Perfect Rib dinner in Kansas. Looks gorgeous.

Howdy everybuddy. Family emergency in Kansas, jumped in the car last night and drove up. All seems well so I had time to catch some Kansas City BBQ at J's BBQ Smokehouse. Yes, it's truly a smokehouse. Getting out of the car that real wood smoke hits you like a cord of wood. Service was excellent, upbeat, moving at lightening speed with smiles. Prices are on the low side for the quality and quantity of ribs n sides you get. No way my plates this heavy back in Texas under @$18.99. That's a deal. Those beans had huge, succulent burnt ends sized chunks of brisket. These were a meal by themselves. Ribs? Pure tenderism, full smoke flavor. Time to up my game again. Well I had to tap out. I got out of there with all my fingers though. Good as it was, I was worried I'd nip a few digits. I see why KC is famous for BBQ. Take care, stay as warm as a belly full of BBQ. Peace

We tried out J's for the first time. We got our order to go. They have $18 rib slabs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. My partner is a huge fan of ribs so he finds all of the BBQ places with a rib special. I decided to get the Maddies's special bowl which is homemade white cheese Mac and cheese with burnt ends on top. It comes with BBQ sauce on it but I asked for it on the side. When we got there to place our order around 6:45pm, we got the last slab of ribs. We were going to get 2 for the rest of our family to eat for dinner but since there was only one, we got the whole chicken as well. Again, I got the Maddie's special to eat on my own and the rest was for the other BBQ lovers on the family. They also got a large salad to share. I added on a peanut butter brownie because brownie and peanut butter are some of the reasons to eat any dessert so I couldn't pass up that combo. The restaurant is kind of what I'd call a whole in the wall atmosphere which is actually a big positive to me. I often find the best food at these places. Rustic is another description I've seen by others and I'd agree. Weirdly enough, it almost has this cottage feel. Lower ceilings, a lot of wood, and smaller. There was a decent amount of seating and there were tables open but they had a pretty large and steady crowd with lots of orders being picked up for takeout too. A small sauce bar with 4 options. I do like that they offer a vinegar bbq and not just sweet. We waited 10-15 minutes to get our order. It's about a 20 minute drive for us so we made a quick glance to make sure everything was in our order. Unfortunately, when we got home, we realized the full slab of ribs was short with 9 bones instead of 12. They were very good according to the family who ate them. The chicken was also very good and everyone agreed that they would go back for the rib special even though they were disappointed in not getting the full order. We also agreed that the large salad is not enough for 4 people if you want more than just a tiny serving. It's excellent for 2-3 but not really enough for 4 adults. My Maddie's bowl was really yummy. It's rich and it could only eat about a third of it with some side salad. The Mac and cheese made with white cheese and sauce was really yummy. The burnt ends were really good! I'm not a fan of fat and yes there was a little but overall the burnt ends were tender meat with little fat. It was good enough that I had no desire to use the bbq sauce which I think would have covered up a lot of the other flavors. I'm a huge fan of dill pickles and their dill pickle spears were on point! I ate almost all they gave us! I greedily did not really share. I usually don't eat much and share but when it comes to dill pickles most everyone knows those are mine. These were crisp and bold! Not sure if they make or buy them, but yummy! We wish they were a bit closer to us but we will definitely make the drive again to get more from J's. Unfortunately, I neglected to take photos of the food which is a compliment because we ate it too fast and that's what I'm focused on instead of photos. Lol

