Took Mom to Nicks for Mothers Day. We had reservations and we were seated immediately. We sat in the sunroom which was real nice until the AC came on and was blasting right on us. Now to the food ....it was great! Mom had crab cakes that she thoroughly enjoyed. I had Salmon Oscar on a bed of asparagus with hollandaise sauce it was absolutely delicious. Historically, Nick's. Airport inn has been a real tradition for many individuals even at Easter time. So in my many years that I lived in Hagerstown, Maryland as we owned a home in the north end of Hagerstown, Maryland , I would enjoy going there with my wife and young sons. We have lived away from Hagerstown for a long time now. We have very fond memories of Hagerstown as we had our home there that we purchased after I finished my tour as a U. S.Marine. Corps officer during the Vietnam war . My dearest wife Vicki Ishler Matthews graduated from North Hagerstown, high school and also from Hagerstown, junior college many years ago. Location: just off of I 81 north of Hagerstown and south of the Pennsylvania line. Famously located on the end of the runway of Hagerstown airport - pilots have been known to fly in to eat here! Operating in the same location since World War II. Service: in my experience over 30 years eating here the service has always been professional and great. We've eaten there twice recently for romantic getaways, and our experience was great. Shout out to Stephanie our server both times and a wonderful and fun professional. She really made us feel welcome. The owner and managers are always present also and often visit each table. Facilities: it's a big place - 10 dining rooms of various sizes, and a popular piano bar/atrium that the locals call "the lounge". Group and office lunches are very popular here. My wife and I enjoy going on weekends to the lounge for great seafood to the accompaniment of American standards on the piano. Noise levels are lower in the main dining rooms, but we love the buzz and atmosphere of the lounge. White table cloths, crystal, and martini glasses, - It's all very old-school in a very nice relaxing way. Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin would've loved dining here - and I mean that as a compliment! Value: recently, our entrées were in the $30-$40 range, with great appetizers around $12-$15. Drinks were only nine dollars or so. Our bill for two with two drinks each was about $130, so not a cheap night out, but much less than I would expect to pay for anything comparable in any metro area! Nick's steaks and especially seafood are great. Nick's crabcakes are deservedly famous. Another reviewer said they had too much filler - where was he eating? Nick's lump crab meat cakes have almost no filler at all. See photos attached below and on their website. What you see is what you get! I've had a hard time finding equally good crabcakes even on Maryland's Eastern shore. People don't typically think you should come to Hagerstown to eat crabcakes, - but they should! Pro tips: dinner starts early and the busiest times seem to be around six 630 for dinner. The kitchen closes at eight! So come for cocktails and stay for an early excellent dinner. Dress is generally classy/casual. No coats or ties, but nice shirts, dresses and slacks. On a recent summer visit, everyone in the lounge looked like they had come from the yacht club! My husband and I eat at Nick's 2 times per week. The staff is accommodating to my dietary needs and goes above and beyond to please us. Their food is very good and fresh. I have had a dish or two that were not cooked to my preference and they immediately addressed it and replaced it with the correct doneness. Everyone is polite and eager to please, especially the bartender! Please do not let a couple of disgruntled patrons keep you from enjoying such a lovely restaurant. This review is in response to Opa and Cupcake. My husband and I were celebrating our 31st anniversary at Nick's Airport Inn and we witnessed a horrible scene created by Opa and Cupcakes table. Nothing the staff did would make this group happy. I witnessed the server try to accommodate them all night long and they continuously complained. As we were leaving, we witnessed a man pointing his finger at the manager and cursing at him creating an even uglier scene for the rest of the dining room. Thanks for ruining my anniversary dinner but on a side note, our service EXCELLENT or food was beyond delicious and prepared exactly the way we ordered. Well, I think my visit today may be my last. My family has been coming to Nick's since before I can recall and it's had its ups and downs but I think it remains on the downside now. Nicks was once the finest experience in Hagerstown, for steak and seafood as well as a white tablecloth experience. Great for special occasions, anniversaries, family gatherings, prom night, or just a nice night out for good food. We looked forward to it and many special nights were celebrated at this restaurant. Fast forward to tonight and Nick's is a ghost of what it was formerly. The menu is mainly the same, with key dishes like crabcakes, steak and some greek influenced options. One of the best things I've enjoyed over the years was the absolutely amazing crab imperial. Tonight, I had a seafood medley that included the imperial, but enough is enough. The good: The place is clean, and though dated in its decor, still feels nice. The service was ok, but not what