I'm so sorry to admit that I haven't been here in years! I used to come regularly with my Nonna as a kid. I'm so glad that I decided to visit again! This place is the best of the best! It's cute inside and the service was friendly and informative. They let me know that EVERYTHING, even the puff pastry is made in house!!! Very impressive! I bought a couple glazed donuts to make up for the horrible pastry and donuts that I had this week from elsewhere. I'm so glad I did because they were fresh made and moist and the glaze was still wet! If nothing else they made was good, I would go back just for the glazed donuts! But everything is great so let's keep chatting! I originally decided to drive there to get the cinnamon bread that I remember as a kid. Unfortunately they were sold out. But they did have what they called Easter bread, which is s rich egg loaf, similar to Challah with red and golden raisins in it and the dough is lemon flavored. I bought a loaf of that and brought it home and made epic French toast with it! I highly suggest you do the same! I also tried their spinach pastry and "pizza" pastry, delicious! All the dough here just melts in your mouth without leaving a leathery film on your tongue which means it's real pastry made with butter! Very disappointed! Years ago, this bakery had the best donuts ever. I went first thing this morning, 8 AM, for the first time in years to pick up a dozen donuts. I ordered six glaze, three jelly and three Boston cream. First of all, when I get home and open the box, there are six glazed and six jelly. The order was wrong. I started with a glazed doughnut, remembering how they were the best glaze ever. It was stale! I tried a second one to see if it was just that one doughnut, and that was stale also! The jelly was worse! The donuts were actually crunchy. Once again stale. It appears that they sell stale old donuts at regular price. I could see if I got there at three or 4 PM. But this was 8 AM, first thing in the morning. These donuts should've been extremely fresh. They were obviously made the day before and sold as fresh. Never again! read more

At the start of 2024, we treated my mother-in-law to a donut treasure map road trip in CDNY, traveling to a half-dozen different bakeries to pick out donuts to indulge in for a birthday celebration like none-other. I read MANY blogs, yelp reviews, and social media updates to compile the list of places to check out, and I was surprised that a little spot I had never heard of before called Schuyler Bakery continued to pop up in my research. I knew we needed to make it one of the stops on the donut tour, and it was 100% the right decision. These donuts were out of this world delicious. The exact right texture and mouthfeel I personally want out of a donut. Sweet, but not too sweet that you can't enjoy every last morsel. I also loved the variety available... maybe 10 different donuts all together at the after-lunch part of the day, all classics and nothing dripping in over-frosted goo or crazy toppings. These are the donuts that donuts are named after. We will definitely travel out to Watervliet to visit the small, old school vibes kinda bakery for a dozen or so of these again. A++. read more

I ordered a bday cake for my husband a few months ago. I asked for chocolate frosting with very colorful decorations - balloons, confetti, writing, etc. I emphasized bright colors. My daughter picked it up & I was shocked to see no color at all. Tan balloons (tan balloons???), tan writing, tan piping. It was completely washed out & boring. The opposite of what I ordered. Too late to fix it so we served it. It was disgusting. We couldn't eat it & had to throw it out. We went out for ice cream instead. We went to Hannaford for a bday cake this weekend. We haven't been there in a while and finally decided to go again; well, this time was the worst thing I ever had. The donuts smelled odd like old oil, tasted like they had oil poured over them instead of glaze and made me very ill after eating one. We were there early in the morning so all the donuts should have been fresh but obviously were not. Awesome donuts both cake and yeast to sit all preferences. Just minutes north of Albany this place was fantastic. Picked up 2 dozen mixed as well as a blueberry coffee cake and the total was barely over $30, what a steal. Will definitely be back next time paying through Albany. read more

We bought a carrot cake and a chocolate pie for Easter dinner. The order came out exactly as requested. The cake was excellent. Lots of cream cheese frosting and great tasting homemade cake. The chocolate pie was not up to that level, but was certainly acceptable. read more