J's BBQ in Olathe is located in the same building with the same old-school BBQ restaurant atmosphere as the former occupant Johnny's BBQ. But behind the scenes, things have improved. I always enjoyed Johnny's meats, but I believe J's are even better. The ribs weren't exactly fall-off-the-bone, but they had the right amount of firmness and only required the slightest tug to pull the meat free. The burnt ends were as juicy and tender as any other in the KC area. And the smoked chicken was also excellent. The sides were definitely better than average, but not the best I've had. My favorite was the smooth tasting mac and cheese - definitely not made from a box of Kraft. I also enjoyed the cole slaw which hit a particularly pleasant note with me. I'm not a fan of onions and I struggle to find cole slaw that doesn't have an overpowering onion taste. J's slaw was creamy and tasted like slaw, not onions. Yay for me! The BBQ beans were good with a few chunks of brisket thrown-in, but they were nothing spectacular. My wife also enjoyed her potato salad. Shortly before we arrived at 5:45 pm on a Sunday the kitchen ran out of French fries which I had been planning to order. I could see on other plates from patrons that had arrived prior to us that the fries are crinkle cut, direct from a bag in the freezer, so I suppose I probably didn't miss much. The chalkboard sign by the register queue also indicated they had run out of pulled chicken. The staff was a bit slow to take orders and to get the food out to the customers, but J's hasn't been open long and I assume these issues will improve over time. The meat at this restaurant isn't sauced in the kitchen which is a very nice touch in my opinion. This gives customers the opportunity to select their own sauce (or no sauce if they prefer) from a small bar at the end of the serving counter. They offer their original sauce, a spicy sauce, a hot sauce, and an apple flavored sauce. I enjoyed all of them, but I doubt I'll use the apple flavored BBQ sauce again. Another element that adds to authenticity of the establishment is the BBQ smoker smell in the dining room. Don't worry, it isn't overwhelming and I didn't notice that it soaked into my clothes after I left. But in my opinion, if an old school style BBQ doesn't have at least a little bit of that smoky smell in the restaurant, something is wrong. Rather it's one of the promising signs that with a little bit of time and some fine tuning of this new restaurant, things will be very right.

This is waist of money KC Combo

We ordered at 1:07 after the lunch rush. What a mess we got 2 of the KC combos it is supposed to be ribs, burnt ends, brisket, cole slaw, fries, bbq beans, pickles and bread. That is what1 ordered, what I got was 4 ribd that looked like they came off the end of a St. Louis rack of ribs. Of course they were out of burnt ends (they did substitute pulled pork with no adjustment in the price) 2 slices of brisket that you could resole your boots with they were so dry, 1 slice of bread, the fries must be from Walmart pickles, the cole slaw and bean containers were barely half full. All for 28.00 and change each. Two combos for 63.00 not worth the money and time. As for the service, well you can tell that everyone should be grateful to be in her presence. The ambiance has not changed since it was Johnny's. You can't say it has gone down hill and off a cliff.. Some reviews say run don't walk, this is true, run out the door.

    Pork Belly Burnt Ends

Went in with my family for the Friday evening Prime Rib special and Burnt Ends but ended up trying the Pork Belly Burnt Ends they were testing today. The Pork Belly Burnt Ends were absolutely outstanding. The best description for them would be meat candy! I hope this dish makes its way to the main menu. If it doesn't I'll go back to my old faithful of Burnt Ends which are also amazing! If you haven't been to J's or it's been awhile, give them a try.

Friday Prime Rib deal with smokes aggies, bacon string green beans, corn muffins, creamy horsey sauce and homemade au jus.

We've visited here twice in the past two weeks. Our 1st meal was their amazing Friday night prime rib deal. It was worth every penny, and we couldn't get enough of the smoked Aggies. On our 2nd visit, we tried the Chicken Clucker sandwich, and the owner recommended the white cheddar mac and cheese, which was fantastic. Their corn muffins are our son's favorite, so we had to order extra for him. The owner is very friendly and very passionate about his food. We can't wait to come back and try more food.

But the only thing it had going for it was the server and the space. The food was brought out quickly but was not of good quality. My brisket was 75% all fat. It was gross. My 90yr old grandmother ordered their Crown Prime Beef rib for 38.00. It was literally all fat. The very few pieces of meat on it was very tender and soft, but she took two bites of it and could not eat anymore. My husband got the pulled pork and it was so dry. The best thing that we ate was our salmon dip appetizer. Other than that I was highly disappointed in the quality of the meat. I spent too much money just to eat nothing but fat. Very poor quality and not sure that I will be returning.

