I made an appointment with Scotty in the morning to come look at my heater since it wasn't working. He said he would be able to come at 4pm, but to be safe, gave me a 3-5pm window. 5pm comes around and I call him to see if he's close. He tells me that he's still busy at his other location. I tell him that we need the heater on since the downstairs is extremely cold in Big Bear Lake (especially in January!). He says he'll do what he can. I get a message less than an hour later saying he won't be coming. I really wish he was more honest about his availability. If he knew he couldn't come, tell me earlier and I might have been able to get someone else! Peter Crawford, dba "Scotty's Plumbing & Heating," was my go-to person for plumbing problems. He was prompt, knowledgeable, and reasonably priced. Now, there is an additional charge for "travel time" to Fawnskin, at the same rate as any repair or installation work. The extra 40 minutes for travel, charged as labor, seems unreasonable to me. On the plus side, he still responds quickly and gets the job done. But $275 in labor to light the water heater pilot and replace a toilet float and flapper seems a bit steep. Great service! I needed a leaking toilet fixed and my old heater needed repair. They fixed the toilet immediately and diagnosed the issue with heater shortly after. Unfortunately the fan in the heater wasn't available anymore but Scotty's purchased and installed a new unit within a couple days in perfect time for my winter vacation. Do not, repeat, DO NOT use this company. If I could leave a "Zero Star" I would. In late June of this year (2024) I called several Plumbers in the Big Bear/Surgarloaf area for an estimate to install a new kitchen faucet. The prices ranged from $100 - $350 (service call, removal and installation). I selected "Scotty's Plumbing and Heating", who quoted me a price of $175 (middle of the road based on estimates). His Service Technician arrived and during the installation, stated he needed to purchase New Valves. He walked to his truck and returned a short time later, stating he found the replacement valves in his truck. At the conclusion, I asked for the bill. He called his boss/owner ("Peter"), stating I owned "$275.00". I related his boss quoted me $175.00. I called "Scotty's Plumbing and Heating" and spoke to the owner, "Peter". He said he needed to charge me for the "Service Call". I again replied, I'm only paying $175.00 as quoted. Peter replied, "Ok. Let's make it $200". I stated No, $175.00. Peter eventually accepted that price and I paid with a personal check. On the next day, I discovered the faucet was installed incorrectly (I have a swivel head to cover a double sink and the faucet only turned one way). I had to wait three days for the same Service Technician to come back to my house to correct the problem. Two weeks later, my wife discovered a leak under our sink. I called "Scotty's Plumbing and Heating" and spoke with the owner, "Peter". Peter said he was on vacation in Hawaii, and it would be another four days before he could come back to my home. Peter stated, "You probably need "New Valves", at an additional cost of approximately $250.00. Peter refused to replace the valves for free or even negotiate the price. We did not want a Mold problem, so I called another plumber to have the leak resolved. A local, reliable plumber arrived at my home within an hour, quickly discovering the issue. When "Scotty's Plumbing and Heating" Service Technician installed the "New Valves", he failed to install "Washers", which caused the leak. This was an additional expense of $200.00 (service call and parts). I sent "Peter" a copy of this New Bill, asking for an adjustment on my bill of $175.00. It's been over six weeks, and I have not heard from "Scotty's Plumbing and Heating". This company in my opinion, is a rip off - They do inadequate work, don't honor their quotes or compensate for their mistakes. read more

They came out to fix a leak for our washer hookup. The leak was fixed for about 2 days. I tried calling many, many times but his voicemail is full and the 2 times I was able to get ahold of him he told me he'd stop by but never did. We weren't sure what we were going to get being that it was late on a holiday weekend. But after many unanswered calls to supposed 24/7 companies, Scotty's picked up and was able to be at our cabin within an hour. Our heater quit working and the house grew cold. I called Scotty's and I went to work leaving my wife to greet him. After totally messing up our programed thermostat, Scotty found a bad part in the heater. It needed to be replaced, and luckily he had one on his truck. So in it went and the heater worked fine. He told my wife that the repair was $245 so she wrote a check and asked for a receipt for our records. "Wait. Don't make it out to me or Scotty's but make it out to xxxx (somebody else)." Odd, but ok. She again asked for a receipt and he said he'd drop it in our mailbox tomorrow. ??? It didn't show up. I called him the next evening and he said he would drop it in our mailbox tomorrow. Nope. So we never found out what part he put in or what his labor rate was to justify the $245. Bottom line is he fixed it but we have no receipt and no warm fuzzy about the transaction. Scotty is dishonest, cuts corners, does not finish work started, and has no problem using extortion tactics to get money from you for incomplete work. Scotty's plumbing was contacted by John Corey from Boulder Bay Real estate to detect a possible leak in our cabin while we were out of town. I asked multiple times for a bid for repair and was given the blow off by Scotty. The next thing I hear, is that the job had been completed much to my surprise! The bill was over double of others bids for the same work, and he did not repair the driveway that he cut to install water line. Not only that, but he never bid the job as required under his license, never called USA (underground service assessment) never pulled a city permit, as required, and threatened to place a Lien in escrow to get paid. John Corey is in cahoots with this guy and worked against us on this as well. NEVER use either of these people as they are as crooked as the mountain road used to drive up to BB. Ca Contractors License board is after him as well as the Board of Realtors for John Corey. read more

Upon discovering that mice had eaten the power cord to my cabin wall heater, I called the company that installed the heater in 2008. First of all, I had to negotiate their woefully inefficient communications system. Once I got the ear of a human being, I was told that they would come out, diagnose the system and give me an estimate! I told them that I didn't have a system, I had a "WALL HEATER" and all it needs is a new power cord. Still being given the run around I decided to Call Scotty's. The Owner returned my call on his cell phone. He understood immediately that all I wanted and needed was someone to install a new power cord! Since I am getting older, I couldn't really install it myself (Can't see what I am doing and it's really painful to be lying on the floor trying to complete such a task!) Joe came out, I handed him the power cord that Scotty recommended I buy at Butcher's Block Hardware Store and the job was completed in a few minutes, including a brief test of the heater and fan!
