I had some business to attend to in South Myrtle Beach and as I finished up I started to get hungry for lunch. Luckily I saw a packed place on Mr. Joe White Avenue called Simply Southern Smokehouse. Place looked legit and had a full parking lot so I pulled in. There is only one way in and once you get in, the cashier is on the right with the $15 all you can eat buffet right next to it. The $15 also included all you can drink soft drinks, water and sweet tea. I paid my money and grabbed a plate and ran right up to the buffet. They start out light with vegetables and sides, working up to the main courses of fried chicken, fried fish, pulled pork, smoked chicken and some hot wings. After that, they had some mac & cheese, and then the desserts which was blueberry cobbler, peach cobbler, homemade banana pudding...and a couple of other things. I started off with some broad beans, stewed okra and tomatoes, smoked chicken and hot wings. I brought my plate and my silverware to an empty table, which was getting hard to find as the place was so packed and then went up to fetch me a glass of water to wash it down with. They serve Pepsi products and of course sweet tea but I was going to save my calories for dessert. The place was clean, well lit and the seating was well designed with booths along the wall and tables in the center... and plenty of room between the tables. Once seated I dug right in. The broad beans were excellent. Done right and full of flavor. The stewed tomatoes and okra, although cook correctly was a bit bland for my liking. The smoked chicken was excellent and I used a bit of the golden SC BBQ sauce on it...great...and homemade. The hot wings were the real deal meaty and moist with a nice kick. I finished the plate in about five minutes. Time for round two. On my second trip up, I put some collard greens, lima beans, a piece of fried chicken and a piece of fried fish on the fresh plate. As I sat down to eat, I put a bit of hot vinegar sauce on the collard greens and dug in. The collards were excellent and the homemade vinegar hot sauce gave it a bit of a kick and bite. The Lima beans were soft and loaded with flavor. I then moved on to the fried chicken, which was cooked correctly with the skin crispy and well battered and the meat moist on the inside. That said, it was bland. Given how well the beans were seasoned I was surprised. Same thing with the fish, but they had a real good house sauce for it which gave it a nice flavor and saved it, but overall both the fried chicken and the fried fish were bland. I then went up for a plate number three and realized I was not gonna be able to eat anymore mains, which was a shame since the pulled pork looked great... It will have to wait for the next time I come. I did, however leave a bit of room for dessert and I'm glad I did . The banana pudding was delicious with a full banana taste and 'Nilla wafers on top and bottom adding a bit of crunch. I only had enough room for one of the cobbler so I chose peach and it did not disappoint. Nice and warm with a sweet peach flavor and tasty crumbles. I wanted more but controlled myself. As I got up to leave, I placed five dollars on the table for the cleanup guy who was hustling and keeping the place neat and tidy. I then looked around and noticed this was a real local spot full of people from Myrtle Beach. You have families, elderly people, young people, construction workers and people from local businesses. For $15 it cannot be beat. Not only will I be back again but I plan on bringing some of my friends from up north who are going to love this place...plus I gotta try that pulled pork and Mac and cheese...if the fried chicken and fish have more seasoning, I'll up them to 5 stars. read more

I will start with the people who work there. They were very nice and polite. I had issues with the food. My 1st plate I had a porkhop ( very hard to cut and tuff to chew) cabbage and collard greens were very bland. The sweet potatoes were sweet and good. The fried chicken was good. Mashed potatoes were ok. The fried potatoes would be better if they were hot, they were lukewarm. The peach cobbler would have been better if it wasnt lukewarm. The Cornbread was perfect & delicious. The ice cream machine was good but only had vanilla. It would be nicer if the had some toppings for the ice cream. The place was a big room. Booths on two sides of the room, tables in the middle. The tables were clean but the bathroom was dusty. It looked nice but really needs a good dusting. It cost $36 for 2 people. It was semi busy. Ok. I'm more at 3 and 1/2 but I want the masses to check the place out so I went with 4. The price is right. Dinner for 2 was $34. That's what we would pay for lunch at most fast casual chains so it is quite reasonable for the selection and abundance of food options. The staff were friendly and we were treated to a beautiful song while we ate. You pay to get in the door and then you are free to eat and drink all you want. The buffet line moves quickly and the food was replenished long before the trays were low. The food was all decent but not inspiring. The ribs had a nice dry rub and were tender but a bit dry. The fried chicken was similar to a fresh piece from a fast food restaurant-lots of crunch and moist enough inside. There are lots of sides to enjoy. I ate the baked chicken, pulled pork, fried fish as meats. I ate the green beans, cabbage, Mac and cheese, chicken bog as sides. Every veggie and side was seasoned to perfection. The employees were extremely friendly, the buffet was clean and tidy, the entire restaurant was extremely clean and just felt like home! The food was hot and homemade, the meat was smoked and wonderful. If you leave hungry, there's something wrong with you. My kids even left full! I had pulled pork, chicken pot pie, Mac n cheese, black eyed peas, chicken n dumplings, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato casserole, banana pudding and peach cobbler(definitely not just one serving of all of that) and that's only about half of what was offered! Nice lunch for what is these days considered a reasonable price for a buffet. The bbq was more of what I have come to expect for South Carolina bbq: no smoky taste to the meat so the sauce(s) makes it bbq. The pulled pork tastes like it was cooked in the oven. Good selection of veggies to round out the meal. You pay first right inside the door and then go through the buffet line. The dining area is large and comfortably spaced out. Drinks and refills are diy. There will be at least one person circulating through the dining area to take away plates. This was the most disappointing meal on my recent trip to Coastal SC and NC. I'm guessing this is just in a touristy area, and visitors comes from all over the US where there may not be good country cooking, or any country cooking whatsoever. However, in Texas, there are numerous such places, and some of those are ayce, or buffet style. I felt the quality here was average at best. The word smokehouse seems to be a misnomer as I only saw 1 item on the buffet that was smoked the day we visited. Not sure it was even smoked onsite either. I saw a pile of wood at the rear of the building, but no sign of the smoker, and the wood pile was very old looking. If the restaurant smoked their meats, you typically smell the smoke in the air from the parking lot. Everything seemed basic to me, from the chicken n dumplings, which had very thin dumplings to the sub-par banana pudding. In summary, I don't see how this became a 4.5-star restaurant. If I had any issue is that they put pulled pork on the buffet, but no rolls. I like to put mine on a soft roll. Not a fan of just pulled pork.
