You'll never go broke overestimating the bad press the City of Oakland gets both locally and nationally. Yes, crime is up, homelessness is out of control, the A's, Warriors and Raiders left. At some point you have to worry about the elephants at the Oakland Zoo moving to Las Vegas. Enough. Let's talk about an independent Oakland institution that hopefully isn't going anywhere. Scott's Seafood in Jack London Square, celebrating their 50th anniversary. . Yes, Oakland is the home of the Black Panthers and the Hells Angels but it's still a city where business is done everyday: Oakland is still the home of major Fortune 500 companies like Clorox, and the University of California makes its headquarters here. Plenty of high-tech companies too like Pandora call Oakland home. And the Port of Oakland ain't going anywhere. So you need a place fora business lunch: That's Scott's. When you walk in, it's all business. Private booths, crisp linen tablecloths, and great views of the Alameda Estuary and the giant container ships. Great spot to watch the sunset too. Just the kind of deal making place you'd find Willie Brown, or Jerry Brown, or Tim Brown for that matter. Servers dress in button down shirts and ties. No nose rings or purple haired servers here. They know their business, and their menus, and their wines. Of course Scott's isn't only for the business crowd. It's a place to go to celebrate milestones. Anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, etc. My wife and I came to Scott's for her birthday on a Tuesday night: Even on a relatively slow night, Scott's still had a piano happy hour (our pianist actually played with The Temptations) I started off with clam chowder, which was excellent, piping hot and served with plenty of warm Boudin sourdough from San Francisco. (Sadly no more Colombo in Oakland anymore, another town favorite gone). My wife ordered the oysters which our server (a longtime vet of 11 years) suggested splitting a dozen both raw and Rockefeller, which came meaty and cheesy with plenty of creamed spinach: it was a great choice. Be warned slurping your oyster with Scott's homemade horseradish is like taking a fastball from Dave Stewart; the Oakland native and Athletics pitching ace, upside the head. I ordered the cioppino which came steaming hot with toasted crostini and cracked Dungeness crab. . Fantastic. I've had cioppino lots of places but as Johnny Cash famously said while playing A Boy Named Sue across the Bay at San Quentin "I've fought tougher men, but I really can't remember when." I might have had better cioppino than Scott's but I can't remember when either. My wife got the petit filet mignon and lobster tail. I'll order the filet next time, Buttery and perfectly cooked. We topped it with white chocolate cheesecake and an on the house raspberry sorbet. Wasn't a cheap birthday dinner but like head coach John Madden of the Oakland Raiders famously said "when you played the Raiders, you knew you'd been in a game." When I get my credit card statement it'll be a hefty charge but it'll remind me of how good a meal I had. Did I mention brunch is back at Scott'? OK. Now I did. Haven't been to Scott's in years. My parents son used to be the general manager and my high-school reunion was held there a couple times. Made reservations for my sis and brother inlaw as we were coming together for their brother's, my parnters 6 Mos passing and we wanted to be near the water. I made reservations early as it was a holiday weekend and didnt know if it was going to be crowded. Got a lovely table by the water. Started with some good old chowder. The offer the red and the white. I went for the white. Then I decided on the seafood pasta. Waitress was helpful and attentive. The food was good as I remember, which for a restaurant that been around for a this long is a rarity. Will be back for their brunch. read more

- Worst Mother's Day Experience Ever Mother's Day at Scott's was by far the worst dining experience we have ever had. We have been loyal customers for years and have spent $300, $400, and even close to $500 during previous visits. After this experience, we will never return. For the first time ever, they switched to a buffet and failed to inform us beforehand. We only found out after arriving. The entire experience was chaotic. Kids were playing around the food, the food itself was cold, and overall it was unappetizing. We literally did not eat anything. Not one bite. The manager apologized and offered us free buffet tickets to come back and eat the same buffet we had just refused to eat. Despite not eating, we were still charged $320. I called the next day and was told they would look into it. A week later, I had to call back myself and was promised a refund because they acknowledged we had not eaten any of the food. Since Mother's Day, I have repeatedly called trying to resolve this issue. Today is June 19th, and I still have not received a refund. The main manager, Ramiro, refuses to take responsibility. Every time I call, employees claim he is "in a meeting." Yesterday, Gerald told me he could not disclose when Ramiro would be available, yet the host informed me he would be back the next day. When I called again today, I was actually told, "Ramiro is not ready to talk to you yet." Imagine a manager who is "not ready" to speak with a customer about a $320 charge. One employee even told me, "Just call your bank." I have never seen management avoid customers like this. If this is how loyal customers are treated after spending hundreds of dollars over the years, I can only imagine how others are treated. Save your money and go somewhere else. There are plenty of restaurants that value their customers and know how to handle problems professionally. read more

