Grasings is a very good fine meal option for Carmel with great menu that doesn't remain static. It shines as a singular Carmel restaurant when the town is moving towards too many restaurants owned by two groups that have turned into tourist food traps serving less than average food. However, the differentiator at Grasings is the bar and that differentiator's name is Kevin. If not for Kevin, we would still frequent from time to time but with Kevin we go in at least once weekly. Kevin and servers like Kevin are solid gold in Carmel and ensure 5 star ratings for atmosphere and service. When you find them you never have a bad experience in fact you are guaranteed a great experience. The menu caters to all, carnivores, seafood, steaks and vegetarians - love the veggie burger! Great place to meet locals and tourists, especially if Kevin is working. We admit that when we walk to Grasings and find that Kevin isn't working, we find another venue. That isn't a knock on Grasings but rather a nod to Kevin. read more

Disappointing experience this time around. We had a pleasant experience two days prior at the bar where we had great lunch and service was very pleasant. So we decided to return for dinner to dine at the main dining room. The food was good, but the service was atrocious. Our appetizers arrived immediately, but then we waited a long time for our salad, and our main course took so long to arrive that we decided we would take it as a to go as we didn't want to spend any more time at the restaurant. the dining room by then was already empty. To cap it all there was an extra bottle of wine added to our bill! If you think "we're just tourists" and "we will not see you ever again, so we don't have to deliver," you are wrong. Food: Crispy Calamari: These were tasty, though a bit on the oily side. Still, a solid start to the meal. Grasing's Crab Cakes: Perfection. Coming from Maryland, we have crab cake standards, and these were "all killer, no filler", great texture. Farmers Market Beet Salad: As it should, a very fresh dish; we added Salmon, which was cooked to perfection. Service: We had reservations and were seated right on time. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and kept the pace of the meal feeling relaxed but professional. "Space": As a total bonus, we ended up seated right next to NASA astronaut Ed Lu (veteran of STS-84 and STS-106)! He was incredibly kind, and we had a great chat--turns out his daughter is also starting at Cal Poly in the fall. Meeting a man who has performed a six-hour spacewalk on the ISS definitely elevated a "very nice lunch" to an unforgettable one. The restaurant forgot one of our party members dishes, it came 30 minutes after the others were served, the wait between appetizers and entrees stretched to well over an hour. There were other issues, but the sum total was a disappointing experience. The meal was supposed to be a special treat for our family and turned out to be a disappointment all around. Regardless, we tipped the servers 25% moved on with our evening, but it was frustrating to save up for a fun evening and have the event ruined by poor service, and lackluster management. I understand places can get busy, and people make mistakes, but if the restaurant is not staffed or equipped to create a nice experience at $250+ a person, they're not doing their job. Simply amazing. From the moment we arrived the restaurant provides such a welcoming environment. The food and ambiance were exceptional. We had two orders of the Filet Mignon and one order of the Braised Short Ribs. The steaks were cooked to perfection, extremely tender and flavorful. The Braised Short Ribs had wonderful texture. Both paired excellent with our wine. The deserts were equally amazing, we had the crème brûlée and tiramisu, but our favorite was the strawberry shortcake. They have a superior wine list. There are many places to dine in Carmel. We decided to experience Grasing's based on their reputation for excellence. Dinner was in celebration of a birthday. We had reservations and arrived a little early and were seated immediately. Our table was a window location facing 6th street. The table was decorated with Happy Birthday greetings along with a birthday card. Service from Andrew was prompt and food delivery timely. Inside the restaurant is quite packed in so our table was a little small and there was not a lot of personal space around anyone's tables. Our server was great, we were very taken care of the whole night. However, we did have to wait around 30 minutes outside the restaurant even though we booked a reservation for 6pm in advance. Because we got seated late, we stayed until they closed and it felt like we were being rushed out. Overall the food was phenomenal. Our early Father's Day lunch celebration at Grasing's went amazingly well and we all left happy and satisfied! From the ambience to the food and the service, we love them all! We had our puppy with us so we were on the look for a dog friendly restaurant. Grasing's is a few block away from the busy Main Street of downtown Carmel. It looks quaint and cottage-like from the outside. The server quickly checked us in and led us to our table in the cute patio behind the restaurant. There are around 5-6 tables at most at the patio. I highly recommend you make a reservation first before you come as tables are filled fast within 10-15 minutes of our arrival (around 12:15pm on a Saturday). We love that the patio is tucked away in a cute alley who gives us privacy. Our server was so attentive. They prompt brought us water and menu. And water and menu for