I expect for a nicer place. The menu options are plentiful and they still have specials to select from. I had a wedge salad that was quite good. The bad: My scallops were over cooked to the point where I literally couldn't chew them. I'm not picky, I just couldn't get them to not be a giant ball of rubber...like a roll of balloons dipped in butter. When I mentioned it to the waitress, she said "oh, well no more of those, huh?". I recommended that she inform the chef, as scallops (though not difficult to prepare) are easily overcooked. That crab imperial I was so looking forward to? Poor quality/size crab meat and the sauce was dismal. It had a pinkish hue to it and really missed the mark for not only the bar set here, but by the bar of many other local restaurants My wife and son both ordered the special, which was a shrimp Alfredo pasta w peas and Tasso ham. Both found it to lack flavor, and it had little sauce, with what was included being very thin. (Did the chef add water to make more????) With other places so close by that are fantastic, it made me not only ask why I spent $150 here, but also why I even bother coming here at all. The answer: I won't, anymore. To the owner: I'd never expect feedback regarding food to be received so poorly and met with so little empathy. The quality and recipes have absolutely changed over the years and you're failing to compete with better restaurants around the area. I'm now not surprised that there were only 6 cars in the lot tonight. For the perspective customer: skip it. Spend 10-15 mins and drive to better places, there are many. Seafood here is done...over done, just like my loyalty to a nostalgic establishment. read more

Very disappointing lunch yesterday. Had a group of family in to celebrate some birthdays and it was very embarrassing on the amount of food that was served for the price we were paying . Chicken breast entree included a salad, a side and a piece of chicken that was about 5" X 4" and not more than a 1/2" thick. When it came it looked so bad sitting on a big plate all by itself.. Others ordered a crab cake that was the size of a golf ball, and crab imperial in a dish that measured 4" X 4" for $24. I expect to pay extra to come here due to the reputation of the place, but should think you would not leave hungry.. I guess stick to the sandwiches or specials where at least there is bread to fill you up and they give LOTS of fries to do the same thing. We started with the oysters Rockefeller, clams casino & fried Buffalo oysters...can't tell you which I enjoyed more! Should be NO stars. We gave this place a 2nd chance and that was a mistake. Place is awful, manager is mean & aggressive. The bartender threathen my husband, saying, "If he was not on the clock, he would take my husband outside!" What employees acts that way and threathens a customer???We were a family trying to have a wonderful birthday dinner and all the food was awful. Steaks were rare, mistakes with orders, berated an 86 year old guest(s)of ours. His order was verbally placed by a family member and waitress argued she put in what he 'pointed' too. They brought out the totally wrong meal and said they were OUT of what he wanted. So, she knew what he wanted and up charged him for this meal and did not ask him. So the meal he wanted was $35 and was charged $55! This disgusting place should give up. There is no way a chef is cooking these meals. I have traveled all over and this was a disgrace. They do NOT care about the customers satisfaction and get posturing and aggressive behavior when approached with an issue(s) One of our guess cried at the table due to how the manager spoke to her and his agressive tone. The manager was arguing with her that her steak was not salty and both HIM and the chef TASTED her steak. Why? Why would they taste a steak that a customer was eating. The owners of this establishment need to know what is going on with this place. We asked multiple times for the owners name and phone number and it was not given to us. THANK goodness for a wonderful Italian restaurant down the street that saved our night! Wonderful owner of the Italian restaurant(Cafe Roma), wonderful food, and amazing employees. We made a reservation for my birthday. I ordered my food with light salt. My fillet and food were extremely salty and cold. I told the server and the manager came out and said your food is not salty, I tasted it. Omg gross. He was so rude to me I cried at the table. My sister and brother in law's steaks were raw, they sent it back and they were returned outside was burnt but inside still raw. They were rude to my family also. This was upsetting to my family and my mom was just recovering from heart surgery. The bartender threatened physical violence against my brother in law in front of the manager. He said if I weren't on the clock.... We left after that due to we are not physically violent people like Nick's staff. This staple in Hagerstown, MD has had a reputation of delicious food and great service for decades. However, after attending a recent holiday party, I'm wondering what happened to that wonderful food. The restaurant is famous for its crab cakes, which I've had in the past, and they are, indeed, great. This time I decided to try something different after hearing a recommendation from our waitress: the almond crusted chicken with a honey mustard glaze. At first glance, the dish looked beautiful and smelled even