My husband and I went to Scoot Inn for the first time last night for a concert and were very disappointed. We bought our tickets back in May and have checked all the different emails and tickets where it was stated that doors open at 7PM and concert starts at 8PM. We showed up at 7:45PM to a line down the street and were told that doors don't open until 8PM. This was a major communication issue. Then, I'm not quite sure if this is a problem with the venue or the bands, but between bands it took 30-45min to switch out. This was an obscene amount of time. It also caused the last band which we were there for to not start until 11:48PM, which felt entirely too late. Both the earlier bands also complained to the audience that they were having audio issues. Again, not sure if venue or band, but it just added to the negative experience of the night. Finally, once the band we paid money to see came on stage we pushed our way to the front of the crowd. We were three people back and could not see the band. This is definitely an issue with the venue. The stage was too low. You had to either be in the very back on the deck or right up next to the stage to see the band. This was the very disappointing cherry on top of the evening. We waited all night long through many disappointments to not even be able to see the band. They sounded great! I enjoyed listening to them, but at that point I should have just stayed home and blasted them on my stereo. read more

Stopped in for a drink shortly after they opened after day drinking on the east side. Shane Smith and the Saints were sound checking so it was cool to hear them for a bit. The inside was a lot classier than I expected, a baby grand piano, leather chairs, nice sofas and cool decor giving a nice lounge environment. The outdoor area is a good size making for a great place to listen to live music. Sam and Taj were friendly and helpful. Will be back for a show soon. read more

Such a cute little venue in a popping area in Austin Texas! I went there to see someone I have been anticipating for quite some time - Eden! And it was incredible. I hate seeing artists in huge venues where you can't really see them and you feel so far away. But no matter where you stand here, it feels like you are so close and personal with the artist. The drinks were okay, of course they were overpriced but what do you expect? My boyfriend and I got a great view on the deck next to the bar and sitting on some bar stools looking out towards the stage. It was great! The beat part about it was that once the show was over, there wasn't pushing and shoving to get out. Of course this was a lower-key show but still a lot of people nonetheless! Awesomeness! Here I am, drunk, writing about my first show - ever - in Austin. Well, this club is very fun. Inside the regulars were listening to Tejano and Mariachi music, celebrating a birthday, while several local bands played outside. You can rent the outdoor stage and charge whatever you want. I came to see The Diatribes first show, which was very "fresh" - like a carbonated soda - and I felt like I was watching them in someone's backyard. Theres's a trees, some covered benches and a stage lit by Christmas lights, giving it a totally intimate feel. But then it's weird because you notice all the broken glass and barbed wire protecting the wall and you think, "Who the hell wants to climb over the wall." Anyway, this is a cool DIY club and they have $2 specials on Schlitz (versus Denton's $1 specials, but I'll deal). read more

I'm pretty sure the actual name of this place is "Red's Scoot Inn" although most people refer to it as "The Red Scoot Inn"... but I'm NOT sure if anyone even knows who RED is anyway. I like this place as i do most places on the Eastside. Outside there is live music, picnic tables, trees and a cover charge of around $5 most days. Inside, however, is a different planet altogether. Tejano music, a small and empty dance floor complete with mirror ball and a zombie-esque statue guarding the front entrance. I'm giving the 5 stars for the real attraction - the ladies room. If you're a chick, be sure to check it out even if you dont have to go. The walls are red, appropriately enough, there are white lace curtains partitioning the stalls (so if you're into privacy you might wanna considering 'holding it in'), cow print material adorns the entry way along with a smaller piece haphazardly stapled to the wall accenting a wicker basket featuring a hand-painted texas flag (why is this here??). I think my favorite part of the decor would have to be the tiger (or is that leopard?) print "pieces" tacked around the mirror opposite from the badly framed black and white photo of Marilyn Monroe. huh? I've seen many bathrooms around town but this one, so far, is the funniest and my description doesnt do it justice, you really have to see for yourself. I heard the Historic Scoot Inn has been around for well over 100 years, so I wasn't surprised to see & feel that old-time nostalgia. Exterior: From one angle it looks like a barn, from another angle it looks like a run-down warehouse, and from another it looks like a saloon. Interior: It has an old-school Austin look, with slight modern upgrades. ALL of this adds to the unique ambiance of this cool place. I was fortunate enough to visit the Scoot Inn for the first time for the Big KRIT Pay Attention Tour. (Side Note: The event was awesome and we all had a great time.) While the outside of the venue doesn't seem all that large, the inside is pretty roomy. It accommodated the hundreds of fans with ease. It has a wooden deck where the bar is located, an adequate (but not large) stage, and copper-colored gravel that unfortunately left my vehicle's floorboard filthy! With that single negative out of the way, I loved everything else about the place. I wasn't able to tour the entire place, but there seemed to be in indoor section with bar and some games, I saw a food-truck (maybe deserts?) towards the front part of the venue too. I didn't really care for this venue. We came tonight for an ACL Late Show. Only two people were wanding for security, so the entry line stretched a couple of blocks. Everything here just seemed like a poorly executed Stubb's. The stage was awkwardly placed (and too low), the sound didn't carry to the back very well, there was a severe lack of nearby parking options, etc. Scoot Inn might be a better place to see up-and-coming bands, but it definitely felt inadequate for the crowd that was jammed inside it tonight. read more

