Came here again on Labor Day weekend for the second year in a row. The folks who run the shop are super friendly and helpful. The three-wheel scooters were pricier than I remember from last year ($51/hour), but it was fun. They give you a map and highlight the route you take. Make sure to stop somewhere along Ocean Drive for great photos. The drive itself should be about 35-45 minutes depending how slow you go, but with the 20 or so mins along the water, that should be enough time. read more

I have lived in Newport 24 years, and have made fun of the scoot coups since the day they first came here. As a local, they are annoying, silly looking, and dangerous. For some reason this summer, I really wanted to try one. I had 4 weekends of visitors, and worked very hard to convince all of them to take a scoot coup for a ride with me. Finally, my last visitor of the summer asked if we could do one... I was never happier! They make it real easy, too easy. Scarily easy. We walked down, gave our ID's, got helmets (only required for passenger), and were given a scoot coup. The workers were all friendly, accommodating, and helpful. We were taken back since there was no test drive, no direction on buttons besides start, stop and blinker... we were petrified to head out on the town. How Beth tested me driving, I will never know. All in all, for $50 and 1 hour, we had the time of our lives. It is totally worth it! Our scoot coup gave us a lifetime of memories, laughs and smiles :). Oh, and our flag on the back was awesome. When we first moved to Newport, I was intrigued by these little three wheeled scooters and I had been dying to get my little butt into one of them! Finally, I dragged my husband to do it with me! The people who work here are nice and ready to help. They give you a quick run through of the rules and how to work the scooter. They are not overbearing and they seem to just want you to have a good time. The scooter we got had a broken speedometer so that was a little nerve racking. Bumps are painful, but on some roads, you really cannot avoid them! We drove up on Ocean Drive and then Fort Adams and by that time, I was done. It's fun, but I was constantly worried about other cars not seeing us and tourists drive like morons, so I was on high alert almost the whole time. It's $50 dollars for the first hour and then $35 each additional hour after that, but one hour was plenty enough, even with all the Newport tourist traffic. read more

Walked inside with two of my college age best friends and we were instantly profiled as incompetent and stupid young girls. Service was rude, time consuming and made us feel like trash! One they got copies of all of our information and ID's they started with the road lessons for the Yamaha scooters we were renting. I wasn't even allowed to drive because of my height (besides the fact the owner was a male, barely any taller than me.) We went back and forth in the parking lot while we dealt with the employee's unpleasant attitudes. They had no confidence in us which made us nervous! As soon as we went to leave, we got maybe five feet before they told us we weren't allowed to take the scooters out. They were more afraid of their scooters getting wrecked than our own safety... Had that been so they would have kept us back for more training instead of pulling the scooter's away from us!!! Despite all having experience with scooters, and having gone through the long process of giving them our information- they wasted our time by not giving us a chance. Immediately I went back and had them shred our information, walked out and up the street to the next rental place where we were treated MUCH better and had a blast with a two hour rental of the same price!!! Avoid Scooter World at all costs if you're not looking to deal with rude employees and a business owner who doesn't care for their customers- and a time consuming hassle of a rental service who profiles by looks and not knowledge or experience. (We went to Mansion Rentals and had the best experience. The guy there even told us how impressed he was by how good we were compared to the other older males he rents to!) read more

Really obnoxious service. Thinks he is doing a favor renting out his scooter! The scooter coupe's are a lot of fun but not well maintained. One of the scooters in our big group that we took out stopped in the middle. We initially thought that it had run out of fuel (the gauge was broken). When we called the office and they said that this happens often and try to restart after 10 minutes. That did work but they refused to give us the time lost sitting by the roadside in the broken coupe! read more

My husband and I rented a convertable Mini Cooper for 4 hours. I believe it was $175 which wasn't bad. The staff was super helpful and laid back. Very informative. we had a great time driving around Newport. Overall great experience. We will be back again to try the 3 wheeled cart things when we have our kids with us. I wanted to rent one this time but I didn't want to have to wear a helmet. I think its crazy the driver doesn't have to wear a helmet but the passenger does. We had an amazing time - got mini trained, then had an AMAZING time, zipping about. We had a bit of trouble parking the bike and a really nice guy helped us - Mike saved our bacon when we thought our battery was dead - they charged us 1 hour for 3 hours, so yeah, it was awesome!! read more