better; however, when I tried to cut it with my knife, I could barely slice through it. The chicken was tough and dry and I struggled to eat it without taking a sip of water with each bite. Since I was attending a party, I didn't want to make a fuss, but there is no reason a breaded chicken breast should be cooked to oblivion like that. The two sides I chose were a house salad, which was fine, and Mediterranean rice. I'm not sure what made the rice "Mediterranean", but I do know that it was so loaded with pepper and under cooked that is was virtually inedible. The restaurant was pretty busy that evening, but that does not excuse how badly the food was prepared, which is a shame because it has never been so subpar in the past. To top it off, just about everything is overpriced. Had the food been higher quality and cooked properly, I wouldn't have minded paying those prices, but I could have purchased chicken and rice at less expensive restaurants and enjoyed them thoroughly. Our waitress was fine. Not overly friendly, but very efficient. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll patronize Nick's Airport Inn again in the future. read more

Took my mom here for mother's day. When making the reservation they asked if I wanted dining room or lounge. Without having been there in a very long time I didn't know what to choose. I wrongly chose the dining room. Although the atrium part of the dining room is nice and bright, the rest of the dining room is darker and very dated, like eating in the 80s. The lounge however was very nice and there was even a live pianist. The food however did not disappoint. We had three in our party and one chose the sea scallops with mushroom risotto, another had the crab cakes and the third ordered the NY Strip cooked medium. Sides ordered were Greek salad, asparagus with hollandaise and red potatoes. Everything was made and cooked to perfection. We ordered the lemon mascarpone cake and peanut butter pie for dessert. Delicious! Service was very good, she was very pleasant and efficient. All in all a very nice experience. Next time I'll ask to be seated in the lounge. read more

Nick's is fine dining at it's best, and one of the most unexpected gems you'd ever hope to find. They're slightly north of the City of Hagerstown, right on RT 11...slightly South of the Pennsylvania line, at the Hagerstown Airport. I've been by here many times over the years, but hadn't stopped in until a few months back for a nice leisurely lunch. The atmosphere is beautiful, a great place for a crowd, there were some business lunches while I was there, as well as a group that looked like old friends meeting for an afternoon meal...they can accommodate any crowd, and they have banquet rooms for weddings and parties and such. The main lobby has so many pictures on the wall of their history there, and plenty of reviews posted on the wall as you walk in...Take a minute to look, it's really cool seeing how they've changed and evolved through the decades. All the waitresses were wonderful, and had masks on the entire time, which I greatly appreciated. The food: Started out with the French onion soup and a Greek salad, and it was wonderful! The soup was the real deal, just what I had hoped, complete with the broiled cheese on top! Homemade stock was flavorful and not too salty, just perfect!! Salad with house dressing was fresh and just right, full of feta and olives and onions and tomatoes, just as it should be! Nick's is known for their seafood, which I believe is trucked in every morning from Baltimore....the crab cake platter was spectacular, literally so much crab in there I was pleasantly surprised. Very little filler, and it held together perfectly and was the best I've ever had. So not kidding. The side of French fries were hand cut, and perfectly fried....perfection! I even had desert, and they don't disappoint. Iced tea was freshly made and my glass was never empty, they're so good with refills! Although I dined alone that day, I could definitely see myself bringing a date here for a nice meal, or a few friends for a nice afternoon to catch up over some wonderful food! For what you get, the prices are reasonable I think. Definitely above the norm you'd expect in the area, but for the atmosphere and quality of the food, and service, it's a bargain. It reminds me a bit of The Lemont in Pittsburgh, but without the big city prices...also Nick's crab cakes are so much better! For years this has been our favorite restaurant to celebrate special occasions, so last night's dinner was a a real shocker on so many fronts. Everything started out fine as we got there early before any crowd. Not to put a bad light only on our server as she was obviously overwhelmed as the crowds started gathering. There was a maitre d' and Hostess on duty at the time. The Hostess took our drink menu and that was the only interaction from either of them all evening. Our meal's finally came....and there is where the problems began. First one of our party ordered a wedge salad that didn't come until his main course, and the waitress apologized and offered to 'box it up' instead of just returning it to the kitchen and removing it from the bill. The fillet I ordered was to be medium rare and it came well done, portions of our dinners never made it to the table, drink orders never came and management never came to apologize or offer to compensate our pricey bill for the poor quality and service provided. On our way out another Hostess asked how our meal was, and we informed her of our experience, her reply was sorry to hear that...with no effort to resolve the issue. So sad to see the decline in service at what was one of our favorite places. I hope the owners react to this and other reviews that pointed out the lack of quality and service. read more

