Nice location in a popular area of Ferndale. Their small gated front porch is dog friendly. We ordered 2 samplers to share and decide which flavors to take home in bottle. Neither one of us liked the ginger variety-- it was just too 'hot' on the palate for us. The other berry variations of mead were all delicious in their own way. My favorite was the blackberry. Disappointingly though, the flavors we wanted to buy in bottle were not available . We did some searching and found a bottle of BlackBerry at Mega-Bev in Kalamazoo. read more

When you order barbeque, it makes sense to order a beer. This turned me onto mead, at the bartenders suggestion. If beer could imitate a wine, this would be the result. Love at first sip! Wandered by here today at like 9:55pm (they close at 10) and the kind waiter let us in. I had a mead flight and my friend had a different mead flight and we mixed and matched. I've been giving more 5 star reviews on Yelp recently than I normally do but this place definitely deserves it! My flight was $7 and his was $8 I believe. It's pricey for the serving you get but so delicious. Mine had the traditional one which kind of tasted like sangria or red wine, plus a nutmeg one that tasted like autumn (honey, with a hint of nutmeg), and a ginger one that was a little too strong for me. He got the Agnes flight, I believe - one wasn't very sweet but the other two were, and like candy in a bottle. SO GOOD. I had never been here before even though I'm in Ferndale fairly frequently, and I'll definitely be stopping by another time to try more of its delectable mead. Yum. read more

My partner and I had a wonderful experience here! We have been waiting to try Schramms for awhile! We tried it I believe at a friends and also at the Renessance festival? My partner has read Kens book personally & implemented a similar technique in a small brew batch for experimental purposes (it turned out well!) this was super exciting for him of course! We went on a weekend about an hour and a half before they close. They close kind of early so we will have to plan better next time. The environment is very nice. Well decorated id say! They have gender neutral bathrooms which is cool! Im glad to see more places doing this! The staff was super knowledgeable and for a weekend night it was not crowded at all and actually very very quiet.. I suppose that you could say that mead drinkers seem a little bit more classy and reserved comparing to bar people/beer mixed drink people. Our bartender was Very knowledgeable and polite he helped us pick out the best option for us. We ended up going with a flight. It was Way better than we had anticipated!! Wow what a pallet! Sadly I cannot remember the names of each mead but the depth and complexity yet sweetness of the drinks were perfect! Tasting each one was honestly like going on an adventure with each drink being a lot to take in. Mead is something to be appreciated and not just slugged down. We actually really liked one of their limited time only selections But strangely enough by the time that we were done with the flight we were good!!! They were closing in 30 minutes so we didn't want to drink anymore. We sat and talked with the bartenders for the last bit, they assured us that they were in no rush to leave even after a hard days work. What a special place. I had the pleasure of sitting at the bar and chatting with the bartender. She was very helpful, insightful and knew a lot about the product. I always love when a place has a well educated staff. The flight and one ounce pours are a great addition to the menu as it gives you a chance to explore the menu without breaking the bank. The meads here are outstanding. I have head over and over again about how great there are and finally got to try some at the actual spot! The Smile of Fortune Amelia Black Agnes Red Agnes Blackberry Ginger Nutmeg And The Statement were all beautifully done. Out of them all black Agnes, the statement and smile of Fortune were my favorite. Nutmeg is a great addition to this time of year. Well done all around. So hey Ferndale, I'm not sure you're fully aware of what you have going on here, but you're basically the mead capital of the world now. I won't belabor Ken Schramm's credentials, but he knows a little bit about making mead. I had the opportunity to visit on a Thursday evening and I got to say hi to everybody and taste everything. The quality of the mead is really extraordinary. Huge quantities of extremely nice, locally sourced fruit goes into the mead. This is not easy or cheap to do. The production space is really tiny, the batch sizes are VERY small. It's a really good opportunity to get in on the ground floor with some investment quality bottles for your wine cellar. When you consider everything that goes into it, you realize what a great value it is for the price. These early batches are going to become very collectable going forward. Who will like this mead? Pretty much everybody, but specifically I would expect it to be popular among twenty-something women and craft beer lovers. Ferndale mixologists should also take note as Ken's mead would be a great start to many interesting cocktails. Mead is not a historical novelty. You don't have to be a Viking to drink it. Mead is modern, it is here and now. That being said, the American Craft Mead Movement is in it's Golden Age. The founders of the industry, people like Ken, are alive and creating new meads this very moment. It won't always be the way it is now. This is the very best time to get on board. read more