We came labor day weekend from boston and asked about how to rent a scooter and for an overview of the rental process and one of the representatives was unbelievably rude. We personally enjoyed this experience - We had never used a scooter before but it was a lot of fun. It is a nice way to see Newport ( especially Ocean Drive ) We recommend! The only issue we had is that when we were signalling the blinker would not shut off and just kept beeping and beeping... and beeping for a good ten minutes. We did follow the instructions provided to turn it off but it was not working. I think had something wrong with it which should be checked out since to other motorists it appeared we were going right incorrectly. read more

We rented two scooters and a three wheeler. They were so safety conscious and nice. Yes there will be a line, and you must stay 6 feet apart, but there is some paperwork that has to be completed. They make the forms easy to fill out and understand. Once you select your "ride" you are given great instructions and safety tips. Again safety is their top priority. They even provide helmets. Remember to bring eye protection because it is a must. Prices are fantastic. But most of all the staff is wonderful, professional, caring and kind! Any skill set can find something to ride read more

Three friends and I rented, or attempted to rent, some scooters from here this summer. In order to rent, you have to demonstrate that you can start the scooter, ride it 5 feet, and brake. There were two younger employees going through the test with three of us to start. We each did it quickly, and got the OK. Then, our last friend stepped up to do it, and out of nowhere, an older, middle aged white male employee with some distinctive features materialized from where he was apparently watching the whole time by the store entrance. Now, at this point I'm going to note that myself and the first two friends are white, and this last friend is not. Whether or not that played in to why he felt it necessary to personally "test" our non-white friend, is not a certainty, and the way he was treated was atrocious regardless, but we all left feeling like it was very likely motivated in part by this. So this older, middle aged white male employee with some distinctive features walks up with a really abrasive tone. My friend steps on the scooter, and the guy is basically shouting the instructions in his face. My friend goes to turn it on, and apparently wasn't doing it right, so the employee slapped his hand away from the ignition area and said "What did I just tell you?!" This is phrase he would repeat several times during what was supposed to be his instructing our friend how to ride. When my friend rode forward a few feet and stopped, in a way that was virtually identical to how we had all done it, he erupted with "Nope! I can't let you ride this. It's not safe." Keep in mind, this is a SCOOTER! They were renting the same ones to a geriatric white couple a few minutes before. They are not difficult to ride. And keep in mind the first three of us passed this "test" in under 15 seconds each. If this man still works there, I think he should be fired for this treatment. If you happen to go there and he treats you the same way, please report him to any upper level staff you can find, which I attempted to do but could not find any. read more

I heard about the possibility of scooter-ing in Newport and became obsessed with the idea. My boyfriend and I finally made the trip on a gorgeous Monday afternoon. We were originally going to Scooter Inc down the street but they were closed (?!). Scooter World saved the day! Since my boyfriend had absolutely zero confidence in my ability to ride a scooter, we opted for the 3-wheelers, which are a lot easier to ride. I thought I was too cool for the goofy lookin' thing at first, but man, it ended up being the COOLEST EVER. We rode around Ocean Ave and Bellevue Ave and enjoyed the amazing views by the water (and the mansions). Everyone LOVED us and I did not see a single person we passed who wasn't smiling at us from ear-to-ear :) If you're ever out in Newport and looking for something fun to do, I'd definitely recommend scooter rentals! Note: 3-wheelers were $50 for the first hour, $30 for each additional hour. I believe the regular 2-wheel scooters are $30 for the first hour. read more