Went for Mother's day, made reservations for 5, when we arrived we were told there was in fact not a reservation, had to wait while they cleared a table for us. Took a few minutes but we were sat without an issue. The ambiance of this place is like your grandmothers pink bedroom in the 1980's. Very Very dated. It was really hot and stuffy as well, felt like the heat was up to the 80's to match the 80's decor. My greek salad was missing the single olive and the piece of feta that was supposed to make it a greek salad but the dressing was nice. 3 of us got the prime rib and although a bit fatty, they were all cooked properly and were tasty, for the side, you had a choice of potatoes that were kind of over cooked, a mix of carrots and zucchini which was mostly just carrots or for an extra $4 you could get asparagus with hollandaise. 2 of us got the asparagus and let me tell you, charging an extra $4 for 4 pieces of asparagus and cold sauce was a waste and highly over priced. We live 25 minutes away and drive all the way here specifically to see Amanda at the bar. At least once per week. She remembers what we ordered from the last time we visited. Every. Single. Time. It's like cheers. She knows our names, and how we like our favorite drinks without asking. I LOVE THIS. As a business owner with staffing for 4 companies, I have tremendous respect for her work ethic. Amanda hustles so efficiently, she can serve a bar 3 people deep for happy hour, then the regular crowd for dinner at the bar without skipping a beat. Never one time has an order come out wrong. She knows the menu inside and out. She's friendly without going overboard. Dave and Jenn are great bartenders too. I guess our schedule just meshes well with when Amanda works. And I imagine the other servers are equally driven. I observe low turnover with staff, but we just always sit at the bar. Food. Is. Amazing. It's fresh, delicious, interesting, and authentic. It's a destination for Maryland crab cakes. And don't overlook the Millionaire burger. Cowboy steak comes out sizzling. But I always lean toward a fish dish. Tonight was an herbed Salmon over a house made tomato sauce with chickpeas and sautéed garlic spinach. It was the best special I've had yet. They have a great wine cellar to match any discerning taste )my husband is FROM Napa, and they carry his well-researched favorites). Plus a full bar with an extensive selection of liquors for specialty cocktails. I was cautiously optimistic to return to Nick's after nearly 20 years, but was so so pleasantly surprised by my visit... Location: Great spot in Hagerstown at the air field -- while you can't see planes as much as you can at the other restaurant nearby, it's easily accessible from both Hagerstown and Greencastle/Chambersburg and has plenty of parking, etc. etc. Staff/Service: The staff was great from the moment we walked in the door and throughout our meal! Our waitress was happy to answer any questions we had and checked back frequently after the food was served to make sure everything was alright, etc. Food: This is where Nick's really surprised me! I ordered the vegan quinoa bowl and it was, without a doubt, one of the best vegan meals I've had at a restaurant that doesn't just do vegan/vegetarian food. The vegetables and the quinoa were cooked perfectly and the addition of the balsamic glaze and some kind of pesto were awesome (not to mention the chickpeas and pepitas that added a nice crunch/texture!). I could seriously eat that bowl everyday and be happy about it. In addition to my entree, I also got a side order of the mushrooms and a salad (included with the entree). The rest of my party got a variety of seafood/meat dishes and spoke highly of what they got -- so while I can't speak to it directly, they were all very happy with the food as well. Price: Yes, Nick's is on the high end of food for the Tri-State Area ($20+), but I think it's definitely worth the price. My bowl came in at a reasonable $17 -- which, with the addition of the sides, I think is certainly reasonable -- especially if you're considering coming for some kind of special occasion. Have gone to this restaurant regularly over the past 30 years and have noticed service going down hill during my last few visits but last night was the WORST. I was there celebrating a friends 60th birthday. Server was very unfriendly, inattentive and slow. Ordered my stand by dish of crab cakes which arrived smelling of ammonia and tasting like rotten fish. Neither the server or manager seemed very concerned. Server told me and another guest that crab cakes were sent back the day before for same reason. I was still charged tax on the entree and had an 18% gratuity added by the server. Went on a Wednesday at 5:30. I have been to Nicks many times and last night was terrible! I got the Stuffed jumbo shrimp with lump crabmeat. $34. Consisted of three cocktail sized shrimp maybe U25s, and no lump crabmeat. Oh was supposed to be in imperial sauce..dry dry dry so over cooked. Big dinner plate with 3 little shrimp on it! Not even a piece of parsley! No vegetable offered just a baked potato with a side salad. Salad was good. I don't mind paying a high amount for good food but this was not worth the cost. My guess about $5. or less in ingredients. I did pay a 20% tip as it wasn't the servers fault. I will not be going again. Disappointing. read more

