This is my update after visit 3 to Joe's BBQ since moving to OP. This visit brought my review down a bit. I've tried more BBQ places in the area now. I met a couple of friends for dinner tonight at Joe's which did make my visit awesome! You order at a register, then pay, and pick up your food on a tray. A long line moves pretty fast, there's a decent amount of seating. so Zero complaints on service and ambiance. It's basically self serve and the decor is what you'd expect at a BBQ place. I was impressed with how smoothly and quickly it went with a large crowd there for dinner! I like the BBQ but it's not the best I've had. I got a 2 meat platter which comes with 1 side and toasted white bread. The brisket is pre-cut. I always ask for the lean side and the lady at the register said they cut it that way, but it had a lot of fat so I couldn't eat about half of it. The other meat I chose was pulled pork. It was fine. My side was corn. I'd call it Elote but they call it something else. It was very good. It's a small cup so I wish it were more since it was my favorite item of my meal. I also prefer a mustard/vinegar based BBQ sauce and they do not offer that at Joe's unless I somehow missed it but I don't think so. The BBQ sauce is very sweet! I would go back if a group of people I'm with wanted to go, but it's not the BBQ place I would pick for myself. Some of that is personal preference. It may be that you love fat (many do) and sweet BBQ sauce. If that's you, I would recommend you go! read more

Oh my word this bbq joint has some of the best ribs and brisket I have had and some of the best beans I have ever had! I would almost go back just for the beans. They are not that sweet, full of flavor, has chunks of meat in it which makes it pretty hardy. So good! read more

The bread pudding tastes like a super cinnamon-y cinnamon roll that kicks you in the face with cinnamon. Soo good! Although the lines were long since it was peak dinner hours, I never had to wait more than 25 minutes in line. Despite the long line, it was worth it since the original Z-Man is one of the best sandwiches in the state of Kansas even for the whole country. The fries were nice and crispy, and the interior gave off a mixture of some wild-west vibes and a sports bar due to some vintage signs and many TVs were turned to MLB games. I recommend going to the original flagship location at the gas station in KCK if this is your first time. If it's not your second time, then the other locations including this one have shorter lines. read more

Besides the crowds you can expect and the too spicy baked beans you will encounter this is a top notch KC Bbq establishment. Upon arrival, I needed to wait approximately 1/2 hour to order (on a weekday). However, after ordering the food delivery was prompt and fortunately there was seating available. The ribs, salad, french fries as well as the banana pudding was outstanding. It was especially nice to have the free accompanying dill pickles and bread to savor but would have prefered that the bread was garlic toasted. With the many bbq choices to consider in Kansas City, I'm sure this is no less than a top 10 franchise location to enjoy. When/if I return to KC I will definitely try the brisket and sausage. read more

Visiting Kansas and everyone told us if we wanted good barbecue head to Joe's. Well, it didn't disappoint. Everything was great. We did have to wait in line for about 30 minutes but well worth it. The atmosphere was bright and cheerful with plenty of tables to accommodate the long line. We ordered a full slab of ribs, a side of beans, french fries, and a side salad. The ribs were meaty and fell off the bone. We added the sweet sauce that was on the table. It was very tasty. The beans were OK. They have a little kick to them . The fries were hot and cooked to perfection. The salad was fresh and a nice size portion. The staff was friendly, including the girls that were cleaning up after each person left the table. For dessert we shared the banana pudding which was excellent. Went to a few other barbecue places while in Kansas and joe's was definitely the best. So get in line for a wonderful meal. read more

