After a friend had the procedure and raved about I decided to look into it a bit further. I scheduled my evaluation with Dr Hyver's office and was quickly seen. I have an astigmatism in both eyes so was curious to see what could be done. I didn't qualify for lasik but I could get PRK which is just a longer recovery time. I was a bit concerned about that since I commute on a motorcycle daily and didn't want to miss much work. I was thrilled to learn I could split my pre-op and my surgery between December and January. This allowed me to take advantage of the funds left in my flexible spending account for 2014 and arrange to have the remainder allocated from my 2015 FSA. It really was a nice treat for myself and I couldn't be happier. The first few days after surgery there was some pain and discomfort but it was manageable. My left eye felt like someone just had their finger pressed against my eye. The second day I was extremely light sensitive. Even the TV was too bright with sunglasses on. I gradually got better and found I could ride my motorcycle after a few days. Things were pretty blurry but I did a lot of research beforehand and knew that was too be expected. It was weird at first when things were blurry and your glasses do nothing to fix it. I was pretty light sensitive for about two weeks. I never felt that I was in a great deal of pain. It was all manageable. I followed the instructions with everything they gave me. Drops every 4 hours. Vitamin C every day. It was able to increase my font size and adjust my screen resolution allowing me to do my job. It was exciting to see improvements in my vision every so often. Eventually I felt I was seeing really good and no longer found myself squinting. I occasionally found that certain things took a bit longer to focus on, like prices in a grocery store. But even that got better. I'm thrilled to say after my latest appointment I'm seeing 20/15 in my left eye and 20/20 in my right. This has truly exceeded my expectations. I still wake up at times and want to reach for my glasses but after a second I realize I no longer need them. LASIK was something I had wanted since I found I need glasses over decade ago, but knowing the risks, and the complications people have had in the past, I never really considered it and thus never researched it. Plus, as my optometrist pointed out, I would need to wait until my eyes finished growing/changing to really be LASIK-ready. At the end of 2020, my eyes had been the same prescription for 2-3 years, and my optometrist brought up that it'd be a good time if I was interested still in getting LASIK (I had mentioned it before), and that he thinks with my cornea and eye flexibility that I would be a great candidate. And it got me thinking... 2020... I'm working from home anyways so I don't have to worry about not being able to drive into work, etc... I had been wearing contacts for the better part of the last 15 years, and was quite frankly getting tired of it. So I googled and after reading tons of articles on the possible outcomes, and what to expect, I found found Dr. Hyver. I used their website to make an consult appointment, and got an email back within a few hours saying they had an appointment in 2 weeks, and I took it. CONSULT (~1 hour) Consult was great. It took about an hour and the optometrist (Dr. Quan) was very thorough. After doing several tests, Dr. Quan recommended that I get PRK rather than LASIK due to my cornea being on the thinner side for how my prescription was. I wasn't thrilled about the longer recovery time with PRK but luckily with COVID my boss was flexible about possibly needing time off. After the consult with Dr. Quan, I was sat in a different room with some papers to read, and then got to teleconference with Dr. Hyver. Both Dr. Quan and Dr. Hyver were both very open to answering my questions and making sure that I was making the right choice and comfortable with that decision. Done deal, I scheduled my pre-op, and surgery days. PRE-OP (~1 hour) Pre-op exam was great. It was like a visit to your optometrist where I go through some tests, look at what the best prescription is for my eyes, and then the doctor went over my prescriptions and eye care for pre and post op. My eyes were be dilated, so I did make sure I had a ride after. PRK PROCEDURE DAY(~35-45 minutes; but recommend 1 hour) Operation day I was very jittery (with excitement, plus it was New Year's Eve). When I got to the office with all my prescriptions, and they made sure I had everything I would need and gave me a little bag that will have a few other essentials (eye ointment, eye shield, and comfort drops). The rest of the time in the office flew by. A series of eye drops in the eye, a quick rundown of what to expect during the procedure and a short wait to let the drops kick in, I was into the exam room. I wish my eyes were good enough without correction that I could see what the room and equipment was like, but my prescription was pretty strong, so everything was a blur (literally). I laid on the bed and Dr. Hyver walked me through everything he was doing and what I needed to do. Both eyes were done so quickly, and immediately afterwards I was able to see better already (be