Nice bar, live piano player (warning it can get noisy if you are eating in the bar area when its busy. Sit in the main dining room if this is an issue for you or you have intimate talk going on) Personally i like the bar atmosphere lots of people having good food and drink. Lots of people watching available. The food has always been solid at Nick's when i have gone. This trip i had the deuce my cousin Hacker and my Aunt Julie in tow. Deuce and i were down for "Old Home Week" in Greencastle PA. After some fresh and tasty oysters I went with the chicken "en chemise" chicken breast chunks mushrooms and a savory gravy all tucked in a large philo dough pastry. Very good. Hack went old school with a New York strip. A current culinary professional he deemed it a solid piece of meat. Thumbs up. Julie went with the coconut shrimp which was an ample portion of jumbo shrimp lightly battered in coconut and deep fried. Not greasy and quite tasty it comes with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. The deuce's hamburger was the only disappointment it was a bit to charred for her taste. For dessert Hack and i had to have Nick's coconut cream pit. WOW. I dont put much past Gregg's desserts in RI but this pie was excellent. A large slice with a coconut meringue on top instead of the usual scoop of whipped cream. A++. Well there is a lot I can say here and unfortunately non of it is about the food. My wife and I never made it that far, we left after the water was brought to the table. So I was warned by some coworkers first, but I decided to keep an open mind and try it. When we first walked in to the lobby it was nice and we were greeted promptly. Once we went inside to the seating area, it was a blast from the past of early 1980's decor. YIKES!!!! We also noticed that my wife and I were the youngest there by 30-40 years. No that there is anything wrong with that, but we were looking for a little different scene. We went to eat when it was their "seafood fest" and my wife and I both eat seafood, but I did not want to be forced to order it if I didn't want to. The worst part was, was that their online menu reflected a different "non-all seafood" menu, one of the reason I made reservations. The waitress came over and could see that we were not happy and really didn't do anything to quell our fears except tell us that there were two steaks on the menu we could choose from...not helpful. So interesting thing that I noticed. They offer Jumbo Lump Crab cakes on their regular menu and on there Seafood feast menu. However the crab cakes on the seafood menu are more expensive. I guess it must be better crab cakes. We decided not to stay and on my way out I asked for the manager to inform him that their menu online was not the same as it was at the table and he had a pampas smile and said "yea sorry about that"...kind of want to punch him. The hostess also informed us that there were two steaks on the menu to choose from....still not helpful. So my wife and I left and went to Runway's just around the corner. Check out my review there, mush better. We will never go back to this place and inform others of the below standard restaurant this is. Do your self a favor and do not make reservations here. Not impressive. Been here about 3 times. The ambiance is decent but the food is ok most of the time. Today I had the burger and it was gross. I never send food back but couldn't help myself. Requested the duck wontons as replacement and they are not very good. I'll be back because choices are limited around here but tonight was awful. I started eating at Nick's about 46 Years ago. The restaurant was much different then, much smaller and a little lonely on a cold winter night. Nick use to sit an empty in the dinning room doing paperwork. He and I would talk and I told him how good his food was. He offered an Aero-Stat Porterhouse Steak that was really great. Another favorite was was a rack of lamb with the tenderloin remove whole from the ribs served grilled to perfection on top of the ribs. He also served excellent crab cakes. I dined her throughout the 70's. I returned in 1990 for a great meal. Well, my wife and I returned last night for the first time in about 25 years. Sad to say Nick has passed on and his son is now running the restaurant. While the menu has changed (no more Aero-Stat Porterhouse or Rack Of Lamb, but the Crab Cakes are even better than I remember. My wife's Filet of Sole with Crab Imperial was outstanding. We enjoyed oysters on the half-shell and Huge Crab Fingers for appetizers. For desert we split a piece of fresh Coconut Cream Pie. It's nice to know that some things actually improve with age. The then Baltimore Sunpapers reviewer, John Dorsey, reviewed Nick's Airport Inn back in the 1970's gave it a rave review. Great food, especially for this area! Atmosphere is nice, causal is acceptabe but you would probably feel more comfortable in business casual - guys slacks and a polo or button up, no tie. Ladies slacks and a top or casual dress. Really not a sweatshirt and jeans place but they won't turn you away. Was not impressed with the dessert selection read more
