We were seated at a booth and immediately the waitress came over and asked for a drink order. We looked over our menus and made our selections. Our waitress was nice and was generally attentive. My husband ordered the killer combo sandwich and he did not order any sides because the sandwich is quite large. It comes with a choice of two meets with a pickle on top. I ordered the ribs with two sides, which were coleslaw and potato salad. She brought out the food, and I had a slice of bread on top of my ribs, which I was not happy about since I have celiac. Typically most barbecue places if they serve bread will serve it on the side, not smack dab on top of the meal. I should've also told her no bread, but I wasn't expecting it to be on top of it. I ended up just giving the top ribs to my husband since I usually don't finish my ribs anyways. The ribs were barely lukewarm, unfortunately. Their sauce is a sweeter sauce, which I prefer, but I thought it was just OK. The ribs were generally fine and the coleslaw was good and so was the potato salad. I would say out of the whole meal the potato salad was the best. My husband was not happy with his sandwich because the beef was kind of dried out. He had been to this restaurant once before as a guest of a friend, and at that time, the beef was more tender and thicker sliced. I thought that the rib plate meal was reasonable at $17 with two sides. The sandwich by itself was $18 which wasn't that great considering the meat was dried out. It was just a casual restaurant with a homestyle feel to it. It was clean and so were the restrooms. We would not particularly go back just because the main thing which is a barbecue it was just OK.

As you walk in you're immediately greeted with a welcome and today's specials. Staff is honest and makes great suggestions. "To go" materials are easily accessible cause you can't really finish your meal (I mean you can, but you better carve out some time for a nap!). They offer catering for celebrations, parties, graduations, or anything you could think of! Place was very clean, and comfortable. While every bbq place in KC offers their own spin, many of which are great, this place just hits better!! It just feels like a small town bbq spot that is hidden; like a speak-easy of BBQ! Picture below is their 2 meat combo with 2 sides (ribs, burnt ends, cheesy corn and tallow fries) $26.

For my sides, I got Mac and cheese, cheesy corn and potato salad. Turkey sandwich was good, per le bf. It had a good smokey flavor and wasn't dry! My brisket was also quite moist with minimal fatty parts, which is what I prefer. Sausage was ok, had to really chew into it. What I'm most disappointed about is the ribs. The ribs were good, but for almost $20, I got 3 pieces. They stated for the ribs plate, you'd get about 3 or 4, depending on the weight, but it would be nice to note that down somewhere that when paying $20, expect 3 pieces. Ive gotten double that and about the same price at other bbq spots, hence my disappointed and surprised when opening the container. Mac and cheese had huge shell noodles, which was cool but on the watery side. Potato salad was decent, got the job done but a little bland. Sauces are also on the tangy side, and if you're a sweet bbq sauce gal like me, it wasn't hitting the spot. Overall was nice giving a try, but will prob be going elsewhere for my bbq needs!

I've found our new favorite restaurant for our weekly BBQ fix at J's BBQ! This was my second visit…read morein three weeks, and I can't rave enough about the food, ambiance, and service. My first trip was with my teenage son who loves ribs. We went for their unbeatable Wednesday/Saturday $18 full rack rib special. We shared the ribs and still had plenty left to take home. The meat was tender, smoky, and perfectly cooked. The BBQ beans were outstanding with just the right balance of smokiness and sweetness, and the seasoned crinkle-cut fries were addictive. This past weekend I brought the whole family of five. We're longtime regulars at KC Joe's, so I was a little nervous about a potential mutiny , but everyone loved it! My wife's face lit up the moment we walked in. She said it felt like a cozy restaurant we'd stumble upon while on vacation. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming with plenty of comfortable booths, warm lighting, and that perfect smoky BBQ aroma that hits you right when you enter. I went with the sausage and brisket combo, and it easily holds its own against most of the BBQ I grew up eating in Texas. One child ordered the kid's hot dog meal, and it was one of the best hot dogs I've tasted. Another got the brisket "Sloppy Mess" sandwich, and my wife had the shredded pork sandwich. Every single plate was a hit, and the whole family agreed we've found a new favorite. The owner was incredibly friendly and took the time to chat with us about how he opened the restaurant. It's always great to see that kind of passion! My only feedback is that I wish they stayed open a bit later. They close at 7pm on Sundays and 8pm the rest of the week. With a 20-minute drive from Overland Park and a family of five to wrangle, we could roll up right around closing time. A little extra time would make it perfect which I anticipate will happen the more people discover them. All in all, J's BBQ has officially earned a regular spot in our weekly rotation. If you're in the area and craving quality BBQ in a family-friendly setting, do yourself a favor and check it out!

You order at the counter and are given a number to take to your table while you wait for your food. I ordered The Bella. This was a comically large sandwich. The burnt ends were HUGE! It was impossible to eat as a sandwich so I took it apart and cut up the burnt ends. All the food was solid and I really liked the hot bbq sauce. I left completely full finishing my meal. I would lean on ordering something else when I return as the sandwich was just impossible to eat as a sandwich for me. I really want to try the ribs but they were sold out. So I know for next time to come early.

I ordered the charbroiled burger with pepper jack cheese, jalapeños, and bacon. It was cooked well, but I realized I'm just not a fan of that distinct charbroiled flavor. You might ask, "Then why did you order it?" Fair question. I'd never had a burger with such a pronounced charbroiled taste before, so now I know it's just a personal preference, not a reflection of the burger itself. We also ordered the Farmer burger with an egg, cheddar cheese, and bacon, along with a plain cheeseburger. The plain cheeseburger was fantastic. The patties are a nice, average size. They're not massive, but they're satisfying and full of flavor. For sides, we tried the curly fries, crinkle fries, and tater tots. The crinkle fries were our favorite. Also, don't skip the homemade ranch. It was excellent. The real standout, though, was the staff. They were cheerful, helpful, and incredibly fast. The place was packed because of the fair, but everyone was hustling and keeping things running smoothly. I pride myself on leaving honest reviews, so I do have to mention the one downside: the flies. There were quite a few inside. I'm sure the heat and the fair/rodeo traffic made it worse, but it was definitely noticeable and annoying while eating. Overall, the food was good, the service was excellent, and I'd happily come back. Next time, I'll skip the charbroiled burger simply because I've learned that flavor isn't for me.

I visited them in SW Olathe after checking their social media for upcoming dates and locations. My brisket combo ($11.00) included a brisket sandwich, one side and a canned drink or bottled water. I added a second side ($2.00). The sandwich had a generous quantity of tasty, smoked, lean brisket on a fresh bun. I was surprised to see they did not offer baked beans, but their flavorful potato salad was a stellar substitute. The cole slaw was also first-rate. Two BBQ sauces were available upon request - original and hot. Both were very good and nicely complemented the brisket. I found the service at the window to be friendly, cheerful and efficient with only a two-minute wait for my order. The owners are a couple who operated an award winning food truck in Phoenix for 11 years, so they certainly know what they are doing. They recently moved to the KC area to be near their grandkids. Their slogan is "That's how we do it, son." Overall, excellent!
