I had seen this restaurant featured on the morning news while they were profiling different restaurants that were at the Royal Oak Arts Beats and Eats and the food just looked so good. I knew I had to eat there that day. My friend got the cod fish and chips which came with a unique style of tartar sauce and he said the french fries were delicious better than any he ever had before and he loved the fish. Went to Tom's Oyster Bar around 5pm. Got a table for 1 and was sat immediately. The restaurant was clean and my waitress was extremely quick. They had options of the bar or a table, and indoor or outdoor seating. I went in knowing what I wanted outside of the mocktail I ordered. Everything was delicious and came out within a normal timeframe. Overall would enjoyed and would go back. I ordered the Oyster Rockefeller, Peach Mocktail, and Lobster Roll Flight. I ordered the peach Bellini soft serve. You can add flavors for an extra $2 but I opted to just have it without flavor, which I was glad because I saw someone else drink and it looked like a puddle of strawberry syrup at the bottom of their drink . It was the perfect size and amount and so delicious, sweet with a hint of peach but not overly sweet...didn't taste any alcohol though. For my meal I had the lemon butter lobster roll. This was very disappointing, the lobster was minimal and chopped up very fine. There was NO lemon flavor and barely any butter, driest lobster roll I've ever had. Would not order again or have the desire to try any of the other varieties they offered. Also, there was a ton of soggy lettuce at the bottom...I didn't think lobster rolls came with it but it definitely could have been left off. Overall the roll was bready , dry and no flavor. Came early evening on a Friday. Party of 3 seated right away. We had the sweetest waitress with a deep southern accent; she was attentive & the best! The main part of the restaurant by the bar has dim lighting and tight seating but not uncomfortable. We started off with the crab dip; very good. I love when the chips are seasoned. We also had the crab flaming oysters (not the actual name). They set the plate on fire. My cousin and friend don't particularly like raw oysters, but still loved them! It's not cooked all the way through, but the crab on top with the Asiago cheese was a great pair. The lobster seafood paella was delicious! All the seafood was cooked to perfection. It has been years since I've been to Tom's oyster bar. The atmosphere of course can't be beat. A quaint little restaurant enough for an intimate celebration or just a plain evening out. Unfortunately I think there was nothing really outstanding about the meal. We went for lobsterfest, and we were all pretty excited to have some phenomenal dishes considering that this is a seafood based restaurant. We had four different experiences and they're pretty much the food was just okay, wish any other time would be understandable but, this being a special event I would hope that things would be a little bit more outstanding. Our server was very nice, but definitely not the most attentive for a higher-end restaurant. We wandered in thinking this was part of Ale Mary next door and didn't realize it wasn't until we'd already ordered a drink. We just opted to share something and got the All American Breakfast Skillet. I realize that ordering breakfast/brunch at an oyster bar is a unique decision but it was only 11am. The eggs and salad were fine, but the dish itself was supposed to be meatless and about halfway through the potatoes, we ended up with bacon bits in each bite. Let's start with the good. Our sushi roll with blue crab was delicious. We ordered three lobster rolls between two of us. They were good but not great. They had the appropriate bun with a nice buttery flavor. The french fries were pretty good. The not so good... My wife's tropical drink served in a fish-shaped glass I cannot recall the name but the glass was cute tasted watered down. Couldn't taste Malibu couldn't taste RumChata. It was called a bumbu painkiller. Yep it tasted watered down total disappointment. The service was fair.. it could have been better. We were at the south bar and the bartender spent more time on prep work then checking up on her bar patrons of which they were between three and six the entire time we were there including us. I had heard about Tom's oyster bar for years so this definitely worth a try as we are out of towners. But there are so many other places in Royal oak. We came to Tom's Oyster Bar to celebrate my son's birthday. Our servers were friendly and we appreciated the complimentary birthday dessert as a thoughtful gesture. The calamari was good, and the paella was fine, although I felt $49 was far too expensive for such a small bowl. The biggest disappointment was the lobster roll. It was packed with shredded lettuce, while the actual lobster amounted to maybe a tablespoon and a half of tiny pieces. At $29, it was nowhere near worth the price. For dessert, they brought my son a small slice of rainbow-layer cheesecake for his birthday. While the gesture was appreciated, the cheesecake itself was extremely dry and unfortunately not enjoyable. Overall, the service was good, but the value for the money just wasn't there. Between the overpriced paella and the very disappointing lobster roll, I don't think we'd return. read more