warned, that doesn't last through the next few days). I sat up from the bed, and I could see Dr. Hyver's face which was awesome. First night was not bad! It felt a little weird, but I could overall see! Little itches here and there, but doable. POST-OP 1 (10-15 minutes) Just a super quick check up to see how you're doing. Really easy peasy. DAY 2-3 I knew it was coming so I wasn't surprised. I had prepped a full day of audiobooks just for this. But boy oh boy, you don't even want to open your eyes can it is uncomfortable. And I do mean uncomfortable and not painful. It doesn't hurt, but it's not pleasant. It will sting, and itch, and if you can't bear it you can use the comfort drops, but I just stuck through it, kept my eyes closed and listened to 3 books through these two days. You can do it! I also remember the office calling to check up on how I was doing which was nice. Once you get through this, it's smoother sailing. POST-OP 2 (I can't remember how long, but it was pretty short...) Another quick check to see how your eyes are healing. I'm now 4 months post-op, and I can say my eyes are fantastic. I still have the occasional dry eyes, so I keep artificial tears on hand (maybe once every 2-3 days I'll use one), and I still use the ointment maybe once every 2 weeks because of a bit of dryness. PRK heal time is about 6 months, but I can't see my vision improving to better than it is (optometrist confirmed 20/20 at my POST-OP 3). It was a fantastic experience, and I am very, very happy that I went through with it in the end. Scott Hyver may be on the more expensive end, but if you think about it: THESE ARE YOUR EYES. I'm so happy with the results of my Lasik! Rather than having a -6.5 prescription in each eye (for the past 20 years!), I can now see 15/20!! My regular eye-doctor told me that I was only a candidate for PRK (after only examining my eyes for 15 minutes). After a 30-minute examination and 10-minute consultation with Dr. Hyver himself, they told me that I could do Lasik after all! The whole process was very easy and thorough - I went back for multiple 15-minute appointments just to make sure my prescription was correct after I stopped using contact lenses. I just had my post-op appointment today with my eye doctor, and I'm happy to report that I have perfect vision! My LASIK story is a bit unique, in that I had my right eye (-2.5) done about a month ago, and my left eye (-0.5) done yesterday. During my consultation with Dr. Hyver, he suggested just trying the right eye since I might be able to get by OK with the small nearsightedness in my left eye. I really appreciated his suggestion - since it would save me a pretty penny - but in the end I opted for both eyes since I was having trouble focusing up close. I think the fact that he suggested this, rather than taking my money, really shows that he has your best interests in mind. Dr. Hyver's office is a well-oiled machine. Everything is so organized and clean. They even scheduled my 1 day post-op appointment for me with my regular eye doctor. The consultation testing is extremely thorough, and is good for a year. The actual surgery is quick and painless, though it is very strange, like being probed by aliens under bright lights. The most uncomfortable part in my opinion are the clasps that hold your eyelids back. The few hours afterward are the worst, but it gets progressively better by the hour. I have had very few side effects after almost a month of getting the surgery in my right eye, though everyone is different. I would definitely recommend going to Dr. Hyver if you are considering LASIK, but also make sure you get a second opinion. This is an invasive surgery and should not be taken lightly. I had PRK done over a year ago and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. After wearing contacts for 10+ years, my eyes had had enough and I could barely last a day keeping them on. I knew it was time to look into laser options and went in for my consultation. I met with Dr. Hyver, who explained why he didn't recommend Lasik for me. I had no idea what PRK was and was hoping to do Lasik, but I trusted Dr. Hyver's judgment (and he is the 49ers' official eye doctor after all). I proceeded with scheduling my procedure, but I was a busy grad student who worked full-time so I ended up having to postpone my surgery almost a year later. Despite all that, every interaction with the staff was professional and personable, and they were responsive via e-mail which was convenient and made me feel taken care of. The surgery itself went smoothly, and I didn't take ANY pain meds during my recovery. Today I have 20/20 vision and you can't put a price on that, especially if you consider how nearsighted I was. It's a game changer to be able to wake up and not have to reach for glasses and/or put on contacts! You can believe the reviews. Dr. Hyver really is great. Highlights: 1) He's honest and down-to-earth. Dr. Hyver will tell you how it is, and even if you really want LASIK but should have PRK, will only give you PRK. 2) The OR is very clean. You have to wear a hair-net and shoe booties, and visitors are not allowed to walk inside (just look inside) - not true of all surgeons I visited. 