First off the donuts were stale and second they were cooked in old oil. I was very excited about going to this place after seeing the reviews. So I was very disappointed biting into a stale donut fried in nasty old oil. And the donuts were actually very oily. On top of that there was a fly in the store that could land on the donuts. It was close to closing time and she had so many donuts and cakes left. I was actually surprised she didn't throw in an extra donut knowing it was the end of the day and knowing that they were stale to begin with and fried in old oil. I come about once or twice a month from Lake George to this area and I usually go to Bella Napoli and get a few donuts but I thought I'd try somewhere new. My daughter is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. She is nearly 12 and had never had a proper doughnut before coming to Schuyler Bakery. Love this bakery so much! They made my wedding cake in September 1994 and the cake I bought the other day was just as delicious as my wedding cake. Their frosting is not too sweet and the vanilla cake is so light and fluffy. The doughnuts are so delicious and the apple and raspberry lemon turnovers are to die for. Schuyler Bakery has been my go-to for Paska for maybe the last 10 years. I used to make my own, but I've never been able to achieve the consistency of lightness that I've come to rely upon with their bread. Every Easter and Christmas I go to pick up a small Paska ($5) and one each of their Prune, Poppy Seed, and Cheese coffee cakes ($5 each). These coffee cakes are huge and delicious. I will typically freeze half of each coffee cake since there is always so much for just three of us to eat at Christmas and Easter meals that half of three coffee cakes will last a week. This place has been here forever! I grew up with my family getting cakes from here for many birthdays. I personally don't like traditional cakes, but my family always raved about the frosting. I'm more of a cheesecake or ice cream cake person. While visiting home, I was interested in checking out Schuyler. I have nut allergies/sensitivities, so I thought it was great that they don't use peanuts. The interior and exterior of this place doesn't seem to have changed one bit over the years. It's quite drab, but don't worry they have tasty baked goods. My friend and I picked up an assortment of cookies, donuts and also a lemon bar. I tried the fudge drop cookies and the Easter sugar cookies. I didn't partake in the donut debauchery. I was especially impressed by how great the lemon bar tasted, I don't usually eat that particular type of fruit very often. The cookies were basic, but good. I would say the quality of the items was similar to the more upscale Bella Napoli in Latham. Bella has a nicer interior and the items are much more beautifully displayed. Beware of the lines here around holidays like Christmas and Easter. It might be wise to see if you can place your order in advance. I would say the prices here are fair. read more

So, let's say you wanted a donut and perhaps some rolls but you didn't want to go to the usual supermarkets. Let's also say you wanted to try someplace beyond the typical Italian bakeries and the DD. Where does that leave you? If you, like me, have a passion for small mom and pop places with history and charm that might lead you to Schulyer Bakery. Located in downtown Watervliet, I must have driven by it many times without really noticing it. But, one Saturday morning the misses and I ventured over here to see what they had. It was much smaller than I expected, and their selection of donuts wasn't great. They had three types of raspberry jam filled ones (glazed, sugar coated, and powdered sugar coated), a Boston creme pie donut, a fried cake, and an apple cider donut. I don't know if they rotate other flavors at other times. We purchased a couple of each type ($1 for one, or 6 for $4) and tried them at home. The raspberry iced were good if unremarkable (more jam please!). The Boston creme were fine but not as sweet as ones from other places (more custard please!). I am not sure if I like that or not, as it reminded me of a regular chocolate iced donut. The fried cakes are another matter. They are a favorite of mine, and having seen over the years other "bakeries" make them soft and flavorless these really stand out with a hearty crunch and a strong cake flavor. I think they were outstanding and perfect for dunking if you are so inclined, but they weren't very sweet. I imagine they are a love/hate proposition. Their selection of other sweet treats won't rival the big Italian bakery in the area, but I don't think they are trying to compete. Schuyler is THE old school bakery. Some might point to Bella Napoli, and they will raise some compelling points. But as opposed to the other classic regional bakeries, Schuyler is firmly rooted in the past. And that's a good thing. I hate to mention their prices, because I don't want them to change. Let's put it this way, every time I walk out of here with a bag of treats, I feel like I've just robbed a bank. Despite the weight of my bags, the cash register total is so low, that I want to add a few more things just to throw the bakery a couple extra bucks. Amazingly, good sense kicks in and I realize that I'll never be able to eat all the stuff I've already purchased, so I just turn around and head home. Some people come to bakeries for the pies, the cakes or the breads. Me? I come for the donuts. The plain cake donuts, which some people call old-fashioneds, don't look like much. They are brown. They have no glaze nor sprinkles. There's no powdered sugar to make them sweeter or cinnamon sugar for a bit of crunch. Next to the Boston cream donuts with their thick chocolate icing, these dull donuts might easily get passed over. Do not make that mistake. These old fashioned donuts are the stuff that dreams are made of. They don't have anything on them, because they are perfect just as they are. The deep fried crust is firm and crisp. It's the kind of texture you can only get from deep fat frying. And honestly, if you are going to eat something fried, you might as well make sure that it was fried well. Inside the crumb is tender, lightly sweet, and intensely flavored with the sweet spice of nutmeg. Despite how it looks, this is not a plain donut. It's the very essence of donut. And a buck you can grab two of them. That may be the best food value in the Capital Region in terms of both calories and deliciousness. The Boston cream aren't bad either. They don't have a ton of filling, and the chocolate iced donuts are packed top-to-top so two donuts create a kind of chocolate icing sandwich. Pulling them back apart is treacherous, but it does help prevent the loose chocolate topping from getting on everything. Is Schuyler really a 5* world class bakery? No. It's not. But it's not trying to be. It's an old fashioned neighborhood bakery that is making old fashioned treats for the old neighborhood. And they just don't make 'em like this anymore. It's a remnant from a bygone time, that remains exceedingly popular in Watervliet, which for better or for worse feels like the town that time forgot. read more

