Scott's Bar-B-Que, on the Hemingway Hwy.

Scott's Bar-B-Que has a an excellent reputation, and based on my experience yesterday, it is well-deserved. The restaurant is essentially a little store, but there are picnic tables outside. It is located outside of Hemingway, and it is worth the drive. I had a two meat plate of pulled pork and pork ribs. They were both outstanding. I also am a fan of the tangy vinegar sauce. (That was a completely new bbq sauce for me, and I am a fan!) I came in about 10 minutes before closing, and they had already put away the beans, which was a disappointment, because I like to judge a barbecue place also on its baked beans. However, the potato salad and coleslaw were quite good. I drove about 45 minutes out of the way to try Scott's Bar-B-Que, and I am very happy that I did.

Just as it's been portrayed on the (many) tv shows I've seen about it--cash only, outdoor seating, very simple menu. That's what makes it so charming! Nice service, and absolutely delicious meat and sides. The potato salad was particularly delicious, but the beans are incredibly soft and unctuous as well! The sauce was sweet, with heat, and the vinegar base balanced it all beautifully. Worth the drive from our vacation in Myrtle Beach.

Welp, got their 5 minutes too late to enjoy some whole hog bbq. Drove all the way from Dallas, TX and missed my one shot for their famous whole hog. Still kinda upset about it if you can't tell lol. Btw, they're cash only! Cash only people, be ready. Because that's why we missed out on the whole hog. Arrived ready to eat with no cash. Left to go get cash. Came back and they were out of whole hog. Anyways the ribs were fantastic. Even despite the fact they were kind of cold lol. They were still pretty dang good! Super super smoky. Totally tasted like backyard ribs. The chicken was ... chicken. Pretty good. Nothing to write home about. My potato salad was swimming/drowning in mayo. Tasted like Walmart, which honestly I wasn't totally mad at. One day I will be back for their whole hog. Mark my words!

Ribs, brisket, collard greens, potato salad and hush puppies with a glass of beer was my favorite with the original bbq sauce, so good. Service was excellent and ambiance is clean and casual. I would highly recommend you try.

Scott's Bar-B-Que is award-winning, famous, and in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, my family and I were staying in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of a takeout/delivery-desert. Scott's is a little outside of downtown, and literally on the side of the road. I had read about the famous bar-b-que pits and I imagined I could glimpse them in the back, but who knows! The parking spots were pretty full but we squeezed into a questionable space. 3 older gentleman sat on a bench outside, chatting. A sign on the door said only 3 people at a time, but the owner let us in, as there was plenty of room to social distance inside. Waiting in line, I tried to read the signs and awards and articles hanging on the wall, and tried to identify the celebrities posing with the owners in the photo board by the order window. A basket of mini cucumbers and another of pecans sat next to some soda and chips for sale. I love seeing home grown stuff for sale. Truthfully, I couldn't understand the menu. Was a BBQ plate the BBQ sandwich plus sides? Or just BBQ with sides? FYI, the plate = sandwich plus sides. It also comes with BBQ sauce, so don't order that separately! They only take cash, and the woman who rang me up calculated the total with a calculator and a sheet of paper. Love it! The BBQ (pork) was insanely tender and definitely delicious. I was not a huge fan of the BBQ sauce, which is Carolina style- spicy and vinegary, but I ate the whole things anyways! The plate portion is huge! 1 plate could easily make 3 sandwiches. To say that I over ordered is a huge understatement.

Now that I live only 30 minutes from Scott's, I plan on coming here several times a month.

Still the best BBQ in the Carolinas or for that matter in the Southeast. You can't really compare it to Texas, Memphis, or St. Louis BBQ because they are all different styles. I read a review that was posted four months ago by someone who complained the the BBQ was in four inch strands. Seriously? It's called "pulled pork" for a reason. I know that there are some places that make "chopped 'cue" especially in North Carolina but that stuff is just chopped mush. Scott's smokes some seriously good BBQ with a fantastic vinegar and pepper sauce. Try it and you won't be disappointed.

We took a BBQ road trip to Hemingway to check out the original location of Rodney Scott's bbQ joint. I've been a fan for decades. Following his rise to fame and eating my weight in delicious smoked pork! Rodney is a legend and has won accolades and international fame as a James Beard winner. It started here! This hole on the wall BBQ restaurant is worth the hype! They grill whole hogs and use a vinegar based sauce (my favorite style). There are picnic tables across the street. Order a tea, BBQ and some sides and taste the love!

We were very excited to try this place so the disappointment was even more pronounced. We ordered a bunch of dishes and none of them were standouts except for the fried chicken sandwich. I am so grateful for Yelpers that posted recommendations of that sandwich because that was the only thing I finished. The other meats were not that tender and the sauces were nothing special. As you can see from the pictures I tried a bunch of different dishes but we would not up not finishing anything other than the chicken sandwich. A lot of people mentioned that the strong vinegar in the RS sauce was not very appetizing, but I know that is a signature of North Carolina BBQ. But that did not bother me as much as the lack of flavor and tenderness in meats themselves other than the chicken sandwich.

Pulled porch & chicken were flavorful & juicy. The baked beans were probably the best that we have ever had. Went back and got an additional order to take with us!! Big portion and outdoor seating. Cash only.

    Gotta find a spot !