3) His process is solid. From the way that you are treated from the first phone call, to each consultation, he has an organized operation set up. There's no confusion, everyone knows what to do, and it's a very calm and organized experience. I have mixed feelings about the plethora of radio ads and the heavy 49ers branding. But, it was definitely a great experience, and if you decide that laser eye surgery is for you, Dr. Hyver is the place to go. Phone Consultation: I spoke with Patricia O who was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about lasik and PRK. I had spoken to representatives from other offices (LaserVue, Pacific Vision Institute, and Furlong) and Patricia of ScottHyver provided me with the most extensive overview of the entire Lasik process. Since I work with a very small (but nimble!) team in my company, the most pressing concern was knowing which days to take off. Patricia and I worked out a timeline for the consultation, dilation, procedure, and follow up appointments so I had ample time to request PTO and prepare. In-person consultation: I walked into the appointment knowing that I did not qualify for Lasik and only qualified for PRK (the alternative vision correction procedure for people with thin corneas). I felt instantly welcomed the moment I stepped in the office - the staff was friendly and everyone I interacted with introduced themselves. The nurse walked me through all these tests before I saw down with one the doctors: Outcome: The doctor told me that I was not eligible for PRK nor Lasik. We reviewed the test results together and compared my eye structure to eye structures of people who were eligible. The doctor did a thorough job at telling me why I was not eligible. Needless to say I was disappointed at the outcome, especially having already set aside some serious use-it-or-lose-it FSA money for the procedure. I had PRK surgery with Dr. Hyver last year and I am extremely pleased with the results. During the LASIK consultation, he told me that due to my retina thickness, he recommended PRK surgery. Definitely research the PRK procedure as it has a much longer recovery time than LASIK, which required a lot of patience but logistically worked just fine for me at the time. Loving my new vision! I've been wanting to get LASIK for a few years now and finally decided to take the leap. I decided to visit Scott Hyver after extensive research, mainly on Yelp. You Yelpers are almost always dead on with your reviews. And after doing my Yelp research, I truly thought this place would be the no brainer place to get my laser eye surgery. Well unfortunately, this is the one time I am going to have to disagree with the general public. Not necessarily because of Dr. Hyver,but because of my overall experience. The office was very nice and clean on the day of my consultation and I did not have to wait long for the technician to greet me. Can't remember his name but he was nice and friendly. After about 20 min. of tests, I was ready to see Dr. Hyver. I will say that I thought the tests were on the light side (no dilation of the eyes, reading tests etc.) as the other places I tried. Dr. Hyver's personality was as everyone mentioned, quiet and to the point. Nobody I would hang out with, but seems like a nice enough guy. Dr. Hyver said that I am a candidate but wanted me to come back in a couple of weeks for a follow-up visit. So far so good, I'm feeling good about getting my surgery here. Dr Hyver immediately referred me to the patient consultant for pricing and appointment information. Can't remember her name but I had to wait a in this little hallway for a few minutes before she was available. She finally called me and I could tell immediately that she did not want to be working there. Now, I don't expect you to treat me like a king but a little fake happiness would be nice. She was sighing a lot and almost forgot a prescription that Dr. Hyver had prescribed me. She was so ready to get me out that instead of waiting for the computer to print out my quote (it was taking a tad longer) she just wrote the quote for the laser eye surgery on a little post it and told me that they would honor that note. And of course, there was no time for questions. Despite the bad experience I had, I was still considering having my procedure done there due to the outstanding Yelp reviews. I finally decided on another place because although I'm sure Dr Hyver is a fine doctor, having laser eye surgery is a big event in my life. I'm going to have enough stress and anxiety by having my eyes zapped. I don't need any additional stress by having a bad experience with the staff, especially at almost $5k. ORIGINAL review: April 2007 My appointment with Dr. Hyver was made in the summer of 2006, and the day had finally come - almost nine months later. Wavefront custom LASIK - *insert dundundun sound from horror movies* They changed the surgery date on me once, and I didn't find out about it until just a month before the surgery. Almost had to move the date completely since I'd have to rearrange my work schedule. I'd have appreciated being notified sooner. I was pretty nervous, and I don't think waiting around in their office really helped much. I arrived a