Great venue, good staff, touchy/weird management. Let me explain. Really just overall a fun music venue, I came here to support one of the local bands I knew some of the people in. Great spot for music, you get up close with the band in their performance, I would recommend however to have some ear buds as some of the space can get really loud. The one of the bartenders was kind enough to just let me have some of their ear buds and that made the night so much better. Since it is down East 6th, parking can be confusing. I talked with one of the staff and she was nice enough to provide some suggestions. Now the elephant in the room, as I was having a conversation with the staff member the supposed manager pushed my hands out of the way and said "Don't get too close". I admit I was close to the member due to the loud music, but I really was just trying to find directions. Felt kind of like an abuse of power, "I can do this because I'm the manager" sort of deal. Soiled a could've been great night, but the music and the staff besides that particular manager are nice. Hotel Vegas was a whole vibe! On Sundays, Hotel Vegas spins Latin tunes, which is one of my favorite genres of music. We were dancing cumbias and salsas amongst other dances. It was a very fun vibe. One person thought I was from the Dominican Republic, which I find quite hilarious being a native Texan. Perhaps I dance like a Latina. Smile. Hotel Vegas also were serving complimentary chips and street tacos. This certainly was a nice touch. This place is deceiving in space. There's a front portion of the place by another name. The back portion where the dancing was taking place was rather small. However, behind the dancing space, was a huge outdoor venue with a raised stage. Why have I never reviewed Hotel Vegas? Prior to relocating to Austin, we would visit family twice a year. This is one of the places we would always be sure to hit because they always have great live music, deejays, etc.. Some of my favorite bands have played here. Hotel Vegas gets insanely busy for shows and just generally. Why? Because the vibe is there. As I mentioned, the live music & other shows can't be beat. Staff are always friendly and helpful even during the busiest of times. Bonus: Marina Miracles (OMYum) now has a third location, a food truck at Vegas. Woo-Wee! read more

I've been here before for the free outdoor show plus a lone star celebration. The outdoor venue is definitely better but they never seem to put main shoes there. The drinks here are fine. This bar is in the nicer less crowded part of town. The indoor venue isn't bad. It can get loud in there being a smaller space. I do regert not bringing ear plugs. The photo booths in there don't have much of a warning and will snap your photos hella quick before you are ready. read more

They have a lot of music events at Hotel Vegas, so I find it's usually popping here, especially in their large outdoor patio area in the back. This most recent time I visited, I came with friends for a Harry Styles and Taylor Swift DJ night. I was not familiar with the music, but I could see my friends and everyone else having a great time with it. It was very hot and sweaty in the crowd, but they have some powerful outdoor misted fans blowing to the side where you can sit and chill. Pre-tax and tip, our friend group got a beer for $7, canned mojito for $12, and vodka cranberry for $9. The canned mojito seemed like a steep price for the size of the can. I saw they had some tasty-looking frozen drinks, but I decided to ask how much it was before getting it. Turns out it was $17. We were all shocked by this price. Something that haunts me is the bathroom situation here. When I came here over a year ago, I just remember being disgusted by seeing the indoor bathroom door open and there being a huge mound of toilet paper on the floor. Like, it was so high and spilling out of the open door. To my knowledge, they only have the one indoor restroom, then they have porta-potties outside in the back, which are also pretty smelly and not clean, but probably better than the scary indoor one. read more