Schramm's Mead makes some of the best honey wine in the world. If you are a local you are lucky to have a world class meadery in your backyard. I'm from the west coast and made a 4 hour detour to visit Schramm's Mead. The staff was wonderful. They answered all my questions, and took care of my wife and I. The menu of meads, cocktails, and food pairings was very well put together and made it feel like an adventure for your palate. I won't list any favorites because everything I had was a favorite. This review is for the first annual mead festival that happened on 8/4 2018. Set up next to Schramms Meadery. Ticket price included tote bag, T shirt, 5 samples of mead, 4 food samples and some extras. Large tent covered sample area, food tables, bandstand and seating. Very hot day. Would recommend some fans for next event. Overall this was a very good event. The number of available mead samples was pretty large but you could only try 5. The samples we chose were all VERY tasty. I am a fan of Schramms because they ferment a more traditional style of mead. More honey flavor and not overpowered by additional flavors. The food that was available was also pretty tasty. You were allowed one sample from each vendor. The nicest part about this event was the timed entrance aspect. They had two seatings at 3 hours each. This meant no big crowds pushing and shoving to get limited samples of food and mead. Well thought out. They also had other vendors in a seperate area selling books, honey, cookies and other stuff. In order to pick up the tote bag and goodies you had to leave the event, no re-entry, and go into the store. This was a big snafu. Only a few people in store at a time and a long line waiting outside. Once inside you wait some more until you get to back of store where they ask for ID and then start handing out bags AND bottles of mead if they were pre ordered. Quite a bottleneck and very crowded. Not sure if this was a security issue but there was plenty of space outside to do this. I think this event is a one off for me but I will certainly be back to the store to try some other samples. read more

I have a serious Schramm's mead issue! Recently during Ferndale DIY Festival I came in here for some flights. I had been buying and enjoying Schramm's for about 6 months at this time but had yet to visit the tasting room. They weren't too busy which made finding a spot on the patio easy. Service was great and we sampled two flights, which is six meads in total. This past week was their 5 year anniversary party and cellar sale. During the cellar sale they had a fairly full house with people enjoying meads and then purchasing bottles. The staff was super helpful as they always were regardless of your expertises. The table next to me started with a couple who was with Schramm's from the beginning, and they invited two others looking for a place to sit to share their table. Turns out that couple had never had Schramm's. Even with the pressure of the room the server expertly explained the highlights of Schramm's styles, flavors, and answered all questions. It was a well run operation with bottle packing and execution handled by some additional staff not working the floor. The product is 5 stars, and the amount of money I've spent borders on insanity. It's great to know you can come sample and enjoy the product in a well organized establishment. There are a lot of establishments out there who produce and distribute a great product but when it comes to their Tasting Room or 'Brew Pub' storefront they really fall short; not so at Schramm's. Due to the popularity of sweeter meads Schramm's does not really do dry styles. At the time of this review however Marionberry is quite a bit dry in respect to their other offerings if that is what you seek. read more