little early, underwent a bunch of tests, and then had the surgery. When I first got there, the waiting room was packed, and there were very few open seats. By the time I got out of there, I was the second-to-last person out. They do warn you ahead of time that the entire process would last around two hours... So getting there early didn't really help. They could tell I was nervous too. The minute I walked into the surgery room, I was handed two beanie babies to hold onto. I guess that is so that I don't grab onto the doctor and shake him. While the waiting and tests took quite some time, the actual surgery itself is a short procedure. I'd say that I was in there for around 10 to 15 minutes. I went in again the next day for a post-op checkup. On the drive there, I noticed that I could read street signs. They were a little hard to focus, but I could tell what was written. And when they gave me the eye test, I could tell things were better because I could read the lines that were once fuzzy dots on a white background. The verdict? 20/15 vision - woot! My eyesight fluctuates from day to day, depending on if I've been staring at the computer all day or spending time outside. I wouldn't expect anything different since my eyes are still healing. In the meantime, I have to get used to seeing my face in the mirror without glasses... No more hiding behind the frames! ---------------- JUNE 2007 - I have perfect vision, says the doctor at the office. 20/15. WOOP WOOP. ---------------- JANUARY 2008 - Still good. I can brag about my LaserVision when I can easily read signs that others have trouble reading because they're a little small or far away. I have waited many years to have this done. I have always been hesitant to move forward with the surgery because, what can I say, it's my EYES! I am a fireman and dealing with contacts or glasses in the middle of the night is really tough, so I decided to go in for a consultation. The office is clean and all of the staff were very kind and professional. They answered all of my questions (and I had a lot) and never made me feel rushed. When I met Dr. Hyver, to my surprise, he was very down to earth. Seemed like a genuine person. He took the time to explain to me my options (one eye or both eyes, as I don't have much of a prescription in one of my eyes) and also what procedure I qualified for. He is pretty straight forward, but if you have questions, he will sit and answer them all for you. The price was what I was expecting, pretty average for what I was quoted at other facilities. The surgery was quick and easy. I did have some mild discomfort after surgery, but I just rested my eyes closed and took a nap. When I woke up, they felt great. My vision was a little blurry the day of the surgery, but by the next day, I was already seeing 20/20! It has now been almost 2 years since my surgery and I couldn't be happier. I had LASIK done about 6 months ago and was really impressed with the professionalism and number of tests they ran before telling me if I was even a candidate. I didn't feel rushed to make a decision - I was even told to get a second opinion and some questions to ask for comparison. I was able to read the signs on the way home from surgery. After wearing glasses for 23 years and knowing that a sign is there but no clue what it said, was amazing. I had been saying for years how nice it would be to be able read the clock when I wake up and now I can. Here is an update to my eyes. 2 days ago I went to my last post PRK checkup and my vision is now 20/15 which is better then perfect vision. AWESOME right? It feels amazing to wake up and see the alarm clock and not have to worry about glasses and contacts before I sleep. Week 1: Blurry vision but still able to see. Feels like looking through a foggy window. Week 2: It got worse. A lot worse. Like a denser fog. I was told that it will be worse on day 3 but I guess everyone is different. Mine was on week 2. I did both eyes separately and both got worse on week 2. Week3: Better but small fonts are still blurry but larger objects are pretty clear. Week 4: A lot better Now: I dont even think about it because I can see perfectly and it feels as if my eyes were never bad. Honestly, this feeling is even better then getting my college diploma! So even though my cornea is too thin to be a candidate for LASIK, this place was indeed, very clean and the modern interior design is a nice touch. The receptionist and nurses were friendly - I had to leave and come back before my consultation started, but they were totally accomodating and sweet. At the reception desk they have tins of all 3 flavors of Altoids for patients. I called the 800 number and was able to schedule in for an exam/consult with 20 minutes notice. One star docked for the lengthy waiting period in between exams, and the laser-eye-factory feel. There were 7 patients in the waiting area and I think we were all falling asleep (yawn). Another star taken off because after the whole exam, the doctor there told me there was absolutely NOTHING i could do about my vision that that I had to wear glasses/contacts for life. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. What a disappointment! So I got a second opinion from Dr. Faktorovich, whose advisor told me Dr. Hyver uses a microkeratome (an actual knife to cut the cornea) which requires more cornea than ALL laser, which Dr. Faktorovich does. We shall see, I am scheduled there for PRK next Wednesday. Stay tuned! read more