I loved the venue! The bartenders were great but our night started out sour with the big "supervisor" in the red shirt. We showed up with our electronic tickets and one of them wouldn't pull up on my phone. The couple in front of us had the same issue. We were patiently waiting for the ticket to pull up and he butted in and said "that's why it says to print the ticket." I read the ticket to him which said "Please present this ticket at the entrance to the event." and he snapped " just go get a paper ticket!" Scoot Inn is a great piece of Texas history right near downtown Austin. It's a quaint venue where there isn't a bad seat in the house. This place definitely has a lot of old Texas character. My husband and I went here a couple weekends back to see the Strumbellas and had a great experience thanks to the stellar staff. I had broken a couple bones in my foot a few weeks before and was still recovering with crutches and a walking boot and was worried I wouldn't be able to make the show. I emailed Scoot Inn and told them about my situation and they reserved me a bar stool with my name on it and everything in an area where I didn't have to worry about having staff step on my foot. I can't say enough great things about the staff at Scoot and how much it meant to me that they did everything to make it an enjoyable experience for me. I had purchased the tickets the day they came out months back so I'm super thankful I was able to enjoy the show. I will definitely be back!!! read more

The Butthole Surfers will be sending their sounds to the sky at the Scoot. Everyone should take their time to make some time with their inner Butt. It will be audible visual mass media assault. It will be epic, because it already has been epic. Admit it...that there are times when you miss waking up to the smell of your own sweaty, smoky, stench from doing Lord knows what with Lord knows who, but you just know you most likely did it KICK ASS! What a cool historic venue to hear live music at. The inside (former in ) is straight out of a Larry McMurtry novel--even the wooden walls smell old time Western. I recently saw a show here and am now kicking myself for not seeing a band here sooner! I recall coming here several years ago but stayed indoors for a round while bar hoping on the east side. Scoot Inn is a rather nice outdoor venue with an elevated patio (prime seating/viewing) and outdoor bar. We purchased tickets to see Nathaniel Rateliff at Stubb's and the show was moved to the Scoot Inn. The show sold it within a few days and was a cheap $15 a ticket show. I am excited to have seen him at this relatively smaller venue before he really blows up. Although the show was sold out they lines were short and we rapidly entered the venue. Everyone working here was friendly. Scoot Inn serves lots of local brews like Austin Beer Works, is a full bar but the wine selection is dismal. The building that is now the "Historic" Scoot Inn opened their doors in 1871 was once a grocery store and later a restaurant. It has been various saloons/bars on and off since 1919, is rumored to be the oldest bar in Austin and reportedly has the 4th oldest liquor license in the city. Tip: if you are heading down here on a Friday or Saturday night their is a metro rail stop within blocks. read more