We came to Schramm's on their fifth anniversary. Their selection of meads is extensive and every single choice is absolutely delicious. However, expect to pay for it - $16 for a five-ounce pour. The biggest issue we had was with service. The gal who was working at the bar did not do a good job tending to us. We were seated at the table watching and listening as she conversed with a couple people who were sitting at the bar. Because it seemed as though she didn't want to help us, I took our marked order slips to the bar. She didn't acknowledge receipt. Then, a girl who was working in the back came to our table and was very helpful. She answered our questions and gave recommendations and nudged the girl at the bar to serve us. We finally got our glasses of mead and some samples of honey, which was nice. We enjoyed them and asked for the tab. It took a solid 15 minutes to cash out, despite how empty the place was. Impressed with the mead, but not with the service. B. Nektar is more affordable and the service is better there. Their mead menu isn't as extensive, but the environment and entertainment are excellent. read more

We when there for my birthday. Trying to find a place that wasn't too busy. I really like the decor and the vibe in the place. Very intimate! We sat at the bar having no clue what this type of mead really was at that time and the sommelier helped us out a lot. He explained the type of mead they had was wine made from honey. I knew that, but it was very different to other mead I had. Meads I had before weren't so sweet and wine like! He helped me pair the meads with different snacks in order to really enjoy the mead. Speaking of snacks. The desserts there are really really good! Chocolate cake gets a I liked the Statement (cherry) mead the most. It was very sweet, but didn't confuse my tastebuds while drinking it. The meads that were made with spices confused my taste buds and were a little over powering. Not a huge fan of the ginger. Oh, I love the other meadery in Ferndale, but gotta say that this didn't attract a certain type of person that typically goes to the others. The location is great - lots of parking nearby and the store itself is so clean and well lit. They have two nice spacious bathrooms in the back. One men and one for women. Great Meads. They tend to lean more towards the dessert wine/port style mead then the hard cider meads, so be prepared for that. We tasted 12 different meads and they were all amazing, my favorite was the statement which is made with balaton cherries, and the Madeline which is made from boysenberry, both were out of this world amazing. The price is a little bit high but they are also very high in alcohol content so be aware if you plan on drinking a lot. The place is small but very nice, sat at the bar and service was prompt and friendly. Through chance, I found myself shuffling in here by way of an out-of-town referral from the family beer-snob to pick up a couple of bottles of this mysterious fermentation called mead for him. Having experienced mead for this first time while doing this, I have only one question; sweet baby Jesus, where has this place been all my life?!? Never have I had such a tasty beverage as the tasty beverage that I can't wait to have again each time I come here! I'm a simple creature, but I know what I like. And I have successfully converted any and all of those who I'm rarely willing to spare a drop of this liquid heaven with, into learning more about Schramms' themselves. Could I be wrong? The mead here is very good. It is on the higher end compared to B. Nektar or something like that. The inside is small with a few comfy seats and then more at the bar. I've been seeing more people from outside of Michigan getting Schramm's so I'm glad they're expanding. The waitstaff seemed like they were part owners too. Super knowledgeable and excited about mead. If you are coming here, you probably already understand the man behind the mead. Mr. Schramm is frequently here working his magic and he is more than happy to engage in conversation about his latest meads, or just to talk in general. I first had their "official" mead at Winezilla a few weeks prior to the official opening of the tasting room, and I got to talk to Ken there, get a few bottles of Ginger Mead and a copy of his book. I live in California, so I only have access when I'm in Michigan. I was just in Michigan again this last week, so I finally had a chance to stop in and check out the new place. Well, it's fabulous. It's small inside, so I imagine it's crowded. However they had a premier flight that even gave a pour of their famous Heart of Darkness. It was fantastic, as were the other meads I tried that evening. I did not get to try any of their pairing plates or desserts, but I will next time. Ken and family are all doing great stuff here. I happily brought back at least one bottle of everything you produce to SoCal with me (except Raspberry and The Statement Reserve, although I did get to try SR at a tasting... excellent!) and I look forward to my next trip out that way! read more