We grabbed Lone Stars and Old Fashioneds at the bar (yes, they'll still make you a real drink if you ask nicely), then melted into the madness. One band was shredding psych-rock in the back, another was crashing through garage punk inside, and everyone was moving like the floor might give out--but in the best way possible. The bartenders? Absolute warriors. Holding down the bar in the middle of SXSW chaos and still managing to pour fast, stay cool, and even crack a joke. Legends. Hotel Vegas doesn't just host music--it lives it. It's where you go to feel Austin in your bones, to sweat through your shirt, lose your voice, and maybe catch the best set of your life from a band you'd never heard of before. If you're in town for SXSW and you don't spend at least one blurry, brilliant night at Hotel Vegas... did you even do SXSW right? Holy shit, I'm back on Yelp. This is indeed Michael David Smith otherwise not as MDS reviewing his first place I think about 15 years on Yelp. I started doing it back in my days Phoenix when it was kind of cool I guess it still is but whatever. But I'm starting off with a dreaded one star review for a very good reason. Hotel Vegas is one of the most important places to me and my friends that have been in Austin for a long time. I moved here about 15 years ago. I'm back recently. I went there for the first time a couple nights ago and had a good time. I showed up last night again and tried to buy a $10 drink, but it wasn't able to buy it because only had $24 approximately in my account. They authorize $25 no matter what you do with their toast system. So since I didn't have $25 I wasn't able to get the Drink and the $24 is still gone from my debit account. Similar situations have happened at some of my favorite places in Austin such as the yellow jacket and grackle. I don't know how to use the toast system correctly. I tried to explain this to the bartender who told me to leave the fact that they made a drink which steady cannot sell now I can't give her a tip and I'm not gonna come back until they fix their POS system because if your point of sales system does not work then your bar is a piece of shit read more

They were extremely rude because I asked if I could pay to get inside without waiting, and I had asked this in the most respectful way possible. Hotel Vegas has been an East 6th Street staple for awhile now, and it draws fairly consistent crowds for a variety of shows and events on a regular basis. Check their event calendar for more details. We've seen music shows ranging from post-punk to Latin jazz on their cozy indoor stage, and a wide variety of alt-rock on their outdoor stage. The indoor area is standing room only and the room is wide but not deep, so it feels pretty cramped in there when a band draws a crowd. The outdoor stage is huge and raised and has a large graveled yard area to stand and watch the band, and some table areas toward the back for sitting down to eat and chat with friends. I find the outdoor area much more appealing, but somehow they tend to prefer to set up shows indoors, even when they're popular and fans are crammed inside. Drinks include cans of beer and a typical full bar, and prices seem a bit high for Austin ($9 mixed or shots). Bartenders are friendly and efficient. There is usually a cover charge of at least $10, and they only take cash, so come prepared or you can use their ATM conveniently located just inside the front door. Parking is typical for downtown: find your own metered parking on the street. It can get really busy on weekends in this area, so rideshare is a good idea. There's also a train depot a couple of blocks away, if you happen to be able to take advantage of that. read more

I'm starting to realize I'm just not an Eastside girly, as Hotel Vegas is supposedly THE place to go for vibes... but every time I go, I just want to... go... somewhere else. Hotel Vegas is connected to Volstead, which is also connected together by a patio. There's always tons to see, but the music here is more indie. Also, don't bother requesting songs if there's a DJ, there's a "No requests from the DJ" policy here. Drinks are your average drinks at a bar, nothing that is crafted here. read more

The back patio area is the best spot here! There was never a line at the bar on Friday evening, the ambiance was great with a fun DJ playing out back, and the prices were decent for downtown. The drinks were strong too. They also have two separate inside areas. One had a cover fee with a band playing and the other side had a different DJ. It's very dark in both inside areas and very crowded. If not for the awesome patio area, I probably would not have enjoyed myself as much. I'm sure we'll be back. read more

I complained about the drink selection and maybe at the time they had a crap drink selection but now they have great frozen drinks and a good selections of beers. This place holds a variety of events and it's always different every time I come here. For sxsw there was a huge concert. Yesterday I went to a movie screening. A few months back it was just another bar. You never know what you're going to get but I enjoy how many sections it has so you can decide where you want to be depending on the type of vibe you're feeling. Always our first stop on the last SXSW Sat. Three bands playing the bars are not crowded and they are surprisingly giving you a strong pour and not trying to gouge you like other venues during SX. Hotel Vegas is a dive with wipe your shoes off bathrooms as you exit and the interior stage area does get crowded and loud which is AOK. We grabbed a few cocktails and headed to one of the outside stages where a high energy band from Berlin Germany were just kicking it. We stayed for a while to hear some head banging music then it was off to our next adventure. Let's see no cover, good music, cool venue, strong pours, great music. Here are your 5 stars! read more