I never thought I would find myself dancing to Gin & Juice with my boyfriend's Mom at the Scoot Inn. That alone deserves 5 stars. Some of the best bartenders are east of I35. I came in here one night and was really wanting a glass of champagne. They sell those little individual bottles. My boyfriend ordered me one, but the bartender had to go back to the cooler to get more bottles. He came back carrying maybe 2 dozen bottles and set them down on the bar. My boyfriend's response, "Yeah, just one bottle would be fine." And just like the Longbranch, they have a decent wine selection for a dive bar. Cheers to that! read more

I've been going to the Scoot Inn since it was a Tejano bar, there was only one bartender (female owner), and the cheap disco lights were the only lights that made the dirty floor look spectacular after a couple of Tecates (since about 2002). I never seemed to mind the locals, from the neighborhood at that point, come tear it up on the dance floor, drink cheap Tecates, and grito their night away as I sat catching up with my friends who lived in the area (all who have, in the last 5 years, been living in Kyle since their home was purchased in cash by some California realtor). I actually loved the venue because of these characteristics. I have been to numerous shows here - comedy nights, conjunto nights, film screenings, and of course local and national live shows for cheap prices since 2002. SXSW shows and parties, get together's with some of my closest friends, skeeball tourneys, and even got excited whenever my friends would book themselves to play the indoor stage. I will always have a good heart for the good ol 'Historic' Scoot Inn. Great sound system and great renovations since 2002 BY FAR! I appreciate the time and money that has gone into this venue (most of that money being from loyal local patrons like me). However, just recently (at the end of May), I had a terrible night after seeing my friends play their album release show. THINGS I DIDN'T MIND: No, I didn't mind the $7 cover charge or the snide and dismissive door man comments about not having enough money to break my $20 bill. No, I did not mind the fact that my friends show was almost brought the venue at capacity (there was a huge line out the door). No, I did not mind how I had to squeeze past many sweaty bodies to get to the merch table (way in the back of the venue outside). No, I did not mind that it took about 30 minutes to get ONE beer and a shot of whiskey (hell, I expected it! my friends draw in a HUGE crowd at ANY venue they are playing). and no, I didn't mind that my friends had a very successful LP in which they sold out of all of their merch that night. THINGS THAT GOT TO ME: What I did mind was the rude bartender inside (who was by himself) that gave conflicting instructions to those waiting 20-30 minutes to get a drink ("i need everyone to line up in front of my computer") all the while taking orders from people he knew/knows and dismiss anyone standing in front of his computer. I DID mind how quick and short the bartender was to my friend (whom was working the merch table that night) when she asked for change (after she was rudely dismissed by the door guy). I DID mind that I had a $64 dollar tab at the end of the night when I only bought 3 beers and 3 whiskey shots. EVEN WITH SXSW PRICES I CANNOT FATHOM how this adds up?!!!!! I DO mind that the manager and/or anyone who works at Scoot Inn has not got back to me regarding prices for beers and shots even after repeatedly calling and emailing. (No, there is no menu online) SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR FUTURE & MINE: 1. Hire/employ at least 2 more bartenders. You should expect an album release show to be packed no matter what date/day. 2. PUT UP A MENU of prices of beers/cocktails/shots, etc ON YOUR WEBSITE. I see you have a new meat trailer. Awesome! I'd like to try it out (once I finish boycotting your venue). 3. Great sound system and sound operator(s). Sounds fantastic. Don't EVER change. 4. Keep booking my friends and locals. This is the ONLY reason why I will come out. 5. Put a little money into the girls bathroom (who knows what the men's looks like!). That restroom has not changed (besides location) since I have been coming here and that was in 2002. It's so sad. 6. Keep those porta potties. They are a hell of a lot cleaner than those inside. 7. Thank you for the beer choices. How much is a tall boy Lonestar anyway? 8. I like that you added the "Historic" title to the name of the venue. Classy. 9. Take care of your bartenders like I take care of mine (with fat tips!). They are grumpy, overworked, and hella great! They can make some mean cocktails and pour some heavy shots. I appreciate them and SO SHOULD YOU! 10. Listen to the patrons. You haven't pissed me off until you overcharged me, was rude to me, didn't respond to my emails/calls, and ran me off. I have money to spend and to drink. Scoot Inn boasts that it's a live music venue, but my favorite times to go are low-key weekday nights. On nights like these, they have tons of outdoor seating where you can hang with friends or play larger-than-life Jenga. Beer gets a bit cheaper, too. It's the perfect spot for groups! Inside is small and dark and really is only good to see a show. It's standing room only, but the acoustics are great and the bar is close by. Since they are a live music venue, they do shows well. They are frequently booking Austin musicians of all genres. On Friday you could see a country/folk band then Metal on Saturday. Their eclectic shows are as eclectic as the city they're in. read more