So.....Schramm's. If you've never had mead, this is the place to start. It will ruin you for all other mead. Your expectations will become very high. Every mead that I've ever had is top notch. There is a reason they are rated as one of the top meaderies in the US. It's a very small place that is usually pretty quiet unless there is a release. Once in awhile, they have brunch/dinner events, which I have yet to attend. You will not be disappointed in their mead. It's smooth, full of amazing flavor, and delicious. It's a bit more expensive than most, but it's worth every penny. Staff is always incredibly nice and happy to assist with recommendations. read more

Ken Schramm long ago set the standard for mead making- literally writing the book. Finally, he is selling to the general public. The meads are lovingly handcrafted works of art. They are fruit (or Ginger) intensive, made from the finest fruits and honey to be had. Yes, they are priced higher than other local meads. But these meads are much more akin to fine wine than to craft beer. The only other commercial meads I have had that approach this level are from Moonlight Meadery, in New Hampshire. I had no idea what mead was until a foodie friend visiting from out of town suggested we check this place out. If you are a fan of sweet alcoholic beverages like myself, look no further than this meadery for your alcohol needs. I suspect the term 'nectar of the gods' grew out of meads: honey-based wines that are flavored in various fruit and spice flavors here. We shared a flights of 4 or 5 meads...and then swapped flights with our friends. All of them were really good! Many are available for purchase by the bottle on site. I hate to give only three stars for something trivial like decor... But really? I was expecting to find myself in a Viking style bar resembling the inside of a castle. Not something that resembles the inside of the coffee beanery. Actually the coffee beanery may have more ambient lighting. We had a night planned around mead flights and sampling with friends which ended up lasting no more than 20 minutes. Don't expect a buzz from the flight. Positives are that the mead was pleasant- the heart of darkness is amazing. The service is good. But if your looking for an experience. This place is an absolute treasure and you must visit. Great place to stop for a drink with your date before or after your evening. They have a nice bar for solo diners and indoor and outdoor seating. The wait staff are all very knowledgeable about mead and are passionate about what they serve. They check each glass for quality before they pour. They have fantastic small plates. They also have coffee!! I enjoyed the pretzel pulled pork which was delicious and smoky. It isn't uncommon for you to interact with the owners. Ken is a mead genius and his wife is wicked hospitable and very charming. My wife and I visited Schramm's Meadery in November and were looking forward to a unique experience as the only meads we have had were the ones that I have made or several mediocre meads from the local beer and wine shop. Needless to say, Ken Schramm is THE authority on meads and his meads are sublime. My wife and I do not have adequate words in our vocabulary to describe just how good these meads are. The Heart of Darkness stands out among the rest of the tasty brews. We sampled both "flights" with an accompanying cheese plate and they were a perfect match. We could not pick a favorite, although each mead is unique and an experience in itself. Now I'm motivated more than ever to make another mead, although it won't come close to Ken's, he's simply a craftsman of the highest order, and quite possibly a genius in our midst... read more

I'm in love with this place, and we only live a mile away or so. The atmosphere is really chill even though it's in downtown Ferndale, and they have patio seating that's really comfortable. The Black Agnes is really, really lovely, and they have some Avalon products on site. I think they also may have some things from Pinwheel down the street. If you've never had mead before, do the flight (really, if you've never been there before, do the flight). I'm not the hugest fan of the nutmeg and ginger mead straight, though I could see how they'd be great in a cocktail - the flavors are really strong and spicy. Try it though, and decide for yourself. Can't speak highly enough of this place! I'd 100% recommend to everyone to try...especially the Black Agnes!!! They change what's on tap often, so it's always worth stopping in to see what you may like to buy at their bottle releases. This is THE BEST mead I have ever tasted and I've tasted quite a few different ones from different meaderies. Some bottles (very few) are available in select shops, but the best ones are only sold from bottle releases right at this location! I'd say, on average, 9/10 meads at this location I have given between 4.5-5 stars/5 stars on the Untapped App! It's truly amazing how they do it! Great quality, great taste. read more