I have seen many videos and stories on Scott's BBQ . I grew up in Bennettsville , S.C. , but now live in Las Vegas , Nevada . I have also lived in Texas , so I am well versed in regional BBQ . For Pulled Pork , it's got to be Carolina BBQ . Las Vegas has exploded with lots of BBQ places , but most are Texas style , but they all do Pulled Pork . I have tried most of them . They do make good Brisket and Hot Links . As far as Scott's goes , I found the Pulled Pork to be very tender and the sauce is point on . I just got the sandwich since I was driving back to Charlotte that night to catch a plane , so I didn't have a lot of time to eat . The parking lot / road was full and I had to park a ways from the place . I ate mine in the car . The drive is something else . I was coming from Myrtle Beach , so it was a long detour . I ate at 4 BBQ places on my 2 week trip home to the Carolinas in September and I have to give Scott's #2 . Number #1 would be Smithfield's in Laurinburg , N.C, , but only by a small margin . Number #3 would be Shuler's in Latta , S.C. which has a very nice facility . Number #4 would be Stanton's Fly In Barbecue and Fish Camp , which is in my hometown of Bennettsville , S.C. and has a runway for small planes and helicopters to land there , which is pretty cool .

You don't have sausage smoked? You don't have sliced turkey smoked

I don't think I've ever seen smoked sausage or turkey there. They are known almost exclusively for quahog barbecue.

What does RS do with the pig skin from BBQing? Wanted to taste the crispy skin with the BBQ but only ordered the bag of skins for the crunch?

The Hemingway location sells their pork skin in bags at the store. Rodney Scott no longer works at this location but it's still run by the Scott family.

Is Rodney still actually cooking at this location or is he over in Charleston as that location suggest on their website?

He's left that location, safe to say he's over in Charleston.

Luckily I saw a packed place on Mr. Joe White Avenue called Simply Southern Smokehouse. Place looked legit and had a full parking lot so I pulled in. There is only one way in and once you get in, the cashier is on the right with the $15 all you can eat buffet right next to it. The $15 also included all you can drink soft drinks, water and sweet tea. I paid my money and grabbed a plate and ran right up to the buffet. They start out light with vegetables and sides, working up to the main courses of fried chicken, fried fish, pulled pork, smoked chicken and some hot wings. After that, they had some mac & cheese, and then the desserts which was blueberry cobbler, peach cobbler, homemade banana pudding...and a couple of other things. I started off with some broad beans, stewed okra and tomatoes, smoked chicken and hot wings. I brought my plate and my silverware to an empty table, which was getting hard to find as the place was so packed and then went up to fetch me a glass of water to wash it down with. They serve Pepsi products and of course sweet tea but I was going to save my calories for dessert. The place was clean, well lit and the seating was well designed with booths along the wall and tables in the center... and plenty of room between the tables. Once seated I dug right in. The broad beans were excellent. Done right and full of flavor. The stewed tomatoes and okra, although cook correctly was a bit bland for my liking. The smoked chicken was excellent and I used a bit of the golden SC BBQ sauce on it...great...and homemade. The hot wings were the real deal meaty and moist with a nice kick. I finished the plate in about five minutes. Time for round two. On my second trip up, I put some collard greens, lima beans, a piece of fried chicken and a piece of fried fish on the fresh plate. As I sat down to eat, I put a bit of hot vinegar sauce on the collard greens and dug in. The collards were excellent and the homemade vinegar hot sauce gave it a bit of a kick and bite. The Lima beans were soft and loaded with flavor. I then moved on to the fried chicken, which was cooked correctly with the skin crispy and well battered and the meat moist on the inside. That said, it was bland. Given how well the beans were seasoned I was surprised. Same thing with the fish, but they had a real good house sauce for it which gave it a nice flavor and saved it, but overall both the fried chicken and the fried fish were bland. I then went up for a plate number three and realized I was not gonna be able to eat anymore mains, which was a shame since the pulled pork looked great... It will have to wait for the next time I come. I did, however leave a bit of room for dessert and I'm glad I did . The banana pudding was delicious with a full banana taste and 'Nilla wafers on top and bottom adding a bit of crunch. I only had enough room for one of the cobbler so I chose peach and it did not disappoint. Nice and warm with a sweet peach flavor and tasty crumbles. I wanted more but controlled myself. As I got up to leave, I placed five dollars on the table for the cleanup guy who was hustling and keeping the place neat and tidy. I then looked around and noticed this was a real local spot full of people from Myrtle Beach. You have families, elderly people, young people, construction workers and people from local businesses. For $15 it cannot be beat. Not only will I be back again but I plan on bringing some of my friends from up north who are going to love this place...plus I gotta try that pulled pork and Mac and cheese...if the fried chicken and fish have more seasoning, I'll up them to 5 stars.

There were a few times our drinks got low, and we had to look around for our waitress, but it wasn't a huge deal. One thing I did notice was that the restaurant felt a little warm and humid inside, but with how busy it was, I can understand why. Now let's get to the best part--the food! My mom ate the crab cakes and cleaned her plate. She said they were so good she almost licked the plate clean! The kids had the chicken tenders and loved them. They were just a little overcooked, which is why we ended up taking some home, but they still enjoyed them. My wife ordered the HUGE grilled shrimp salad and finished every bite. Let me tell you--if you've never tried swordfish before, go to Carolina Roadhouse and order it! I had mine broiled, and it was cooked perfectly. It was tender, flavorful, and hands down one of the best fish dishes I've had. My only complaint? I wanted more! Overall, my little family had a great experience, and we'll definitely be back.