Strictly a review for their new takeout window offering up their frozen margs in an adult-sized CapriSun bag for $9. I always attributed Volstead for having mastered the art of a really classic frozen marg, but looks like it was always Hotel Vegas behind the blender reins. While it may not keep its freeze as long in the plastic vessel, I'm definitely getting more bang for my buck than I did in the cup in the club! Being able to walk over with dog in tow, grab a pouch from the window, and go sit on a bench or a curb somewhere (yes, I said curb) to enjoy it outside of the confines of the house is a little glimmer of normal-ish almost summer life in Austin. You should pay the musicians you are about to see LIVE. Notice the grunginess and grime? Yeah this place used to be a brothel back in Austin's eastside back most recently in the early 90's - 2000's. Don't believe me? Look at the rooms atop of Hotel Vegas and Volstead. People live up there now but those rooms/spaces have some history, ya'll. There is a 60's decor thing going on in here. Check out the couches in the back room and the lanterns and wallpaper. You'll see what I mean. There is another bar outside peeps! If it gets crowded or hard to talk to the bartender inside just go outside. You got a stamp. You will be allowed back in. Turn left once you get to the patio and you should see the bar on the far left. Smoke outside. There is plenty of room and porta potties outside if you're not into the wait for 1 stall type of thing. Go back inside and see the bands that are killing in on the stage. It may be loud inside but what do you expect? It is a concrete room and that sound just bounces. Put some ear plus in your ear or pieces of TP so you don't ruin your hearing. Jam out and forget about the world. Hotel Vegas you be a little dirty but I am okay with it. You're always fun, exciting, supporting local music, and allowing me to hop back and forth to Volstead (dance club next door) on the occasion to get my booty dancing out of the way too. read more

I'm a regular at Hotel Vegas, The Hotel Vegas Concession Stand and The Volstead for the concession stand's food during happy hour 5-7 on weekdays. I've been here so often my phone now autocompletes "Sriracha Ranch Tots!" I always get the tots, despite being just one degree too spicy for my wimpy midwestern tastes. I also usually get the Matrix Burger, or the wings or salad, and sometimes the Cereal and Milk Shake. The salad is so much better than you'd expect from a cheap bar salad, especially with its fresh ranch dressing! The Matrix Burger is topped with plenty of pimento cheese and pickles, which gives it just the right amount of pizzazz above a basic cheeseburger. Lately just the patio is open. This was fine during the summer, and tonight I was pleased to discover heaters hidden by two tables by the bar. The only drawback is the bathroom situation. Not a drinker so I can't review those. I have good memories of catching some shows here a few years back, before lockdown. I've left most of my reviews on the Hotel Vegas Concession Stand page, but I should fill in everyone looking at each page of these connected businesses. If you have ever been curious about what dry rot looks like, Some of the ceilings offer a classic display. As a South by Southwest venue - it is one of the most crowded, with chaotic entrance procedures and cram-packed rooms. But when ninety million people are jammed into a room the size of two school buses And the excitement is building for a band that everyone knows is going to be excellent. I forgot that in Austin everything is a dive bar and wow even when AC is a must, there's no AC. That being said, the cumbia night was amazing. The dance floor in the no-AC-only-fans front room was just crowded enough with room to spare for spins (there was an $8 cover). I just stayed by the fans between songs and poured ice down my chest so there you go, take that Austin summer night. Some dope hip hop playing in the back patio, and the dancing was fantastic. Still, a dive bar is a dive bar. Bathrooms are not great, but at least there is toilet paper? There are pool tables, photo booths, and shots shots shots shots. Diverse, super fun crowd. You don't enter from 6th street as it is only used for people to leave. Bouncers will direct you to the side. It looks small from the outside, but then you realize the backyard is incredibly large. Inside is the small dance floor with okay music, not sure how I would describe the music on a Saturday night. Restrooms are also in there and it's incredibly small where there is always a wait. It's incredibly awkward because it is so close to the dance floor. Fortunately (at least for guys), there are porta potties outside. Outside there are two bar areas from what I remembered. Music is way different from inside. It's your typical open yard space where you drink and chat with friends. There is a food truck inside if you're hungry. read more