OMG...this was so much fun!!! I would have given 5 stars if our 3-wheel scooter was in better safety condition. The speedometer didn't work and my seat belt was broken. Thankfully, my son's seat belt was still working...even though it had no adjustment, so I tightened it and tied it in a knot. My husband followed us in his car and we had a blast! I would imagine its hard to keep up the maintenance on these vehicles, people are driving them constantly. I've never driven a scooter before and picked it up quickly. At one point, we pulled into a parking lot and I realized these things don't have reverse, so I had to get out and push it backwards, pretty easy...no big deal. We drove down Ocean Drive and up to the mansions on Bellevue Avenue. For a 3-wheel scooter, you'll need a credit card (400.00 security deposit) and the rental cost is $50 for the first hour, $35 additional. The staff is friendly & helpful. These days it seems almost all of the news is bad, but I recently had an experience that renewed my faith in people - ordinary people. I recently joined my son in Providence during parents weekend at Johnson & Wales. We took a day trip to Newport and rented scooters from Scooter World. We toured around the island and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Later in the evening I realized that I had lost my diamond bracelet. After searching frantically for hours I sat, crestfallen at this bad fortune. The following day I called Scooter World and spoke with Robert Bidlack, the owner. With no hesitation Mr. Bidlack reported that Dylan and Nate - both college students working for Scooter World -- found my bracelet. Dylan and Nate, and Scooter World, have renewed my faith in people. Spent 4 days in Newport and enjoyed a 2 hour scooter adventure with a couple ladies. The guys were wonderful, patient and fun. A full map of sights to see with directions to get around the beautiful island! Winston helped with most of the plans and the quick lesson and we were on our way! I have been a returning customer for 3 years and each time I come I have had a bad experience.The owner is very unfriendly and does not care about his customers. I will for sure be taking my business elsewhere next time I return to Newport. The scoot-coupes and scooters are not well-maintained. They have tears in the seats and they put a smiley face sticker over the gas gauge because it does not work. The turning signal on the rear of one of the scooters was falling off. Also, the turning signal on my scoot-coupe was stuck on for most of my ride because it was broken. They profiled myself and my mother because we were women when we wanted to rent the scooters. They give you about 10 feet to balance and adjust yourself while riding and if you can't do it, they won't let you out, even if you have previous riding experience. They treated my brother and my dad just fine when they had a little bit of trouble, but refused to let me rent a scooter. To finish it off, on the day we went this year there was a lot of traffic in Newport. We were stuck in a line of traffic for 45-50 minutes in front of Brenton Point State Park and were about 25 minutes late back to Scooter World because of this. They made us pay for the extra hour and then the owner made sure to yell throughout the whole office to the other customers how "everyone needs to watch the clock" when they're riding. If you want to be treated fairly, I suggest you rent elsewhere. read more

And if you call ahead for information on what to prepare for, you will not,repeat not get the pertinent information you really need. Case in point, I arrived after calling two times with questions to arrive, fill out forms, leave deposit, pick out our helmet THEN in a rude manner asked . Did I get measured?!?! My niece, nephew, and I went to Newport and rented the Yamaha Zuma and the Scoot Coupe. My nephew was asked if he had former experience, to which he had and was then asked to drive the Yamaha Zuma to prove and test his balance and ability. He passed the test he was given with no issues. After driving for a mile or so, he drove over a man hole cover on a turn and wiped out. We went back to Scooter World and told them what had happened and right off the bat the owners cared more about the bike then the well being of my nephew. Upon seeing the scene of the accident the owner claimed it was un-driveable without even trying to start the bike. Upon getting back to the store, we were charged $2000 for the repairs on the bike. We were not given written documentation of the damages, just charged for the repairs. Obviously we refused the charges, to which the management responded with an aggressive and condescending demeanor. They even went as far as to give me a step stool to sit on when I told them I would sit and wait all day because I was not going to pay the charges. Upon sitting in the chair, the owner blatantly stated "Surprised you fit in it." They tried several times to charge my card for various random amounts until they settled on $2135.00. The business practices of this company are shady at best, if not outright illegal. Their customer service skills leave much to be desired. They are more concerned about the bottom line rather than the safety of their customers, Not worth your time or money. read more