Scott's team makes what could be a very intimidating procedure feel as simple as getting a cavity filled. Scott will only operate if he is certain the operation will be successful, so I felt safe and confident from start to finish. His staff also does a great job of explaining everything, so I felt like I knew what to expect throughout the process. I was shocked at how quick and easy this life-changing procedure was. The surgery itself feels strange, but it's not painful - it's more surreal than anything else - like you're in a sci fi movie. There is some stinging for a few hours after the local anesthesia wears off, but that's normal, and by then you're home and can just go to bed. I woke up the next morning feeling fine, and my eyesight has been great ever since. I strongly recommend Scott Hyver for LASIK. read more

Words of advice 1) Be sure to find someone who can say is your referral - that will save you $800 off the initial price of $6,300. 2) Before you leave the house to go to your appointment, pull all the shades down. Set our computer screen brightness to low so you're more comfortable when you get back. 3) DO sleep afterwards if you are getting both eyes done. After about 30 minutes the numbing drops wore off and it was like little razor blades in my right eye. At this point I was regretting not taking the valium - though I'm not sure that would have helped. It felt much better after I slept for 2 hours 4) Try to use the anti-inflammatory drop ASAP while the numbing medication is still in effect. That one BURNS. The artificial tears they give you is less watery - more goopy - so you may have to shake the vial so that it's comes down to the tip. 5) DO keep a bottle of advil or tylenol handy for afterwards - I took 3 ibuprofens right after the procedure although I was still in pain. If you don't have a bottle of artificial tears, go buy some just in case. 6) DO have a ride back home, and DO have a plan in place for the meal afterwards. I could barely keep my eyes open to microwave my food. Immediately afterwards it will be blurry. The right eye felt like a lot of razor blades were caught in my eye. The left eye just felt gritty, with a few razor blades but manageable. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get home for 1.5 hours after the procedure so during that one hour I couldn't open my eyes I slept for the subsequent 2 hours when I got home (I did not take the valium they offered, so it was for the sole purpose of making the pain go away). When I awoke I could open my eyes! It was still quite gritty and I had to blink frequently and use the artificial tears VERY frequently (used up one of the five vials in half an hour). then in the half hour I was awake, ALL the gritty sensation in that initially painful right eye went away. It was as if my flap has found its rightful place. The left eye was still gritty. By nighttime I could read a book - though not for long - had to keep blinking frequently. Light was still bothering me at this point. The next day I was using the artificial tears every couple of hours. I was 20/20 at my followup appointment. In the subsequent days I used my artificial tears less and less. By the fourth day, I was using it maybe twice a day. I am still seeing significant halos, but I'm sure that will improve with time. read more

After wearing glasses/contacts since the age of 11, I finally decided to go for laser eye surgery. Got my free consult, Mariefe was an awesome consultant, answering my questions and helping me through the process all the way to surgery day and after. I wasn't qualified for Lasik, but I was for PRK (healing time is longer, about 6 months post-op). I used my company's FSA pre-tax benefits for payment, which was totally helpful. Another cool thing is that your contract is lifetime, so if your eyes do get worse again in the future, you're good to go to get it fixed. Surgery day was quick & painless (thanks to numbing drops, some Ibuprofen, and this calming pill thing), less than 10 minutes under the laser light show and I was good to go. On the drive home, the street signs were already clear, you should've seen the smile on my face. Healing from PRK consists of a whole bunch of eye drops, eyes closed in a dark room, and patience, but it's totally worth it. I now have 20/15 vision and I can't be any happier. No more dry irritated eyes from contacts, carrying solution everywhere, and glasses fogging up when I'm eating soup lol. The only side effect so far is dry, stingy eyes after a day of work at the computer, but that's what artificial tears are for. December 9th - 1st appointment to determine if I was a Lasik candidate. I was - check. Stopped wearing contacts 5 days prior to my appointment - check. Was asked if I wanted to come in tomorrow to have the procedure done - "wow, that fast...ok" - check. Financing? Yeah, they have that covered too - check! December 10th - Surgery date in the late afternoon. Procedure