So I own an '04 Camry with enough miles on it to put it significantly past due for all sorts of maintenance milestones. No, I don't wear khaki slacks all the time, but I do wear polo shirts. No, I don't shop at the Gap. It's not my fault I like a good dependable car with a 5 star crash rating, ok? Anyway, I finally had a failure of a not so original part - One of the serpentine belts. To my quick dismay, I no longer possessed a breaker bar and would not be able to replace this part myself, much less it's companion belt. However, my wife works not too far from Scotty's and was recommended by her boss/friend to send me over there. They quoted me a more than reasonable price, and the total was spot on. The work was done within 4 hours, and this was after they had 3 other cars already in the shop. The staff (all or nearly all family as far as I can tell, and all very lovely and friendly people) was awesome, professional but also very personable. I quizzed them about transmission work, and they were honest that if they felt they could not do it, they would recommend a shop. They certainly won me over, and have my and my wife's business. We'll surely be taking our RV over there to get smog and to pass smog. read more

A few weeks back I was having issues with my truck. I'm from out of town and the shop just happened to be open past business hours. I'll preface this review by saying the customer service by Sam and Sandy was outstanding. They are knowledgeable and seemed to actually care. The repairs is a different story. I believe in you get what you pay for. So for $220 to diagnose your vehicle, you'd hope they would find the correct problem. The day after dropping off my truck I was told I needed a throttle body service and to have my computer updated. $620. Ok, I understand good work costs money. I picked up my truck the following day and it ran well for about a week. Then, the same issue occurred. I was able to get my truck running again and it went fine for about another week. Two days ago, my truck left me stranded on the 15 fwy. Not fun. I decided to do my own research and found the issue was in the throttle body but it was the servo in side that opens the butterfly valve. So, a new throttle body is what I needed. After spending $140 for the part and an hour of my time to replace it, the truck feels brand new! The response is so much better, the rich exhaust smell has dissipated and I can accelerate at speed without hesitation or sputtering! So, I'm out $620 for something I ended up fixing myself. Not happy about that. There are tons of good reviews about Scotty's on here so maybe I'm just the exception to the rule. It still stings. Yesterday, I was in dire need of an oil change and getting my tail lights changed. Being that I'm not from riverside, I took to yelp to help me find a really good mechanic. I am extremely happy that I found this place. I have yet to have a better experience at an auto shop. The staff was very friendly and knew exactly what they were doing. The second I got there, they were ready to help me. And the receptionist was such a sweetheart, I believe she was the mechanic's daughter. She even offered me a ride to school in case my car wouldn't be ready for me in time. The price was also incredible. I wish I could give this place more stars. I highly recommend them. It's been a long time since I did business here, and I'm glad to see that they are still around. While I can't say if they still do complete engine rebuilds, a friend and I each had a mid-60s Chevelle engine rebuilt here in the mid-1990s for unleaded gas. We were both highly pleased with the results, and my friend's car is still on the road. (Mine is garaged for no fault of its own.) Their attitude then was the epitome of customer service, and comments here indicate that is still the case. Way to go, Scotty!! I'm glad to see you are still in business. read more

Brought 2 of my cars here. The service was great. They were up front and honest about not being able to work on one of my foriegn cars, but they got my other car up and running. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because they are definitely more expensive than most comparable shops. I guess you get what you pay for. Plus, they charge for a diagnostic. The charge is waived if you go forward with the repairs, but with their high prices, make you almost feel pressured to go ahead and let them do the work after being charged for the diagnosis. I understand this practice from a business standpoint, but from a customer standpoint, there are still dozens of local shops around that will provide a free diagnostic check. These are the places I would go to first. They also offer a AAA discount, but then again, since their prices are so much higher, you're not really saving money. If they ever change their policy and offer free diagnostics, I'll be back. Until then..... read more

Caring & Dependable! Scotty's replaced our son's 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee engine in June. They sent gentle e-mail reminders this month in order to check that his replacement was performing appropriately.  In addition to inspecting his vehicle today, they changed the oil and counseled him regarding the engine light.  It takes a village to get a kid through college. I have been a customer of Scotty's since 2001. Scott and Caren run a great shop where the customer always comes first. Sure the cost of an oil change is higher then you would find at one of the oil change places but you get a full inspection by a mechanic and they can tell you what your car actually needs instead of the other places that want to sell you add on junk that you really don't need. I have had one failure from a simple mistake that Caren addressed quickly and got me back on the road with no further issues. All my vehicles are serviced by Scotty's including my RV. I won't go anywhere else unless it is something they are unable to work on and then I am sent to a reputable shop on their recommendation. Scotty's is awesome, their whole staff is honest, friendly and extremely knowledgeable. It's obvious they know what they're doing from first impression. They are certified and have dozens of awards/plaques that fill up one side of the waiting room. Karen and Stephanie who work at the front are just as knowledgeable as the mechanics in the back, they know exact what they're doing. My transmission gave out on me and I had it towed to Scotty's. They diagnosed it and advised me to go to the dealer. My warranty was 2 weeks expired, and so I called them again and asked for advice. They researched and called me back a few hours later, saying the price and warranty the dealer gave me is the best way to go. Where most shops would take your money, they were honest and advised me in my best interest, not theirs. This was obvious when they didn't charge me a single penny, not even the diagnostic fee that they told me about when the car first got there, I'm sure other places wouldn't hesitate to charge me. I recently had the most amazing experience at Scotty's. As you know, it is almost impossible to find a repair shop that does excellent work, is organized and above all... honest. I'm telling you... Scotty's has it all. I brought my 1999 Toyota Tacoma in to get smog repairs because it had failed at 2 other places. I had to apply for state assistance, which I qualified for. I researched and called so many shops in the area to see where I could take my truck. Scotty's was one of the few who actually works with the SMOG CAP program. When I went in, Samantha at the front desk was phenomenal. She was so kind, educated and transparently honest as can be. They are so clean and organized. After thoroughly explaining the process, I left my truck there expecting to have to get smog repairs done... They called me 2 hours later to tell me... wait for it... my TRUCK PASSED smog without any repairs needing to be done! $68 out the door! They could easily have been dishonest and taken advantage of me and the state of California. They did not. After finding out that they perform all types of auto repairs, I have decided to make Scotty's my new automotive repair shop. I have called many friends and family to recommend them and I will do the same for you. read more

