to go back next time! We are here visiting from Roseville so I read reviews to find a coffee house close to our hotel. It's worth mentioning the 2 men ahead of us in line (a local guy and out of towner) the local guy walked in with a Starbucks cup. They have no overhead menu. My husband just gets black coffee (large dark roast). They only have 1 size super small and no dark roast. I ordered a chai latte with whipped cream and they do not have whipped cream at all. My family wanted to try out the coffee here and was kind enough to bring me back a matcha latte. I usually add a touch of sweetness to my matcha, but they forgot this time. I found the matcha to be more bitter than other matcha I've had. Personally I like my matcha smoother without the bitterness. I'm not sure if it's the type of matcha they use here causing this. Unfortunately even after adding sugar to sweeten it, the drink just didn't have the cohesion I was hoping for. The vanilla syrup they make in house is supposed to be pretty good.
