My family went there for Mothers Day Lunch. I have a hard time believing all these excellent reviews because our food was so terrible. There were 9 of us so I saw and tasted a wide variety. This place used to be one of the places to go, but now the food is just over priced and nothing special. I had quiche, it was nothing special it could have come from the frozen section of the grocery store. Crab cakes really not great more filling than crab. Salad small portion and no big deal. Prime Rib was only about 1/4 inch thick. Plus they only give you one little side. I truly wish they would get their act together. Also we asked to get soup and salad which was on the pub menu, no they could not do that because it was the Saturday before mothers day. So what can I say about the service. read more

While visiting friends in Marshall, Mi., we enjoyed a delightful dinner at Schuler's . It was the "go to place in town". The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, & very helpful. We had a great meal of beef, fish, & pasta, fine wines, & a super local blueberry dessert. This is a 100 year old restaurant...and kind of feels like one. I suppose I'm more partial to open space dining with lots of natural light and this place feels like a German pub of days gone by with plenty of history in the woodworks. Went here for a team dinner and were seated in a private room. The appetizers were a bit forgettable and the prime rib was ok. read more

Love the atmosphere and service but food is lacking. We had a fish chowder that was served luke warm and lacked much flavor. Our daughters had fish and chips and chicken strips which they did not think was very good. My husband had walleye which he said was very bland. I had fried chicken which has corn flake coating. I have never had it this way before but I did not care for it at all. It was fried nicely, crunchy on outside and moist inside but did not care for the taste. I guess they are using corn flakes because of Kelloggs close by. Mashed potatoes were again lacking much flavor. I think using some salt and pepper would do a world of good. The green beans and cole slaw were good. We don't live in the area and stopped because we had heard so much about it. Nice atmosphere. Highly over priced for quality of food. It was ok but certainly not what I had looked forward to after rantings of my fiance and his mom. What a great find! Thanks for the wifi! The food was just what we needed after a long drive. The burgers were perfect. We also had a couple of salads and they were delicious as well. Went there for New Year's eve (12/31/16). I ordered the stuffed shrimp - not good and was not fresh shrimp (which one would expect at the $29 -$32 prince point). It was served with a mound of bland mashed potatoes (who serves shrimp with mashed potatoes)? Others in my party ordered steak and pot roast - steak was not seasoned and pot roast was very average and served at slightly above room temp. I am not sure what the appeal is to Schuler's. We keep going hoping the dining experience will improve - it has not. The food is simply not good and the prices do not align with the quality and overall taste of the food. WILL NOT BE BACK!! I assume most of the regulars are long-time customers (seems like an older crowd) without much perspective or context when it comes to comparing quality of food. The menu prices are way too high. We had a family reunion on Dec. 8, 2018. The wait staff was fine, the food was very unsatisfactory. Butterfly pork chops super thin and very overlooked and dry. Onion soup thickened with uncooked rue. Brisket sandwiches very dry and poor quality. Pecan crusted chicken cut while prepared and lost natural juices. Schuler's is an old, well established tavern in Marshall, Michigan. The environment is upscale rustic. I like the restaurant facilities and location but the food is bland, boring and overpriced. Knowing and respecting the great history of this establishment left me a little disappointed. Stopped for lunch and was hit with a very high $15 sandwich cost and not with the service to match. Love the pub side of the restaurant and the laid back atmosphere. A few of my favorites are the Pub Nachos, the WInston French Dip and the Traverse Bay Chicken Flatbread. Save room for dessert, there isn't a bad pick in my opinion. read more

A family friend recommended we go here so we drove about 40 minuets to get to this place so I was really hoping for some good food. Some people say it has a "historical feel" and "it has character" but I didn't get that vibe I felt pretty cramped and the place had no natural lighting so it was pretty dark. The service is really good and me and my friends were treated very well. Also the food did not let down, the chicken burger I had was full of flavor and the fries were nice and crispy. But my only food complaint is that my burger was too soggy and ended up falling apart so I had to eat the rest with my fork and knife. We ate here for Thanksgiving 2013 and I have to say it was a real disappointment. The $25 for a basic turkey dinner with few vegetables and dessert costing extra was way over priced for the quality and quantity of food. More than this, however, was the poor service. Our server was basically never around and simply handed off the food. The entire meal there we had just one water refill and really no opportunity to ask for anything. Yes it is Thanksgiving, and yes they were busy, but management needs to either do it right our close for the holidays. My conclusion is that it was a poorly run establishment that could get away with it due to limited choice. Personally I won't be back. read more

We LOVE the atmosphere of the newly renovated grill room in Winston's Pub!!! We also love that we can sit the more casual atmosphere of the pub and enjoy the amazing dining room entrees. Winston's has a smaller menu than it's bigger brother Schuler's next door. The prices are cheaper but the atmosphere is just as nice. Wood paneling and huge fireplaces are warm and inviting, reminding you that the place was once an inn for weary travelers. We had chicken fingers and nachos that were above average for a pub but my wife's bacon cheeseburger was thick and loaded with extras. Great food. read more

My wife and I ate in the Winston's pub side of the restaurant a few weeks ago, during a huge snow storm near closing time, as we had ust arrived in town from Chicago and it was the only thing still open due to the time and the snow. My wife had the turkey Reuben and I had the TWO NAPKIN BEEF BRISKET. The Reuben was goo,d the brisket sandwich was one of the best pub sandwiches I have ever had! That sandwich, along with a full bar and good beers on tap, mean that next time I am in Marshall, I will definitely go back here. read more