In all my decades of living near Jack London Square, I finally made it to Scott's Seafood when for a weekday dinner. We were promptly seated by the window, with a great view of the waters. I immediately admired the ambiance of Scott's Seafood. Thi sis a really gorgeous restaurant with beautiful live piano music and impeccable service. Okay but how did I forget about this place?? Went to Scott's for a Friday work lunch that turned into a mini reunion with friends I hadn't seen in a while. It was decently busy, a mix of the retiree marina crowd and work lunch groups, but still relaxed enough for us to really sit and catch up without feeling rushed. The vibe is casual upscale. Grown, but not stuffy. The weather absolutely showed off. Blue sky, sun out, overlooking the water...it felt like we timed it perfectly. Not guna lie, I had been stalking the menu all morning before our lunch trying to decide what I wanted. We started with the seafood trio appetizer; calamari, salmon cakes, and lightly breaded shrimp. Perfect size for sharing, crispy without being heavy. And they bring complimentary bread and butter, which I will always say yes to. It had been a week, so obviously I ordered an espresso martini, tequila (of course). I reluctantly said yes to Kahlúa and it leaned a little more "milky" than I prefer, good, just adjusting next time. I ordered the stuffed crab salmon with mashed potatoes and vegetables and it was bomb. Bomb bomb bomb. Great portion size and I left my plate CLEAN. Okayyy. They had cute little Valentine's arrangements on the tables which was a sweet touch without doing too much. Didn't have a reservation on the busiest day of the year but we got lucky enough to grab a spot at the bar! The clam chowder was a great start ! Then I hadn't pre-fixe menu and it was amazing!!! Everything was delich!! I usually dont try new stuff but I didn't feel like thinking today so the Valentine Pre-Fixe for $92 was perfect! The salad had feta, strawberries and walnuts!!! Then I had the chimichurri steak and lobster ! The steak was cooked perfectly and it was tender and tasteful!! The sauce was the best !! We also ordered the ravioli bc I was craving pasta and it was also really tasty and good portion to share! My dessert, a tart, was in the shape of a heart and the frosting was pure sweetness! They had the pianist playing and the vibe was full of heartfelt love throughout- saw many couples and families taking their elder mothers out and it was heartwarming! I recently had a chance to go to brunch at Scott's seafood in Oakland Jack London Square to celebrate my nephew. I must say I was quite pleased with offerings. We had a nice seat with the view of the actuary in the rear of the main dining room. We were a pretty large group so we had a couple of servers who really took great care of our group. We have been waiting to eat, so my wife had a salad with shrimp and what's it called the art, the seafood salad and I have shrimp and grits which were excellent. We also had a Cabernet, which we thought was quite delicious as well. I'd recommend Scott's seafood whether you're a small group or a large group they were very accommodating. The view was nice. The service is nice. The price is great for the quality of the food and seafood that you get. I can't wait to go back again. read more

I honestly didn't have high expectations for Scott's because of the overall rating on Yelp but my experience would consider a return in the future. Reservations at 7pm on a Monday, seated immediately as the restaurant was also not packed at all. About all window seats were taken besides one in which, we sat at. The waiter was attentive, but seemed very rushed at all times. The calamari appetizer was good. The crabbed stuffed salmon was actually surprisingly wonderful! It didn't have a fishy taste to it at all. The mash potato was finely mashed and chives always add a nice touch. The veggies could've used more seasoning. A little garlic would go a long way. I would recommend both of these plates to try. They also validate parking if you park in the lot right next to them so just keep that in mind otherwise you'll probably pay more at other lots across or down the street. read more

Can't believe I haven't reviewed Scott's until now. Scott's is pretty much an institution in Oakland's Jack London Square. It's been around for a very long time. I celebrated my college graduation here. Yes, that long. I've been here for work lunches, celebrations, date nights with my partner, and brunch. Scott's is a throwback to an earlier era of fine dining. White tablecloths, a piano player, and staff dressed better than most of the patrons. They specialize in seafood, and offer a sizable selection of fish and shellfish dishes, and seafood pastas and salads. A pescatarian's dream. Service is pretty good, but could use a bit of polishing in terms of attentiveness, warmth, and sense of urgency. Something to work on, there is always room for improvement. In addition to being a nice dinner destination, they are open for weekend brunch (not sure about the rest of the week). Great place for a leisurely brunch with a view. There is a gorgeous outdoor patio, a perfect place to sit on the water when the weather is nice. Prices are on the steeper side, about what you would expect for a nicer place. There is an underground parking garage in the square, with an attendant, super convenient. Jack London Sq. is one of the nicer parts of Oakland, a destination area, but you are still in Oakland, so be cognizant of your surroundings. Bring your checkbook and enjoy. read more