For my sides, I got Mac and cheese, cheesy corn and potato salad. Turkey sandwich was good, per le bf. It had a good smokey flavor and wasn't dry! My brisket was also quite moist with minimal fatty parts, which is what I prefer. Sausage was ok, had to really chew into it. What I'm most disappointed about is the ribs. The ribs were good, but for almost $20, I got 3 pieces. They stated for the ribs plate, you'd get about 3 or 4, depending on the weight, but it would be nice to note that down somewhere that when paying $20, expect 3 pieces. Ive gotten double that and about the same price at other bbq spots, hence my disappointed and surprised when opening the container. Mac and cheese had huge shell noodles, which was cool but on the watery side. Potato salad was decent, got the job done but a little bland. Sauces are also on the tangy side, and if you're a sweet bbq sauce gal like me, it wasn't hitting the spot. Overall was nice giving a try, but will prob be going elsewhere for my bbq needs!

Someone from the restaurant replied to a comment I had made, rattling off menu recommendations and encouraging me to stop by. It worked. By the time Father's Day rolled around, Meat Mitch had become the destination. When we arrived, the place looked exactly like the kind of barbecue joint people hope to discover. The patio was alive. Kids chased each other through the crowd. Cornhole bags flew through the air. Families lingered around picnic tables while smoke drifted through the summer air. We were quoted an hour-and-a-half to two-hour wait. No problem. It was Father's Day. Barbecue and patience have always gone hand in hand. So we made an afternoon of it. My son found other kids to play with. My wife ducked into Billie's Grocery for a coffee and a snack. We wandered the Plaza, killed time, and enjoyed the day. Frankly, Meat Mitch seemed worth waiting for. A 90-to-120-minute wait eventually became three hours. That's when the story changed. At one point we sat near the expo window because the Toast waitlist showed we were next in line for a table. From there, we watched the operation for over an hour. The bottleneck appeared to be the expo station. Food runners stood ready while plates piled up in the window and tickets were worked one at a time. The entire process moved at a pace that would make the DMV ask if everything was okay. Meanwhile, managers were making rounds apologizing to guests, comping checks, and handing out gift cards. Every few minutes another table looked confused, frustrated, or defeated. As I listened to conversations around me, a pattern emerged. Multiple tables said they had already waited 45 minutes to an hour for food after being seated. That's when it clicked. The Toast waitlist showed we were next in line for a table. We weren't next to eat. We were next to sit. By this point my son was having a better Father's Day than I was. He'd made friends, played games, and explored the Plaza. I spent mine watching plates age in the expo window like they were being dry-aged alongside the brisket. What really broke my brain was watching carryout orders continue to leave the building while the dining room was drowning. If your quoted wait has turned into three hours, managers are comping meals, and guests are openly frustrated, maybe it's time to stop accepting new problems and start solving the ones already sitting in your restaurant. Then there was the expo station. For over an hour, I watched the same pair of gloves touch faces, clothing, equipment, tickets, and food. By the end they were shiny with grease, stretched loose from overuse, and inspiring absolutely zero confidence. I've seen cast-iron skillets retired sooner than those gloves. I've worked in restaurants long enough to know everyone has bad days. Father's Day is chaos. People call out. Equipment breaks. Tickets stack up. It happens. But after three hours--already an hour longer than the maximum wait we were quoted--I never got to try the barbecue that brought me there in the first place. Unfortunately, I can't review the food. The only thing I got to sample was my patience. And that's a shame. Because everything about Meat Mitch made me want to like Meat Mitch. The patio was great. The atmosphere was great. The energy was great. It felt like the kind of place where you could spend an entire afternoon with people you enjoy being around. In a way, that's what made the experience so frustrating. The promise of a great Father's Day was sitting right in front of me. I just never made it to the table. Update: After sharing my experience with management, Meat Mitch reached out, accepted responsibility for what happened, and invited me back. I appreciate the professionalism and plan to give them another opportunity.