This sage advice was parceled out to me by a long time friend and Austin resident on his last day here. It gave me pause. It made me take a look at my beloved Austin. The City I live in. The City of Angels. Lonely as I am, together we cry. Oops. Wrong town. So, three of the last five nights, I've been invited to gatherings at Red's Scoot Inn. I've declined them all until last night. I walked in and was hit with just an overwhelming feel of authenticity. I mean, I guess most bars on a Monday night are that way. Only the hardcore. I met my party out back. Nice space. Good shade. A bar out back for crowded nights (the sign says cash only out back) So what kicked this up from a good place to a great one? Some of the best just random Monday night music I've seen. I mean, JT Van Zandt doing his father's If I Needed You just randomly. (one of my three all time favorite songs) Everyone around me kind of acted like it was just the sort of thing that happened often enough there to not really be extraordinary. Red Scoot may have just changed ownership, but it is one of the most special places to get a feel for Austin in case you forget. Staff here could not be nicer, and the mix of hipster and spanish-speaking neighbor is a warm one, as long as THE CRACKERS BEHAVE. Alcohol or non-alcohol this is a great place to hang out with your friends. I dropped by this place for the Vampire Weekend listening party. The door said 21 + over. You go in and its quite small. There's a small stage in the back. And there's only two skee ball machines which is way cool. On the side there's door that leads to their outdoor area. Their outdoor area has a lot of benches but there's only a few heat lamps. So I wouldn't recommend going outside for the coldest night in Austin. Definitely a great place to hang out! read more

There to see Lovely the Band...Hell Yeah! Great show! The sound was way better this show than the last show I saw at Scoot. Venue is nice and quaint. Wish they would have been serving there craft cocktails instead of the generic stuff you can get anywhere. Prices are inflated for blah drinks. That is my biggest complaint. Last night, a group of friends came for Evin Ivey's CD release and birthday bash. We have a special connection to Evin--her brother, John, coaches my son's lacrosse team. The place slowly filled up with Evin's friends, family and many others there for the strong drinks, cold beer, good music and moonbounce boxing! Memories of the Armadillo and Soap Creek Saloon filled my head. It seems the Scoot Inn typically features mostly indie bands and up and coming young artists. Evin Ivey is just that and more. Pitchers of beer continued to appear (way too much) on our table as we talked about lacrosse (way too much) and met Erin and John's family. The vibe here is casual and accepting of everyone--even lacrosse fans. The outdoor patio is huge and can accommodate lots of folks. Music is heard better out from under the covered section. Two highlights of the night other than Erin and John: I met Don P. and Jessica S., two very cool yelpers! And, moonbounce boxing! The foxy boxing turned out to be exceptionally entertaining. Ah the Scoot... one of the first bars I ventured to when I started my exploration of the oh-so-hip East Side. There are wonderful things about the ESiiiiide... the antiquated charm, the grandmother-esque wall paper, the small bathrooms with plumbing held together with prayers and duct tape. I needed a place to hold a party for 200 people... cheap. I immediately thought of my old fave. A little about me: I'm pretty normal corporate drone, i enjoy beers, interesting people and themed events. This means i dont have the gorgeous betty page-esque tattooed rockability sex appeal in a goodwill dress thing going on. Maybe if i had, then my experience booking a party with the Scoot would have been better. First, I talked to Jim, an owner. Really nice guy, seemed to know what was up. Then I talked to Rufus, booking guy, whom Jim apparently hadn't notified. Then after talking Rufus off the edge because "Jim always does this", we agreed on a date. Then I called Kevin, the other owner, and talked money. We agreed upon a very reasonable amount for the door and an _____ tab. Any phone call I made after that made me feel like I was bothering them... Maybe it was because they planned a MJ/Prince party the same night or they simply don't need the business but every phone call was a combination of terse yes, no, fines. Even if Jim was flaky about telling Rufus that we were planning on coming, at least my conversation with him was pleasant and he seemed interested in having our business. I still like the place... I appreciate them allowing us to wear crazy t shirts and take over the bar for the first part of the night and telling us when we were at various agreed upon limits. I guess I'm just a little disappointed that when bringing in what I thought was a significant amount of business to a favorite bar of mine, I felt strangely dismissed. Three additional things: a. I got there early, went to the bathroom and was so grossed out by the poo ring in the toilets that I felt compelled to use the conveniently provided scrub brush on the toilets to avoid my guests walking in and walking out . Also, the non locking right stall (swinging open at inconvenient times) and the half off toilet seat did not add to the appeal. 2. The lines for the bars were incredibly long. Those poor bartenders were sweating and running and trying desperately to service everyone! There's got to be a better way to deal with that... maybe build an extra bar. d4. Even after being repeatedly told that anyone with my party should be let in free, the door man (who i actually really liked) charged people with my party. read more