This bakery has been around for a very long time making Schuyler Bakery is an institution! This place is very popular and on Saturday mornings, I've sometimes seen a line out the door. They handle custom cake orders for special occasions such as weddings, celebrations, and birthdays. When I was young, everyone and everyone around town ordered their cakes from Schuyler Bakery. Besides the custom cakes, they also offer cookies (by the pound), pies, cakes, donuts, breads, and specialty seasonal items such as hot cross buns and paska. Though not fancy, all of their baked goods taste great and priced right. The hot cross buns & scones are made through Lent until Easter. The place is not very big as they keep their large trays of donuts in the front display window. I love their cider and glazed donuts, small chocolate eclairs and cream filled cookies. Double trouble........ is a good thing. Once a year Schuyler Bakery whips up a magical combination of ingredients to produce their famous Paczkis. Not that this is the only reason to visit as they have a wonderful assortment of breads, delectables, and dough. But the paczkis are special. They are a creation of DOUBLE glaze DOUBLE jelly sinfully good treats. I mark my calendar each year on Fat Tuesday, jump in the Chevy, drive to Watervliet, and pick up a box of these beauties. The service is always wonderful, the prices are easy on the wallet, and the quality is off the hook amazing. Did I mention they are the only bakery in the area that is nut free? Straight out of the 1970's this bakery serves delicious treats, has a great retro neighborhood feel, friendly service, and prices that pre-date the Carter administration. A cinnamon sugar donut, apple cider donut, and caramel apple bar = $3 flat. Winner. All were delicious and really therapeutic after a long run that morning. We will be back. Apparently this place used to be cash only but they now accept credit/debit cards so they're slowly making their way out of the 1970's, but I hope their prices stay the same! read more

This place is the real deal. The kind of bakery that only exists in fables and lore of a bygone era. (Except it's real, obv.) Recently purchased an assortment of whatever looked best that fortuitous Friday: Cider donut: Sweet and sugary, just how they should be (seasonally available on the weekends only) Boston creme donut: A few incredible bites of the best memories of childhood... so... good... Handful of "Italian cookies" (is there a better name for these delightful little things?): A green leaf, mini layer cake bite, etc. So delicious and fresh... Total of $3. Unbelievable. What else can I say about this place that hasn't already been said. I've been eating baked goods from the Schuyler Bakery since I was little, and they've NEVER disappointed. From the cheesecake and cookies to the cakes to the donuts. Its all delicious old fashioned baked goods from a real independent bakery, something that is seemingly becoming harder and harder to find these days. Best donuts you can get anywhere. Plain donuts. Crispy and crunchy outside, pillowy and flavorful inside, just the right amount of grease (c'mon it IS a deep fried treat!!) - heavenly! For the princely sum of 30 cents!!! I suppose you might once in a while have to buy something else there... the breads are really good as are the dinner rolls. The cookies are favorites of my husband's - buttercrunch and they sometimes have a fairly good variety of sugar free cookies too. After putting it off for years, I finally stopped in. Oh boy. It was late in the day so there weren't a ton of options, but you could tell they had sold much during the day. I picked up six apple cider doughnuts for a stunning $3. That's no joke. I'm lucky this place is not in my neighborhood. Between Schuyler Bakery and their Watervliet neighbor Gus' Hot Dogs, you could have a filling dinner and dessert for probably 4 dollars. It wouldn't be healthy by any stretch of the imagination, but you would be gustatorily pleased. Watervliet is king of delicious cheap eats. UPDATE: I just had to change this to five stars. This by far is the best bakery around. The prices are so reasonable you won't believe it. They made our wedding cake 30 years ago and the quality is still great if not better. The glazed doughnuts, brownies, cupcakes, cheesecakes, cookies, long cinnamon buns that you can butter and toast like the old days, melt aways....yummy and most of all the cakes (for birthdays, showers or just because are superb. I do order them for special occasions but most of the time I will go in and point to a cake and say I want that one. They will ask what do I want written on top....lol... I just say put it in a box please with a fork it's not for any occasion just for the little piggy ME. It's an easy ride so please just stop by and try some of their treats. You will love it.