I've been to hotel Vegas a handful of times for concerts or sxsw. I enjoy the outdoor stage more than the indoor set up, personally. I also like the vibes outside more, and the food truck is pretty good. The Sriracha tots didn't taste like they had sriracha in them though? It can also we a little confusing which bars are for hotel vegas and which are for volstead, since they're connected. read more

Came here for a Selena tribute band and it was so fun! A few hours before the band came on they had a cumbia dance lesson. It was pretty packed so it got real hot real quick. I had a blast even if I was sweaty. I love that it has a huge back patio that connects to Volsted. Both of these bars are super fun and probably my favorite in east Austin. The Selena band was amazing! We only stayed for a few songs because it was just too hot. We left next door to volsted since they had a little more air circulation and the music was top notch hip hop! Their margaritas in the back patio were super yummy. The only downside of Hotel Vegas the bathrooms were flooded and the water seeped out onto the dance floor. If you are looking for a good punk rock show then this is the place! Everything here will fit that image too. I will be honest the inside is always hot and a little smelly, but everyone is always having a blast here too. I would recommend getting a beer not a mixed drink. I feel like that is just what you are supposed to do at a place like this. My favorite thing about Hotel Vegas is the back patio area. I love how it connects to the Volstead. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night the patio will be packed full of all kinds of punk rockers, hipster kids and local Austinites. July 6th 2019 Not impressed. My friend and I went and had the worst drinks ever . I had the paloma , it tasted like dirty dish water. The starry eyes my friend ordered tasted so flat and awful. It's like the mixer was expired or something. I have to say the staff is really nice and attentive but the drinks sucked. As far as the music. .Our group of 4 paid seven dollars each. We arrived at 9 PM. The posted time was 9 PM for the band but The opener didn't play I till 1130pm. The opener from Boston eventually played and they were so lame. They were off key and had the personality of a paper bag. Sorry I'm just being real. They were a wannabe weak version of a Kaiser Chief cover band. Hotel Vegas cant help if the band has no talent but the schedule was chaos. We ended up leaving at midnight without hearing the band we came to see, The Smith cover band. We are all so disappointed. We dont know who that band was but it was terrible. It just sucked how we showed at 9pm, the opener played one song and stopped until 1130pm. We were waiting and drinking awful drinks and ended up leaving. read more

Whoa, the vitriol: I've been in Hotel Vegas a few times now (the sister room to Volstead), and while I can totally see how some folks might not love it (it is scrubby, dingy, and on my most recent stop there, terribly wet outside), I've caught a few solid bands there (as opposed to gaseous, I guess) and had a perfectly easy time doing it on a few occasions. I'd probably recommend getting by on a night when they're not packed (it's not a big room inside, so if going elbow to elbow isn't your bag you may not dig it), but when you catch an act that's really killing it onstage, this is arguably the most intimate viewing experience in the city, and a decent place to catch a band on the rise. As someone who just moved to Austin 6 months ago, I'm still considered as someone new to the scene, and rightfully so. I found Hotel Vegas back in January when looking for live music to see. (Noob. I know. Thank you to Showlist Austin. Lol.) With that being said, I found The Sour Notes on their website and immediately felt connected to the name. I mean.. C'mon. When I found my way to the hole in the wall entrance, which reminded me of Deep Ellum in my hometown of Dallas, I couldn't help but reminisce of dirty, drunken nights after shows on Elm Street. With the grunge raging in my blood, I powered through the door man to an empty room with a beautiful stage. It reminded me of something that Rock N' Roll originated from. I kept my thoughts intact and basically ran to the bar, which is a mere 20 feet from the front entrance. I didn't even ask for their specials for the night, (considered a greedy move, but appreciated in the industry), I ordered a Lonestar and shot of well whiskey. Grungy. I know. Best $6 dollars I've ever spent. $8 including tip. Be considerate people. So as a newbie, not yet considered an Austinite. I can proudly say, that throughout this review. I have gradually become more drunk. $30 down the hole, I'm well spent and have seen some of the best Rock in my life. I highly recommend this place on a Monday and most definitely on a Friday or Saturday. I hope I've earned my respect. Peace. read more