We have been to Schuler's Pub for grill night on Thursdays several times over the summer. Our most recent meal included beef brisket, barbecued chicken, and pork belly all grilled to order on the outdoor patio grill. This was a very tasty meal with nice presentation and accompaniments. The service was prompt and attentive even though the pub was quite busy this particular night. For the same price as a dinner at Applebee's, we got to eat in a classy place with a great atmosphere and excellent service. We will definitely be back! read more

My first time eating at Schuler's proved to be non eventful. I had the Autumn Orecchueta with Salmon. It was not very good, in fact I only ate half of it. The seafood chowder was excellent and loaded with seafood. I probably try a burger next time read more

Great Roadside Find: You are on a road trip and you see a sign off of the interstate that tells you to go to a restaurant that has been standing since 1909...you have to get off the road and go there. I was only let down to find out that the restaurant was not a traditional German Restaurant...but the food was excellent and creative. There were two dinning rooms to choose from. The Restaurant which was very over priced but the food looked very good. And the Pub which was a cozy little bar and reasonable prices. We choose the Pub side. My wife had the French Dip...it was really good. I had the iron skillet steak sandwich with roasted red peppers, puree of onion and blue cheese...what a delicious combination of flavors!!! I could hardly believe I was finding such a yummy meal on the road and all because I followed a road sign. You must also try onion rings too. They also have there own brewed beer here...it was really good...I had to have the beer because I found out I could only get the beer in two places in town...now that is a beer I must have. The waitress we had was very nice and friendly. She was a great person to hang out with but a terrible waitress when it came to selling the food on the menu. She could hardly recommend anything to me on the menu. When I asked her about the iron skillet steak, she said that is was tough and that alot of people set it back. I was kind of shocked by that comment because the best thing about an iron skillet steak is that if done right it is so tender. I didnt trust her judgement and still tried the steak and it was very tasty. The waitress said that she was a chicken finger kind of girl and could recommend the chicken fingers as being really good...at that point...I could have went to any fast food joint off of the road. eehhhh, it was ok. I took my staff here for lunch. We agreed on Schuler's after I posed the question "where is the most expensive place in town??" I was told in unison, "Schuler's!" I was excited, but with Marshall being a small town, I didn't expect much. The place is very cute, kinda throw-back old timey German pub feel, with a decent menu. The avocado bruschetta was weird. Nice try to be a bit avant-garde or forward-thinking in a small town, but seemed out of place on the menu. My salmon was marginal, at best. The sauce was a nice beurre blanc, but the fish itself tasted of brown sugar?? It had an odd sweet taste that was so off-putting, I only managed a few bites. That flavor profile belongs on pork, not fish. Gak. I'm thinking my fish may have been prepared on a surface shared by another menu item. The bread "sticks" are hand-made (also for sale in the lobby) were very good. The pastry area in the lobby was nice and a great place for tourists to stock up on interesting bakery items. As for the food, stick to the staples. read more

While visiting the area for a business function, I was excited to try out this local place. We had 14 people in our group so they gave us a private room. I thought that was really nice. That is where my positive comments end. Since we were in a private room, I felt that we did not receive adequate service. We only had one server, which was not the issue. The issue was that she was the most unfriendly, unhappy person I may have ever encountered in the service industry. She was very slow with drinks. We had to specifically ask when we needed to order more. I asked for crackers for my soup but ended up eating it before she returned because it was getting cold. This turned out to be a good idea because she never brought the crackers. The private room we were in had several flies buzzing around. One ended up in my beer. I asked for a new one. When she brought my beer back, it tasted different, not in a good way. I don't know if she brought me a different kind than what I had ordered or what, but I didn't drink it. I had the stuffed shrimp for my entrée, which was average. For dessert, I ordered the banana cake which sounded delicious on the menu. As with everything else, I was extremely disappointed. One of the people in our group had his chair break. When we told her, she expressed that the chairs weren't the best and that it had happened before. I will not be returning to this restaurant nor will I be recommending it to anyone that travels to this area. read more

Back in the 1970s when I was a high school student, Schuler's was the place to go to impress your prom date, even from a town an hour away. It was very expensive, but it was magical and the food was memorable, so it was worth it. After a long hiatus, we came back a couple of years ago, and were pleased to see local Gunthorp chicken named on the menu, raising our hopes that quality ingredients were being used to justify the upscale menu prices. (It is a lost cause if you don't start with excellent ingredients.) Now we see that Gunthorp chicken is no longer named on the menu, seeming to confirm the conclusion that mediocre ingredients are likely behind our recent underwhelming experiences. On more than one occasion, the food was nothing special. With so many new restaurants in the region featuring creative chefs using great ingredients, there are better places to spend the high dollar. read more

My husband and I stopped in after seeing the bill board while traveling through. The heritage cheese and flatbread our waitress set on the table when taking our drink order was tasty and hard to ignore. I absolutely enjoyed my veggie burger, and the Swiss onion soup had such a wonderful savory flavor, however just a bit to thick, a tad less flour would have been truly perfect. I would order it again definitely, just request it a bit thinner. My husband enjoyed his beef hamburger, he said it had a wonderful flavor and their homemade buns were perfect, and absolutely completed both my veggie burger and my husband's beef burger. I would like to mention the service we received from our waitress, a young lady named Reagan. She was very sweet and attentive from the time we sat down to the time we left.