Scott's is a chain with several locations. This js probably the most iconic due to the waterfront location. This restaurant is traditionally upscale and very pleasantly outfitted in ambiance, mimicking a private club in atmosphere. There's lots of cozy, comfortable seating with a broad view to the estuary. I've had many meals here, hosted an event once, and always the food is good and the service in particular is exceptional. You can either park in the nearby underground garage in Jack London Square or use the valet parking. Depending on the time of day and your comfort level I'd recommend the valet for safety reasons. Should you use the garage yourself have your ticket validated at the restaurant. Of course seafood is their specialty but other choices are just as satisfying. This time I came for a birthday party in one of the private dining rooms and it was very well organized and executed. The service was top notch and everything was impressively well done. The meal was set as it would in a catered situation, yet a vegetarian option was offered as well. There were drinks and appetizers given during the reception time, and once seated a fresh, tasty salad was served. The main course followed, a chicken dish, and it was well prepared. The only downside was that the entree was just OK and lacked flavor. This may be a product of preparing a large quantity of servings? Coffee followed with a birthday cake for dessert. The atmosphere was upbeat, decorations allowed, and the event was nicely done. Everyone seemed to have a good time and not a complaint heard about the meal or service. What can you say about Scott's?! It is a Bay Area institution. The service is top notch, and I love the fact that they take your leftovers to the kitchen and box them up for you. That little touch makes the experience so much better. The seafood is delicious. The cocktails are tasty and the raw bar is always on point. The ambience was very quaint. They had inside and outside seating almost every seat has a view of the water, which is always beautiful. The only downside is they do not validate parking. This is definitely not the place to go if you're on a budget or counting pennies because everything on here is expensive but it's worth it. You get what you pay for. read more

Walked in for a very early Friday afternoon/evening dinner with my 16yo daughter. The most immediate reaction was 'WOW!': Old/style 'grand' restaurant complete with an imposing entrance and a dumb valet announcing the dress code on a sign (kiddo was in hot pink sweats and Birkenstocks so immediately panickedGrand piano, fabulous art and lighting, plush seating and white tablecloths - I was not expecting this at all.. We were seated at a table next to the window by an immaculately dressed and made up, friendly young woman. It was a good start: a view of the little water shuttle, boats, ships, seagulls and an overcast sky - all just perfect. Then Alex came over and introduced himself as our server. The rest of the late afternoon was just a joy: 3-generations' families coming in to celebrate birthdays, a large table of VERY well-dressed older folk celebrating an anniversary, a young family with both 1yr old son and his dad were sharing their birthday meal.. And if anything like ours, they were in for a treat! Scott's has been around for years and years and was my family's favorite--second only to the original Spenger's which is now closed. The quality of the food is always excellent and the Service of the staff Can't be beat either. I was honestly pleasantly surprised by Scott's Seafood in Jack London. A staple to the area, I've recently been to a gala event at their event center (located right behind the restaurant), but never truly ate here. We had our prom dinner at the Walnut Creek location years ago, I won't mention how many, but finally the time arrived to sit down and break bread at the JL location. Located right on the water, Scott's is actually very vibrant inside. Around Sunday at brunch time there was a pianist keeping things lively, and on a cold & breezy day, we enjoyed sitting inside getting warm and toasty with the family. I do want to mention that this is not a budget friendly spot, and we were here for something special, so do note the prices beforehand. Fresh sourdough bread and butter for the table (a few baskets) were devoured, and our group ordered bowls of the Boston Clam Chowder (would order the bowl for the price, the cup is tiny), the Seafood Salad, Chicken Piccata, and a Cajun Pasta. All dishes were solid, fresh, and comforting. The chowder is creamy and filling, chicken came with mashed potatoes and green beans/carrots, the pasta with ample pieces of sausage and seasoning, and the salad with a beautiful display of prawns, bay shrimp, Dungeness crab, and more. Wait staff was quick and efficient, and knows the ropes working with larger parties. On a day with better weather, sitting outdoors enjoying the views during happy hour would probably be most enjoyable. I didn't get to view the entire restaurant, but extremely spacious and a beautiful bar to saddle up to. Not sure if and when we will be back, but will always have love to Jack London and bringing a bit of zest back to this area. read more

Came here on a whim while in the square; definitely not worth the prices for what we ordered. I had raw oysters & it set me back $25 for 6 while my companion had a seafood tower (cold) that ran $90. These dishes are not worth the cost for sure, though they weren't bad. The interior of the place was neat and definitely had that sophisticated vibe to it. The server was also good, given how busy she appeared to be. Would I come back here specifically? Probably not unless it's a special occasion. read more