The staff and service do stand out for me. They greet you and are very friendly especially for someone who's trying Kansas BBQ for the first time ever! My boyfriend takes so much pride in his hometown BBQ so much so that when he comes home to Olathe he treats his friend and his pawpaw and nana out to BBQ restaurants, not sure if this particular one though! But suffice to say I have heard of Kansas BbQ being so proudly different than Texas BBQ or Carolina BBQ... This place was especially helpful in giving you ideas of what you can order and was very quick in filling your to go order. I ended up ordering the beef brisket sandwich with a side of pulled pork. The food and service at Joe's are excellent. The setup is more like a cafeteria--you place your order on one side of the bar, then pay and pick it up on the other. Seating is first come, first served. Be aware that food is prepared quickly, so don't wander too far while waiting. I ordered the Hogamaniac, which includes two ribs, pulled pork, and sausage--a great way to sample their meats. The kids had the kid-sized chicken dinner, which was delicious. The smoked white chicken was especially juicy. My wife had the Z-Man sandwich, a local favorite, and she really enjoyed it. We'll definitely be back next time we're in town! Joes! This is a must. This bbq joint is my family's top pick in Kansas City! There are plenty of good places here but this is always busy and always great. Whenever we go, I always get the two meat and try a different combo. Brisket is tender. Ribs stay together but come clean off. The sandwiches are good. There is something for everyone. Plan on a line. It moves relatively quick but there will always be a line. We have someone scout a table while we are in line. The sides are hit or miss and really depend on your taste. Family night out with my son, amazing daughter in law and grandson. We had several plates starting with the cowboy special they had 2 meats and ribs with 2 sides. Then always the smoked portabella mushroom sandwich and then another 2 meat platter. Meats were brisket, pulled pork and sausage. Sides were fries, onion rings and baked beans. Nothing at Joes is bad it is all awesome including the nana pudding . It was a Friday night and the staff was amazing getting everyone through the line. The parents are in town visiting from CA and wanted some good BBQ so we thought a trip to Joe's was the thing to do. We came on a Thursday night for dinner so the crowd wasnt too out of hand. We did still have to wait ina small line when we walked in, but it gave everyone a chance to peruse the menu. I opted for the rocket Pig sandwich - which does not include a side, but I really wanted to try their Mac and cheese so I ordered a side of that as well. The Mac was creamy and almost smoky. Definitely uses different cheese than a typical Mac, but it's so good. The sandwich was HUGE and so , so good. It comes with pulled pork, crispy bacon, pepper jack cheese, chipotle sauce, and fried jalapenos. It also has their rocket BBQ sauce which has a good kick to it. I absolutely loved this sandwich. The whole group approved of their meals and I was happy with the seating situation. We had 4 adults and a baby in a car seat and were able to find a table to fit all of us without feeling crowded. This is the 5th KC BBQ place we've tried while in the KC area. And sadly the most expensive as well. I'll start with the good. The service was good and the ambiance was fine. But, I value the taste and quality of the food far more than ambience and service. And since you're coming here for the BBQ and not the sides we give it two stars. The burnt end sandwich is our benchmark. The burnt ends weren't burnt, but that's probably due to the fact they probably weren't smoked long enough because the smoke flavor was mostly absent. The sauce was no better than your average supermarket shelf bbq sauce. What was good enough to get the 2 stars. The fries were some of the best. Fresh thicker cut fried crisp with some good Cajun seasoning. The beans. Probably among the best with a good amount of meat and slightly sweet. But if I'm going out for just good fries I'm probably going to the few guys. This doesn't get past the Taco Bell test and there's no way after spending $45 for two sandwiches, one fry and a small portion of beans I'm definitely going to In n Out first with my money. We went around dinner time and the place was packed, the option to look at the menu while in line is a great option. The line goes quicker than you think it will. Once you order the food is fast to come down to the end of the counter, you can tell that the kitchen staff is a well oiled machine. Finding a seat can be a negative some times because even with a bunch of seating there is always a large amount of people eating in. They also seem to clear out quick enough that you are not waiting too long. Whatever you order is a good portion and has good flavor. Most people will tell you what to get, I suggest trying it all and make your on opinions. read more

Z man sandwich is always a fan favorite, along with ribs and 2 meat platter. The best side for what you pay for are the fries. The Mac and cheese is always great...but the real winner is the super crunchy pickles can't get enough on those. The ribs - full slab you get a piece of garlic toast and 1 side. Seems a bit skimpy for only giving one side for a full slab that most people are going to share...when you get the same size of side with anything else on the menu. The sausage is decent as well. This is probably my favorite BBQ in Kansas City. I know, that's a bold statement, but dang it's always on point. After Black Friday Shopping left us broke and starved, this was the perfect place to lick our wounds and recoup. The line was backed up to the door, but was managed quwith perfection. Brought an out of town'er with us for her first visit and she claimed it was the most delicious BBQ she'd ever tasted. I beamed with pride like I had personally made the food. I've tasted most the menu and this day the new Rocket Pig Sandwich caught my eye. Bite after bite of amazing!!! I could go on and on about it, but just trust me, get it! Visiting family, we stopped in for a late night bite. We felt bad that it was near closing, but even after we finished, they were seating large groups - so a patient staff for sure! Decorated with past BBQ awards, and a vibe of sitting in the cleanest barn you'll ever sit in, it was nice to dine when there were so few customers in. We went early on a Tuesday evening (4:45) and were able to immediately place our order. I had to decide if I wanted the Z-man with brisket, provolone and an onion ring or the Rocket pig with pulled pork, bacon, fried jalapenos, and pepperjack. I usually prefer brisket but the additions to the Rocket pig swayed me...and I am so glad I did! Hands-down, one of the best barbecue sandwiches I have ever had in my life! We also got baked beans and shared an order of onion rings which were both good. (And I sm picky about my onion rings!) All of us enjoyed the barbecue sauces as well. Big bonus: we noticed you can get a punch card for Rocket Pig sandwiches to earn free ones! We didn't get fries this time, but at home we use the Oklahoma Joe's seasoning that they use on their fries which is pretty darn good. We will be back! read more

Joe's is a must visit if you ever visit KC. Absolutely my favorite bbq spot in town. If the original location is ever too packed, I would recommend checking out their other locations! I visited the Olathe location on a Tuesday night and it was surprisingly not as packed as the OG location! You walk in and order your food at the counter and find a spot to eat.