I dropped off a friend once after a night at Scoot Inn. It was the MJ/Prince mashup event, and we had been dancing. She was really concerned about the whole thing. Her: Woah. Sorry about your car. Me: It's cool. Her: I'm really gross. Really, really gross. Me: It's fine. I need a shower. Her: No, but I'm like... the epitome of nasty. Me: Girl. This is not the actual color of my shorts. They are a shade darker now: they're completely soaked through. Her: Oh, cool. Drinks were nicely priced, the bathroom was a little crazy that particular night, but the most important part was the music and having space to dance. I went in comfy shoes and felt sorry for those dressed up in heels; they just sunk into the dirt ground. It's not often I get a full-on cardio workout any old place in Austin. So thanks Scoot Inn. There I was just relaxing at home after a great run and workout on a tuesday night, when all of a sudden I get the call!! "Mr. Smidgens, we need your arm?". You see a friend of mine needed someone to help them complete their team for Skeeball at the Scoot Inn that night. Well boys and girls, Mr. Smidgens was just the man for the job! As I parked near by and strolled on in I was greeted by smiling faces and $2 beers! My kind of place. Mr. Smidgens was getting the eye from some ladies and my first thought was they are the other team we are playing. It turns out they just liked my green pants. As we rolled our way to a mediocre score due to some of my teammates we enjoyed our libations. The two ladies who were admiring my pants were close by and they looked really serious. I told them they were way to serious to be playing Skeeball. They laughed, but one of them thought I was hitting on her. Mr. Smidgens is just a friendly guy who likes everyone to have a good time. With that in mind I told her don't worry I have a girlfriend and she is hot. I proceeded to show her a picture. She frowned and apologized. Awkward? For her. I would like to tell you all that we won that night and that I was the saving grace. Unfortunately even the arm of Mr. Smidgens could not make up for the lack of skill of his team. Maybe next time. My folks used to come to Scoot before the scene-kid invasion, which kinda makes me feel sorry for them in a way that also makes me grin at the thought of their faces as the first wave Smiths tees started showing up with their fruit tattoos, fedoras, and Parliament Lights. Yes, in fact, this place is appealingly cross-generational. For the proprietors, I'm positively sure that they feel blessed with their recent transition from old-east-Austin to Grandfather of the East Side bars. Their gentrification and newly influx market of Lone Star drinkers and Spoon fans has made this place universally appealing -- even moreso than when it was a lazy beer garten far, far away. Its a fantastic place to see a show, with just the right angle for the optimal cone-of-viewing window and for the audience to spray out before the band in a radiating abundance of appreciation. Learn a thing or two, you La Zona fucks. Beers cheap, which means, the beers good. Gig inflation does not seem to occur here, for those of you who find information like that relevant to deciding whether or not to see a favorite band of yours. I wish they'd rip business away from the warehouse venues. read more