I have never been to an auto shop where the people are so friendly and so honest. They provide you with detailed information on what work they've done and what needs to be done. They're honest about what's immediately necessary and what can wait and till when. I am deeply happy with everyone that works there and will go there as long as I live in the area. I've even recommended my old roommate get his oil changed when he comes here from Visalia!! They aren't the cheapest deal around, but well worth the extra few bucks. I found Scotty's on Angie's List and decided to take a chance. I took my Nissan Murano in and was very impressed with their service. They are very genuine and straight forward, and they took the time to listen to what I thought the problem was and allowed me to point out obvious issues. The worst thing about moving away from Riverside was leaving Scotty's. I dread having to find another mechanic. Not surprisingly, Sam (who works at the front desk) told me that I can feel free to call her to get her opinion on a quote, work needing to be done, etc. from a new mechanic until I find another reliable one. Yes, that's right -- Scotty's is willing to go above and beyond even after you've left. I stumbled upon this place when I needed a smog check for my car, and they were my go-to mechanic the entire time I lived in Riverside. They're fairly priced, a family run business, kind and funny and helpful, and have done a great job on my car, from oil changes to fixing the entire nonfunctioning A/C. I've stopped by wanting to know if my tires were leaking air (I know nothing about cars and couldn't get a decent reading), and they checked them out/filled them for free. They checked over my boyfriend's car for free, too, when he stopped by with something quick. They're an incredible pleasure to work with and I doubt I'll ever find an auto shop as reliable, trustworthy, and, frankly, enjoyable as Scotty's has been. I was feeling positive about taking my car into Scotty's for a check up. To my horror, I was basically given a laundry list of big ticket repairs ("blown head gasket "Transmission slipping" and other issues allegedly) I was basically being told the car needed more repairs than it is worth (2009 Infiniti G37 Sedan). Decided to take my car for a 2nd opinion to a shop in Corona (based upon a reliable referral source) and it turns out the car does NOT have any of those issues. It needed normal maintenance and some hoses replaced and an oil change. I would NOT recommend Scotty's Auto Repair. I was already feeling horrible about my car situation - and the office staff were making jokes about the "ruined infiniti". It was very unprofessional and I was made to feel very unimportant. I wasted $150 which could have been better spent on my family. Avoid this place at all cost. read more

Although I did not use this shop yet, because of the excellent customer service over the phone from Sam, I know I will when I need it. My son was stuck in San Diego and we are local here in Riverside, so I was going to have him get it towed here with AAA. His truck would start, sputter and stall. I called a few shops I found here on Yelp but Sam sounded the most confident in their shops ability and was willing to accommodate us after hours. Somehow he got his truck running and is on his way home so I called Sam back to let her know not to wait for us. When I did, she expressed her concern for his safe trip home and let me know about an inspection service they offer and that they also have shuttle service if needed. Scotty's staff is very friendly and they provide excellent repair service. They tell you what they find, but they let you know what is an urgent matter and what can wait. I just had my 2007 Camry serviced there (again, I'm a regular now) and it was done on-time and at a good price. Had started going here based on a friends recommendation for oil changes and such. A little more $$ than the chain places but, what the hell, I like to support small family run operations. Then I needed my brake pads changed. I purchased "lifetime warranty: pads years ago and traded in an old set for new for zero dollars and called for an appointment. Then I was surprised to be told that they will not use owner supplied parts because they become liable for the product if they install them. I told them that they were new and still in the sealed box but they insisted I had to buy the pads through them instead of using my new and free pads! So what happens if I have a slow leak in one of my tires? Will they not use my spare (owner supplied after all) and insist that I buy a tire through them? I'm guessing that marking up parts prices is a good profit for them since it's ridiculous for them to be liable for a brand new part that they didn't make! I then called Jerl's Muffler & Brake and they happily installed my new pads. And they were cheaper than I was quoted at Scotty's! The manager said he had never heard of anyone refusing to install new parts because they were supplied by the customer. read more