Rented 2 coupe scooters with my sister, niece and nephew. The workers who helped us initially were very professional and nice. But, upon check-out the guy was so unbelievable rude. He was condescending and acted like he was doing us a favor by taking our money. This is a stressful time, for everyone, due to Covid. He spoke to me like a 2 year old when I placed my helmet on top of the counter, instead of under it. I didn't know where to put it. Then spoke to my niece like a jerk because she walked up behind me without a mask on...we were outside and she was far behind me. I told her to go wait by the car and he continued to moan an groan about her not wearing a mask. I said to him "thats why I told her to go stand by the car". He just kept on about the mask in a completely unreasonable way. He said "Im just trying to run a business here" and I replied with "Im just trying to give you my business". I have never encountered such a rude and unprofessional man in my life. I thought maybe I was interpreting him wrong until I read the other reviews. I would find another place to rent scooters in the future. I heard Mansion Scooters was much better with better equipment, so try them if you are in the Newport area. read more

We put the rudeness aside, hoping to enjoy an experience we thought would be good.... instead we continued to get terrible service from the employees that were working. They had no knowledge in what they were doing. After asking to split the amount half on a card and half in cash the girl said she could do it, as there was a certain amount on the card that could be used. She then proceeded to say "I accidentally charged it all on the card oops" "is that ok". No it is not okay if you couldn't do it she shouldn't have said she could have as it lead to an overdraft on the card. With all of this trouble the girls were completely unprofessional and rude as the other customers around us were having issues and getting irritated as well. My girlfriend rented a slingshot for me for my birthday. I have 20 years experience driving a manual shift from a '83 Ford Ranger to a '12 mustang and even a Harley Davidson. The slingshot appears a bit beat up and in need of maintenance from scratches all over the fender to the clutch not catching. I had to drive uphill and try to merge into traffic which was difficult due to high traffic and pedestrians, also when I let off the clutch and gave it some gave the slingshot proceeded to roll backwards downhill. I then slowly pressed on the pedal more to so that the vehicle would then move uphill. After a couple attempts to safely merge into traffic I was approached by a very rude young man who reached over and grabbed the wheel and said "you are done" and proceeded to jerk the parking brake.. he then tried to inform me that I was revving the engine to which I replied that I wasn't revving the engine and that I was trying to merge safely while not rolling backwards. Maybe if the kept up with the upkeep of their rentals issues like this would not occur read more

Customer service was excellent via phone and email multiple times prior to our upcoming week in Newport. I inquired about renting kayaks(4 kayaks) for the first time and also first time w our 73lb golden retriever. Prior to our arrival, I made it very clear that it was our first time and was told that it was fine and dogs are welcome. Upon arrival, the three employees hanging in front of the store front did not greet us as we entered the store. One came in after us and told us it was a ten minute walk to the dock where we would leave from. More like 20mins but a nice walk. The kayak experience was awful! The employees hanging out at the dock eating snacks did not greet us. I think we disturbed their time. I introduced myself. They gave us waivers to complete while they put the kayaks in the water. Without ANY instruction, they told us to lower ourselves from the dock down below to the water with the dog (they had zero suggestions regarding the dog. "I don't have a dog so I don't know what to tell you) Within ten minutes, we were flipped over and in the water. The dock was in the marina surrounded by many boats and adjacent to a yacht club. The owner of the yacht club came out and helped us and the dog out of the water and helped us get the kayak out of the water as it was filled with water. He told us that the plugs inside the kayak should have been covered. He also told us that the bay is not a safe place for beginners, especially w a dog. He said the winds were too high that day and the water was too difficult. He told us that Scooter World should have told us all this but it was typical of them to only want to take our money. A woman from the yacht club offered to complain on our behalf and suggested getting our money back. Scooter World would not refund us. They said they could not because the owner would not allow it. They said once the kayak touches the water, you've paid for it. He even told us that earlier that day, a woman rented a $165 jet ski but became too afraid but he had to charge her full price! They probably didn't give her any instruction either! Upon arrival at home, my husband talked to a professional kayaker about our experience. He was told that a beginner should always start by walking into the water to get in a kayak; never lower yourself into one unless you have had some experience. He said a bay is not a smart place but a lake that doesn't have boats and yachts coming and going. So, I tried in again at home in the state park lake. Totally different experience with complete instruction including going over the kayak itself, the paddle and paddling techniques as well. SO, beware if you are considering Scooter World. I totally can relate to the other Yelper's bad experience renting scooters from them! read more