Scoot is one of my favorite bars in the neighborhood. It has quiet, 'just you and a few other neighbors' type nights, and it has loud, happy hipster event/party nights, and it has sit back and listen to music with a beer or friends nights. Once I saw an awesome pedal steel guitar player at Scoot and another time I saw a foot fetish band playing on the outside patio. My dad was visiting me that weekend. It was kind of awkward. But in any case, the place is pretty varied, which is cool. They even have a cat that hangs out and sits on peoples coats and stuff on the bar if you let it. Very unpretentious place 9 out 10 nights, which is why it's so cool, unlike Longbranch. Also the bartenders are great. And cute too. I don't like the cat though. read more

So last night the owner of this place asked Michael Cera and if we wanted to play some skee-ball. He said the machine was a buck and I put a dollar in the machine. The owner then proceeded to shove me out of the way to play skee-ball with some girl. With my money. I'll forgive them of serving good beer in plastic cups. the beer selection was decent, although the beer girl had to run outside to fill my cup... I can see the outdoor space will be great in warmer months (I know the heat is coming and will stay around too long). we caught a live band, the sound was good and the stage just the right height... they take their skee ball seriously. pics of various teams and tournaments were posted. this place has a simple formula that works. nothing unique or fancy, but simple and satisfying is enough to please. read more

I am in LOVE with the make-over! IDK when it happened, but I LOVE the big new fence, and the deck.. its it enormous and awesome. We went last week for the MapJam, and I hadn't been in well over a year. WHY, IDK, because this is exactly the type of venue that I absolutely adore. I can't speak for the drinks, or service, because I didn't drink. We were at an all ages show, and I had 2 17 year olds with me, but if I had them write this review, they'd be singing praises of Scoot for having an all ages show. I applaud them for allowing it, even though there was like 5 underage kids there-- it was perfect & appropriate. Can't wait to go back for my next show. read more

"Hipster Central" is what one pal termed it, and I couldn't initially disagree: Red's Scoot, an inner sanctum of slack recently purchased (and somewhat revitalized) by new owners (the Longbranch folks), is a pastiche of hip and lo-fi indie cool that merges on Austin's East side. The bar inside warm and antiquated, the back porch (yard, perhaps) a sprawl of carports (yes, carports), beer draws, tables and a homemade stage, Red's Scoot doesn't bother putting on. The bartender on my stop was plenty friendly, the band solid if largely ignored by the chill hangers inside, the vibe steady if trending unspectacular. A nice change o' pace. read more

After bemoaning the fact that most bars on the E Siiide are so effing hot, I settled in here and sucked it up and started sweating to the music. I love the feel of the place (only experienced the outdoor area) and the crowd seemed across the board laid back and there mostly to have fun (as opposed to the see and be seen places). Shorts and tees ruled the party, and flip flops as the terrain here can be rocky. The bartenders worked they asses off (how many times did I mutter, Aw, bless his heart! as they sweated thru there shirts and dealt with hundreds at a time). At one point, after waiting for about 30 minutes for the current to land me near the bar, I ordered a marg on the rocks. The bartender started making it in a mixer and then left for about 5 minutes (and this was peak drinking time), only to return with a lime that he cut in half and juiced for me in my glass. I woulda been happy with (and expected) tequila and sweet and sour. Even the girl behind me said "Ooooo, what'd you get? I want one...". Nice touch! But after a coupla drinks and several glasses of water, I knew it was time to go BEFORE I desperately had to pee and use the port-a-potties (hubby said it was NASTY). So, yes, very much a dive venue for real, but my spoiled self likes AC and decent restrooms (unless I'm roughing it at ACL). Will definitely go back in cooler temps or to check out the great indoors. read more

So i am not a frequent concert goer and I have only been here once. As far as small places go, this is definitly small. My family and I went to see the X Ambassadors the other night and this place wasn't at all what i thought it would of been. The concert was outside and the stage was quite small. The drink prices weren't too bad, and though, i didn't have any food. The ticket price was only $15.00 bucks and so at least I didn't pay for anything over the top. I wouldn't go here on the norm, unless i was seeing a concert again. Even then I would have to really love the band. I didnt' deal with anyone and so can't rate customer service.. But as far as no bells and whistles.. this would be that place. read more