Prior to coming to Schramm's this past weekend I had sadly never tasted mead! So this review is coming from a person who is comparing the mead here to absolutley nothing else. That said I love the meads I tasted, and will be back to enjoy more in the future! I tried the red mead flight. The flavors were so full bodied and fruity, you can taste the honey but not in an overly sweet way. Lets just say a new mead fan was born. Let me just say that Debbie is so sweet and so knowledgable about their products. She can tell you all about their process, where they source their ingredients, and more. We went in for a tasting and their meads are a few of the best I've tasted. I'm no wine expert or mead expert, but the word full bodied comes to mind when I taste their mead. From the moment it hits your tongue to even after you've put your cup down. It was a great taste and a lovely lovely after taste that keeps me smacking my mouth. Keep in mind meads are usually sweet in nature and similar to a dessert wine. So if that is what you like, this place is right up your alley. They also have a small selection of food to eat while enjoying your mead. My husband was in love with their pretzel pulled pork slider. The texture of the pretzel bun was perfect and the sauce that came with it was just a great balance of flavor. They also have board game night here every first Wednesday of the month so if you wanted an excuse to come here (not that you really need one) come then. read more

We are lucky to have a master mead maker in Michigan. We ordered both flight offerings which allowed us to try everything available. Mead is an acquired taste, so if you're not sure go for the flight first to try all the different varieties. I really enjoyed the blackberry and The Heart of Darkness. its alright. the space is very loud, like really loud. they could use some sound dampeners and something soft on the walls. the mead, unfortunately, wasn't as good as bnektar. its also double the price. the price was what i found to be the most unsettling. i found the ginger mead very delicious and the blackberry mead to taste like robitussin. overall, i think i will return and i may increase my rating. they had some meat and cheese plates that seemed fun. it was their first weekend, so a solid three really isn't that bad. 4.5 rounded up to a 5. Tonight was my first night there and I will definitely be back (and not just because my writers' group has decided to meet there again.) While far from an expert, I've had good mead--I have friends and extended family who home brew so I know it's not supposed to taste like that stuff you get in the grocery store. Schramm's definitely does not disappoint. I had two different meads and both were excellent. The food was perhaps a bit on the expensive the, but it was *good* cheese and absolutely awesome dessert. Bottom line: worth it. (I'm one of those people who doesn't mind paying a little more for good food as long as it's *really* good food.) I didn't actually get a look at the menu, but it seems to be mostly nibbles and appetizer, which served as the perfect accompaniment for the mead. (I was a little disappointed to learn they don't serve coffee, although I wasn't the one who asked. They offer hot chocolate instead, so not a horrible trade.) I didn't find the place to be loud at all (well, until we got there...) and seriously, while I don't usually comment on other people's comments, who expects a "Viking castle" in downtown Ferndale? The décor is inviting and warm--just like the staff. The place is small, so I suppose if it's full, it could get loud, but I've been in *much* noisier bars/restaurants. Ferndale parking is atrocious, especially this time of year (Christmas), which of course is no fault of any of the downtown merchants, just something to be aware of. I've been meaning to get here since I first saw posts for this place on Yelp and now that I have I can say it's worthy of five stars easily. A little west of Planavon and next to the Bangkok Café, Schramm's is unassuming and reminded me of a winery tasting room. The bar area is comfortable and open and they have a few other spots (couches and such) adjacent to 9 mile to sit and sip. The shoppe was clean and crisp looking with a spotless kitchen, set up to make mead of course. Their product was all wonderful from those I tried having had their flight of three (Blackberry sec, Ginger and Cherry?) and then their three berry flight. I really enjoyed each of them. They have a food menu that I'll try at some point but the five stars goes to the ladies running the show. Allison, Debbie and Kelsey all of which were fantastically friendly and engaging. The experience was a fun one and left me looking forward to coming back both to enjoy another glass of their nectar, to play some trivia on Trivia Thursdays and to pick up some mead to take home and cook with.