my puppy as well! There are dog beds of all sizes you may use to make your puppy as comfortable as possible. We were so pleased with how attentive our server was. When we asked him to recommend a bottle of wine for us, he took time to ask about our preferences and helped us picked out the best bottle for our taste. He was so patient too to let us taste 2-3 types of wines before we decided which one we liked the best. The food was of generous portion. We particularly enjoyed the crab cakes. The front dining room where we were seated for our reservation is classy and no matter how many of us dined in that front part of Grasing's, the noise level was just right and kept the ambiance perfect for our dinner. We come to Carmel & Monterey annually for car racing. We've dined at Grasing's almost every year, but this time the food was too average to return again. It's bland & lacks quality. I had the sole & my husband has Alaskan halibut w/crab-it tastes like assisted living cafeteria food. The wine selection is great but the sommelier is a bit odd & tells us every time that we go that we've ordered the best wine they offer. He poured some & then attempted to keep a glass for himself which we were confused about. The pasta of the day was just red sauce meat pasta. Seafood pasta was average as well We heard the panna cotta here was great so we decided to to give it a try. It turns out to be the worst panna cotta I've ever had. Their strawberry panna cotta is just plain yogurt with strawberry sauce and dried strawberries. This is NOT how a panna cotta should taste. Lastly, we're very disappointed at their service. The restaurant decided to open the doors which cause a lot of flies to come in the restaurant. When we told the servers about this issue. We came with high hopes on the recommendation of a local and left disappointed. Two of our five meals were just fine, one was very good and two were poor. The sole meunière was the star of the evening, cooked perfectly and dusted off to the very last bite. The chipotle glazed half chicken was served raw at the thigh. Not slightly pink or full pink, it was raw. It was removed and returned with nary a word about the situation, which was not a matter of preference but a matter of safety. The waiter offered no apology for the error or for this person having to watch the rest of us eat our meals and then having to have her meal out of sync with the rest of the party. Nor was she offered a small plate while waiting for her refired entree. The thigh was now fully cooked, but the breast was now dry and tough. The manager did stop by later to apologize for the chicken. Overall insufficient response to a food poisoning risk that should never have left the kitchen. The prime New York steak, at $65, was clearly an end cut and much closer to sirloin. It was ordered medium rare but served closer to medium and thus a bit dry; and being the end cut was tough. We did not mention this due to the underwhelming response to the above situation with the chicken. The service was perfunctory, lacking warmth and leaving us feeling tolerated not welcomed. read more

Grasing's was awesome! I've heard nothing but good things and it definitely lived up to the hype. We found ourselves without brunch plans on a Saturday and were given some very long wait times at nearby spots. We were greeted by super friendly and accommodating staff all around. The main dining room was perfectly kept, not too loud, vaulted ceilings, nice and bright. The menu was explained thoroughly, servers and bussers were attentive and we felt well cared for. I'm shocked there were available tables considering how great it was. Food & Drinks: Broccoli Soup - light, savory, very yummy! Vegetable Sandwich - tasty, very filling, the side salad is huge and dressed well. Would've loved a more savory cheese on it. We ordered the 32 OZ prime rib for two which came with veggies and the rosemary goat cheese called potatoes which in my opinion was amazing. The steak was really good as well it paired well with the peppercorn sauce. The Mac n Cheese wasn't anything special and lacked in flavor but the overall meal was amazing. We visited Grasings in Carmel during our anniversary weekend and wanted to give this long standing restaurant a fair try. It is considered a classic in town, but the experience fell short for us. The ambiance reflects an older Carmel style, which can be charming, but in this case it feels slightly outdated. There is a way to preserve that classic Carmel character while still giving the space a refreshed, more inviting feel, and the restaurant would benefit from that balance. After ordering our appetizers, my wife and I both realized we would likely try another restaurant afterward, simply because the food did not stand out. To start, we ordered the calamari. It arrived dry and tasted like a frozen product rather than something freshly prepared. The breading was plain, the flavor was lacking, and it did not set a great tone for the meal. We added a Caesar salad with salmon, and again it was very average. The seasoning was minimal and there was nothing about it that made the dish memorable. For drinks, we tried the crab Bloody Mary. With a name like that, you expect one nicely presented piece of crab as the highlight. Instead, the drink was filled with small pieces that floated throughout, which affected the overall experience. What happened next was unexpected. Most bartenders will taste their creation discreetly before serving, but in this case the bartender served the drinks first, then came back afterward, asked if he may, and dipped a straw into my wife's drink to taste it, explaining he wanted to check the spice level. It created an uncomfortable moment and did not feel welcoming. This was a lunch service, the restaurant was not busy, and nothing happening around us suggested that the quality or attention should have been off. After that interaction, we paid the tab and left quickly. Grasings is a place you visit if you want an acceptable meal and the experience of dining at a Carmel staple. If you are in love with food, appreciate thoughtful execution, and enjoy memorable dining experiences, you may want to explore other options in the area. read more