This is one of my favorites in Royal Oak. The food is always great, the cocktail menu rotates seasonally and always has fun options, and the service is great! One of my favorite dishes is the mussels, one of their appetizers. They are served in a saffron cream sauce with corn, tomatoes and jalepenos. The combination of flavors is incredible. For entrees, my favorite is the pasta aurora, a creamy spinach, tomato pasta with a mix of seafood. So good. The vibe is great inside. I wanted something special for my birthday. I love oysters and I only get them on my birthday so I went to Tom's Oyster Bar and was having the time of my life. Annabelle was the bartender as well as server. She was so pleasant and polite and explained the type of oysters. I asked for a special drink "a French martini". She was not familiar with this but I told her the ingredients and she made me a couple of them which were fabulous. The West Coast oysters that I had with plain lemon were delicious. I also ordered crab cakes which came with a corn relish and mashed potatoes. They were the best crab cakes. I highly recommend going to this restaurant because number one it opens early at 11 AM and the food was great and the people also. I went there a second time because so many restaurants in Royal Oak don't open early they open at 3 o'clock 5 o'clock other times was an inconvenience to have no early openings until those times. read more

Horrible!!! We were celebrating my boyfriend's birthday and I ordered their "famous" Fish & Chips and the cod was undercooked. Our waiter was not very friendly. This was my first and last time here! Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time and money. And to add insult to injury the waiter had the audacity to put that undercooked Cod on our bill that I didn't eat. I had to request for the manager and she said sometimes the Cod can have a little discoloration, ummmm lady I know difference between undercooked and discoloration. Hard to believe but I think this was my first visit to Tom's Oyster Bar. It was tough to come up with an overall star rating for this review because it was a mixed bag. I would probably give it a 2.5 if I could but decided to round up to 3. My wife and I met friends here for dinner and enjoyed our table outside on a beautiful evening. Our server was very friendly and attentive. After ordering drinks (more on this to follow) we ordered our meals. My wife only had the appetizer crab cake as her meal. I ordered a bowl of clam chowder and a lobster roll. My friends had the crab cake dinner and perch dinner. When there was no sign of my soup I told the waitress when she walked by that I would like my soup before my entree. (Side note. Doesn't this go without saying because this has happened to me a few times lately). She said sure, let me get that for you. A couple minutes later a server arrives with our entrees. I told the server that my soup never arrived. A couple minutes later my soup arrives. Bad start. The clam chowder I must say was excellent. Our server told me she would take the soup off the bill which she did. My wife thought the crab cake was good...not the best she has had but good. I thought my lobster roll was pretty average. Fries that came with as a no upcharge add were great. Our friends both enjoyed their meals The bill arrives and upon review I am shocked by the price of my Tito's on the rocks...a new record for the most I have ever been charged in Michigan for a Tito's on the rocks and that includes places like Capital Grill and highest end restaurants in the city and Tom's is a rather pedestrian neighborhood seafood joint certainly not a "Michelin Star" restaurant or anywhere close to that to warrant a drink price like that. The Tito's was $12 and $4.80 upcharge for on the rocks. It's not at all unusual to see an upcharge for rocks but I have never seen a $4.80 upcharge. I have never seen $16.80 for a Titos on the rocks in Michigan. Only place I have paid that is in New York City. It wasn't even a huge pour either. Tom's manager needs to check the market and get his drink prices in line. I don't care about the $5ish "overcharge" on the drink....its the principle. And with the food being nothing to rave about, that obscene drink price is enough for me to not return to Tom's. read more

We started with the calamari and it was great. My husband had the lobster roll variety, and I had the Mac and cheese add lobster, we ate until we couldn't. The mocktails were great. The tables are pretty small and tight together but we made it work. We started with oysters rockerfeller and fried oysters. Both were delicious and full of flavor. For drinks we ordered a passion fruit margarita, and my sisters ordered a crème brule martini and I don't know the name of my friend's drink. We all enjoyed them. Tom's Oyster bar has been on my to-try list for years, and I finally made it there yesterday! We had a reservation at 6:30 (we made the reservation a few hours beforehand) and we were able to be seated right away. We ate on the patio, which is a small area between the sidewalk and the street, which is a bit loud, but great for people watching and enjoying the weather. The menu is only front and back, but they have a lot packed on there! We asked our waitress for some recommendations, and everything she mentioned sounded amazing. For my meal, I ended up starting with oysters. I chose the blue point, chesapeake, and the malpeque--all were very good! And for my main, I had the lobster roll which was fresh and flavorful. I had a great time here! Our waitress was super friendly and knowledgeable, the food was tasty, the prices were fair, and the atmosphere was nice and welcoming.