from start to finish 10-15 minutes. Overall, it was painless little discomfort when my eyes were being prepped. (Let me clarify discomfort here: the same "type" of pressure you feel around your arm when having your blood pressure checked by those machines at Walgreen's) Afterwords, I went home and kept my eyes shut for 4 hours as they recommended. Somehow, I fell asleep and woke up and it was the 11th. Looked across the room and notice I can now read the alarm clock. Walk to my 2nd story window and look across the street...I can now read the license plates on the parked cars. Several hours later I arrive back at Dr. Hyver's office for a post-op check. Its confirmed, I have between 20-20 and 20-15 vision (I like to round down and just say 20-15). The vision in one eye is a little more hazy than the other, but the doctor said its normal and the eyes heal at a different pace. Overall, I'm stoked. December 14th - Still getting accustomed to wearing goggles at night and constantly reminding myself not to rub my eyes. But I'm very happy to have had the procedure done. Their office answered all of my questions, were very professional and had me on my way to better than 20-20 vision in a matter of hours. Now the question I have been asked - would you do it over again? Yes, I would have done it over again, I would have done it sooner and I would have paid twice what I was charged. Dr. Hyver and his team are worth every penny and then some. Ask yourself this...if he's good enough to perform Lasik on Terrell Owens (who's very livelihood depends on precise vision and hand/eye coordination)...would that be good enough for you? I highly recommend Dr. Hyver to do the LASIK procedure on your eyes! The entire staff is extremely professional (and have a sense of humor!), they make you feel at ease and you barely need to lift a finger from the free DVD, free consultation, day of surgery, and post-op exam. I even had to change my appointment, and Jian was so helpful in providing alternate availability for me. I also got several follow-up emails from staff throughout the process to ensure everything was okay, and even paid for my procedure the day prior so I wouldn't have to worry about it later. The day of surgery was quick and seamless (around 1.5 hours). They give you a zipped bag of goodies with medication, goggles and sunglasses. You can trust Dr. Hyver with your eyes!! Getting LASIK was the best decision of my life so far. If you have VSP it will end up being around $5K for both eyes. They also take FSA which saves you more money. Another doctor who is only interested in helping people that will guarantee him a big cash payout. After having Lasik done somewhere else, I called ScottHyver Visioncare to get a second opinion on some problems I was having. After explaining my situation to the receptionist she told me the doctor doesn't see anyone for second opinions, that he only deals with his own patients. When I explained my doctor asked me to get a second opinion so that he could discuss the issues I was having with another doctor, I was told that Dr. Hvyer doesn't agree with that idea. So basically he believes in working in isolation without ever getting insight or knowledge from other doctors. I sure wouldn't want someone like that working on my eyes! I would recommend going to the doctors at UCSF, they are very knowledgeable and gladly do second opinions. read more

After wearing glasses/contacts since the age of 14 and having a few scares/eye scars due to contacts I decided to see if I qualified for Lasik. Everyone starting with the front desk through the examination/surgery process is super friendly and knowledgeable. They take the time to answer any questions you may have. I have seen a few comments about the factory feel - I think of it as they are very well organized. Dr. Hyver reserves certain days of the week for consultations and reserves another day for just surgeries. I have never had any type of surgery before but I was provided information of the possible risks and the side effects. For me the benefits outweighed the risks since I had already had my eyes damaged by contacts. The day of the surgery April 25th I was extremely nervous, but Dr. Hyver and his staff were really incredible about talking me through everything, making sure that I knew exactly what to expect and what was going on throughout the procedure. The process for me was pretty quick I was in and out in less than an hour. I was seeing 20/15 by the next day although not well enough to go back to work and stare at a computer for 8 hours. Talk about positive life-changing event; that was the result of my visit to ScottHyver Visioncare. From the initial consultation and through the PRK procedure and follow up, this was a good decision. I cannot wait to write this review!! I had my Lasik procedure done three days ago and it was the best decision I ever made! I have to say that Dr. Scott Hyver is amazing!!!! Every part of my entire experience has been nothing but incredible from the online research that I did - to the consultation - to the pre op appointment - to the actual surgery - to the post op appointment - all the way throughout my recovery time - it has been nothing but great!