From the moment I reached out to plan the event, Brianna, Scott's Catering Sales Associate, made the process so easy and enjoyable. She patiently listened to our wishes for a small, intimate lunch for 30 people, offered options for both Saturday and Sunday, and reserved the beautiful Terrace Room, which was perfect for our group. The room was bright and airy with great bay views. The day of the event, the room was beautifully set up, and I could focus on placing my personal decorations without any stress. Our servers, Diego and Jackie, were amazing from start to finish, attentive, friendly, and truly made our guests feel welcome. Many family members commented on their professionalism and warmth. The food was great, with a wide variety of options during the Jazz Brunch, so I didn't have to worry about accommodating different dietary restrictions. The jazz band led by Mr. Eric, who played throughout the brunch, added a wonderful touch that made the party even more enjoyable. Every detail was handled with care, and the whole staff went above and beyond to make my mother's birthday perfect. The service and food were mediocre at best. Inattentive server who didn't check back. The other people who delivered drinks, bread, etc acted like it was more like a diner--no finesse. The food was bland and not worth the money charged. Dogs were in the restaurant--I'm a dog owner/lover, but a carpeted, red-booth restaurant is not where they belong. I have been to Scott's in SF, in Folsom, Sacramento and mostly in Oakland. Although back in the day when I was at Intel I was at the Folsom location alot. I think SF is closed now. It doesn't matter which one you go to 'cause you know what you're going to get. I was going to say like an upscale Denny's specializing in seafood and steaks, ala you know what you are going to get regardless of where you go. The one caveat to that is the bartenders. The bartenders in Folsom back in the day and currently in Oakland have always been right on with the drinks. Today I suggested we go to Scott's and to my surprise my partner said, "ok". Didn't really figure they were doing brunch but they were. A New Orleans Jazz Style Brunch with an awesome piano man. We got there a little late and only heard Mr. Piano Man for a short while before the downer canned playlist came on. Hey, we are in Oakland, everyone is depressed enough and on drugs, we don't need this canned downer music on our resume. Pump it up. People will stay longer and eat and drink more if the music is upbeat. When we arrived it took a minute for service to kick in, prolly because a lot of people were seated at the same time. But then it kicked in. First time sitting on the patio and it was nice. It is shielded from the wind with very clear glass panels and canvas coverings. Also, gas heat lamps. I always like being by the water. There is always lots to see from boats going by, birds doing their thing, people watching and the new people/bike ferry coming and going to and from Alameda, "Woodstock". The mannequin gentleman upon entering is holding a sign reminding patrons "No unnecessarily revealing clothing and No bedtime or sleeping attire is allowed". Why does this need to be posted??? This is a nice place. You are not hitting Jack in the Box for 99 tacos for 2 cents after hot boxing all night. So the food has always been good as well as the drinks. As for the New Orleans Style Jazz Brunch, hhhhmm. We split the Lake Charles Seafood Omelette. It was good but needed to be spicier. The chef needs to visit New Orleans to understand New Orleans cooking. I've been there a few times and when you know New Orleans food, you know. The beignets were excellent and a nice added touch. Back a few years ago, friends of ours were getting married and we were taking pictures of them along the Waterfront. Scott's was in the middle of a remodel and covid shut down. Somebody in there noticed we were doing something nice and came out with a bottle of champs and glasses for us. Huge props to this guy. Still a nice place. Pricier than it should be but still nice. This place sits in the shadow of the now closed Waterfront Hotel which also had a restaurant and bar. As Oakland continues to spin around the toilet bowl of the bay area under greasy newsom and local politics let's hope Scott's can survive. read more

Came here at 6pm for a celebration of a friend. Very large seating inside beautiful view of the water classy ambiance. Nice staff and live piano. The prices were high. I ordered 2 delicious pineapple mango mocktails that had the perfect mix of mango & sparkling kick with the fresh mint it was so good. The clam chowder cup which was a very small cup for $14. The chowder tasted classic, with fresh cut black pepper it had a good salty taste and good amount of chunks & thick consistency. I ordered the crab stuffed salmon which had a nice thin crunch on the outside which was consistent on the whole piece of fish. The crab wasn't too overbearing in flavor it meshed well with the salmon which tasted perfect to me. My favorite part was mixing the crab with the lobster sauce which had a lobster bisque flavor. The garlic mashed potatoes were a little soft for me but again just a simple side nothing too crazy and along with the veggies which weren't too soft or too hard, but were sorta boring in comparison to the fish and sauce but I still cleared my plate so clearly it was all delicious. Surprisingly the desert menu didn't stick out to me so I stuck with $5 house coffee which was so delicious it doesn't need cream and sugar.