We arrived 15 mins before our reservation time. The staff was setting up for service so we were asked to sit at the bar to wait. The bartender was awesome and offered up local dining advice per our request and gave us tastes of the wines we were choosing between. The dining area was comfortable and quiet so conversation was easy. The yellowtail crudo was good but lacked in seasoning and acidity. The cut on the fish was good though. The crab cakes were wonderful and had plenty of crab without a lot of the filler. The sauce to dip them in was also great. Hubby had the rack of lamb and said it was cooked to perfection and one of the best he has had. I had the New York steak and it was cooked to medium rare per my request. The Au Poivre sauce on the side was so tasty. I preferred it over the bernaise which I also ordered ($4/sauce side). The food was wonderful but the service was a bit off. I would have given 3.5 stars but that's not an option. Our server only checked on us one time. He never asked how our appetizers were and he only appeared to ask how we were enjoying our entrees until after we were well into them. He should have checked in on each course and also soon after our lamb and steak were delivered to make sure the cook and taste were on point. He never cleared anything from our table. The other staff gathered around together to chat or whatever and also didn't clear our plates or glasses. We had to ask. For a restaurant of this caliber I would def expect otherwise. They had the tables decorated with a rose you could take home and Valentine's Day themed confetti on the tablecloth. We were one of the first ones there for an earlier dinner. They had a special 3 course menu for Valentine's Day and it was $100 per person which was a good deal! My boyfriend and I ordered different food so we could try multiple dishes. We ordered 2 salads the Brussel sprouts and Tuscan kale salad and the beet salad and bread for the starter. The bread was whole grain and crispy. For the main dishes we ordered the prime rib eye filet and the seafood pasta. The pasta was black due to squid ink! For dessert, we ordered the creme brûlée and panna cotta. The portions were all big and I was so full by the end. The steak was very tender. The seafood pasta had a lot of seafood and didn't skimp and not too heavy. Everything tasted fresh. Definitely worth the deal! The service was impeccable! The bathroom is outside of the restaurant and you can go through the back door and they had a waiter waiting there just to open the door for people who needed to go outside. The dishes came out appropriately at the right time one by one and the food was hot when it arrived. I don't like cold/lukewarm food! They quickly brought him a water bowl and offered him a dog bed. Then our appetizers came out, Spanish octopus - 4/5 & beef carpaccio 3.5/5 (lacked seasoning), and the crab cakes 4/5. It looked and smelled great! We ordered it medium rare. As we looked at it, this steak was severely unevenly cooked. The edges were WELL DONE, then moving closer to the middle it was medium WELL and then the center was medium. We told the server who quickly apologized and took it back to the kitchen. Less than 5 minutes later, the server returns with the MANAGER, who then says, "I spoke to the chef and he said this is how they make the steak. Please just try it and you may like it." We reluctantly agreed, but it was just WAY too over cooked for our liking. We told the server. The manager came by again and said that he would have them make another one for us. Honestly, we were offended, but decided to stay and wait for the new steak but 40+ minutes later, our frustration grew and we were fed up. My husband wanted to leave and so did I. When the manager came out again, I told him we were ready to leave. He ensured that the steak was on the way out. When it finally did, it was cooked well BUT.... there was NO SEASONING on it whatsoever. The first OVERCOOKED steak, at least had flavor, this 2nd one, was flavorless!!! Ambiance 10/10. Food was delicious, 8/10, left feeling full, satisfied and happy, always good when that happens

I will give this 4/5 instead of 3/5 because the staff were really friendly and super helpful when I sneakily asked them to bring a birthday dessert out for my wife. The place is cute, but it was overpriced for what it was. My short ribs were tasty but not worth over $50. My wife had the vegetarian gnocchi dish, which was ~$45. It is just really expensive. I appreciate a fancy dinner out and am willing to pay for it. It was worth every penny when we went to Aubergine a few years back. I had a strawberry, mint, and lemon cocktail that I felt was too tart and needed some sweetness. We also had the beet salad for an appetizer, which had blood orange or orange pieces in it, which I felt made it too tart as well. When they served my short rib, the plate was piping hot, but the mashed potatoes were lukewarm, so it was not the most enjoyable bite for me.
