Came early evening on a Friday. Party of 3 seated right away. We had the sweetest waitress with a deep southern accent; she was attentive & the best! The main part of the restaurant by the bar has dim lighting and tight seating but not uncomfortable. We started off with the crab dip; very good. I love when the chips are seasoned. We also had the crab flaming oysters (not the actual name). They set the plate on fire. My cousin and friend don't particularly like raw oysters, but still loved them! It's not cooked all the way through, but the crab on top with the Asiago cheese was a great pair. The lobster seafood paella was delicious! All the seafood was cooked to perfection. It has been years since I've been to Tom's oyster bar. The atmosphere of course can't be beat. A quaint little restaurant enough for an intimate celebration or just a plain evening out. Unfortunately I think there was nothing really outstanding about the meal. We went for lobsterfest, and we were all pretty excited to have some phenomenal dishes considering that this is a seafood based restaurant. We had four different experiences and they're pretty much the food was just okay, wish any other time would be understandable but, this being a special event I would hope that things would be a little bit more outstanding. Our server was very nice, but definitely not the most attentive for a higher-end restaurant. The lobster fries are not seasoned, the sauce is on the side by request but the flavor is not there, it was dropped in oil no seasoning. This carries over to the perch which was also unseasoned. First off, the beers and the service were great. The bartender was friendly and responsive. We wandered in thinking this was part of Ale Mary next door and didn't realize it wasn't until we'd already ordered a drink. We just opted to share something and got the All American Breakfast Skillet. I realize that ordering breakfast/brunch at an oyster bar is a unique decision but it was only 11am. The eggs and salad were fine, but the dish itself was supposed to be meatless and about halfway through the potatoes, we ended up with bacon bits in each bite. My wife ordered some shrimp dish and it was pretty skimpy. She then ordered a side salad to help fulfill her hunger and it took a long time to come out. It has been many years since I have been to Tom's oyster bar, and unfortunately, it was not how I remembered it. We went there for the oysters - which was very disappointing. Every oyster had big pieces of shell from not being shucked correctly and the oyster was still attached to the shell. The mignonette was little boba tea balls, which did nothing for the flavor. I like the atmosphere and the ahi tuna was good, but for a place that is supposed to be known for oysters, they should probably learn how to shuck them properly. Don't waste your money on oysters unless you like a mouth full of shells. read more

Let's start with the good. Our sushi roll with blue crab was delicious. We ordered three lobster rolls between two of us. They were good but not great. They had the appropriate bun with a nice buttery flavor. The french fries were pretty good. The not so good... My wife's tropical drink served in a fish-shaped glass I cannot recall the name but the glass was cute tasted watered down. Couldn't taste Malibu couldn't taste RumChata. It was called a bumbu painkiller. Yep it tasted watered down total disappointment. The service was fair.. it could have been better. We were at the south bar and the bartender spent more time on prep work then checking up on her bar patrons of which they were between three and six the entire time we were there including us. I had heard about Tom's oyster bar for years so this definitely worth a try as we are out of towners. But there are so many other places in Royal oak. It may be quite a while before rotation brings us back here again... if ever. It wasn't horrible, it's just there are other choices that do better. read more

This is one of my favorites in Royal Oak. The food is always great, the cocktail menu rotates seasonally and always has fun options, and the service is great! One of my favorite dishes is the mussels, one of their appetizers. They are served in a saffron cream sauce with corn, tomatoes and jalepenos. The combination of flavors is incredible. For entrees, my favorite is the pasta aurora, a creamy spinach, tomato pasta with a mix of seafood. So good. The vibe is great inside. Hard to believe but I think this was my first visit to Tom's Oyster Bar. It was tough to come up with an overall star rating for this review because it was a mixed bag. I would probably give it a 2.5 if I could but decided to round up to 3. My wife and I met friends here for dinner and enjoyed our table outside on a beautiful evening. Our server was very friendly and attentive. After ordering drinks (more on this to follow) we ordered our meals. My wife only had the appetizer crab cake as her meal. I ordered a bowl of clam chowder and a lobster roll. My friends had the crab cake dinner and perch dinner. When there was no sign of my soup I told the waitress when she walked by that I would like my soup before my entree. (Side note. Doesn't this go without saying because this has happened to me a few times lately). She said sure, let me get that for you. A couple minutes later a server arrives with our entrees. I told the server that my soup never arrived. A couple minutes later my soup arrives. Bad start. The clam chowder I must say was excellent. Our server told me she would take the soup off the bill which she did. My wife thought the crab cake was good...not the best she has had but good. I thought my lobster roll was pretty average. Fries that came with as a no upcharge add were great. Our friends both enjoyed their meals The bill arrives and upon review I am shocked by the price of my Tito's on the rocks...a new record for the most I have ever been charged in Michigan for a Tito's on the rocks and that includes places like Capital Grill and highest end restaurants in the city and Tom's is a rather pedestrian neighborhood seafood joint certainly not a "Michelin Star" restaurant or anywhere close to that to warrant a drink price like that. The Tito's was $12 and $4.80 upcharge for on the rocks. It's not at all unusual to see an upcharge for rocks but I have never seen a $4.80 upcharge. I have never seen $16.80 for a Titos on the rocks in Michigan. Only place I have paid that is in New York City. It wasn't even a huge pour either. Tom's manager needs to check the market and get his drink prices in line. I don't care about the $5ish "overcharge" on the drink....its the principle. And with the food being nothing to rave about, that obscene drink price is enough for me to not return to Tom's. read more

