But what stole my heart more was the steady stream of older adults getting their bakery treats. I mean this place was BUSY. And then there were five or six more people parking and walking to the door as I left. The bakery had copious amounts of treats to accommodate the demand. The community loyalty is earned for sure since my frosted apple turnover was delicious. And with crumbly pastry, sweet, moist apple filling and creamy frosting, I was in heaven. After reading many encouraging reviews on Yelp, I decided to make the drive out there and see if I agreed. It was near impossible to find this place using a map because the streets in Watervliet are all cut up. Third Avenue is segmented and doesn't run straight thru. After two failed attempts, I decided to call for directions since I was going to be near that area. Finally I located it. I found a decent selection of donuts and breads there, and selected a variety of different glazed, filled and cake donuts to sample. Much to my disappointment, this place suffers from the same fate as many other donut makers in our area. The donuts were thick, heavy, and dry from the hard water here. No disrespect to the owners of this establishment. They are doing the best they can with what they have to work with. As far as those reviewers that gave them five stars, I'd bet that they have never lived anywhere else to know what they are missing. This is why I sincerely believe that the water the batter is mixed with makes all the difference in the world. So my search for the perfect donut continues. The rye bread is bland, the donuts are greasy (grease used too many times), and generally everything is below the standards set by Jay, the previous owner. Great little bakery. The glazed donuts are the best in the area. The Jelly cake with Whipped Cream frosting is also amazing. You can tell everything is individually hand made not from some machine because they are all unique and not everything looks perfect. I started going to Schuyler Bakery many years ago when I grew up in the area. I have been living in California since I graduated from St. Rose and on every trip back I make a pilgrimage to Schuyler Bakery. The "Sinkers" or Old Fashioned donuts that they make every day but Thursday are my favorite. I also like the Cider donuts, the Jelly donuts, and the Glazed donuts. The morning glazed bars, the breads and hard-rolls are just like you remember them. The Dinner rolls, both the Butter rolls and the Snowflake rolls are a must purchase as well, if they have any left when you arrive. The Cakes and Pies are great and my Stepfather loves the eclairs. At Christmas time the line is frequently out the door and we often run into folks we know from all over the area. If you have not visited Schuyler lately they are now closed Sunday and Monday. Loved the bakery in the past. Some of the most delicious cakes around. Recently when i ordered from there, i got the impression of a business too big for it's britches so to speak. I did not get the order i placed for one of my pies. When i offered to come back the next day for the item which was wrong, i got the "We are taking no more orders" story. The elderly lady behind the counter did not treat me with any respect either.Because only the size was different on one order, i decided to just take what i had because of the holiday season. When i got back home and served the pies, the cream on the chocolate cream pie tasted like lard. The filling tasted like it came out of a can. The punkin pie was watery. Hands down the worst customer service I have ever received! The staff was so unbelievably rude and indifferent. This is the second time I have been here. The first time, I thought, maybe it was a fluke. I just went again, and I was met with even worse service, if that is even possible. You are better off buying Lofthouse brand nut free baked goods from the grocery stores. It is not worth the trip to go to Schuyler bakery and be treated in such a rude way. As a mother of a young son who has many food allergies, I am generally unable to buy treats from a bakery. Someone from work told me this bakery is peanut free so I went over and talked to the owner about what that means exactly and I'm happy to say he is TRULY 100% peanut free. Even the chocolate and chocolate chips are purchased from a peanut free facility. He has a young man who is allergic to peanuts come in and try any new things they make. He doesn't use any peanut oil, or peanuts, and he doesn't even let his employees come in to the building with PB&J sandwiches. I was so grateful to be able to purchase a birthday cake for my son from there and it was a hit. The cake was delicious and I'm looking forward to trying his other sweets as well. I recommend the eclairs, though I wish they had more chocolate on top, the custard is delicious and the choux pastry crisp. Nothing is old and soggy at this bakeshop. For $6.00, you can get a buttercream layer cake that rivals anything in the area. The frosting is very sweet - but isn't that why we eat it? They were sold out of Boston Cream Pie, but I look forward to trying it and will report back. This is the kind of place I have been in search of for years! Okay- Have now tried the Boston Cream Pie and it was delicious. The frosting was slightly too sweet for my taste, but I have not had anything in this area nearly as good. Really good donuts at pretty low prices. Schuyler is a small bakery, like most American bakeries they make bread and sweet baked goods ... like cakes. I have only purchased donuts from Schuyler, mainly because they are cheap (U$0.50 in 2010), and good - much better than Dunkin Donuts. Schuyler opens at 5:30am, I would suggest going early in the morning to get the donuts when they are fresh. read more

Stopped in to get some sweet treats and you would think from the online positive reviews it would be great. Anything but that was reality. The oatmeal raisin cookies were subpar at best . They weren't soft and full of raisins at all . The rainbow little squares were not fresh and the Schuyler Bars did'nt taste great either. To be honest all of it kind of tasted very similar. The gentleman that helped us was polite and all but he left us while i wanted to buy some dinner rolls but he ended up doing us a favor in the long run. read more

I must say I am not a huge baked goods fan. That said, I have been to this establishment 3 or 4 times and was very happy with all the baked goods I got from them. Additionally, I called them this morning to order 21 éclairs and asked if I could pick them up on the way home from work. To my surprise, they said of course they would have them ready for me. People speak highly about this place. It's a small mom and pop bakery; what's not to love?! Unfortunately i couldn't have anything they make. I was informed that EVERYTHING is made with shortening. Not delicious natural butter like your grandma used, but super processed soybean oil "shortening". I'm allergic, but also, gross. He told me it's a cost issue. As someone who was born and raised in Watervliet, Schuyler Bakery holds a special place in my heart. The good thing about Schuyler is - it's a place that still holds it's own and doesn't rely on past memories and previous successes! Simply put, they still know how to deliver the (baked) goods! Even though I live in Niskayuna now, I make the short trip whenever I can and always get my birthday cake through them every year. You've gotta love the butter cream frosting of the cakes--the best in the area! And the prices are ridiculously cheap ($11 for a round b-day cake that serves way more than eight). The only drawback (and it's a small one) is that they don't take credit/debit cards. Here's hoping that Schuyler continues to hold strong and steady and doesn't succumb to the lame Hannaford and Price Chopper bakery giants. read more

We made a special trip here because we were impressed by the doughnuts a coworker brought to work recently. This is a very small, old bakery but they have a large variety. The website says they are a peanut free bakery. I purchased a variety of things, apple cider doughnuts, éclairs, hard rolls, Italian bread and lemon bars. We ordered pecan pies at Christmas and they were wonderful. I have since bought several different cakes and they were quite good. Schuyler knows how to make Kaiser rolls.