Tom's is having lobster month in February so my sisters and I decided to go for Sunday brunch. I made a reservation online and we were seated as soon as we arrived. The tables are pretty small and tight together but we made it work. We started with oysters rockerfeller and fried oysters. Both were delicious and full of flavor. For drinks we ordered a passion fruit margarita, and my sisters ordered a crème brule martini and I don't know the name of my friend's drink. We all enjoyed them. For entrees we got the lobster shrimp & grits, lobster & waffle tower and the lobster seafood paella. All of our plates were scraped clean. Tom's is one of the few restaurants we visit more than a few times a year. The seafood is tops, service is always friendly, and in spite of Royal Oak's parking situation (use the garages for a free two hours) we brave the walk over to the place. Had the lake perch and partner had the tuna tartare along with some of the best calamari around. We also had their famous (on a recent visit) Spanish Coffee which is available in decaf. Tom's Oyster bar has been on my to-try list for years, and I finally made it there yesterday! We had a reservation at 6:30 (we made the reservation a few hours beforehand) and we were able to be seated right away. We ate on the patio, which is a small area between the sidewalk and the street, which is a bit loud, but great for people watching and enjoying the weather. The menu is only front and back, but they have a lot packed on there! We asked our waitress for some recommendations, and everything she mentioned sounded amazing. For my meal, I ended up starting with oysters. I chose the blue point, chesapeake, and the malpeque--all were very good! And for my main, I had the lobster roll which was fresh and flavorful. I had a great time here! Our waitress was super friendly and knowledgeable, the food was tasty, the prices were fair, and the atmosphere was nice and welcoming. The good, the bad, and the ugly... We went for RO Restaurant week, but after looking at the regular menu prices, we decided not to get it. We did get a few items off of the restaurant week menu. The fish for the fish and chips was excellent. The fries would have been excellent if they were warm. The lobster bisque was the worst I've ever had, and the shrimp scampi special was even worse than that. The sauce was not edible. We tried ordering 3 different wines that they were out of. The cocktail I had was delicious, but the drinks like the food are overpriced. Stopped in on a Tuesday for a quick lunch and everything was absolutely great! The surf abs turf was delicious I didn't even have a chance to take a picture. Our bartender Murph was awesome. His attention to detail was top tier. Murph felt like a friend I hadn't seen in long time. Great conversation and made us feel welcome. While I normally love what I get, scallops since I was there for lunch, I got a cup of lobster bisque and tried their sushi by ordering the volcano roll calmed down. While the lobster bisque was good, the sushi was a big mistake. Instead of the fried shrimp rolled in it, but covering it. I didn't even eat the half I took home. Others with me enjoyed theirs, I learned my lesson. The service was even a little slow because the server had too many tables and there were empty tables mid day lunch. Tom's, once a staple in our date night "rounds", has gone so severely downhill that we won't be back. From SLOOOOW service on a Monday evening to sub par food and drinks that are grossly overpriced, this Royal Oak spot has gone from inspired to tired. We started our evening at 7:30 and it's nearly 9:00... we have just received our entrees. My husband's salmon is dry and over cooked while his accompanying vegetables are raw. My crab cake is mediocre at best and if it wasn't $32 I would be leaving it here. For the price I'm hoping the dog will lower himself for a snack. The wait staff is haughty and looks annoyed to have to bother with us and we're just so disappointed. There are so many establishments that are worth your time in Royal Oak, but Tom's is definitely one to avoid at all costs. read more

The second batch was piping hot & I enjoyed it. There was a lemony taste which was a bit overpowering & some of the clams were a bit chewy but overall it was still a good taste. Next time I will try the lobster bisque. For my entree I ordered the Lobster Carbonara without bacon & the crab cake appetizer! That meal was a solid 10/10!
